    I’ve been trying for a week to splice rope to chain for my anchor. Just couldn’t get it done from the videos I’ve seen on UA-cam. Then I saw this video with the crown knot. Suddenly I’m able to do it now! First of all thank you! But the crown knot only has two wraps on the chain-link instead of three, would this be sufficient for a anchor connection?

    Brings back memories! I used to know how to do a bit of ropework. I'd like to get back into it. We strike a ship's bell each year at the Remembrance Day ceremony in the fishing village I live in. I'd like to do a nicely knotted bell rope rather than what we have now. The tricky part would be attaching the rope to the groove set into the bottom below the 'ball' of the clapper, so that it won't come out...any suggestions?

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 років тому +1

      When I made my bell ropes I always included a stainless steel thimble in the eye, then that was secured to the bell with a shackle. This is just a simple tarred bell rope that I once did: igkt-solent.co.uk/making-tarred-bell-rope/ Whilst you are on that site, if you search for Bell Rope, a few other variants should com up. What is the name of your fishing village?

    Nice looking knot and easy to follow tutorial. Would you use this splice on the end of a chain? (... like for an anchor chain?) I saw some other chain back splice, but they only ended up with two strands over the link, where this would incorporate all three strands. I'm looking to streamline my anchor chain to pull up through a pully and into, I currently have a bulky clevis that gets hung up.

    • @KnottingKnots

If it holds a fat boy like me, then it should be fine. If you are making leads, maybe also consider the Marline Splice: ua-cam.com/video/l_bxz8Jn8E8/v-deo.html and the Cats Paw Splice: ua-cam.com/video/R9TkF4Z_ShU/v-deo.html They do make a lead look different to the norm.

      I found this in Ashley's 2858. The Link or Chain Splice has long been used in securing
      hemp tails to chain running rigging. Reeve two strands through a
      chain link or a ring, and lay one of these strands back into the rope,
      it the same time laying out the strand that did not pass through the
      chain. Join the ends as in a Long Splice. The remaining strand is
      backed and tapered as described in Splice #2747. There is a picture here: photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM-jru_cgzhOl7NDlkC9OCggb_d-hxaO7qjZ3qIa6GalbH9KBMG3q-BUmKuxKLHDw/photo/AF1QipPhzz4g32aN7im7hYyW3s4zYm6S9B_6bQaqqplx?key=T3diaVJ2STFBVm9VdDl6ODRpSDdBOEk1SlFMQmxn

      Found this in Ashley's: 2859. William A. Larson’s Ring Splice, made on a ring clew in
      yacht sails. It is stuck as illustrated, then each strand in turn is tapered
      and back spliced seven or eight tucks. The last two or three yarns
      are stuck and backed through the strand, instead of under it.

    • @dbb1292
      @dbb1292 6 років тому +1

      A ring could be useful when you repeatedly attach the rope to different chains, hooks, shackles, clamps and the like, it would prevent a lot of wear on the rope which could happen with just an eye splice. It also would be a great way to attach clips as with leashes and leads ropes. I wish I had thought of this back when I worked with horses.

    Surprised you didn't twist up the three strands tightly as you took them through the main rope like you did in the video on splicing a loop. In that vid you emphasised the importance of keeping the twist tight in the three strands as you spliced them in. In this video you only mentioned it once and more importantly you didn't tighten the strands and the finished splice looked really untidy in consequence.
