yes, exactly my goals too. here on the OBX of NC, we get a lot of side onshore NE wind, and we have miles of coastline to DW. We've done lots and lots and lots on kite, and wing too, but yeah, the wing just drives me crazy once on a good swell. The trick here on non-small days will be getting out thru the break. Most likely will need to have it packed up tight, like really good, and then belly paddle out (and take a minor beating).
Great run of videos mate! 🤙 Definitely will be following along to your parawing journey. So far I've held off SUP DW because I can't fathom the idea of being stuck in a car in Sydney each lap. So I'm making do with some pretty fun upwind about 4km out/downwind runs with the wing and surfing the bumps the length of the bay, 1 run plus some waves along the way back and we're physically pretty done. If the parawing can efficiently get me upwind as if not more so than the wing, plus being able to stash it away on the DW leg, then I'm all in!
Welcome to the new Realm of Parawinging....when you actually get to do it. It's a gamechanger (I know you like that term :) haha! It'll take a bit learning the technique but once you get it, it's insane for downwinders. Couple things that's happened to me is: I can't find my paddle anymore haha! I can ride a mid length easily on a run which is way more surfy then a big sup. And you don't get smoked/tired trying to get up on sup. Plus being able to put it away is just beautiful. Reach out if you have any questions. Yeew!!
Great intro video Dave. I’m still on the fence with Parawings. Currently enjoying riding fast on the small foils under 500cm2 on the wing. Not sure I could do this with a parawing. Flow wing looks great.
Looking forward to hearing your experiences on board size! We started on our SUPs but quickly found that midlengths felt much better on the take-off with the parawings. Something to do with the longer length feeling super awkward when tracking across the bumps rather than with. I'm close to your weight (~90) and I found the 980s with my 65L 5'6 felt great.
@@alonbrasingtonsounds perfect! I tried to go to narrow with 18” wide rounded bottom mid length. It’s a great board for wing light wind but feels impossible to start with the pw. Flatter bottoms in the 21-19 wide range with volume in the neutral to simi sinker range seem to be best. Some length, 6ft or less is probably ideal. Long enough to start early but not so long to get tangled in the bridles during the start.
Oh now thats very interesting!!! I'd love to end up on a shorter board of. I actually just sold my 6'2 Sultan Wing.....Maybe that was a mistake :) I might get a 6ft Cypher made for it. How windy is it normally for you?
@@davewestfoils Hood was where I spent the time on the BRM! Some 15kt days, and then 25kt days. Obviously much shorter period bumps, so maybe in Oz coastal runs the longer period won't mess with the board tracking much!
Yes, Dave! Good one. These are my thoughts exactly. And in addition you can do this with a smaller board than a long DW board. That will open up the possibility for a lot more riders. This how I see it! I am at this moment trying to decide which para wing to get? Why did you get the D-flow instead of others?
So I never downwinded just prone and shorerunners. I have 3 Dwings on their way. I am just glassing a 6'4x19x5 90ltr to learn on as everyone said shorter is better (I have a 8'4 I made if I need it) I think I will be on a 65ltr when I learn it Im 85 kg. Either that or I wasted a few meters or carbon and a gallon of epoxy lol.
Its fun but needs to be powered up. The Dwing handles being overpowered well and cruises upwind. Im struggling to find the right board for the east coast lighter strength winds. I think a 6 foot and 23 eggy shape around 100lts. Its a different take off to paddling or winging - the kite pulls you downwind and you pump up the board bit like a prone take off. if theres plenty wind you can easily waterstart like the kitefoilers do - pop straight up onto foil
If the parawing becomes as efficient to go upwing as a wing, even in light conditions, I will consider switch from deflate downwinder to "parawing pack" downwinder. I'm sure we could also attach the paddle to the parawing handle. I think I would still want to use my paddle for the downwind part. I like paddling too much now!
Yeah I think a paddle on your back or something will be a nice back up. I also like paddling up and the parawing is so light that if you just took it out and stuck it in it's bag you wouldn't even notice it for the paddle up.

Yeah I'm hoping to do some solid upwinders with a harness to test how that is. Sydney is a shocker for car shuffles so makes heaps of sense for you.

What about using parawing to surf waves instead of a wing?
@@apricotscrub Totally doable and some guys are doing it. Right conditions with good technique it’s on!

Looks fun tool for getting a nice angle for those onshore winds, stoked to try the ozone one
i've been wondering if/when ozone would launch one

What the width on your 65l?
@@CFL_Foiler It's 19.5 wide. A wing board I had made for the surf. Slightly scooped deck so it feels great to pressure toes and heels on carves.

The Flow seemed to ly the best from @foilrat s testing and still went up wind well.
Yewww the journey begins! 🙌
It's your fault. ;)

Sweet Thanks Tom. Seems that I'll end up on a shorter board.
I was thinking these would work on a small prone board. Say a 32L. Has anyone tried this? Is there enough power in a parawing to do this?

Thats unfortunate. The harness can help.
