  • In this episode of Legacy of Lupin, we dive into the cartoonish, colorful, and divisive Lupin the Third Part 3. With the cancellation of Lupin VIII, TMS partnered up with Yomiuri TV again to release another Lupin TV show. With Lupin donning a pink jacket this time, it was very colorful and very 80s. Today it's sometimes dismissed or ridiculed as being too silly, too dated, too poorly animated, and not as "cool" as the other Lupin projects. Is that reputation deserved, or is Part 3 due for a re-evaluation? Let's find out. #LupinIII #LupinTheThird #LupinThe3rd

As someone who's nearing the end of my Lupin journey, having watched most of the series, I really loved how Part 3 stood out among it all, and it was the sole reason I've decided Zenigata is my favorite. I've been constantly on the lookout for badass Zenigata moments and I feel like he somehow managed to hit a high note here. Among his usual sniffing out talents, this man was capable of snapping gold bars in half, running at high speeds while carrying both Lupin & a wooden cross on top of him, and jump from car-to-car to catch up to the Lupin gang. I'm sure it was because of the loonier nature of the show that gave Zenigata these strengths, but I hope with the few remaining episodes I have, Zenigata is able to show an ounce of what he showed in this part.

Can we PLEASE get a dub of all of these like.... While the cast of part two is like .. still alive? 🥺

From my understanding, Discotek does not have the resources and money to dub a series that is longer than 25-ish episodes. As such, I doubt Part 2 or Part 3 will ever be dubbed (or redubbed for the Part 2 episodes that was haphazard). Plus, the vast majority who already bought the BD of Part 3 would not be willing to double dip for an English dub of it.

Boy do I disagree about the soundtrack. It's very much Yuji Ohno music while also being pretty unique for his style, and I find myself listening to Sexy Adventure all the time.
I found your channel today and I'm really enjoying this Lupin retrospective, both in the moments that had me nodding and yelling "exactly!!" and the ones that I don't agree with as much. Looking forward to the future videos!

I actually really REALLY love the first half of the Part 3 designs. It looks almost like an Italian Fumetto of the period and Sexy Adventure is my FAVOURITE intro song. The back half of part 3... Uh... My heart goes out to the fact that I KNOW they were trying to get a look closer to Monkey Punch and his original manga, but Monkey Punch's designs were genuinely all over the freaking map. I owned a few of the Lupin manga back in the day and consistency was NEVER in his style. The Woman Called Fujiko Mine at least got the insane stylistic aesthetic right, though we're getting ahead of ourselves.
It's such a shame that the subbed versions I could find back in the day had the absolute worst overlap where Lupin would have a conversation and Jigen would answer and it'd just be the one subtitle so it got confusing.
    LOVE the video man!

@@ricardocantoral7672 Huh, cool point with the German expressionism and I can totally see what you mean! I always thought it was closer to the sort of Sergio Aragonés period of Monkey Punch's style. I think a good balance between the two was the Lupin pilot film that they did where it's still anime-esque but the western cartoony influence is REALLY evident in Lupin, Jigen (where we get to see his eyes) and Zenigata. Though I can totally see what you mean about the differences between both styles of Part 3

I know that a lot of people diss on it because of the bright pastel colors or goofy art style, but part 3 is my favorite TV adaptation of Lupin the Third. I personally love the pastels because they match the fashion of the 1980s. The theme song “Sexy Adventure” in my opinion is the best Lupin theme song. In fact, my profile picture is Zenigata from part 3 eating a sandwich, and I even dressed up as Lupin in his pink jacket for Halloween last year. @@CloudConnectionA dark and gothic version of Lupin the Third would be better. A cool and heroic, but also dark Lupin the Third would be better.
In the style of Tim Burton we would get a better Lupin and his gang. In the style of Tim Burton and Lupin the Third Part 1.
Not this pink bullshit. This cartoonish look looks better by Hanna-Barbera, not here.
Why Fujiko looks like Daphne Blake from The Scooby-Doo Show there?
And why Lupin looks like a imbecile there? And why she looks older than Lupin there?
Part 1, Part 4 and 5 are the best versions of Lupin the Third, at my opinion...

Great review, I hate that many fans completely jump over Part 3. Although it's considered the weakest part (for me that would be Part 6 but that's a story for another time) I really don't think fans should skip it. It never reaches the heights of Part 2 but it also never reaches its lowest lows either. I think unlike Part 2 where episodes can range from best in the franchise to worst in the franchise, the majority of Part 3 episodes are just good. It's a real shame that they didn't stick with the initial manga inspired designs, which are personally some of my favorites in any series, cause the goofy lookin designs of the latter half make people think the animation is bad, when in fact it's significantly better than Part 2s. I also hate that this show is stigmatized as being the wackiest while Part 2 is overall more wacky and childish. I keep maintaining that if Part 3 had a hammed up dub similar to that of Part 2 it would be just as popular, if not more. Lastly although as you mention Jigen and Goemon are unfortunately a lot more passive than in Part 2, Fujiko is a huge step up. In Part 2 Fujiko was genuinely bipolar and she could range from actively wanting to kill Lupin to almost killing herself to be with him in the afterlife. In Part 3 not only is she less of a damsel in distress but she's also a LOT more stable as a character, with her betraying Lupin but always making sure he doesn't die and proving that she really loves him.

