Hey, dev here! Thanks for playing! Just to clarify: Veloren is open-source and community-driven. We're got a pretty motivated and large development team at this point and the project gets improved on a near-daily basis, so you don't need to worry about the project dying. All code is available online, so anybody is free to fork it and make their own improvements whenever they like too!
Such a shame what happened to CW. Post launch the dev went radio silent. At least the voxel rpg target market still exists to want alternatives like this.
he released an update a few months ( a year maybe) ago. assume he went silent again. get the feeling he is gonna release updates every few years just to surprise the heck out of ppl.
In the fan Cube World Discord there’s a channel called “signs of Wollay”. Every couple months he’ll respond to some emails and let them know what he’s working on. He’s still actively working on the game and trying to implement people’s feedback, he’s just not really a communicator-not really much of a surprise since people are still insulting and threatening him to this day.
@@hardbrocklife Hey friend! I'm by no means saying what happened was right; I think the moment Wollay and his wife put Cube World up for purchase in its early stages is the moment they could no longer claim it to be simply a passion project immune to criticism. That being said, when you're not receiving just criticism but thousands of people threatening you and people telling you you're some horrible, terrible person for publishing what you saw as merely your passion project, I'm not sure it's unreasonable to withdraw from the public view. Also, friend, I'm not sure being neurodivergent is purely an excuse for people to avoid responsibility. I would recommend doing a bit of research and spending some time meeting and interacting with people who are neurodivergent if you believe that-just a thought. :)
While it's definitely a shame, if you read between the lines and pick up on context there's a bunch going on there. I think at the end of the day it's important that people (we as a gaming community) need to remember that developers are just people like us. CW got a *LOT* more attention and as a result hype than anyone could reasonably expect. That level of attention can be difficult to handle for anyone. A lot of indie developers that got a hit on their hands end up struggling under that level of pressure. It's also a big shift to go from essentially something that you've made alone or with a few people from your own homes to that getting the attention of millions. Would they've done well to bring in some kind of PR or community management to handle that aspect? Absolutely. But as seen by tons of other examples many indie developers end up breaking under that and selling what was their dream. Or worse, seeing that dream shatter entirely. Imagine if essentially overnight you had the eyes of millions around the world analyzing your every tweet or digital movement. Criticizing anything that didn't exactly fell in line with their expectations? Now imagine you weren't really a people person to start with. Yet all these people are not just expecting but DEMANDING you keep them in the loop...
@@leoleo1035 I’m not sure exactly what you’re trying to tell me, I’m afraid. You think he’s some dastardly individual who created an elaborate plan to steal money from people who like a more niche genre of video games? What is it that they say about not attributing to malice what can be attributed to something else?
My problem with Veloren as it is right now is the combat. Enemies are too spread out, and it can be nearly impossible to find enemies appropriate for your level when you're starting out. On top of that, the attacks you yourself can use tend to be clunky and poorly animated. To me, most of the appeal of the original Cube World alpha was the fluid, skill-dependant combat and the addictive progression loop, and until Veloren gets to work on those aspects, it doesn't really appeal to me.
@Syrahl696 well, you're in luck. Veloren in overhaul the skilltree of every weapon kind. It'll take a while but the plan is to make abilities considerably more horizontal (so no single ability will be better than another) while also having a multitude of various abilities that may be slightly better depending on the situation. Most weapons will have roughly 36-50 available abilities whereas the player can only use 5 at a time. The animations are also quite old and relatively difficult to make (as it's done solely through code) so there aren't a lot willing to work on it, and those that are tend to be busy. There has been discussion, and progress, regarding the polishing of existing animations, adding more keyframes and the such.
@@uncomfysilence3364 if I knew how to do that I'd ask if I could help, but the next best thing would be to start sending money over monthly to help them out
If those are your concerns, then I suspect you may not have a full grasp on what "alpha" means in terms of development. (And frankly I'd say that Cube World alpha was much closer to a true beta, while this is definitely far earlier alpha.) From the sounds of it you're expecting a more developed and polished game, this isn't it. Not yet at least. Whether it'll become that? We'll have to see. But I would urge you to take such things into consideration. You're commenting on features that are often only added later in development as they can be subject to change to a lot more fundamental design aspects that need to be in place first.
Very nice video! You'll be happy to hear that every weaponkind will recieve a complete overhaul with actual talent trees and multiple skills, and that quests and such are planned as well.
