NTs don't know the struggle of having to plan and set alarms to remember to eat.

I have a hard time with waiting and waiting to eat or drink water, til it's too late and my brain stops working, I get really cranky, don't know what I need to do, or even blacking out. I'll be like, "What's wrong with me? I don't understand," and my boyfriend will always say, "When's the last time you ate?" to which I reply, "Uhh... yesterday?" 🤦‍♀️

I’m 25 years old and was diagnosed with ASD and ADHD last month. And I agree about the emotional roller coaster; it was a strange realization, suddenly knowing the reason I reacted to things more strongly. I wasn’t just more sensitive, I’ve been experiencing my emotions at a higher volume the entire time.

I’m wondering if I’m also autistic because I related to that too. It feels like two sides of you constantly battling yourself. I’m glad she actually differentiated and compared how it is to have both and how they interact.

Lol I just read a manga about a character that’s like this, which Is also what I relate to
      *Shameless recommendation ensues*
It’s called “Shounen Note” and it’s about singing. I recommend everyone to check it out, because it really is a cool manga, and I *suspect* the main character to be Autistic (a personal lil head canon lol, I have no idea if other people think this too)

I was first diagnosed with ADHD when I was 8. I had struggles concentrating in school an I even went to therapy for it. But it was clear that I was in the wrong place. Under the right conditions I can concentrate extremely well, when it is silent and I can work on my own on something that I am interested in. I also don’t have any other ADHD criteria. Only last year I received my right diagnosis: ASD 🙃

omg yesss, i had my autistic diagnosis and always thought i had adhd as well but haven’t gotten test for it. PSA: just a tip,use the word criteria it mainly means the same as symptoms but criteria means in conditions not illness.

Mrs Kay I feel it☺️🌝 It’s like your whole life you have been wondering, why there is always so much „wrong with you“. Not one diagnosis, not one tough time, but dozens. With an autism diagnosis it becomes so much more clear, the underlying conditions and deficits. It is also a chance for therapy of the comorbidities like depression and anxiety. So go girl🙌🏻 get that diagnosis!

Lists on paper, index cards, and calendars are all great suggestions that people can use however, I agree there are drawbacks to them like forgetting to keep track of such things countering the ability to cope with the executive struggles in the first place! I personally believe writing lists down on a smart phone to be the best way and completely agree that setting reminders is an almost fail proof method!

Executive functioning: I have frozen groceries in my car, but stopping for "just a few minutes" at a park on the way home to play Pokemon Go is no big deal to me. And when I realize I've been there for over an hour, I have to finish that before I can consider it's time to leave. Leaving and coming back is NOT an option. Ice cream re-freezes back into its shape, it's fiiiiine. It's basically its own ice pack keeping itself cold. 😅🙄

I have ADD and Aspergers and they used to medicate me so high that I was acting like I was high on drugs and wasn’t aware of my surroundings and when I became an adult I demanded to be taken off the meds. Now I’m on Lamotrigine and my life couldn’t be better. It zaps the bad stuff. It makes me high on cloud 9 but without affecting me mentally. I’m able to concentrate and be happy. I have always been a bubbly perky hyper person always having to keep busy but I like being that way. I’ll never understand why society views that as a bad thing. I only ever had speech therapy and I’m thankful for that. My parents never cared that my interests were different from other kids and they don’t support forcing autistics to be the same way as everyone else. Sadly my folks are against stimming and yes they believe I should be silent in public but inside the house they let me be myself. The only thing they disagree with really is me helping others because they feel it’s wrong to get involved in people’s lives because they feel helping people prevents people from taking care of themselves which is a bunch of nonsense. I come from a religion LDS Mormon/Christian family so I’m constantly under pressure to only care for family and they twist everything that our doctrine teaches and they don’t even follow the Bible yet they lecture me about it. What our prophets actually say is to have obligation to family but that doesn’t mean to reject friends. They want us to get involved but some Mormon families sadly twist that into lies. I’m more Christian than Mormon at this point and although still a member, I pretty much left due to the prejudice from members. I still read and value my Book of Mormon because many things in it completely match the Bible but I don’t follow anything in it that I feel is false. Every religious book has flaws including the Bible itself but I consider it to be the most Holy. Book of Mormon may have the least errors and be the most accurately correct but the Bible is the most Holy and the most true. There’s a difference between correct and true. Correct simply means grammar wise and error wise meaning it was the least mistranslated. True means the closest to Christ. For me, all the books are mistranslated so I pretty much follow whatever I feel is true. I am surrounded by hateful Christians, Mormons, Catholics and even other autistics who judge me for being different. I thought all of us were good kind people but I found out the hard way not everyone autistic has the mind and heart of a child and some of them are downright mean and cruel. I’m against ABA as are all my friends because they were victims of that horrible practice and although I understand why it’s used and understand why people support it, I don’t feel it’s right to use it to remove someone’s interests or force them to mask their emotions to be like everybody else. That’s mind control in my opinion. What we need to do is remove the bad things within ABA such as rewards, punishment, interest replacement, emotional masking, stimming elimination, Ect; and take away the “training” aspect and replace it with play based therapy. I know a few ABA therapists and they have switched to play therapy and admitted it’s far more effective and has a 72% success rate as where ABA is 50/50. Sadly, play therapy still does interest replacement but they do it by not filling the room with the child’s interests and instead introducing them with different interests so they can keep their current interests at home so their system is very different. I know ABA is a touchy subject because half autistics support it (which I’ll never understand because of the mind control aspect) and some don’t support it so all sides need to be respected but something has to be done. Half of us are against autism, half of us support autism and it’s time to stop fighting over autism politics and start empowering all sides. Think of it like X Men. Those who hate their autism, let them support Autism Speaks and ABA but don’t force it on those who are against it. The goal isn’t to shut them businesses down but to change them. As an advocate that’s my goal someday is to hopefully get Autism Speaks to support the diversity movement and change ABA from mind control dog training into focusing on the actual life skills. Those who had good ABA that did not have mind control, you are the lucky ones. Help us fight for the kind that doesn’t involve eliminating harmless autistic behaviors. Help us fight for the kind that only teaches life skills and doesn’t train to mask. No matter which side you support, remember we are all autistic here and we all have different viewpoints and it needs to be respected. We can be the change if we try :)

