Indeed. He's responsible for what I think is the best quality of Billy Talent's music: their guitar riffs and solos that are impressive while still being catchy, clean, and calculated.
Frabjous Ian produces for the band on the last two albums...he is responsible for virtually everything... while he allows everyones own input if you read some of their biographys theres talk about Ian writing majority of the songs and pushing Ben vocally
@@prismsedits2320 um not really, blues players were early examples of crafting melody and rhythm lines together. Robert Johnson for example. Chet Atkins is a later example of fingerstyle that incorporated those elements. Jimi is an amazing rhythm player for sure. Little Wing is a great example
it still amaze me how Ian D'sa mix the notes and chords in a riff to sound like rhythm and lead at the same time, Billy Talent is a band that I like to play in guitar very much because the style is so much fun to perform and you have to get in the groove of the rhythm to master the songs, in a way is like funky metal because the chords and the flow of the rhythm
I've always noticed the fact that Ian plays the role of a rhythm and lead guitarist...I love that! His songs seem pretty simply but I've been playing guitar for 5-6 years, and even though I'm not the best guitarist I still have trouble playing songs from them
I stopped listening to Billy Talent after the 2nd album. But the imprint Ian D'sa left on me persists to this day. I realized about 7-8 years after learning to play guitar that I borrow so much from his style of playing rhythms and leads together. One of the most horribly underrated guitar players out there.
"I was developing a style that was trying to be both (lead and rhythm)"... wow, words out my mouth- because Billy Talent and Ian inspired me to start playing guitar in Gr. 6. I wanted play guitar like THAT guy. Still playing at 26 years old, seen BT 6 times... amazing TALENT EDIT: I distinctly remember my guitar teacher in Gr. 6/6 trying to teach my Billy Talent riffs, and he was so weirded out by the "Bach-like" chords and the fact that it was one guitar doing the sound of two. Amazing guitar teacher because he got those riffs pretty bang on for me lol
Ian you brought so much to the "rythm and lead but not soloist guiatrist" (which I consider I am) ! You know, the kind of guitarist who loves rythm and lead guitar the same but who's not John Petrucci ? I love your style of combined melody and rythm. It's poweful. And watching this video got me your secret ingredient : upstrokes on the melody notes! That changes everything and gives the punch that lacked before I watched this video ! Thanks a lot and hope to se you soon on stage...
Ian your guitar riffs are so great and so original man. really unique stuff. it must feel great to finally hit your own style and know that it sounds good. i love the part about u incorporating saloon type piano into your guitar riffs. u can hear that influence just ring out. as soon as u said that in this video i immediately recognised the influence. just great guitar man.
I've always thought from his style that Ian must have been a classical guitarist at some point, but the fact that he was a classical pianist is a great explanation too.
i feel kinda honoured to live in that period when one of the best guitar players of our time created and improved an imaging guitar style which hasn't been there before... Ian is just amazingly talented!
He is so him... A stratocaster blending classical and heavy sound and Hardcore. Haven't seen nobody squeezing a strat's sound in this style. I mean Gojira use a tele and John 5, but this guy he is unique. I bet he plays classical guitar too because of his riffs having. That bass notes rooted as if it's a thumb.
I literally just want them all to bring out something of all the instrumentals of their instruments. like when Ian played this suffering it just sounds so sick
Man I was about to write that a lot of his lines have a classical or medieval feel and I was wondering where that influence came from.... then he mentioned he played classical piano! Certainly one of the more interesting guitarists around.
Tears into Wine, one of the songs that´s very similar to one of our previous records The Ex which kinda goes like this -> -> -> Plays exactly like the studio version :D Ian D'Sa is the god :)
When I first heard their first album as BT, I could have sworn there were two guitars because some of those riffs just seemed so unwieldy to play with one guitar. The more I learned the more I was proven wrong.
I've always thought that Ian has a very unique style, now I know is because he's always trying to be rythm and lead at the same time! and he make very complicate riffs, a very talented man...