This was my introduction to the franchise as when the satellite dish boom hit Egypt in the late 90s, I used to scroll channels to watch whatever shows, movies or cartoons I wanted to see even if it was in a language I didn't understand. One of those instances was when I stumbled across Italian channels and an Italian dub of Lupin III Part 3 was airing on one of those channels, the channel also aired dubbed episodes of Part 1 and 2.
While I didn't understand Italian, that didn't stop me from becoming a Lupin fan.

I say episode 18 is worth watching purely for the song that gets used. It's called Darkest Eyes, performed by singer Cathi Linn, and it is an absolute BANGER

My biggest issue with part 3 (or atleast what I know of it from the part 3 movie) is some of the background character designs are very, dated, a lot of racial stereotypes that have aged horrifically

The family is currently working our way through Pink Jacket on the blu-ray, and it's been way more of a blast than I'd feared. I've even been tempted to call it my favorite of the Lupin TV series, though I'm currently leaning more towards "even the worst Lupin is still pretty dang good". Don't let this one's reputation scare you off! It's definitely looser and more overtly cartoonish than the rest of the series, but the episodes are shockingly densely written (whenever we reach a commercial, I'm thinking "wow, that's the halfway mark"?) and it manages to integrate humor, serious drama, and heists together with better regularity than Red Jacket did. Besides the episodes listed in the video, "Manhattan Crisis" is probably the hardest we've ever laughed at a Lupin episode, despite the really painful stereotypes, "A Cocktail Named Desire" is a good noir-style "serious" episode, and "Play a Joke on the Variation"... really has to be seen to be believed, I'm not going to say it's good, but it is an absolute fever dream and way more compelling than it should be, in a sort of Lupin-by-way-of-Lynch sort of way. Now, full disclosure I'm an easy mark, we watched through the entirety of Part 2 and I could count the number of episodes I thought were outright bad on one hand (Part 3 is currently standing at one episode), but I feel that if you've got strong Lupin sea legs and can take a lot of silliness, some tonal whiplash, and not get hung up on the art style, Part 3 is absolutely worth seeing. Despite the time gap, it's the missing link between part 2 and Part 4, and combines the strengths and weaknesses of both into something definitely it's own.

  • @Gackt4awesome

Part 3's issues directly come from the lower quality animation in the back half, the fact that the reactions got overly silly and just lack of cohesion that even Part 2 still sort of had.
Also, the locations are in either Los Angeles or New York most of the time.

Correction. The photo you have for Junichi Iioka is actually film famous director Seijun Suzuki. Suzuki is known as a contributor to Lupin, specifically Legend of the Gold of Babylon. He is mis-credited as director but was involved in the plotting. And consulted on the third season.

Idk where the goofy rep came from when Part 2 exists. The early half of P3 is honestly very grounded, more akin to P1. The art style and some plots went insane later on, Gold of Babylon is insanity, but for the most part P2 is easily the goofiness (did everyone forget an early episode had Nese appear from Lochness?)

Part 3 rules. It’s total cartoon glory and I’m glad they junked that stiff style they had early on. They went full crazy in the later parts and I just don’t get why people hate commitment and vision like that. I also loved the crowd shots where they snuck in Easter eggs. Part 2 is the most popular and favorite and if a Lupin isn’t like that (like part 1 and part 3) some people act like it “isn’t like Lupin” which is such a weird limitation.

Well Lupin the 3rd: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine was the first, and by far only as of now, Lupin the 3rd anime to be directed and written by women, Sayo Yamamoto and Mari Okada being the prime examples of this. Takeshi Koike served as the character designer and I think animation director for the series and replaced Yamamoto as the director for the films that follow after it and Yuya Takahashi replaced Okada as the script writer for those films. At least that's what I heard and read about.

I'm kind of weary about this series because the 50 episode run just seems daunting to me. Yes, I know Part 2 is 155 episodes, but that one isn't out on Blu-Ray whereas this one is. 😛 I say that because I rarely ever have motivation to watch a series I don't physically own unless it's Tokusatsu (since those usually aren't available in the US to begin with).
I don't know. Maybe it's because I have heard a lot of negativity towards the show, but I just ordered Parts IV and V and some movies from Rightstuf through their current Discotek sale whereas I'm passing on this one for now. I figure since I can't watch them all in order anyway I might as well check out the modern ones first. In fact, my wife and I just finished Part 1 about two hours ago. Damn that was a truly great show.
Anyway, I will say that your review has given me some things to look forward to when I eventually do tackle it, so great job there.
One final thing, how many movies are there and is there a place I could go to that lists them all in order? I've tried looking online, but the sites I found said there are only 11 movies despite Rightstuf having like 25 movies listed.

In addition to movies that actually played in theaters, there's a ton of movie-length Lupin TV specials beginning in 1989 and occurring once a year until 2013, then sporadically afterwards. I don't know a place that has them all combined and in order off the top of my head, but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.