However, the tape analogy is what I feel so much. Do any of those traits ever bother you or have you also gotten use to it?

I was 7 (1997/98) and the school told my parents that they would test me but change nothing about my structure. So if I failed, I failed. It took moving to a private school and coming back at 12/13 (2002) and finally getting look at by a team of professionals to see what’s going on. ASD and ADHD. I do struggle in school horribly.

Anything you can do would be helpful. I have been diagnosed with ADHD, possible BiPolar. But there are so many traits within the ASD that feel SOOOOO familiar. Things that I don't even realize I do. I am 45, so I have been masking for a VERY long time. I can remember getting upset as a kid and wringing and waving my hands and my grandmother smacking my hands because she thought I was being hyperactive and she hated it. I can remember watching other people to try and understand things. I can remember being more comfortable with teacher and kids younger than me. With eye contact, even NOW I have to talk to myself about doing enough but not too much eye contact. But then on the other side, having issues with lying. ASD people seem to have a difficulty with lying, but ADHD seems to have no difficulty doing that. Sometimes my lying can seem almost pathological, other times, I am hyper honest. Don't ever ask me if something looks good on you. LOL! Certain things I am drawn too, certain textures I can't stand.. Like that fake soft fluffy stuff that seems to catch on skin or almost feels like there is soap in it.. Just thinking about it gives me the ebby jeebies. I some times have issues with food textures... like yogurt or pudding. But other times, I don't have issues. Certain smells make me gag... Like the smell of vegan cheese.. Just gross.. I have always loved heavier blankets. Like homemade quilts... My Aunt had this blanket that was two really soft old school cotton sheets with a thick heavy blanket in between. It was heavy but thin and I loved it. I remember this one blanket 30 years after using it and I miss it. Comfort things are important. I have an obsession with blankets, pillows, sweatshirts, robes, fluffy sweaters. I can have meltdowns when there is something too tight. Bras can be hell for me.
I am just trying to figure this all out. AND how to embrace this and actually be a success in my life. I don't know what to do. I didn't realize until recently that this could be one of the reasons why I have always felt like an alien.

Could you explore a bit your experiences as someone with both autism and adhd and compare that to people who only have one or the other? There is not much research on the subject, so I would like to know how symptoms differ. I think it could be really helpful for researching both autism and adhd in the future. (Plus im just curious :p)

There is much said about the different manifestations of neurodiversity in men and women, but I believe it can be a bit more fluid than that. Though I'm an autistic male (straight and cis-gendered), my autism manifests in a way that is typically seen as female, and I find myself identifying much more with autistic women than men. (This is also likely why I didn't get diagnosed until I was 30.) Does anyone else have a similar experience?

Chloe - can please not wear earrings with writing on - SOoooo distracting.
Have you done any videos on conditions that aren't part of ASD/ADHD but are commonly co-morbid . I have both but also alexithymia (I think), rejection sensitive dysphoria & selective mutism. Having the last two together has been absolute murder.

So, I've just recently been diagnosed with Autism, though I'm very sure that I have ADHD as well... it's just that if the Autism diagnosis took 2 years (which, compared to others, is actually quite quick... but it still _feels_ very long) at best... _WHAT'S THE ADHD DIAGNOSIS GOING TO BE LIKE?_

You talk so quickly that even though I hear you, I have trouble listening.
Slow it down, and place importance on the crux of your comments. Then you're message is understood.
I have Autism myself, so I know it's not an Aspie thing.
Love your work........but slow it down 😃👍💃

I’m autistic too, and it’s individual for all Autistics so what you might think isn’t an Autism thing could be an autism thing for someone else ☺️ She, like myself also has ADHD, and talking loud/fast can be a part of that, and sometimes Autism too! There is an option to change the playback speed if it’s too fast 😁

As an Aspie I also talk very very fast and often can't regulate my volume, speech abnormalities and regulation issues of all kinds can be part of autism it's just a different part of the spectrum. Personally I'm extremely similar to her in the way we speak so people who talk slowly or less expressively I can't pay attention to whatsoever. Please don't take this as me invalidating you because that is completely understandable!! Like the other reply said I would either use subtitles and/or change the playback speed (I actually turn my speed up for some creators lol). So it CAN be an autism thing for sureeee it just isn't something that you experience.
