- More new models were in the pipeline. In 1960, Saab revealed the Nine Six (96). It was a little larger and rounder. The 96 had flow-through ventilation and a more powerful engine.
The 96 was the company's most successful model and was built throughout the 1960's. Production capacity grew from 30,000 vehicles to 50,000.
Ljungstrom pushed his engineers to find a replacement for the four-stroke engine. The two-stroke had serious limitations. They went to work designing, testing and building a new engine.
Customers were impressed with the overall engineering and build quality of the cars. They were rugged and sturdy cars that were built to last. But experience showed that the two-stroke engines didn't last as long as four-stroke engines. It was clear that the lack of a dedicated lubrication system meant that the parts of the two-stroke engine wore a lot faster. The oil made the engines smoky and once they were worn, they'd belch huge clouds of oily smoke. Unburned Oil also dripped out of the tail pipe.
The company continued to capitalize on the two-stroke engines one strength, its power to weight ratio. While the engineers worked on a replacement it kept entering cars in rallys. It was a period of outstanding success for Saab in rallying. It brought international renown to the company and turned driver Eric Carlson into a company hero.

Note to the artist who pieced this all together: Amazing job! Well done! My appreciation of my Saab’s, a ‘56 92B & a ‘65 Monte, has grown exponentially as a result of your video. TY!
The best ever was the 1964 version.
I also had a V4, but it was nothing special.
The kids with Civics and scions with 'fart-can' exhausts were SO Outclassed by a two-stroke 96 at full song!!! Better than that, all a Saab driver would need to do is take his route up a dirt road, and see how well any modern 'street racers' would do in chasing it there!
Awesome video thanks for sharing
I dream to buy one, they are so beautiful.
Thank you for this video.
Agreed! I loved the sound of them too, when I was a kid.
I love SAAB 92-93-96-99 God save SAAB!
I used to have a neighbour who had one like this series when I was a boy. At the time I thought it was the *ugliest* looking thing on four wheels. It wasn't until years later that I actually started to like the car.
