Subnautica has its fair share of strange alien creatures that want to take a chunk out you, but there could have been so many more if some of these cut creatures made it into the full release. Today we look at some of the candidates that didn't quite make it into the final game!

Thanks for watching 'Subnautica's Crazy Cut Creatures!' - Ігри
I'm so glad you're making a video on the Ice Dragon. Even to this day, it makes me upset knowing such a cool creature got cut. A cold empty biome with a dragon lurking in it is just what Below Zero needed and where Subnautica 1 thrived. I'm dying to know why they removed especially after having a full model. It seems like something they put a lot of work into. It must've been hard letting it go before the full game released.
Yeah its seems it was cut in 2019 after one of Unknown Worlds developer conferences, it seems the whole biome was scrapped which meant the Ice Dragon unfortunately went aswell
I think it was ultimately deemed too similar to the sea dragon so they decided not to go through with it. You never know though, I'm pretty sure every creature that got a full model was eventually added at some point, I remember the ghost leviathan was just a disembodied model for a really long time until eventually it got added, and the rock puncher and giant lily pads were both only models for a long time, and they eventually both made it into below zero
@@thomasdevlin5825 I mean familiarity in a game doesn't ruin it. It seems like its brinicle affects would've been different anyhow, so it certainly has a different feel
Espcially since below zero was so barebones....it needed more biomes and more creatures yet they cut so many.
The reason they didn't add it is because in the fandom a lot of people were saying they didn't want it in and that it looked bad basically there was this whole war of people wanting and not wanting it in and sadly we lost the Negative Nancie's won by crybabies that just because it had Dragon in the name it was gonna be a copypasta of the Sea Dragon Leviathan even tho the Chelicerate is the counterpart of the Reaper and the Shadow kinda is the counterpart to the Ghost
My heart aches for the sandworm :) It walked so the ice worm could run....or breach.
Yep I found that one during my research! They really love worms over at Unknown Worlds xD
@@iAletho It seems a major theme of creatures is to be long and slender lol
@@iAletho wormlike bodies are cool, i really love serpentine creatures
Ok but what the fuck happened to the dead ice worm that can be scanned unlike the live one
Hello
Knowing how strong a Bobbit worm is, it would be absolutely terrifying to see how strong the sand spear would be
I'm not sure any of the Aurora's survivors would be lasting very long!
Thats exactly what I thought of when seeing the sand spear, especially seeing it embedded in the sand
I was actually bummed out when the crested reaper didn't make it into the game, I think it would have fit right in. We already have a giant version of one of the smallest creatures in the game, it would have been a cool parallel to see a miniature version of one of the largest creatures in the game
Yeah, that thing honestly sounded (and looked) super cool and interesting! And the idea of it hunting in pods would actually make it a significant threat and would make up for its lack of size.
What is that large version of small creature
@@thunderred5263 The titan holefish
I would have loved to see the Ice Dragon in Below Zero. Just such an amazing design! Also yes cute creatures like the Shadow Leviathan :). He is friend shaped haha!
A cute and friendly dragon Kirby!
Listen here Aetho why are you doing a video on the cut creatures, when you haven’t done one on the shadow leviathan 😂
@allyephraums6417 You might be happy next week ;)
@@iAletho YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!

To me, the craziest cut creature is without a doubt the Single Cell Landscape.
If you know, you know…
We know!
I know
@@iAletho
There’s a lot of potential for you to make a video about that horrifying yet fascinating terror of the deep.
the single cell biome couldve been sick if you could drive your vehicles *through* the big globby mass that makes it up, needing to fend off encroaching tendrils and repair any harm as you work your way to a hostile fluidous... *thing*.. just to reach something or somewhere
Out of all these creatures I wish made it in was the ice dragon as it would be terrifying and awe inspiring to see! I'm also really glad that the rotnest was removed as I have trypophobia. Great vid as always and thanks for covering these would be creatures!
The Ice Dragon is definitely a solid pick Shiny! I'd love to have seen the Crested Reaper in the game but I suppose it wasn't meant to be :(
@@iAletho may those two forever live in our hearts and minds or until someone mods them in!
