For me, I always felt like Luna Lovegood seemed kind of autistic. She is incredibly observant, has a passion for magical creatures, doesn't care about social norms, she is blunt and doesn't mince her words and she doesn't care what other people think about her. She has a sing song style of speaking and makes too much eye contact.
It all makes too much sense.

She's my favourite character! Ok I just googled it, and apparently a lot of autistic people send Evanna Lynch (actor who plays Luna) fan mail. Clearly she resonates a lot with autistic people... so in my mind she's now autistic.

I think most of us can identify themselves better with autism coded characters than with „autistic characters“. I feel like when a non autistic writer has an autistic character in mind they always fall under a one dimensional stereotype that doesn`t really exist in the autism world. While characters that are not written to be autistic are allowed to be complex and multi faceted and beautiful. But that is just what we are too.

    • @bebebebeebeb6094
      @bebebebeebeb6094 3 роки тому +11

Exactlyyyy. When people try to write autistic people, they want to emphasize the autism by pouring every single trait know to man into one, rather by taking into account that they are people too. They never make them autistic and people; they just want to make it “as autistic as they can” which is always a very gigantic, unrelatable stereotype. They do this with a lot of minorities; other disabled people, women, BIPOC, fat people, LGBTQIA+ people. They never want to see them as actual people.

I agree, they are so clinical with designated characters, when in reality, everyone experiences neurodivergence differently. I think that is the hardest truth to accept (at least, for me personally), all these stereotypes (however we’re neurodivergent) were written by judging people who are different, not by their individual souls/beings. We are like an iceberg, with the surface being so small compared to what’s underneath, not a statement of a single social interaction. Stereotypes have broken my heart sometimes and it certainly is a challenge I have to confront even when I’m at home.

@@bennichol1510 Amen, that movie was horrible for any community mentioned. The fact that Sia had her cameo be illegally buying opioids for people in a different country makes me breathe “flames each time I talk”. Sia has EDS, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, (which both my mom&I have). Everyone with chronic pain (like those with EDS) gets constantly criticised by pain clinics (no matter our pristine track record, nor how many pee tests we take and pass) and if we don’t follow everything they say, even if the fault is their’s, they will refuse to fill meds we need to have for any quality of life and even a med that is dangerous to abruptly stop taking. Sia fed into that and did harm to the reputation of anyone in chronic pain by flamboyantly breaking the rules in her own appearance and in HER own movie. I completely agree with you, that film is the worst! ✨Thank you for letting me pour my heart out! I really appreciate that our community exists so we can share what gets under each other’s skin and what can help us best cope🖤✨

One of my favourite autism-coded characters is New Scamander from the Fantastic Beasts series. He shown to be uncomfortable with physical contact, is very empathetic (something autistic people are stereotyped as not being), is socially awkward and has animals as a special interests like I did as a kid. There’s a interview Eddie Redmayne did where he said he suspected New was autistic as well

The thing I find great about Newt is that not only is he knowledgeable about magical creatures, it also feels like a subtle implication that he's smart but not *because* of his other traits, he knows a lot due to what I call the brute force method, aka absorbing so much information and context on a subject that you look like a savant to regular people, I really liked his character even if I'm not particularly jazzed about the writer herself, same goes for Lovegood, she's got a good vibe

No one talks about this but she is 100% autistic coded- she is super intelligent, driven (very all or nothing thinking), thrives off routines, checklists and planning, prepares and scripts for various social interactions and has so many hyper fixations throughout the series but also struggles and learns a lot with friendships and dating. I’m obsessed with Elsa from frozen. I’ve never met a character I could relate to more. Her lack of control over her powers at the beginning remind me of my seizures and how they separate me from society. But the beautiful part of her powers reminds me of my autism. In the second movie the song show yourself is an autism anthem if I ever did see one. I cried of joy when I saw it the first time. To see a character that has such a tough time just because of the way she is bloom is the most beautiful Disney movie I’ve ever seen. She’s always made me feel less alone. Your videos also make me feel less alone. Autism is truly beautiful.🤍❄️

I came here to say this, Show Yourself is everything!! ❤️
I know it's paltry but I genuinely don't think I've ever felt as seen as when Elsa is trying to play charades (struggling to jump in with a guess, comes out with something way too long/specific when she does guess, holding the cushion for Safety and Input, does her best to participate but actually just stares off to the side and waves and shrugs a lot, wants to hang out with her fam but Can't Quite with the group activity... yep!!!!).
That scene would have been a lifesaver as a kid as a point of reference when trying to justify it to other kids and even adults who though I just needed to 'just go for it' and 'give it a try' when that was me trying 🙄
Loving that 4/5 characters in this video were women too!

