It's weird that the Spadefish has eggs in game but none of the other small herbivores, you'd think it wouldn't like the others or they all would, one of the two.
My favorite small fish is the hover fish! There so freakin adorable and remind me of little frogs. I realized that they are a valuable food source early-game for two reasons: they are pretty easy to catch and are quite nutritious! The fact that they may be intelligent is super cool too, but makes me feel bad for eating them....
My favorites are Gary and Reginald mainly because my friend and I were in a call while playing the game and I caught them and was like,"That's a funny name, imma keep it."
Reefback's egg (if you spawn one) looks exactly the same as Spadefish's egg, just much bigger in size. The two looks physiologically similar too, so I think there could be something between these two species.
Imagine a Subnautica themed sushi restaurant... I've been hoping to see a vid covering the tiny inhabitants of the deep, dark, scary 4546B. And you came through with the goods! Sorry I'm late, got a bit sick and only saw this today. Good luck!

5:06 well, you could say that ,yes , it is related to the cave crawler because of it's eye but it could also be related to the reefback considering it's body shape and the fct that the eggs are the same. if you take that into consideration though, it would technically mean that the cave crawler and reefback are related, which is a bit crazy, considering the size diferrence
I never noticed the Hoverfish had those details. Now I'm starting to wonder if maybe the Hoverfish are descendants from reptilians/amphibians. That probably sounds weird, but hear me out. First off, there's the expressions it has and how different its head looks compared to other fish in the game, like Bacon said. That head instantly made me think of a gecko's, along with its body shape and feet especially. I know the game says what the purpose of their "feet" looking like that is, but when I look at them I'm almost seeing suction cups. Perhaps those "feet" were originally for that purpose, or they originally had a slightly different shape. I honestly can totally imagine a slightly altered version of the little guys having either "suction cup hands and feet" or simply originally having big or sticky fingers and toes meant for climbing rocks and trees. Perhaps they lived on the Floating Island before evolving into fish so they wouldn't starve because their food was dwindling on such a small island. Or maybe even planet 4546B wasn't almost completely underwater in the past, and after whatever thing that happened that expanded the oceans (or something like that), the Hoverfish's ancestors adapted to survive. Just my thoughts. Thanks for pointing these cute little things out, Bacon! (...Now I want a Hoverfish for a pet...)
Species that look like each other or have similar properties aren't necessarily related (See ichtyosaur and Dolphins) Some traits are simply just beneficial regardless of genus and time period.
Spadefish is probably related to the Reefback Leviathan. Their overall body plan is very similar, from the shape of their body overall, to the form of their tail. They even inhabit the same biome.
I agree considering the end of the forest left me and my friends laughing from how stupid it was and the ending of subnautica is still burned into my head and I haven't stopped thinking about it since I first beat it.
Me When I got Subnautica: stays in shallow water and every Thing is wholesome Me a few days later: hears warper message on radio Me now: I was not prepared
Awesome little primer video on them overall. The PDA actually mentions that the green antennae as it calls them on the Hoopfish are used to help it swim in some weird scientific way I don't recall off the top of my head. My favorite is the Hoverfish of course, but I'm also quite fond of the Oculus' ancestry as a cave-evolved Peeper and the Holefish's "Muppet" mouth movements 😄 I also have a sneaking suspicion the Garryfish was named after a certain sponge's pet snail with those eyes 👀
A few things I think you might have forgot! Hoopfish: The description given by the PDA says that the Hoopfish "uses the fine green antennae which encircle its body to alter the composition of the water in front of it, allowing it to 'sail' in the low density space" - (Copied from the PDA). This may also explain why you shouldn't eat the antennae. Boomerang & Magma-rang: The tips of its tails are actually the ends of its digestive tracts! The reason it glows so brightly is due to its diet. It eats bioluminescent corals, and the left over residues build up and eventually lead to its iconic glow. This sounds a bit disgusting, but, assuming that it has the same build, it can help us find out the Magma-rang's diet in a plant-sparse region! Maybe they gather nutrients from the rocks or magma? Holefish: They are considerably rarer than most other small fish and the PDA also makes note of this. Does the hole have a purpose? Hoverfish: The cooked and cured recipes for the Hoverfish seem to reference that it has "firm reptilian flesh" Reginald: Despite being so small, it somehow has more food points than the Peeper! Also, it is abnormally large when cooked or cured with the fabricator, not sure whether that is a bug or not Eye-eye: I know this wasn't featured, but: The PDA states that the Eye-eye is possibly a relative of the Peeper and another descendant of the Alpha Peeper, as it has a very large singular eye.
@@TheLastBacon I just checked, and the Hoopfish "uses the fine green antennae which encircle its body to alter the composition of the water in front of it, allowing it to 'sail' in the low density space" - Copied from the PDA The fact that the Hoopfish can do that is quite impressive!
I think there is a significant amount of convergent evolution in this game where two creatures evolve to look very similar because they take up a similar Niche despite not being related in any way
You should do a video on the geology/geography of 4546b. Not just specific areas but the landmass as a whole amd how they blend amd fit together. It can be your first subnautica/below zero crossover.