Ice Dragon should have been put in the East and West Arctic biomes. Those areas felt too barren to me, so turning them into Below Zero's equivalent of the Dunes would have been great.
Would be cool to make those areas way more full of resources too
The only dune-like area is really just the caldera with the chelicerate
It’s so sad to see that the Ice Dragon didn’t make it into the game. It seemed like it would’ve been on par with the Reaper in terms of fear. My one issue with Below Zero was that the Leviathans weren’t really all that scary. Yea you’d get the occasional scare but they really don’t strike as much fear in my opinion. I feel like the ice dragon could’ve changed that.
I honestly care more about the loss of the deep artic and methane ice caves than the ice dragon. Such a cool biome that would have been great to make belowzero feel like it has more options. I have tried being there and the place even artifically makes it much darker than it should be
That's something I'll need to look into doomchrome! I need to learn more about Below Zero's development in general :)
Going over cut contents is always so interesting ! Even more with universe as interesting and unique as Subnautica
They're definitely unique, and probably terrifiying to meet in a dark ocean xD
@@iAletho Subnautica is both fascinating and terrifying
The cut creatures are so cool its a shame they didnt make it into the final game
Yeah a lot of these are really cool! Hopefully we will see some of them again one day!
i really like the gardener eel, ice breaker, and the Thalassacean. I generally feel like bz needs some more „special“ creatures. (i really like bz anyways)
They'd definitely have made the game feel more alien and unique, maybe Subnautica 3 will "revive" some of them!
I really loved the Gardeneer eel because it really shows how wild symbiosis can get with aliens how it has a literal plant inside it to create food for itself!
4:36 that version of the sea monkey can keep that power cell or anything it takes from me its to adorable to take what ever it took
Below zero had so much potential, some of these early concepts would make the game way different
Yeah I would love to have seen some of these in the final version!
I feel like replacing the current void leviathan in below zero with the ice dragon would have been interesting, the current void leviathan is terrifying but imagine adventuring into the darkness of the void and hearing one of the most blood curling roar, you turn around if fear but you've already gone to far, the player gets struck by a force that does 1\3 of the seatrucks health and slows the Vehicle, after, the player turns around to a beast as big as a ghost leviathan coming for another strike, you manage to get back out the void but not before one last hit putting the seatruck ar 1\3 health.
I feel like I got to invested in this.
Honestlt im leaning either the crested reaper or the ice dragon. The crested reaper could have been similar to the cryptosuchus but with more of the straight charge at you that the reaper had. I also feel like having a biome with one singular massive creature would be absolutely insane so the ice dragon would have been amazing
I agree akane! Both would have been really cool :)
im gonna get cancer and use my wish to make unknown worlds replace the void chelis with one big ass ice dragon leviathan. its for the greater good
What i really like is that the cut creatures weren't completely scrapped the early sea monkey became triops, the sand spear became the tentacle things or the ice worm whichever one works, the gardener eel became vent garden, etc
You didn't mention how the sea monkeys early design was reworked into the trivalve, similar to what happened with the crashfish and cuddle fish in the first game
I now want all these cut creatures :(
Also have you heard of the single cell biome because its sorta a cut creature bc its just a big creature that drags you down
Maybe one day G21! :)
0:09 this is why you should put cuddlefish and penglings into bioreactors-
A necessary sacrifice!
I’m in love with the Electrogami and Shockstar
Their designs are peak and they would’ve made a fun different electric enemy in the waters
I always loved looking at the concept art images for both of the Subnautica games. They're always very interesting and cool to see, as they're usually very unique in design and/or function
new aletho vid!!
this was worth the wait. thank you, aletho.
It's a good day when Aletho uploads
And you're first comment Miliradian!
@@iAlethoWhats even better is i got the notification just when i started eating
Not only would the Ice Dragon be a really cool enemy but it wouldve been a really cool counterpart to the Sea Dragon from the original game
Hey Aletho, was looking forward to your next video.
Thanks Warduxe! It was a long time coming! :D
Hey Aletho, I just wanted to say that I love that you made some new drawings for your character. It’s really nice to see you improving your work!
