Fun fact: When TMS was working on Lupin The Third Part Three, they were also working on cartoons that were aired in the United States like Inspector Gadget and Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats. But only their first seasons though.
Inspector Gadget I knew was originally going to be a Lupin series, "Lupin the 8th", but there a copyright dispute erupted out of Leblanc's estate in France, which ultimately resulted in the show changing all the characters. Inspector Gadget was born out of that mess haha
One thing about accessibility: The entirety of Lupin III is only available in Netflix Japan. For Asians outside of Japan, a bit of the series is somewhat accessible through Bilibili. Or, well, yeah, then you have the… unsaid alternatives. :D
The last alternative is what most anime fans are used to. Honestly nobody buys anime unless its cheap. Japan has overpriced it for a long time. The good news is most of japan doesn't care what goes on outside its border due to being isolationist but in an age of broadband internet speed what did you expect to happen? Broke american teenagers and colege student are used to being broke and not paying for anything so why stop at anime? I am just saying what most don't want to say because they fear the thought police. Majority of anime fans got into it from pirated stuff they got from clubs in the old days and this tradition of not paying for it will continue long after we are dead.
@@UToobUsername01 Also blame U.S. companies that put three or four eps on a disc when 8 could fit and then charge $30 for it, making a complete series cost hundreds of dollar. I used to wait for the $19.99 complete series box sets to come out a year after the final disc of a show was released. I remember buying Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny that way.
I got into Lupin after watching the Lupin vs Conan TV Special back in 2009 and I have been a Lupin fan ever since. I was originally into Detective Conan at the time and got attached to Lupin once those two had a crossover
Oh wow, that's cool! I saw that crossover very late in my Lupin-marathon. I still gotta read/watch Detective Conan, it sounds like a great timeless story (kinda like Lupin!)
@@SNKJayI'm the opposite, got into Conan first and am now looking into how to watch Lupin. It definitely is a fantastic show, though I have to recommend the Magic Kaito manga before everything else.
All you need to know is that Lupin, he's a nice man (around 60% of the time give or take). Either way, a fantastic breakdown for people wanting to get in but don't know where to start. Good to have you back, keep up the great work, and have a lovely day.
Thank you! Yeah, in a world of inter-connected stories and excessive background story you gotta know, it's nice to be able to pick something up easily. You too have a lovely day!
I finished this anime like 2 months ago and I was looking for a good video about Lupin III and I found yours. Thanks for the time you spend making this video, I love it👍🏻
I star with a myzaki marathon and watched castle of cagliostro and the characters were so awesome I wanted to go on more adventures with them…. Little do I know 6 series and 40 years of movies later we still on this wild rollercoaster ride
@@SNKJay I think there should be a GTA style game made with this license. Are you familiar with the Yakuza series by Sega? I think a cartoony anime equivalent to Yakuza could be done but using the Lupin license. (yakuza also balance series things with humor)
I love Fujiko so much. After all these years, she's still portrayed as the sexy, seductive femme fatale style character who isn't afraid to use her sexuality and feminine wiles to get what she wants. Or she'll blast her way through the scene before one upping Lupin and getting away with the treasure once again. Her character, like much of the rest of the cast has retained her nature and essence since pretty much the first series. It's a breath of fresh air to have a character still portrayed as sexy and feminine as opposed to trying to QUOTE UNQUOTE modernize and empower her by basically turning her into a man. The same can be said about the rest of the cast as well. Lupin's interpretations can shift slightly between the different shows, but you always get a sense that he's loving what he's doing and he's 4 steps ahead. Jigen is still the same rough and tumble reliable best friend, and Goemon is still the old fashioned Samurai. The shows are just so good no matter if you're getting the goofier stories or the deadly serious Lupin the IIIrd iterations. Which by the way are some of the best version of those characters. If you want some really badass version of these characters make sure to watch the Lupin the IIIrd movies.
NOBODY talks about this but the Omar Sy Lupin Netflix show DOES have a reference to the anime, at the end one of the seasons, they leave in a yellow Fiat 500, and Lupins friend is a little bit dressed like Jigen
I watched Lupin the 3rd since I was a kid. My auntie always comes back from Japan with weird cartoons recorded in VHS tapes. That’s when I was introduced to the whole animé scene. There were Voltes V, Dragonball, etc and the best of them all was Lupin the 3rd. The jazz intro song was way ahead of its time. We didn’t need subtitles back then coz the animation of the series is so comprehensive. Good old days! :-)
I just wanted to say that after watching this, I STILL don't know where to start because it all looks appealing! Your video was very detailed and fun to watch! Thanks for putting this together!