This guy is CRIMINALLY underrated.
Absolutely. I agree.
Indeed. He's responsible for what I think is the best quality of Billy Talent's music: their guitar riffs and solos that are impressive while still being catchy, clean, and calculated.

Agree
Guy creates the sickest riffs ever
Ian droppin the D since the mid 90's.
lmaoooo
+rotkiv ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
:'D Made my day
Hahah! Fuck yeah!!!!
Droppin the D for Harambe.
Such an underrated guitarist.
I don't know who Billy is but I can say for certain that this guy is the Talent.
Wow, motherf... !.... This line is so genious !
what a genius guitarist came with the idea of combining the job of a lead and a rhythm into hybrid
Well altought i respect Ian alot this idea was first popularized with jimmy hendrix
@@prismsedits2320 To be fair, I don't know of any other guitarist that plays punkrock like D'sa. He's fairly unique and criminally underappreciated.
Ian d'sa is my fav guitarist
one of the greatest guitarist EVER. his style really needs to be recognized. nothin like D'sa....awesome man
it still amaze me how Ian D'sa mix the notes and chords in a riff to sound like rhythm and lead at the same time, Billy Talent is a band that I like to play in guitar very much because the style is so much fun to perform and you have to get in the groove of the rhythm to master the songs, in a way is like funky metal because the chords and the flow of the rhythm
A truly unique and iconic riffmaster. Love how bright his tone is
Best riff writer ever.
One of the most creative musicians when it comes to melodies.
So this is why they have this full sound even live. He is rhythm and lead guitarist.
I've always noticed the fact that Ian plays the role of a rhythm and lead guitarist...I love that! His songs seem pretty simply but I've been playing guitar for 5-6 years, and even though I'm not the best guitarist I still have trouble playing songs from them
I want to hear him play an entire song, just by himself to hear his true talent.
Absolutely agree that would be incredible!
That tone and characteristic style. What an amazing guitarist! oh and lets not forget he also sings while playing.
this guys one of canadas best guitarist if not the best, hella underrated
Oh dear i guess it takes years and a lot of practice to become this perfect! Ian is really one of the best guitarists i've ever seen!
Victoria Indian this style is unique.. Even with years of practical experience it wouldnt be the same
I stopped listening to Billy Talent after the 2nd album. But the imprint Ian D'sa left on me persists to this day. I realized about 7-8 years after learning to play guitar that I borrow so much from his style of playing rhythms and leads together.

YES the riff on “this suffering” is ridiculous!!
Ian Talent
I love how clean he is playing
Talented and incredibly creative. Holy fucking shit
AxCYeR
Yeah, I like you kinda
Ian you brought so much to the "rythm and lead but not soloist guiatrist" (which I consider I am) !

What an unbelievably underrated, creative and brilliant guitar player.
Nice guy too!
Most underrated guitarist of all time, guy is so fuckin gnarly

Love his riffs
It is an absolute BLAST playing along to anything Billy Talent does.
I've always thought from his style that Ian must have been a classical guitarist at some point, but the fact that he was a classical pianist is a great explanation too.
"I started dropping D in the mid nineties".. wait what?
its a type of tuning and it sounds awesome
It's funny cuz for this song is using Drop C#
Hahahaha I think it’s even more funny that they didn’t get it Tyler
One of the most outstanding and truly original sounding guitarists.
thank you for blessing us with your style!
This guy is so underrated compared to other guitarists... This guy's got his own sound
i feel kinda honoured to live in that period when one of the best guitar players of our time created and improved an imaging guitar style which hasn't been there before... Ian is just amazingly talented!
His guitar style is wonderful to listen to.
He is so him... A stratocaster blending classical and heavy sound and Hardcore. Haven't seen nobody squeezing a strat's sound in this style. He actually does play classical guitar, and also bass!
Shit I live his voice..
the riff of this suffering is so amazing.
