with powapowa's passing I've been watching this mv a lot and the theory I've come up with is that the girl and the rest of her school are going through teenage anxiety and depression, everyone is always drowning in class and jumping out of windows and it's all pretty casual and a part of daily life. The other girl is the future image of the student, or maybe what the student wants to be like right now (the girl wants to be a musician, so the girl could be compared to powa?). The main character tries to kill herself, doesn't succeed, tries again, succeeds, and meet up again with her "dream-self" who is now also dead because of her actions. The dream-her hates her for giving up, which explains her anger at the end. The video ends with a crowd of empty chairs, possibly meaning since she's dead, her music career has come to an end too? Seeing that powa was around his 3rd year of highschool when he published this, I'm guessing it's based off of his own worries as a 18yo going out into the world. He did have a lot of worries about growing up, seeing his last tweets.... I hold this song very close to my heart and I wish powapowa's soul good travels, I miss him more than anything.
Bon Spacey my heart is with yours too. i too feel the same way and the deep connection and meaning i have to this song as his true and earnest emotions expressed into a song, this song.
I think your theory is correct, everything in the music video matches with what you said. Someone should have put this in Project Diva or made in mmd of this; the meaning is very significant and any teen can relate to this (including myself and friends). I wish this song becomes more popular.
I think your explanation is definitely the most correct. Especially since when she first starts off she starts with 2 Lives like a game so when she tries a second time with one life that means it becomes 0 So she dies definitely at the end.
To add to that, maybe the water in the classroom represents a sea. We already surmised everyone's depressed and a character in a sea often represents depression in anime/manga.

one thing i don't think i've ever seen anyone mention is how the cats dance in sync with chiyoko in the first chorus yet in the second chorus they're all doing different things. like she can't control them anymore.
another thing i dont see people talk about is how the building is only 3 stories tall, and her class is on the top floor. he dropped out of school, and if chiyoko is meant to symbolize him, then it would make sense. he would have never made it to his fourth year, and neither would she. he dropped out, and she took her own life. maybe im just thinking about it too much, but i always thought it symbolized that for him, despite having a dream, he never saw anything past 20 that's worth continuing for. maybe chiyoko didn't see her fourth year as anything because for her, she knew she wouldn't make it. in the beginning of the song, it says stage 3-C. yes, that could just be because she's in year 3 class c-14. but i think it may be something more along the lines that, if a level in a video game were to be split up into parts, it makes sense that they would be split up into parts a, b, and c. its been done before in other games, but also in things like tests and tv shows or movies. she made it to c-3, almost at 4, but had no intentions of making it that far by the end of the song. hence, the 'game over'
@@eroguro4785 i think japanese high schools only have three years though but that could still make sense in regards to the idea of almost being at the end but never quite making it
I’m kind of surprised that even after this song’s 10th anniversary, I haven’t seen anyone mention the biggest inspiration behind its story. On October 18, 2014, siinamota made a tweet saying Chiyoko’s Joining of the Cabinet was based on the manga Young, Alive, In Love by Daisuke Nishijima. He really loved Nishijima’s work and was excited to pick this one up back in 2012. I can see why there are many different theories about this song’s meaning now, because without the context of the manga, the surrealness of everything makes it a bit hard to understand on its own. (Spoilers for all 3 volumes of Young, Alive, In Love. If you want to spot the references yourself, check it out! Only the first