A rather interesting viewing order for beginners here. I, personally would want to show people a balanced take on Lupin first. I only watched a handful of TV specials but I think Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid is up there, and maybe Episode 0: First Contact. They both have this nice blend of coolness and goofiness. I think what the two also have in common is how they show the character dynamics and their skill sets really well. And I think all the characters have something to do. And then (pretty controversial choice, I guess), jump into Part 5. Most of the main story arcs are good and the standalone episodes could give new viewers an idea what to expect from other Lupin media. Also welcome back, Jay. Glad you're posting videos again 👍
Ooh, Blood Seal is wonderful! I totally forgot about that when making this video, haha my bad XD Episode 0 I'm a little iffy on, although it does have some nice goofiness. I was more concerned with how someone would approach the shows. Jumping to Part 5 would be doable tbh, there aren't many things that carry from Part 4, and if they do they're hardly necessary to understand. I always found Part 2 to be a great place to attract the most people, it's what got me into the shows at least. Yeah, thanks! I intend to make more stuff, got the time now so I'm good :D
A few months ago I wanted to start this anime, and your video helped me to get interested in the show, first of all this is an older show that has a lot of parts, but your video and analysis helped me how to start, and since this show has a lot of fan service it affected my viewing a bit in the end. And since I like to watch Eng DUB, and only if it's satisfactory, which means that if the characters are still the same as in the original, and if the voice actor performances are good enough, that's why I didn't watch a couple of movies because they didn't seem interesting to me and they weren't dubbed, so this is my order of how I watched this anime: Lupine III THE GREEN SUIT (first 23 episodes and two movies). Lupine III THE RED SUIT (I was a little disappointed that this season wasn't fully dubbed, but I still watched everything in order, all 155 episodes and 13 movies with the red suit, and I watch the movies in the order of the year they came out, and in the order of the color of the suit, which means I don't watch other movies who do not have the same suit color as the season I finished). Lupine III THE PINK SUIT (This series is not dubbed, but I decided to watch all 50 episodes, and that's only because of the 2 movies in which have a pink suit and were dubbed, otherwise I would have skipped the pink suit). Lupine III THE BLUE SUIT (I watched this in the order that the seasons came out, two seasons with the blue suit, and the last one with the green one, which still follows the story of the last two, so I decided to combine them, and I think there is a special when Lupin travels through time with a car, and that happen during these seasons, so I also included it in this calculation, that would be 74 episodes and the movies, which are more like 2 part episodes, the storys that focus on Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko, I called them movies, but they are still 6 episodes that together make 3 movies). Lupine III THE CGI MOVIE (I separated this LUPIN THE FIRST 2019 movie from everyone, because it's the only time these characters have been shown in this kind of animation, so I didn't think I should put it with for example the red suit movies, but here near the end of this journey). MINE FUJIKO TO IU ONNA (I saved this for last, because of your good description, and I respect a good fan service, so I left this for last, and it turns out that the events of this take place before the main characters met, and that it can be watched before all the shows almost perfectly and easily to continue with Lupine III THE GREEN SUIT his 23 episodes onwards). In conclusion, I realized that the stories from all these series and movies can be CANON, with minor problems in the details, but that all the things happened, just maybe not in all the details, but that the characters stick to their behavior and events in different seasons and movies, depending on what suit Lupin wears, since in the seasons we have mentions and appearances of characters from the movies, and places from the movies that did not appear in the shows, and because of the special where Lupin travels through time and almost loses his friends, but in the end manages to restore everything. I watched this like a marathon, and I took a break when I finished with the red suit, and then I continued and I didn't skip anything, because I'm like that, if I tell someone that I've watched an anime, it means that I've watched everything that anime has to offer, and that I can talk about it comfortably, but it was not easy to browse all episodes and movies from this anime giant, but thanks to your video I was able to watch the series properly, by making my own way of watching. Thank you very much for everything, you prepared me for this anime show properly.
This video is fantastic!! I love the Lupin III series and I am LIVING for all these videos on youtube about him! From the funny "out of context" clips from the shows, to the history behind the series and the creative minds behind the scenes, to the media analysis of the shows/movies and what they mean thematically and character-wise, and now these kinds of videos explaining how to navigate the series for newcomers. You did a fantastic job explaining the history of the series, explaining who the characters are, and explaining how each series has its own tone and target audience. I really appreciate that you covered the nuance behind the jacket colors and how the colors are meant to represent a different type of Lupin character instead of a defined point in time on a timeline. Sometimes the colors are used to portray a younger or older Lupin, but not always and I like that you explained that. Also the editing in this video was top notch! I imagine it took a great deal of time to put this together. Thank you for making this video and spreading the love of this series to people who might be interested ❤
I'll sum it up way easier since it can be done in like 1 minute. If you want to get into lupin you can consider this: The 1st three parts are completely episodic, and there's not much tonal difference outside of Part 1 being a little grittier. If you want to watch beyond part 3 you're getting parts that have no continuity to anything except themselves while trying to somewhat establish continuity.. If you think of everything having no continuity to a point it's very easy to not overthink it. Part 4,5,6 can have a story of their own, but they can jump back and forth to red jacket, green jacket and pink jacket without much of a thought. As for the movies? they have no relation to the series outside of being influenced on what was being made at the time(Mamo coming out early in Part 2's run, and Cagliostro coming out towards the end when Lupin was established the way he was by Miyazaki). And the specials? They're all one offs, entirely their own thing. The Fujiko series and it's sequel films? all self contained in it's own continuity and being way grittier as it's closer to the manga? And the Manga? gritty, full of death and craziness, and not reflective of the modern anime characterization of Lupin. Long story short you can start anywhere really for part 1-3, the specials, and mamo and calgiostro. But if you want a basic idea of who these characters are it's best to watch a few episodes of part 1, part 2 or part 3.
i stumbled into you while browsing the lupin ops for something else and i found myself really sucked into these lupin vids its so much info in such a digestible and entertaining way i think you just created a new lupin fan thank u
Funny you mention that episode in Part 4. It's definitely a callback to a Part 1 episode where Lupin got locked up, and def one of my fav Lupin episodes. Takeshi Koike is phenomenal, it's a shame his work is underrated
Oh wow, you're right! I didn't even think of mentioning that -- and they're there with ads and all, but that's still a very easy way to watch them. I own a lot of them physically so that's how I got around. That's cool Tubi's got so many!
