This is by far the best demonstration to tie a crown knot. The first move, holding the back strand under your thumb is the key to the simplicity. Thanks.
Excellent, and possibly the best video ever! It takes me back 71 years to Great Lakes Bootcamp (1950), where we were taught exactly this way, and in the same manner of little things to Help us remember, like "check your watch", to retain the direction of rotation, and rolling the larger lines under your foot to smooth out any uneven line.
That was an excellent UA-cam tutorial. Quick paced, no repeating unessential steps and easy to understand instructions with a good device to remember how to turn the line; check your watch. I wish all UA-cams were just like this. Thanks
Thank you. This is a great example of what a UA-cam tutorial should be. I thought the description of checking your watch was a really clear and easy to remember way of describing how to guide yourself to the next move. Very well done sir. I wish all vids were like yours.
I'm 67 years old. I've been making these since I was 13. I usually spend the first five minutes trying to get the starting loops where they belong. this is the first time I've ever seen how to do it easily. I agree, you are an excellent teacher. your motions are slow and easy to follow. thank you so much for taking the time.
I watched a few videos and couldn't get the crown knot. After seeing Your video bringing the middle strand and holding it with your thumb made absolute sense. Thanks...
Bought a narrowboat last year and wanted to learn how to splice my ropes - this was the first UA-cam video I found and it looks like it might be the most useful. Thanks!
Thanks for talking me through the making of a back splice. This was by far the clearest instruction of the many I looked at. It was bit tricky to begin with, as I was back splicing a 3.5 cm (1.4 in) diameter coconut boat rope, but the technique scaled up pretty well!
Excellent. Watched several and this was the clearest and best. Would be even better with rope with three different colored strands. But this was the best video of a crown knot and back splice.
i think the only suggestion I would make, especially for beginners would be to whip the ends of the strands with tape or something to help the ends from fraying while working with the splice. Other than that its a great explanation, Great Job!
Hi, I had the task of re-splicing a rope, and I was finding it difficult to redo the crown knot before the splicing because of the direction of the kinks already in the rope. This video was extremely helpful, and very concise in the directions for the crown knot. You explained the steps in 20 seconds :) Thank you very much!

This is what I wanted to say, but so much more eloquent than I could have put it. Thank you.
72, same same! 😂 😊
I watched 10 videos and could not figure it out.
Watched yours and had a perfect splice in 5 minutes.
Thank you so much.

When I was 15 I could make the crown & several different splices blind folded. Now that I’m 75 I appreciate your videos to bring it all back to me🤩.
Thanks for being so clear and easy to see. I was struggling with this until I came across your video. Thanks again.