volume is available in English at this time, so if you can’t read it yourself, take a look at the synopsis before reading this comment.) I had to use Deepl to get a translation, so take this with a grain of salt. These are just the parts I think may be relevant after reading through the manga for anyone else who’s curious about this song’s meaning like I am. How to interpret them is left up to the audience now... Chiyoko’s three lives match the events of the three volumes of Young, Alive, In Love. The chapters are called levels and progress normally through the volumes, representing the town's ever increasing radiation levels. The last chapter however, is named Level 0 since the town’s radiation disappeared. Volume 1: Makoto wears earphones all the time, and they help him ignore the world around him. Mana is in his class, but she doesn’t attend because the haunted gates of their school make her throw up. They are in their last year of high school (Year 3 in Japan) and neither of them have decided what to do after graduation. The black knee socks the girls in the MV wear could be a reference to the identical ones Mana wore when they were the lucky item of the day. The indigo blue color refers to a small blue light the two saw in the Unit 1 water heater. Makoto thought it was Cherenkov radiation and ran away from it with Mana, who believed it was a ghost. Makoto uses a Geiger counter app to detect radiation levels near the water heaters. Volume 2: Mana jumped off her apartment building and fell headfirst through the sky, both as an attempt to end her life and as a sacrifice. Makoto became her caretaker during her recovery, and she returned with bandages on her eye and her arms like Chiyoko’s. The phrase “various things which cannot be seen” is taken directly from the manga. Makoto and Mana bond over their mutual search for invisible things others don’t believe in yet exist, radiation and ghosts respectively, though other “unseeable” concepts are explored in each of the volumes. I doubt Chiyoko is literally joining a cabinet, rather she is joining the unseen “underworld” by tirelessly searching for the invisible long-haired girl the same way Makoto and Mana did by investigating the water heaters. The two of them parallel Makoto and Mana’s relationship. (There’s a prominent gay couple in the manga, so perhaps saying there could be a romance teased here isn’t too far off?) Volume 3: After Mana learns she is pregnant, she cuts her hair short to her shoulders. She previously suffered from poor mental health, but now she gives up self-harm and commits to improving herself and the world for her child’s sake. She tells Makoto the child is his by slapping him across the face, causing his glasses to fall to the ground. She didn’t tell him sooner because she had noticed him escaping reality through fiction by watching movies often in the past few months. She admits she was only pretending to see ghosts and to be ignorant about the truths of her personal life to get his attention. By this point, they have switched places entirely, with Mana only believing in radiation and Makoto having gained the ability to see ghosts because he stopped caring about radiation. We’re told it is okay to use imagination sometimes to help you deal with a painful reality, and that the world fluctuates between the two. Music is named as one example of this. The moment the long-haired girl takes Chiyoko’s glasses and slams her into the building must be a huge moment of realization for her. The acceptance of a harsh reality that breaks her out of her fantasy… Unlike Makoto and Mana’s happy ending, Chiyoko’s dream does not come true, and she will never be able to see that girl in the real world. While siinamota did take a lot of inspiration from Young, Alive, In Love and Nishijima’s body of work in general, this song is its own story with unique characters, so these are really just clues hinting at its true meaning. It has no relation to the other Chiyoko songs as far as I know. It’d be nice if there were some theories about Chiyoko’s Joining of the Cabinet that had the manga’s content in mind… (If you’re seeing this again, it’s because UA-cam deleted my original comment. People seemed to find this insightful, so I’m reposting it for anyone who’s interested.)