Tbf, the core reason Lupin isn't up there with the other big Shonen anime, is mainly down to the fact that the show is designed purely with adults in mind and has a realistic setting (besides some of the goofy traps in the franchise that don't make sense). The shonen anime for as long as I can remember, has been largely dominated by shows aimed at both kids/teens, and feature characters with wholesome journeys or journeys that involve massive fantasy/sci fi battles with power levels that scale each week. With a show like Lupin, you don't get power levels or trips to other worlds or dimensions, you just get people with guns and sharp wits about them in tough situations, and that's what I feel works best for Lupin, just not for Shonen anime aimed at teens/kids, who naturally expect bombastic shows and themes (it's also why Golgo 13 never took to the mainstream audience, because it had far more nudity and adult themes going on than even Lupin had). personally, I grew up with Lupin starting with it's chronological order, then watching the movies that released during the each part's respective release years, and so far I've not been overwhelmed by following the anime in it's chronological release order. I wouldn't exactly suggest anyone new follow that route though, since some folks may be put off by the early Lupin 3rd styles of Pt 1-3, compared to pt 4-6 (which is more modern and less goofy looking than the older parts). That being said, I'm glad there are still younger folks trying to get into an anime as old as this and greatly appreciate spending your time in making a guide for future fans to dip their toes into, because this franchise really deserves all it's success and appreciation.
I think if Lupin was a character in Dragonball and stole the 7 balls and then wished to become a super saiyan the whole Lupin ratings would soar. Since he is a thief he would make for a good bad guy for Goku.
@@UToobUsername01 I mean there's nothing to say there cannot be a crossover movie, but I wouldn't get Lupin to wish to become a SS and magically shift from thief to fighter, I would think more along the lines of him wishing for more ways to steal things, because the man himself isn't really about wishing for instant riches, he likes the thrill of the heist and the chase.
@@jolean_cujoh Lupin's gotten more friendlier as time has gone on in recent years tbh, compared to the past where he's literally strung up ppl by the neck with wires, or outright killing others via his Walther.
@@dirge7459 Recent years? Not really. I can't really speak on behalf on Parts 4 and 6 since it's been so long since I've watched those, but I will on Part 5 because I watched that a bunch. Lupin killed a bunch of people along with Goemon and Jigen especially in Part 5. The Black Notebook Arc especially was bloody as hell. Go back and re-watch that series, there's a lot quite a lot of kills in there. I will agree however, that after Takahata and Miyazaki came in, they made it more kid-friendly. There's an old video on UA-cam where they had some kind of Lupin fan panel with the voice actors and the audience consists of only children lol. ua-cam.com/video/yRvd185-XAg/v-deo.htmlsi=nZtAIKi_RX83Ii_z It's only really when Takeshi Koike came in and made The Woman Called Fujiko Mine where they try to apply a more adult feel into Lupin.
I'm glad I found this video at this time! I was thinking of getting into Lupin III for some time but was putting it off. But recently I noticed the adds for Castle of Cagliostro getting a release in cinemas in my country in like two weeks, so I wondered if I could watch it without prior knowledge of the shows that came before ^^ Now I am deffinitely buying tickets, time to finally get into this series! ^^ Thank you so much for this video and have an awesome day ^^
I first heard of Lupin the third in a old issue of Wizard Magazine from the late 90's, then about roughly fifteen years ago I rented a older dvd copy of Lupin the third: The Castle Of Cagleostro and absolutely loved that film. A couple of years ago I almost got to see Lupin the third: The first in the theater, though unfortunately the theater I was going to see it in canceled the showing of the film (still have no idea why?).
Thank u for covering this. Many years ago I watched a couple episodes and I didn't like it but envied I bumped into the movers about 3 years ago I binged watched it. Great movies.
No prob! I'll do movies at some point next, although there's no established order you need for that. I'd love to discuss more about the movies, yeah they're great!
This was a fun video. I also got into it by watching the Red Jacket episodes on Adult Swim and I’ve been hooked ever since. I even subscribe to HiDive only for access to parts zero through six.
If you’re lucky, some libraries do have DVDs of movies to borrow, and it’s worth checking to see what they have. That’s how I was able to find Lupin III: The First and other Lupin media. Or there might be a few rare movie rental stores that could have Lupin stuff. Thanks for this guide by the way. This is very helpful
Heh. That FF IX mention was my achievement! lol Glad to see you're back with a new Lupin video. How are you doing? It's a great time to be a Lupin fan actually. They recently released the Fujiko Mine miniseries in German and got the old voice cast from the 90's. And just yesterday they released first half of series 6. It's the first time an entire Lupin series is getting translated into German. Only thing bugging me is the price. Like honestly the Fujiko DVD/Blu ray was like 90$ same for the first half of Series 6. 90$ for 12is episodes is insane ...