Thank you so much for adding Anne! I’m an autistic and ADHD girl and I think it would be an understatement to say I relate to her, Anne is basically me but in fictional form, I even have inside jokes with my friends and family that someone has written me on paper (even before I was diagnosed), Anne is definitely a 100% autistic and ADHD, especially in the new Netflix show Anne with an E (which is one of my favourite shows of all time). Also, when I watched Amelie with my cousin, we were about 13 and I wasn’t diagnosed yet but after the film ended, he asked me “how did you feel watching a film about one of your people?” and for the longest time I wondered what he meant by that, but now I know lol. Representation is so important, I can never stress that enough!! (Sorry if my comment is too long). A BIG one for me personally is Data from Star Trek Next Generation. I used to watch reruns of that show with my family as a kid, and I barely remembered anything from the show other than how much I INSTANTLY imprinted on Data and loved his character more than any of the other characters, and I was never really sure why that was until I just recently sat down to watch the series as an adult, and within the span of the first episode I was like "OOOHHH, oh okay yeah I get it now," because of just how HEAVILY autistic-coded he was. I literally cannot imagine a neurotypical reading of his character. One of the biggest things to me is how throughout the series it's repeatedly stated by both other characters and himself that he "doesn't experience human emotions," yet not only is it shown time and time again that Data definitely *does* experience emotions, just not in the same way as the average neurotypical human, but also the very fact that Data desperately *wants* to understand and "correctly" express human emotions shows at least some level of emotion inherent, and it's also an incredibly relatable experience as an autistic person who wishes they could understand how to navigate a neurotypical world.

One of my favourite characters that I am almost certain is autistic is Kate Weatherall from The Mysterious Benedict Society! She is “quirky” and loud in her opinions, and goes about things differently to everyone else. The other characters even say that she views the world differently. She carries around a bucket which she never parts with unless it is absolutely necessary and is super protective of, and even gets upset when people criticise it - perhaps she personifies it (a common autistic trait!). She also has very little facial expression change when she is speaking, which I’m not sure could be intentional, or even the actor Emmy DeOliviera could be autistic too! Kate is one of my favourite characters, and this show is soooo good!

Honestly I think all of the kids are autistic in very different ways. And quite possibly there are more characters who are autistic than aren't. Sticky has his incredible memory, Rainie thinks about things in very uncommon ways, and Constance is also very blunt and says things that others think is rude all the time and she also has super sensitive hearing. I feel like I would also consider Number 2 to be autistic as well, it just not as obvious because she's not the main focus of the story.

I think the characters Detective William Murdoch and Detective Llewelyn Watts from the show Murdoch Mysteries are two different examples of Autistic men. Murdoch is very structured with his appearance, the way things should be arranged and has issues with social cues, can’t ignore or let go of pursuit of the truth and obsessive interests (inventing). Watts is quite opposite in his clothes don’t match, extremely disorganized, has issues with social cues, doesn’t understand personal space and sees the word differently. And they are both really good detectives because of those things!

I remember, I watched Anne Of Green Gables with my mother when I was twelve, and I remember the scene where she found the dead mouse in what I think was custard powder and she felt sad about it. And I remember when her teacher, Miss Stacey, was going to put a teaspoon full of the dessert into her mouth and Anne, unable to stay silent, called out, "Don't eat it, Miss Stacey!"
I agree with you about Sherlock Holmes, too. Looking back on my school years, when we had to do creative writing, I found it easier to start with facts and make a story, than to be completely imaginative. I remember once, when I was in a writers' group, we had to write on the topic, "The Headline/Banner Shouted," and I wrote about a socially awkward teenage boy, who went to his school formal and one of the popular girls wanted to dance with her. He thought she just wanted to laugh at him, but what was happening was, the girl had been out with some other guys, and they were superficial and wanted just one thing. She felt safe with the awkward guy. Then, after a year, the socially awkward guy was doing his Christmas shopping and he found the girl was working in a record store (I set it in 1975) and she slipped him her phone number. He happened to meet her some months later, and she'd broken up with a guy but had two tickets to the ABBA Concert, and he went with her. It was based around the newspaper saying, "They're Here!" I found it easier to create characters of autistic people like myself.