Thanks Finn! It felt like time for an update, the hardest part is figuring out what other poses I want / need that can be shown in a creative way! :)
We could simply say canonically that all the cut creatures are just "Extinct" but still it would've been cool to see these ingame
Hello, Below Zero beta tester here! Back when it was in development, polls were held to determine what creatures would make it into the game. The piece of concept art most people use with the ice dragon is no the art they went with when asking the community for feedback. The actual art used didn’t fit subnautica’s style and had a far more fantasy look. Thus, the community voted to not put it in the game. I hope this trivia helps!
Wow I really appreciate you fitting all 17 creatures in one 10 minute video. Intresting, well paced and to the point. Nice work!
Thanks Mateusz!
Blud tried to kill a Fish underwater with a flamethrower 💀 (Love your content keep it going)
Thanks Filip!
Subnautica was a game where you look at the world and go, 'Yeah nah fuck that'. Then you coop in your base cause you rather not go in the Darkness with whatever roaring.
And then you look at Below Zero and go, 'Not this again.'
One was terrorizing. The other is agonizing.
some of this cut content is really a shame that we didnt get it. :(
I especially would have loved to see the Crested Reaper, maybe next time eh!
I bet my mother is one of them
Oof! xD
i love the gardenener eel so much
but can it survive the bioreactor 😇
Is this the new version of will it blend? xD
@@iAletho will it bioreactor?
I honestly would've loved to see the Rotnest, it would add a fun unique challenge, plus seeing all the infected variations would be cool as well, maybe even after getting infected you had to get a cure, otherwise the game would mess with your movement or sight or something of that nature.
i like how in multiple parts of the video he pulls out a shotgun
Been waiting for a video on the cut creatures
Well here it is just for you!
its cool how they reused the sea monkey concept art into different animals in the game e.g triops and trivalve
I feel like creature variety is something below zero struggles with so these would have been cool to see
the kitewing could be a kind of boss fight where you in a empty flat space where you need to avoid it and memerize its patterns and if you successfully pass it and get in into a type of new biome it could trigger a cool lil fight with the ice worm and the kitewing is killed
I thought I knew a lot of subnautica cut conetent but Damm a lot of these would be really cool in game also I’m being stalked by a cuddlefish in attack mode so gotta go
That cuddle fish is right on your tail misterglo!
@@iAletho I gotta make the Neptune rocket quick let’s hope it needs air to survive
I actually got to talk to Alex Ries over email for a speculative biology project of mine when I was in school. It was a short conversation and I had asked him for advice when it came to creature design. He pointed me to a tutorial he made, and it was fantastic!
These videos are amazing!
Cheers Woidon!
The Kitewing Skyray would have been perfect for the Tundra Void north of the Arctic Spires. The flat, barren landscape seems like an ideal environment to leave you exposed for some massive airborne creature to swoop in and kill you.
It would also be hilarious because you would not expect skyrays-which are completely harmless-to have such dangerous larger cousins.
Photosynthesis is extremely rare in animals. I only know of one species of slug that does some photosynthesis. The issue with photosynthesis and cold environments, is that it'd be almost impossible for a creature to produce enough heat AND enough energy to produce the required heat through the sugars from photosynthesis.
Got your comment in eventually Mathijs! :P
If its an option, life will find a way lol
Surprisingly, some of the designs for the sea monkey was actually used for some of the smaller sea life in the second one with one of them being the special eggs you can find in the game
wow the ice dragon is so pretty !! i love the grays !! i also love the cut sea monkey designs !!i like those ones more, as the ones we ended up with look too normal imo, though i still love them :3
oh and i also noticed the first concept art of the sea monkey you showed looks almost exactly like the trivalve !!
I’m always a sucker for giant scary creatures. Still really cool to learn about them.
New animations I see, very nice
the kite wing sky ray is sooo cuteeee
2:03 I’m imagining ginormous alpha gardener eels big enough to hold the in-game thermal lilies
Hi Aletho! I know am really late, but thank you for covering the Ice dragon. Don't know if you remember me, but I asked you to check out the ice dragon back in your "ventgarden" video. So thank you for covering it!