After watching the video: I am still 50 episodes shy of finishing Part 2 and haven't seen anything from part 3 yet. But i have seen most of the movies and every other show. In my opinion the first half of the first series is just one detail away from being perfect. They are to happy. It would greatly benefit from a touch of misery. It's to romantic. Lupin has the most loyal friends who'd go to any lengths to help him. He's on top of the world. If he wants to have sex with a girl who's to stop him? definitely not her objections. A touch of "Once upon a Time in America" would be great. Trading the romantics of the heist movies from the 30's with the pitiful men of the 70's and 80's. He kills he rapes. That's the making of a pitiful man. Show him riding the highs but also suffering the deepest lows. In short: Crush the image when it seems that his lifestyle is something to be admired. Part 2 is okay but sometimes even weirder than part 1 with it's magicians and time travelers. I really enjoyed a handful of em but most are just okay-ish. Part 4 is a great start as well as endpoint to a Lupin Journey. To me Zenigata makes or breaks a Lupin show. Every hero benefits from a formidable adversary. Star Wars wouldn't be as great if Darth Vader was a bumbling moron. They enter the scene and you know shit just got real. And Zenigata is on top of his game here. Honestly i think he's even better than Lupin. Lupin has months to plan every move and counter every measure taken to arrest him. Zenigata has to think on his feet to outwit Lupin in the moment. He comes close to and even manages to capture him. In part 4 he isn't just competent. He's the very best chance they have in getting Lupin. Also i just love the end. This is how Lupin should end. SPOILERS: The gang just waiting at a trainstation and with every passing train someone else is just gone. No good bye no see you next time. They just go their seperate ways and might never see each other again. If anyone ever watches just one single selfcontained and concluded show this should be it. Part 5 is a great continuation and should not be watched without part 4. If you liked part 4, you are most likely going to enjoy 5 as well. 6 is another okay show for me. The Sherlok premise could be better integrated and more meaningful. also the Character himself is not living up to his potential. This should historically be his greatest foil. Now here's a weird take: I love the Fujiko Mine series, but hate it's tie-in movies. Koike really did not understand what made the show so amazing. It's dark, adult, noir, violent, but never going to explicit. The movies have a very comon problem. Blood=cool. Blood makes something adult. It does not. If anything it makes something childish. Remember the scene from Jurassic Park where the Rex is eating another Dinosaur? The adult wasn't the one going "WHOA! Look at all the blood!" It was the 12 year old boy. Kids and edgy teenagers think blood is cool and adult. I don't like the Goemon movie and don't even get me started on the giant dildo drill robot. What movie was that in again? Fujiko Mine feels adult without being chep. The nudity isn't as fetishized as in the aforementioned drildo scene. the violence is often more aluded to than celebrated. I really love it. It's also contained and also a great way to start. I think the best entry point is the movie Voyage to Danger. Might be a bit biased because that's how i got introduced to Lupin but try and hear me out: If you start with the very best (As in Castle of Cagliostro) whatever you watch next will be a step down. Also that movie shows a bit of a settled Lupin. He seems more at the end of his personal journey than at the beginning. He doesn't have any ulterior motives for helping the princess. He's just trying to help. Voyage to Danger shows Lupin at the top of his game. He invades an armsdealer on a private island and it has a very bond-esque feeling. Shotshell is a great evil organization and Klotz is a dispicable person. A great spy Thriller. Not the very best but a really good movie and if that is your one and only venture into Lupin fair enough. If not there are some movies a step up. Some a step down and you can go in any direction with quality and character. Whew that was a lot. But hey i just watched a 50 minute video. Of course i had a lot to say ^^
@@Drachenhannes "Crush the image when it seems that his lifestyle is something to be admired." Love that quote, I'll steal that if you don't mind XD. I liked the Woman Called Fujiko tie-in movies, although they are definitely TOO explicit. I see them more as one-offs, taking the characters in different directions we haven't seen before. The giant robot in the Daisuke Jigen movie.... I would never show a clip of that on a youtube video of mine, not without intense censorship haha. Voyage to Danger is a VERY Lupin/80s movie, I love it a lot. The story is well-written, I may make a video JUST on Voyage to Danger in the near future, it's enjoyable. As a kid, I didn't understand it, only now can I say it's well-made. Thanks for watching my near 50 minute vid btw. Means a lot to me, and hey I aim to produce more content soon!
I'm from Germany as well and while it's getting better, the state of Lupin III in Germany is still pretty sad. Not a lot of films are legally available to watch (as most of them never made it to Germany to begin with) and the tv series' are virtually unknown here. But at least it is slowly getting better. Crunchyroll released part six and the spin-off and got the license for part one (which apparently will be available to stream/ buy on DVD and Blu-ray this fall). I hope they are successful enough to warrant bringing more Lupin to Germany, especially Part Two and some of the older tv specials or films.