Omg thank you for this comment, i wanted to ask where can I read/buy the manga because i can't find it anywhere. Only the first volume is for sale and i can't find the second and third volume at all
I think the guitar strike is a reference to フリクリ. In that anime the violent but fun older girl hits MC on the head with a guitar in a very similar setting. Except in that show the MC gets powered up and has to try to save the town by swinging his own guitar. Looks like it doesn't work out that way for this MC @@SleepyAylun The removing of the glasses is of course a common TV trope where the person turns out to look super attractive without them. To be an idol or to be superman the glasses have to come off. Looks like it doesn't work out that way for this MC I think this may have also been, to an extent, PowapowaP's rebuttal to the optimism in Deco*27's ゆめゆめ. It's the same concept with the future dream self as a pop star. There's some visual and concept similarities too (Both movies were animated by 森井ケンシロウ). The difference is PowapowaP's character is left in an empty auditorium looking disillusioned
When i was younger, i used to cry my eyes out to this song so often that i couldnt listen to it, or i would freak out and get really panicky. Its strange to think powapowa is gone. His songs were there when i felt like shit, they didnt help me feel better, that wasnt what i needed (or still need, i guess) but they were and are there. Thanks, r.i.p. Edit: transgender, happy, on meds and still listening :3
Unrelated, but the fact all the other students being colorless and the cats having color, and the main girl not quite cat but also not exactly colorless as the others, sort of reminded me of myself in a way. Being taught two different languages, Korean and English, and exposed to two completely different cultures, and well my mother did what every other mother did, thinking what was best for their child so I don't blame her for getting too much information getting stuffed into my throat to the point I can't even do basic things others seem to do with ease. I was also bullied for being a weird kid unable to speak Korean properly, unable to understand their culture and such I wasn't even extremely good at English either, just everyday easy words were only used when I was trying to socialize. It still makes me feel dumb if I can't read some things my friends can In short, the girl looks really out of place, she's stuck between the middle and seems like she can't grasp the whatever reality is going on (Everyone going to school except her dancing with the cats, classes becoming harder and harder to the point you feel like drowning from the amount of pressure and information.) I can't write down every single thing that happened to me, languages weren't the only hard thing for me, and I've also recently figured out chunks of memories, some of my everyday life are completely missing til I found some old notes or any evidence of what happened back then when I was just a kid. I also cannot recall what happened in my elementary school years sadly Though I'm aware this song's meaning didn't mean all those nonsense, but I just wanted to entertain anyone who comes across this comment. :)
Tbh, im a bit like you. Just slightly different-im hispanic and know both spanish and english, but for some reason im not really able to speak spanish all that well but can talk in english much better.
This is the story about confriction between "What Chiyoko was" and "Chiyoko want to be" I have a feeling that viewer of NikonikoDouga implied something like that.
@@vocaploid This song is about Chiyoko wanting to be a musician, clearly siinamota himself, and how she gives everything up for her dream, looking for that reality that she wants to become instead of the one she sees with her own eyes. She indeed makes it, losing "everything that was of value" for her, thus her future version kills her with the guitar. Them there's the scenario in the end: at long last, your dream has come true! You're a true musician now, right? Then the voice laughs: isn't this what you wanted?
After he died, I'm noticing that in almost all of his songs there are hints of what was going on in his head and what was gonna happen. I wish somebody picked up on it before it was too late, all of these songs are especially sad now..
I feel this song is really important to understand how siinamota was feeling at the time It kind of fits about what he thinks about "growing up" What I'm about to write can be really unpopular but I guess that more interpretations can help understand the meaning of the song more xD Maybe the girl in headphones is the "Producer" she wants to be but school is holding her back? When she sees the girl in the window she just wants school day to be over to keep producing music but at 1:41 (looks like she is drowning) can mean school pressure gave her so much stress she tried to commit suicide, still had wounds (had the goat outfit because everyone saw her as a fool (1:48)), now she went upstairs chasing the headphone girl kind of meaning to her understanding she needs to get back on track to be able to achieve her dream (maybe the cats are a distraction so she deletes them to try and keep going) and the hurt girl falls down the well (which I guess is a kind of thing I don't really get? That means the headphone girl did go onto the well before because she showed up on the window) and now the headphone girl would like to get back at that point to not make the mistakes she did. The headphone girl now is chasing the hurt schoolgirl and when she does get to interact with her she is worried because she is doing dumb decisions and also disappointed because the logical thing was to study (maybe she failed school? Im saying the glasses mean either or "studies" or the student girl) and made her realize she had been performing in front of nobody- all of her actions are for her and from her and maybe she feels she fucked up in them (kind of like her future self scolding her or saying you shouldn't had done that) The game over can mean she already gave up, that that was the bad ending, like if she treated her life as a game (or the video just represents her life as a game) The close curtains can mean her "end" (maybe she committed suicide, or something else) This can sound really stupid but that's just the meaning I see If I had done this video xD

(There’s a prominent gay couple in the manga, so perhaps saying there could be a romance teased here isn’t too far off?)