I know it can be touchy to label a villain with nerodivergency or a disorder, but especially in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, I kept seeing Baron Zemo as being on the autistic spectrum.
He fixated on an idea (superhumans) and spent as much time as he could researching and acting on said fixation. Sure the fixation was born from hate and not a positive interest, it’s still a fixation.
What really stood out to me about him, though, was when I realized he’s good at reading people, bad at reading the room. He can see patterns in the behaviors of others, and use them to his advantage. But actually socializing? Completely awkward. Before my autism was diagnosed, I turned to studying psychology to try to understand other people more, and maybe figure out why I always felt like there was something I was missing socially. It was easy to see Zemo as the result of an undiagnosed autistic leaning into psychology to try to fill in the gaps in social skill.

Over the years various comic writers used several recurring characteristics when writing Poison Ivy of all villains wich lead a bunch of fans to believe that she's autism coded.
When given the chance she prefers to stay by herself, her special interest since childhood are plants and botany, she can't stand it when someone is invading her space but has no issue invading others (that's usually a characteristic found in many autistic children) and she frequently starts rambling about chemistry and plants.
It's clearly unintentional but it's there.

She takes things very literal (such as in Vision Impossible when she freaks out when Dr. Sleevemore jokes with her twice), she sees a pediatric dentist as a high schooler and still is very afraid to the point where she freaks out when the dentist tells her she has a cavity and she locks the dentist out of his office and poses as a dentist to try to escape, she’s very clumsy, and her special interest is fashion design. It is also the focus of the episode Juicier Consequences where her friends and family consider her self-centered. She has a savant like gift of being psychic and having visions, and she has a severe comorbid allergy to mushrooms.

my favorite coded characters are the core six from miraculous ladybug! leaving aside the fact the show is a BIG spin of mine literally anyone in the core six can be autistic if you think enough about it like marinette canonically misses cues (a lot lmao), could be read as dyspraxic too, and her spins would be fashion and Adrien! the way she behaves towards the boys she likes is something I've seen happens in multiple autistic women including myself for some reason too; theres also the hyperfocus on anything she starts especially if it relates to her spins. theres also the fact that she canonically scripts conversations and often relies on alya for that. plus, I also see her as having ADHD so there is even more stuff that overlaps.
for adrien I mean, feather boy canonically has little to no knowledge of social cues, has the extreme sense of justice, and the way his father repeats at least once a season the whole "you're not like other kids" argument well, it speaks for itself. plus it's canon he experiences hypersensitivity when having the suit on.
then, we have alya, there isnt a lot to say about traits she displays? but she tends to miss cues too, doesnt know when pushing can be too much and her spin is very blatantly superheroes to the point of risking her wellbeing for the sake of getting material for her blog
same thing as with alya, the lack of screen time limits what can be said about nino?? but if you reach a bit the fact he always has headphones on him and the way he can get carried away by an idea and doesnt stop until finding stuff to back it up with could also say something.
theres luka too, canonically semi verbal although not explicitly stated (well they say he prefers music to words as he believes words to not be able to express what he feels to a full extent) and has a deeeep spin in music; he's also shown to be hypempathetic
thenn, last but certainly not least, we move on to the most BLATANTLY coded one: my girl kagami I mean, the entirety of her interaction with mari in Ikari Gozen was autistic af. used an app with tips to make friends, scripted the entire thing and even is shown to struggle with facial expressions. that, summed up to he bluntness, missing cues and having a hard time while reading feelings, low tolerance to frustration, setting on an objective and even getting akumatized when the way didnt go as she planned, idk, that seems pretty coded. oh, and I'd say she has spins on fencing/kendo and drawing!

Cause I have a bunch of characters that are very heavily autistic coded that people undermine cause they went through unrelated trauma. People can’t even differentiate asocial behavior and a social deficit. Like a character from MHA; Todoroki, is very clearly autistic coded, his trauma aside, there’s just way too many indicators.