@@Scamander That's unfortunate to hear. I find Lupin really shining from the tv specials and movies that hardly get much attention. I can only hope someday these things become more accessible. It was strange to think anime could be on Netflix streaming, and yet here we are with Naruto, One Piece, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, etc. I'm sure we'll get an access to the Lupin vault someday. For now, physical media is the only option for tracking these things down (especially "Plot of the Fuma Clan", sheesh so rare)
i had seen the prison of the past movie from 2019 before but i got really in to lupin the 3rd earlier this year i watched everything in like 2-3 months (yes including the cancelled lupin the 8th) from time to time i re-watch some of the movies or specials waiting for a new season or something to happen (i know lupin and jigen make an appearance in the city hunter movie that just came out)
The main character of Lupin the Third is Lupin himself, Mine Fujiko, Jigen Daisuke and Ishikawa Goemon, so if you are looking for a chronological order then you should start with obviously Lupin Zero which is Lupin as a kid and you'll see his first interaction with Jigen. Then, you can watch Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna which will show you how Mine got to know Lupin, Jigen and Goemon. Then after that watch the three sequels which are three movies, Jigen Daisuke no Bohyou, Chikemuri no Ishikawa Goemon and Mine Fujiko no Uso. The rest you can watch it however you like.
I found Lupin when I was watching all ghibli movies in release order. Then I watched all Lupin Movies, parts 4 thru 6, and Goemons blood spray. I have all digital copies. I still need to watch The woman called fujiko Mine. This was a good and easy to understand video. Thank you!
How I got into Lupin was through an AMV I watched stuff in a weird order Woman called Mine Fujiko Jigen's Gravestone Goemons Bloodspray Lupin part 5 Lupin part 4 Cagliostro Lupin III The First
I know for a fact Lupin AMV's (from Goemon's bloodspray especially) were BIG in getting people into Lupin. And hey, that's not a weird viewing order at all! Lupin is timeless, you can see whatever you want. Ideally, if someone were to NEED a kind of order, I figured this video would be for them. So they can rest easy knowing my preferred route.
Ah... I was introduced to Lupin the 3rd back when adult swim was in its infancy and they aired anime every late night. I'd sneak my way to the TV while my dad was fast asleep, just so I can watch an episode from the Part 2 series. I even managed to get the Lupin video game for PS2 from a local game store before GameStop ever showed up in my neighborhood. The rest, as they say, is history, as I enjoyed the new episodes that would air on Toonami in the following years. I even occasionally watch the English dub of movies that appear on UA-cam and/or Hulu. Good times.
Been watching Lupin 3 part 5 and it is pure silliness and fun. Love it. Gonna check out the rest and read the manga because why not? Most movies are on Tubi in the US. Free streaming with ads.
Very informative video my friend 😊 as I have to confess that I'm part of the majority that's recognised the series but always been unsure where to start coz I'm a bit of a continuity freak to whatever franchise I wanna get into.
43:24 Okay, I was with you with all of your movie reccs, except for this one. I will be fully real in that dead or alive just wasn’t really the best. I think that part that especially did it in, was after watching it, watching twilight Gemini, which had a very similar setting and even similar story beats, but the characters were just so much better (imo) to the ones in dead or alive. That being said, I also highly recommend Episode 0: First Encounter, and also Operation Return the Treasure, both were really good, with the former being a more serious movie in tone compared to most movies, and the latter having a good story, and also genuinely having some of my favorite jokes from some of the movies… Except for when they found the word impossible in Napoleon’s dictionary, nothing will ever top that
Honestly, I can't thank you enough for making this video for casual anime folks that want to get to Lupin III franchise. Since early 2000s, like most millennials who watches DBZ, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon, I loved Lupin III part 2 back when it was aired on Adult Swim. I'd enjoy your takes like I'd agree that this franchise is the Scooby Doo in Japan, which is ironically true. Look at the parallels! Lupin Zero = A Pup Named Scooby Doo. Unfortunately, this franchise is so heavily slept on just as much as the Dragon Quest franchise (since it was overshadowed by Final Fantasy) which is also I loved (currently playing DQ8 as I speak). Great video! :D
I just tell people watch castle of cagliostro then mystery of mamo then start at part 4 and watch that series through and form there I feel people get the overview of what the franchise has to offer Mamo is a very horny and morally grey lupin Cagliostro is the hero lupin And part 4 goes over a nice series arch but has lupin present himself as both a hero but also a criminal still.
That's a great way to put it! Mystery of Mamo and Cagliostro get through a wide range of Lupin themes, gives a good idea of what the character may experience in his stories in a theatrical, digestible format.
Thing is that Twilight Gemini cemented my fan status for Lupin along with the rebroadcasts of mostly Part III and others in the Philippines back in the 2000s Era... good times, yet surprising that Lupin III isn't up there in classics popularity... reminds me of the After War : Gundam X situation, yet another overlooked series...
I got into the franchise because I saw the trailer for the first and it interested me. I was able to watch the movie on Hulu, and am now watching the dub of part 2, and it is really funny. Tubi has quite a few of the movies and shows.
you left out zenigata's and lupin's close relationship; how they occasionally offer support to one another and team up against another more deadly enemy. Important element!
Personally I'd start with part 2 english. Some times they just have fun with it and reference 2000s pop culture in jokes. Making the setting some how timeless.
Ah, are you referring to the remake of the first episode in season 5? That one was pretty good, TMS was faithful to what they made decades ago. I liked it a lot!
I cannot say weather I condone nor deny the act of piracy, but in the modern day of anti-consumerisum (especially with Lupan) it has become the morally right option, and sometimes the only option for some. If you can afford to spend a lot on multiple streaming sevices even though you dont own the product or spend even more on physical copies that you DO own then more power too you, but know that no one is stopping you from pirating the show.