Glad you think it was worth the wait Gigaknight! :)
Here I will state a couple of the creatures here that made it into the game but went through some changes.
5:09 two of these designs made it as other creatures but lost the abilities. Trivalves as a non-breedable pet and triops found in the deep twisty bridges and a couple other places. Triops are small enough to grab from the wild and if you want one it’s better to run into them by chance than go out looking for them, Spikey traps and rarely squidsharks lurk in its habitat and it’s a sparse creature anyway.
5:19 this creature went through major changes but I see resemblance to the noot fish. Noot fish are harmless but will devour anything they can eat whole. Big enough to eat a peeper but small enough to hold.
10:08 no trace of the ice dragon is left in the brinewing but it’s ability, to freeze prey. If you see titan holefish or symbiotes brinewing could be near. (Symbiotes are more parasite though)
I really think having the ice dragon in below zero would’ve made people like the game a lot more. Below zero only had two hostile underwater leviathans, only one of which was a regular threat with the shadow leviathan only appearing in the end game. Having the cue dragon be like the ghost leviathans would’ve made exploring sector zero a lot scarier, especially the under the circumstances sections that are easy to get lost and trapped in
The crested reaper looks like it's holding a rifle with its mandibles closed
The rot nest is legit the flood from halo
Awww look how cute the ice dragon is,would definitely make a good pet😃👍
It looks like it would make a good plushie!
@@iAletho damn now I want one
Cut content still makes for great starting points to jump-start future franchise sequels.
excited for the next game
I honestly hope they add something similar to a horseshoe crab in Subnautica 3 if there is land which would do nothing other than be cool.
Its got to be the crested reaper for me. The idea of a smaller relative to the reaper that hunts in pods and could knock you off an ice sheet sounds awesome.
I want the ice reefback, that or the ice dragon, maybe its breath could freeze you, or lower your temperature dramatically!
I would pick the ice dragon. We could use more leviathans in below zero.
Agree with this one, BZ had to few leviathans in my opinion!
Exactly. How many does it have? Like 3?
@@BabyNebulob Chelicerate, Shadow, Ice worm, Vent garden, Glow whale, and frozen leviathan, only if that counts
@@Gracefulwarrior2124 Well i would count the frozen Levithan, but that's lot more then I thought
The Rotnest reminds me of the Flood from Halo
I feel like discovering, studying, and dealing with the Rotnest parasite could be the plot of an entire game.
There’s always the chance they could return in a future game. The rock punchers in below zero were originally meant to be in the original game and yet they made it into below zero years later
I would love him to do an episode on cut submarines like the Atlas
The ice dragon would've been such a good idea
Pls shadow leviathan been waiting for 2 months its my favorite hostile
It's coming very soon!
I think they should of added the article reaper and the dragon in that would of been so cool
Ranging from cute and innocent
The creature: ❤️❤️🌚🧛🏿♀️🥷🏿❤️❤️
To downright horrifying
The creature: 😱😱😱😱😱🐿️🐀🦔🦫🦦💥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A lot of the sea monkey designs were reworked into several other fish
Man, this makes me remember the sandworm. Would have been cool.
Aletho should make a video on the crabsquid
OK OK SO LET ME NERD REAL QUICK
ok so it seems like the gardener eel's main thing was that it could photosynthesis, and while yes that does seem freaky, so it makes it seem alien, there is an actual sea creature that can do photosynthesis, and you might have already heard about it. It's called Leaf Sheep, and it uses algae to photosynthesize! it does this by grazing algae and then keeps the retained chloroplasts.
I remember when i played below zero after finishing subnautica 1. I got to the end of the game and thought wait thats it? No more secret in the ocean ,no more new leviathans.
The problem with below zero is that you never feal like you discovered something. Alan already tells you were everything is and the map is just way to small, it feels more like a small bay than an actual ocean.
