  • Today, the Lupin crew takes a Voyage to Danger when some Orders to Assassinate Lupin come in! Alright, the tiles are a little weird, but this Lupin III special is still a blast. With Masaaki Osumi back in the director's chair and a harder, more serious edge, let's see how this voyage turns out.

Lupin videos are back! Hope you like this somewhat new format; I wanted to spruce these videos up a bit while keeping more or less the same structure.
Oh and I'm sorry for pronouncing Funimation wrong; I already know about it so you don't have to make a comment about it. (Seriously. Don't be an ass.)
What are your thoughts on Voyage to Danger? What about the Funimation cast? Let me know!

Dragon of Doom was the last time Yasuo Yamada voiced Lupin before passing away in 1995. When you get the Island of Assassins, can you mention that Ellen was voiced by Emi Shinohara the same VA as Sailor Jupiter

I figured you were just making fun of the cast for saying all the character names wrong.

God I just gotta say I love your Lupin Retrospective Series, I started the franchise a few weeks ago and am watching it in a somewhat chronological order, and before the start of every movie I check your videos to see if the dub or sub is better (and how much zenigata content there is in it lmao, he's my fave character so I appreciate you mentioning which movies utilise him best and which don't) then come back when I've finished the movie and watch the whole video to see what you thought of it! It's making my Lupin experience loads more enjoyable! I'm up to Napoleon's Dictionary so I'll be up to date with your vids probably by tomorrow, I just wanted to let you know what a blast your content is for me! Keep at it! I'm excited to see it all!!

Ah Voyage To Danger. The one where Jigen became my favorite Lupin III charater for the 100th time.

Small moment I loved: when Lupins retreating the villain mocks his lack of loyalty. Lupin snarks back that he'll return but is told Jigen died. Lupin's reaction shows he's hit hard by the realization. Doesn't really go anywhere but it's an appropriate critique of Lupin, seeing how he seems to take Jigen and Goemon for granted (Part 5 later went hard into this concept).
Everything about VTD is well done, got a warm poppy and dark color pallette, nice Jigen focus, faithful teammate Fujiko, and side characters with a presence, all good stuff. Nothing about it stands out much to me, but it's good moments are great. Bringing back Osumi was my favorite aspect. I loved his pacing and stylish direction, especially for Lupin. I kinda love early Part 1 and this feels like his work for sure.

Voyage to danger is so good. I don't think that it does anything too special but at this point of the franchise I think this is the special that it needed (also I enjoy this new style to the videos. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this series goes for the future!)

I love this Special - mostly because it was the first Lupin Media I ever saw back in 2001, when it premiered in Germany on MTV. It together with the following 3 Specials were edited into 4 Parts and aired as a 16-Part-TV Series with a new Intro-Theme. It helped establish the Lupin III Franchise in Germany back then and helped to convince german Anime-Publishers aquire more Lupin III Licences over the Years. Thanks to it we got a faithful new Dub of Castle of Cagliostro as well as a Dub of Farewell to Nostradamus in 2006. And then later on thanks to reruns of the Specials over the last few Years on German TV again a Lupin III Renaissance happened starting in 2018 with the Release of the Detective Conan Crossovers, followed by the 3 Takeshi Koike Specials as well as the CG Movie The First in 2021. And now? We recently got a Dub of the "Woman called Fujico Mine" Series, as well as a Dub for Part 6 in the Making. They also announced that by the end of 2023 there will be a Dub of Part 1 in Germany. It's just amazing!
All thanks to MTV and the german Dub of Voyage to Danger (titled "Der Höllentrip" or in English "One Hell of a Trip") in 2001 :)
    Thanks for this Retrospective!

FINALLY, a movie that actually is one of the 4 Lupin Elite movies. It's one the four movies that actually are the pinnacle of the series alongside
    Castle of Cagliostro
    Fuma Conspiracy
    Tokyo Crisis
Farewell of Nostradaemus is close but a part of the middle section narratively is completely unfocused and feels like it's a detour.

I think the major 4 are
      Mamo
      Cagliostro
      Fuma
      Golden Babylon
(Just all repersent lupin in every single way )
Then the special that the best Definitely are
      Voyage to danger
      Island of assassin's
      Tokyo crysis
Heck those 3 specials alone just really out weigh the other TV specials by a Mile

This is one of my favorite Lupin specials, so I'm really happy to see you cover it. It's right up there with 1997's Island of Assassins for me. I love the animation, characters (both new and returning), designs, soundtrack, plot, and overall darker tone. Considering that this was supposed to be the last TV special, in addition to this being one of the last times Mr. Yamada voiced Lupin, it feels somber at times, but with a good feeling of closure. A must-watch in my book!

A personal favourite, of these specials. It has some fun action, a cool setpiece, all of the characters get to have some good moments, and it shows once again why Jigen is simply a delight.
It's just a fantastic all a-rounder of a special and one I tend to put on every once and awhile to enjoy the thrills. Not the best special, but a wonderful little package of Lupin joy.