FIRST, watch Castle of Cagliostro before anything else. Then watch the part 2/ Red Jacket Series After that whatever you pick next whether its the older or newer shows and movies, the it doesn't really matter. As long as you watch Series 4 before Series 5
I should've said, in Japan there's been a blu ray for all of them. Part 2's releases in US are only on DVD, VHS, and laser disc. As of now, at least... HiDive is the way I recommend to watch Part 2, since it's the easiest way to watch it. I own the DVD's for Part 2, just haven't seen a Blu Ray release. Funnily enough they finally did release a Blu Ray for Part 3 out of all things. I'm sure they'll get around to releasing it in the US at some point.
you know what, this could also be my failed compression of that particular episode when this was being edited. I took the episodes from a Blu-ray into my computer and then compressed them into mp4 files for Premiere -- hmm, thanks for catching that! I didn't notice at first
i am just starting to get in to lupin the 3rd and the problem is i live in australia and there is not that much we can get we can get dvds of the movies of castle of i am not sure how to say it and the mumbo movie ( the one about the clones ) and the spin off show about his girlfriend and because we have the same region code as the uk we can get blurays of parts 4 and 5 and the first movie but that is about it
Nah Im prepared for another big franchise. The One Piece live action got me into One Piece I can handle Lupin III The first getting me interested in Lupin, IM READY!!!
I mean, with lupin on you just kind of just jump right in. There isn't no good point in watching loop on the third. I mean lupin on the third is just a good all around Series slash movie Franchise.
That's true, I made this video moreso for people who feel like they NEED a structure. Coming off of more popular anime shows can make someone feel uneasy about how massive Lupin is. Ultimately, because of how timeless the stories are, anyone can jump into any episode and have a blast
My introduction to Lupin was Castle Of Cagliostro though i didn't know his name was Lupin because they called him Wolf in the version i watched even though his calling card still says Lupin, is that why they made Mr. Wolf the protagonist of The Bad Guys?
Good question. Hmm.... when it comes to Lupin I'm definitely more of a sub guy. I will say Castle of Cagliostro has a great dub, specifically the dub with David Hayter. That one comes from the Manga Entertainment dub of the film. There's that, and then the dub of the Woman Called Fujiko Mine movies are also well-done. Hmm.... other than that, can't think of anything at the moment
I knew nothing about Lupin other than a vague awareness of the name. I found this video after viewing this : ua-cam.com/video/kawYXeUxg28/v-deo.html I believe is from the "The First" movie and now I feel more tempted to try watching this franchise. That you for quenching my curiosity.
TLDR: Part 2: eps 1, 58, 74, 99, 104, 112, 143, 145, 148, 150-155 Part 3: Skip Part 4: the whole thing (fav is ep 10) Part 5: sequentially as well Part 6: same Free roam around.
this seems like a scumbag move to not watch the entire video. But im just so enamored by the artstyle, music, and the way Lupin holds himself in the small clips ive seen that i just gotta gtab your list and dive in as blind as possible.
Also you forgot to mention the third way to get all these shows. 🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠
That's a fair point, I intentionally stuffed more content in this vid to give a recap of every available show as of today. This video serves as more of a remake of a previous video I made a few years back, as this corrects a lot of what I was telling people of how to get into Lupin. With a longer video though, I see it's more demanding to ask people to watch the entire video for what seems like a simple answer -- oh well! Thanks for stopping by
Thanks for watching! I did make one small mistake at 6:54, I meant to say "katakana" not "hiragana". Oops, my bad. Enjoy the vid!
Makes total sense. Inspector Gadget has these same vibes but in a kid friendly way
Finally somebody else who compares Lupin III to Scooby-Doo.
That's the impression I got from it initially. Granted the first episode I saw had a robotic loch ness monster which sounds very Scooby-Doo.
@@SNKJay
The good old Zenigata:
"LUUUPAAAAN!"
I always wanted ti see that one but still havent yet
@@SNKJayI'm the opposite, got into Conan first and am now looking into how to watch Lupin. It definitely is a fantastic show, though I have to recommend the Magic Kaito manga before everything else.
wow we are the same!
Miyazaki Lupin: *actually being a nice man*
Osumi and Koike Lupin: "IT'S MURDER TIME!"
Monkey Punch Lupin: "Murder? That's cute"
You gotta chill with the stock footage
I finished this anime like 2 months ago and I was looking for a good video about Lupin III and I found yours. Thanks for the time you spend making this video, I love it👍🏻
Thanks for watching my guy! Glad it's finding more Lupin fans, hahahaha
I star with a myzaki marathon and watched castle of cagliostro and the characters were so awesome I wanted to go on more adventures with them…. Little do I know 6 series and 40 years of movies later we still on this wild rollercoaster ride
It's crazy right? I'm happy someone out there still cares about these characters, enough to make new shows and movies 60 some years later
@@SNKJay I think there should be a GTA style game made with this license. Are you familiar with the Yakuza series by Sega? I think a cartoony anime equivalent to Yakuza could be done but using the Lupin license. (yakuza also balance series things with humor)
10:22 that's how we pronunce he's name in italian
I actually got myself into this series thanks to part 2 airing on Adult Swim.
:-)
You know you love me.
I do😆
we do love you lupin the 3rd, we really do
I just wanted to say that after watching this, I STILL don't know where to start because it all looks appealing!