My favorite guitarist. Genius!
Ian makes this song look easy until you actually try playing it and it's impossible :(
Haha I can play it :)
He's probably played it a few thousand times
Yea, but it's a lovely song to play on guitar
It's probably my favorite song I can play.
Mennims Nice
for me personally the best guitar player on this planet.
oh god i love that intro. favorite hook ever.
God ......I love that melody .....
i freakin like that sound
I literally just want them all to bring out something of all the instrumentals of their instruments. like when Ian played this suffering it just sounds so sick
damn he's fantastic!
Ian I love you so much!!
He is so creative
does anyone know what amp he uses in this vid? or how to get this kind of billy talent tone?
I knew he had to have some classical training somewhere, nice to finally hear a confirmation lol
He is awesome!!!
without doupt you`re the best guitarist ever !
RIFF MASTER
When he played This Suffering like that... damn, I need to learn, that is sick.
such an underrated guitarist
My favourie guitarist
He's my new hero !!
Holy crap. His hair has grown Fedora brims. Incredible.
wow, that is a really interesting take on drop d. For some reason i haven't ever thought of it like that before
is he using an Irig because it sound just like it
Damn this guy is so good
This makes me want to practice
The sound is so nice
Man I was about to write that a lot of his lines have a classical or medieval feel and I was wondering where that influence came from.... then he mentioned he played classical piano! Certainly one of the more interesting guitarists around.
what guitar does he use
Is he related to Sum 41's dave? They are both awesome!
Same! What's it called?
we love you!
He's so damn good
You that boy iannnnnnnn
i like his style
Unique to say the least!
I think its a z-vex pedal called "wooly mamoth" if i do remember right
Billy Talent is AWESOME
Ian's Guitar is AWESOME
Ian D'sa is AWESOME
@Tobias Luken He use a "Fender American Deluxe Strat" with Seymour Pick´s
Fan girl i luv it omg
Ian D'sa is the FUCKING MANNN!!!!!
He is a genius!
Tears into Wine, one of the songs that´s very similar to one of our previous records The Ex which kinda goes like this -> -> -> Plays exactly like the studio version :D
Ian D'Sa is the god :)
Flawless
wish i could play guitar like him :o
I must learn this on guitar
I try it but its so fucking hard to play -.-
Das Dennis I know what you mean bro -.-
Kack Hater I literally would need to lock myself in a basement for a year and I'd still sound like the guy from Jaws scratching on the blackboard.
Metronome my friends. The Metronome is the key and your best friend
Does anyone hear the kirby theme in the opening guitar riff?
This guy really has his own thing going on. Not that I can tell a strat doing such a heavy distorted yet nitid sound.
he created it, and he liked it.
Such a great guitarist, playing in drop D is easier in the bass notes but once you can master the tinier digits he can make any song out of it. 👍 🎸
Which pedal do you use?
its a zvex pedal called wooly mammoth i believe
its a squier vintage modified 70s stratocaster i think
You are the Chet Atkins of Alternative Rock
What a fuckin beast!!!!🤘🤘🤘
Oh, right - I think I've heard of him using that for other songs too.
i want that distortion pedal ._.
Does Ian have a roller nut on his strat?
Malcom Buckhannon It looks like it. Sweet Lagwagon picture btw
+Malcom Buckhannon Yes. I'm getting his guitar with the red maple leaf on it (custom shop) and I think I don't install a roller nut.
When I first heard their first album as BT, I could have sworn there were two guitars because some of those riffs just seemed so unwieldy to play with one guitar. The more I learned the more I was proven wrong.
Tears into wine is Drop D or Drop C#?
Harun Vazquez C#
he plays like a young god
Damn i need your Hands Ian! ^^
Mans a wizard
I've always thought that Ian has a very unique style, now I know is because he's always trying to be rythm and lead at the same time! and he make very complicate riffs, a very talented man...
pls a guitar workshop of cure for the enemy!