I think they should have given us more leviathans because you start not get scared of the chilliserit very quickly and the shadow leviathan only appears at the end of the game. I remember in the original subnautica being afraid to explore the vast ocean because of the many horrible seamonsters that i could bump into, i never had that same feeling in below zero because of the small ocean size and the lack of actually threatening leviathans. You can also go in to the void way to easily in below zero when compared to how hard it is to do in the original subnauticas vast ocean.
I have no problem with the idea of more land sections but there are some issues. Snow stalkers become less threatening and ice worms are to slow for prawnsuits, i would have like to have seen more land fauna be it hostile or not to make the land feal more varied. A nother problem is that there are basically no large landmarks to help your navigation, i got lost so many times because everything looked the same. In the first game you had the aurora with its distinctive shape to help keep track of were you are, of course it dosint mean we need a structure that larege but just something large enough to be visible for vast distances in the area.
Below zero could have fix some problems by giving you a larger ocean with deep dark cold waters to explore, maby they could have added ice caverns to be below zeros own lost river. Lastly they should have added the icedragon for those types of areas so you dont just cruse around mindlessly in your seatruck without creeping a watchful eye for big leviathans i the area.
I would not add any of them like WHAAAAA YOU THINK I WANT EVEN MORE PTSD FROM THAT GAME?! LIKE WHAAAAAA- I'm scared
As scared as I would've been to play the game, I would've loved to see the Ice Dragon in action!
that crabsquid we saw is called the pygmy crabsquid
I would really like a submautica mod in which all of the rejected creatures exist
i want to see these all in subnautica 3
Lets make it happen Unknown Worlds!
Imagine a version of Subnautica with a biger world and all the cut creatures.
I kinda wish a lot of these animals remained in game, it would have made the world feel a lot more alive
I would have loved to see the original reaper
I think one of the issues with Below Zero's creatures is that they went with all of the "safest" designs. Instead of trying to make something that actually looked unique and alien, they just followed the usual tropes, things that people already are familiar with and like.
I think the best example of this is the glow whale. Its literally just an alien interpretation of a whale. That's it. Same with the ice worm, it's just yet another sandworm type monster.
I don't think that either of those designs are necessarily bad, it's just that original subnautica had so many unique creatures with cool biology, and below zero just falls flat in comparison
I think good way to bring back some of these designs could be a third game, maybe one set on and around a semi tropical island that could like the subnautica Skull Island (specifically a Subnautica equivalent to Peter Jackson’s Skull Island)
I wish they implemented the Ice Dragon
Then we could have had Sea Dragon vs Ice Dragon battles!
The Ice Dragon sounded like such a cool and interesting idea. Especially if it was in Below Zero.
Really makes me wonder what could have been.
The rotnest is horrifying.
I'M SO MAD THEY CUT SOMETHING LIKE THE DEEP ARCTIC FROM THE GAME!!! Just imagine a huge, expansive biome full of water and oversized glaciers to give you a scale of how tiny you really are, lost within the emptiness of that biome, far away from base. Then imagine that ice dragon rise out of the depths to get you! Such a missed potential
I love you videos dude
Thanks Gideon!
Bro subnatica was gonna use the sand bobbit/striker worm as a subnatica creature, the bobbit worm is a kind of underwater worm that can eat ANYTHING and is over ten meters long, one time it was found isndie an aquarium after the employees and visitors started noticing the fish and other animals going missing, they cleaned it and found the culprit, A FLIPPING TWENTY METER LONG SAND STRUKER WAS FOUND…
The ice dragon is HUGE
Honestly almost all of these cut content creatures are alot better then most of sub zeros content lmao
Joking aside many of them feel alot more fitting then some stuff we got
The SeaMonkey original designs especially
Rotnests can basically make Brute Sharks into Metal Gear REXs. Think about it: they already have the mugshot of REX, what with the heavyset jaw and whatnot. And the Rotnests basically allow it to have the signature anti-tank missiles.
Dang, I always felt like the biology and the fauna of Subnautica could've been cooler.
You get sick of seeing the same creatures over and over, you know? I'd expected more creatures in an alien ocean than what we got
I really hope we get something like the de-extinction mod but for below zero cause I need that ice dragon in my life