And since I like to watch Eng DUB, and only if it's satisfactory, which means that if the characters are still the same as in the original, and if the voice actor performances are good enough, that's why I didn't watch a couple of movies because they didn't seem interesting to me and they weren't dubbed, so this is my order of how I watched this anime:
Lupine III THE GREEN SUIT (first 23 episodes and two movies).
Thank you! Yeah, it took a bit of effort, but it was all worth it! And I intend on doing it again (and again and again haha)

Wednesday Addams about Lupin the Third:
"Definitely my architype!"
No prob! Thanks for watching! Lupin's got awesome OPs, love listening to them too xD
This video needs more views. Very detailed and helpful. Thanks for the time you put into this video.
My favorite lupin shows are the ones made by Takeshi koike and the episode of Part 4 where he is in prison
Funny you mention that episode in Part 4. It's definitely a callback to a Part 1 episode where Lupin got locked up, and def one of my fav Lupin episodes. Takeshi Koike is phenomenal, it's a shame his work is underrated
@@SNKJay I hope Takeshi does a special/movie that revolves around zenigata like how his past movies revolved around other characters
Getting stoned and watching the Part 2 Dub at 2AM sure got me into it 🤣
Long time no see! Nice to see one of my fav video essayists back!
Long time no see, my guy! Thanks, I do try my best
Part 5 is one of the best anime ive seen. Very special to my heart.
Green jacket and blue jacket are my favorite look but the red jacket is pretty iconic
There's a ton of the movies on Tubi currently
They made it more kid-friendly in Part 1 and 2 though lol.
There's an old video on UA-cam where they had some kind of Lupin fan panel with the voice actors and the audience consists of only children lol.
ua-cam.com/video/yRvd185-XAg/v-deo.htmlsi=nZtAIKi_RX83Ii_z
It's only really when Takeshi Koike came in and made The Woman Called Fujiko Mine where they try to apply a more adult feel into Lupin.
^^ Thank you so much for this video and have an awesome day ^^
Some good High Quality UA-cam. Great Video.

Great to see you back.
Ye, I'm happy I got time back! Can't wait to upload more stuff
Step 1: Watch the show.
There saved you 50 minutes.
Lupin is amazing and is incredibly slept on.
This was a fun video. I also got into it by watching the Red Jacket episodes on Adult Swim and I’ve been hooked ever since. I even subscribe to HiDive only for access to parts zero through six.
I love that you make these every so often. Also, I'd love a video on your thoughts on the newest season

The Red Jacket Series, also known as "The Really Long One."
Heh. That FF IX mention was my achievement! lol
Glad to see you're back with a new Lupin video.
After watching the video:
I am still 50 episodes shy of finishing Part 2 and haven't seen anything from part 3 yet.
SPOILERS:
The gang just waiting at a trainstation and with every passing train someone else is just gone.
@@Scamander They also recently released a Lupin Manga in Germany for the first time.
For now, physical media is the only option for tracking these things down (especially "Plot of the Fuma Clan", sheesh so rare)
i had seen the prison of the past movie from 2019 before but
i got really in to lupin the 3rd earlier this year
i watched everything in like 2-3 months (yes including the cancelled lupin the 8th)
from time to time i re-watch some of the movies or specials
waiting for a new season or something to happen (i know lupin and jigen make an appearance in the city hunter movie that just came out)

Thank you!

Lupin III The First
I know for a fact Lupin AMV's (from Goemon's bloodspray especially) were BIG in getting people into Lupin.
Good times.
I got into Lupin accidentally when I was a kid in a videostore and I came across the Castle of Cagliostro.
excellent video!!!!!thank you
No prob! Thanks for watching, have a great day :)
I’m current watching Pursuit of Harimao’s Treasue (Dubbed). It’s pretty cool, I like it so far. Ima go back to the beginning movies after I finish
Been watching Lupin 3 part 5 and it is pure silliness and fun. Love it. Gonna check out the rest and read the manga because why not?
Most movies are on Tubi in the US. Free streaming with ads.
4:58 That Gen X snub.
That being said, I also highly recommend Episode 0: First Encounter, and also Operation Return the Treasure, both were really good, with the former being a more serious movie in tone compared to most movies, and the latter having a good story, and also genuinely having some of my favorite jokes from some of the movies…
Except for when they found the word impossible in Napoleon’s dictionary, nothing will ever top that
A lot of the Lupin content is on Tubi and Fuma conspiracy is on UA-cam both japanese and English dub versions
Great job on this video
did anyone notice lupin the 3rd in duck tales? i screamed my face off when I saw him in 2017, cant remember what episode but i absolutely lost it.
I just tell people watch castle of cagliostro then mystery of mamo then start at part 4 and watch that series through and form there I feel people get the overview of what the franchise has to offer
Mamo is a very horny and morally grey lupin
Cagliostro is the hero lupin
And part 4 goes over a nice series arch but has lupin present himself as both a hero but also a criminal still.
That's a great way to put it! Mystery of Mamo and Cagliostro get through a wide range of Lupin themes, gives a good idea of what the character may experience in his stories in a theatrical, digestible format.
Whatever happened to The Secret of Twilight Gemini?