While certainly fine on their own and clearly successful, the first four specials really do feel more like status quo than anything, more like extended Part 2 and 3 episodes.
With Voyage to Danger, they really did a lot to shake things up, first by ditching the more Mamo-type scarecrow body Lupin for a sleeker, modern, more 90s design by Hisashi Eguchi, who - fun fact! - initially pitched a yellow jacket for this special!!
I’m also glad that they tried to experiment with Zenigata majorly in this film, in my opinion it paid off. He was sort off shoehorned into the last 4 specials and it grew tired. Having him lose his position and turn to Lupin was very touching - as he kind of has nobody else lol. It shows how his and Lupin’s relationship would be if they weren’t on opposite sides of the law, which you don’t see often!!
The next two specials sort of immediately pivots back to formula, featuring a more Part 1 style design, but this one movie set the tone for the rest up till 2004!!
Can’t wait to see the next reviews, Cloud!
EDIT: ALSO!! Hottest Fujiko, don’t @ me

    • @_mango_
      @_mango_ Рік тому

Also, I must say the character building and interactions are pretty neat. They just sorta wait sometimes or do something menial, it feels welcome! I also think that the bit with Lupin going to the weapons market was pretty cool. I sorta just imagined him making these cockamamie weapons and tricks himself, but I enjoy the idea that he actually buys a whole bunch of gag weapons that Jigen just sees as junk lol. It was also a pretty sweet Chekov’s gun!!

This is still my Favorite entry in the Lupin franchise. I might be a Bit biased Herr, because it Was my entry point into the Series. In Germany we didn't get much Lupin. Part I Just Release läßt year. So when we got it in Germany a Channel Just bought a couple of specials, cut Thema apart to have Sort of a Series.
IT was this one, the dragon of doom, one in the dessert and the other with a girl that Was hier to a huge Company i think. This was the most memorable By far. I loved the grittiness. It fehlt like a Bond movie and i was there for it. Also i really love the German dub. It oozes character. Like how senigata stumbles over his tounge when ever he's excited. "I'm Inspektor Zenipol from Intergata eeeeeer Zenigata from Interpol!" or "Stop! I'm on your sie! Don't shit eeeer don't shoot!" and Lupin and his Gang are Professionalität but they are All a Bit awkward. Like Lupin has a nickname for everyone. He calls Jigen grumpy bear. They think they are cool but miss the Mark. Like Ash from Evil Dead.
Lupin as a franchise Reliefs heavily on Exposition. And that annoys me to no end. If something is clear from context or picture i don't need Thema to explain it to me. The German translator Was appearantly of the same opinion. Some of the Exposition was scratched and turned into some Light Banater among the character fleshing their relationship out so much more.
Also Germany had a unique Opening Song for Lupin. It's no comparison to the original, but still an interesting Listen with it's own feel.

It seems that the Funimation dub has something in common with the Italian dub. Here in Italy for many years and in many special they called Fujiko as Fujiko Main instead of Mine. It's only in recent years that they started using the correct pronunciation. And even with Main it was still better than the dub of the Part 2 of the anime where for some adaption reason (presumably to make it look more French like the original Lupin) Fujiko was called Margot. But they still don't get Goemon right, calling him Ghe-mon after all these years.

I don't agree that is the most violent special. Walter P-38 can at least compete.
P.S. I've heard that voice of Yamada is different because Osumi asked him about that, not becuase illness

I like this one. I like Funimation's dubs, even if they mispronounce names, but I prefer the Part 2 cast every time. After watching One Piece, and then checking out these FUNimation dubbed specials for the first time, Chris Sabat's Jigen just sounds almost too much like Zoro, so I keep hearing this early 20-something voice coming out of this 30-something guy and it was weird at first. But, I've come around on it, and here he gives it a deeper voice, which is nice.
BTW, The Secret of Twilight Gemini is the first special FUNimation dubbed. Why they chose that one, I'll never know, as it's pretty mediocre.

I found this feature fairly middling. The same worn out Lupin tropes and cliches, weighed down by forgettable villains (Keith had potential, but they wasted time with Karen), uneven action, and lame comedy. Goemon is completely wasted (as usual). There were a few good bits, like Lupin being launched in a missile from the sub and Lupin stealing the nuclear reactors, and I like the generally concept of the movie, but the execution is pretty forgettable. I have to shake my head when people talk about how good this one is. Also, Funimation's cast is horrid. Strait tries, but fails. Sabat and McFarland sleepwalk. McCoy is too masculine-sounding. Zenigata's is terrible. The closest thing Funimation gets to good with dubbing Lupin is The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, and that's just because they brought in Michelle Ruff and Richard Epcar, and Josh Grelle's Oscar was great.