Volume 3: After Mana learns she is pregnant, she cuts her hair short to her shoulders.
It’d be nice if there were some theories about Chiyoko’s Joining of the Cabinet that had the manga’s content in mind…
(If you’re seeing this again, it’s because UA-cam deleted my original comment. People seemed to find this insightful, so I’m reposting it for anyone who’s interested.)
*Tnx for re-uploading your comment!*( Now I want to read the Manga now! )
Omg thank you for this comment, i wanted to ask where can I read/buy the manga because i can't find it anywhere. Only the first volume is for sale and i can't find the second and third volume at all

i just noticed that her other self didn't kill her at 2:55 she actually just smashed her through the roof of that building they were on top of
huh?? no at that clip, she was about to hit her with it. although, i cant proof that she did since it doesn't show it.
thx for ds it helped
O b s c u r e ?
Exactly ! And she doesn’t have her glasses since the long haired girl took them.
I think the guitar strike is a reference to フリクリ. In that anime the violent but fun older girl hits MC on the head with a guitar in a very similar setting. Except in that show the MC gets powered up and has to try to save the town by swinging his own guitar. Looks like it doesn't work out that way for this MC
@@SleepyAylun The removing of the glasses is of course a common TV trope where the person turns out to look super attractive without them. To be an idol or to be superman the glasses have to come off. Looks like it doesn't work out that way for this MC
I think this may have also been, to an extent, PowapowaP's rebuttal to the optimism in Deco*27's ゆめゆめ. It's the same concept with the future dream self as a pop star. There's some visual and concept similarities too (Both movies were animated by 森井ケンシロウ). The difference is PowapowaP's character is left in an empty auditorium looking disillusioned

I was also bullied for being a weird kid unable to speak Korean properly, unable to understand their culture and such
I wasn't even extremely good at English either, just everyday easy words were only used when I was trying to socialize. It still makes me feel dumb if I can't read some things my friends can
In short, the girl looks really out of place, she's stuck between the middle and seems like she can't grasp the whatever reality is going on
(Everyone going to school except her dancing with the cats, classes becoming harder and harder to the point you feel like drowning from the amount of pressure and information.)
I can't write down every single thing that happened to me, languages weren't the only hard thing for me, and I've also recently figured out chunks of memories, some of my everyday life are completely missing til I found some old notes or any evidence of what happened back then when I was just a kid. I also cannot recall what happened in my elementary school years sadly
Though I'm aware this song's meaning didn't mean all those nonsense, but I just wanted to entertain anyone who comes across this comment. :)
Tbh, im a bit like you. Just slightly different-im hispanic and know both spanish and english, but for some reason im not really able to speak spanish all that well but can talk in english much better.

This is the story about confriction
between "What Chiyoko was" and
"Chiyoko want to be"
I have a feeling that viewer of NikonikoDouga implied something like that.
i understand
@@wow-gr3de what does this mean

I feel this song is really important to understand how siinamota was feeling at the time
It kind of fits about what he thinks about "growing up"
What I'm about to write can be really unpopular but I guess that more interpretations can help understand the meaning of the song more xD
Maybe the girl in headphones is the "Producer" she wants to be but school is holding her back?
Im saying the glasses mean either or "studies" or the student girl) and made her realize she had been performing in front of nobody- all of her actions are for her and from her and maybe she feels she fucked up in them (kind of like her future self scolding her or saying you shouldn't had done that)
The game over can mean she already gave up, that that was the bad ending, like if she treated her life as a game (or the video just represents her life as a game)
The close curtains can mean her "end" (maybe she committed suicide, or something else)
This can sound really stupid but that's just the meaning I see If I had done this video xD