@@asakayosapro I think it's just a meh level movie I'm glad people enjoy it but there's better tv specials out there
@@asakayosapro It's alright imo, I'm not the biggest fan of that movie. Might review it some day
Thing is that Twilight Gemini cemented my fan status for Lupin along with the rebroadcasts of mostly Part III and others in the Philippines back in the 2000s Era... good times, yet surprising that Lupin III isn't up there in classics popularity... reminds me of the After War : Gundam X situation, yet another overlooked series...
I got into the franchise because I saw the trailer for the first and it interested me. I was able to watch the movie on Hulu, and am now watching the dub of part 2, and it is really funny.
Tubi has quite a few of the movies and shows.
Lore or gore. For lore go for pt 4 or 6 but for gore go for everything else and certain movies so look for the jackets
you left out zenigata's and lupin's close relationship; how they occasionally offer support to one another and team up against another more deadly enemy. Important element!
Personally I'd start with part 2 english. Some times they just have fun with it and reference 2000s pop culture in jokes. Making the setting some how timeless.
I did watch the og but the animation didn’t catch my attention at the time, but I really loved the remake of the first film
Ah, are you referring to the remake of the first episode in season 5? That one was pretty good, TMS was faithful to what they made decades ago. I liked it a lot!
same as well, plus I really like this video hope it blows up soon!
Big help. Thanks
Great video
LUPE FIASCO FAN SPOTTED!!!!!!!!!!!
What a good kid. Looks away from adult and nudity stuff. Then why are you watching lupin?
I cannot say weather I condone nor deny the act of piracy, but in the modern day of anti-consumerisum (especially with Lupan) it has become the morally right option, and sometimes the only option for some.
If you can afford to spend a lot on multiple streaming sevices even though you dont own the product or spend even more on physical copies that you DO own then more power too you, but know that no one is stopping you from pirating the show.
Yeah it's kinda hard to find an authentic movie copy from 1970s at a fair price. Unless they put every film on Netflix or anything
FIRST, watch Castle of Cagliostro before anything else.
Then watch the part 2/ Red Jacket Series
After that whatever you pick next whether its the older or newer shows and movies, the it doesn't really matter.
As long as you watch Series 4 before Series 5
Thank you 🙏
Wheres the Part 2 Blu Ray? You said all of them, but Cant find that one.
3:43 unrelated but this 60 fps ai smoothing looks so terrible
you know what, this could also be my failed compression of that particular episode when this was being edited.
This guy really needs to know how to get to the point for real
I mean, with lupin on you just kind of just jump right in. There isn't no good point in watching loop on the third. I mean lupin on the third is just a good all around Series slash movie Franchise.
That's true, I made this video moreso for people who feel like they NEED a structure. Coming off of more popular anime shows can make someone feel uneasy about how massive Lupin is. Ultimately, because of how timeless the stories are, anyone can jump into any episode and have a blast
Sparrow Wolf brought me here!
Very helpful video 👏
Good to hear, thanks for watching!
i just have crush on love part 1. not flashy and bluesy
1:17
Down the bottom of the screen......
Kaga?!
Nice video
Thanks! Hope you having a good day/night!
Just watched green VS red for the first time and i love it. What's your take on the special? Fandom seems torn about this one.
My introduction to Lupin was Castle Of Cagliostro though i didn't know his name was Lupin because they called him Wolf in the version i watched even though his calling card still says Lupin, is that why they made Mr. Wolf the protagonist of The Bad Guys?
GREAT HELP
But which movie dubs should we watch if we prefer them over subs?
Good question. Hmm.... when it comes to Lupin I'm definitely more of a sub guy. I will say Castle of Cagliostro has a great dub, specifically the dub with David Hayter. That one comes from the Manga Entertainment dub of the film. There's that, and then the dub of the Woman Called Fujiko Mine movies are also well-done. Hmm.... other than that, can't think of anything at the moment
@@SNKJay Well if you do end up thinking of more, it could make a good follow-up video
"This show was popular enough to get a Jimmy Kimmel segment."
I'm....not entirely sure what level of popularity we're supposed to equate with that.
I'm sorry, I need to go back and watch part 2. I do not remember Queen of the Damned being a Lupin plot.
I knew nothing about Lupin other than a vague awareness of the name. I found this video after viewing this : ua-cam.com/video/kawYXeUxg28/v-deo.html
I believe is from the "The First" movie and now I feel more tempted to try watching this franchise. That you for quenching my curiosity.
With Chopin the prenouciation thing is because he's Polish. Granted it's not a Polish surname
Do i watch it in the order of the year or..
TLDR:
Part 2: eps 1, 58, 74, 99, 104, 112, 143, 145, 148, 150-155
Part 3: Skip
Part 4: the whole thing (fav is ep 10)
Part 5: sequentially as well
Part 6: same
Free roam around.
You got it! Thanks!
this seems like a scumbag move to not watch the entire video. But im just so enamored by the artstyle, music, and the way Lupin holds himself in the small clips ive seen that i just gotta gtab your list and dive in as blind as possible.
Also you forgot to mention the third way to get all these shows.

Tubi has it all for free.
Bruh start from part 1
really 45 min video on watch order
That's a fair point, I intentionally stuffed more content in this vid to give a recap of every available show as of today. This video serves as more of a remake of a previous video I made a few years back, as this corrects a lot of what I was telling people of how to get into Lupin. With a longer video though, I see it's more demanding to ask people to watch the entire video for what seems like a simple answer -- oh well! Thanks for stopping by
