HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS Movie Review | Slapstick Comedy | Mike Cheslik
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- "Hundreds of Beavers" is one of the most original films we've ever seen: a black-and-white, silent slapstick comedy that's equal parts Looney Tunes and Guy Maddin, with a healthy sprinkling of Tim and Eric's absurdism. We both enjoyed how silly and singular it is, but disagree as to whether it works the whole time. Still, this roadshow release is definitely worth checking out when it plays near you. (Link below to dates and cities.) Mike Cheslik directed and co-wrote this story with star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews about an applejack salesman who must become an expert trapper when the titular beavers destroy his orchards. Co-starring Olivia Graves and Doug Mancheski. In theaters now and streaming this spring.

Saw this at Fantasia; main actor fought a raccoon on stage and they gave us beer during the movie at 2 pm lol
That sounds fun!
Im currently watching this review in the hospital hopped up on pain medication and I swear to god i had to rewind to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating a fever dream!? This looks bonkers in the best way! Lmao😂🤣
Oh no Langley, feel better! Hope you're out of there soon.
@@BreakfastAllDay Thank you! I’m hoping it’s not for long.❤️
@@langleymneelyHey! Stumbled upon this comment. Are you out of the hospital? Hope so. Just wanted to say hello hat I saw this the other night and it’s not only as good as it looks, but way better than can be described.
@@Grim528 Aww thank you for asking! I’m finally out of the hospital. This touches me more than you could know! I had to watch clips from this over again to make sure it wasn’t a ketamine reaction! Lol
@@langleymneelyLol yeah man this movie is real, and it’s glorious! Happy to hear that you are out! Hopefully you don’t have to go back anytime soon.
Disney should throw that money at them for Marvel’s SQUIRREL GIRL !
We learned that Alonso hates everything except Movie 43 and Hundreds of Beavers
Alonzo liked Movie 43? No way! Smh.
I saw this in NYC tonight with a full crowd who were absolutely here for it, and I loved it. I can see why people lose patience with the first half, because it does get repetitive and it's not until well into the movie that you even get an inkling of where it's going or what the ultimate objective is. But once we get to the last half hour, I was so glad we had all that build-up and layering in the various gags because it pays off so beautifully. The filmmakers told us this was coming to Blu-ray in July and I can't wait to watch it again.
The middle of the film is slightly slow imo I admit, but that was just setting up for one of the greatest final acts since Army of Darkness imo. 10/10 movie for me. Saw it twice in NY. I was at the premiere on the 28th and at the Friday night midnight showing. Were you there Friday night or Saturday night? Just curious if we were in the same theater
I saw a 7pm showing at the New Plaza theater on the UWS. Totally agree about the third act. I was still fully on board for the middle, but I get why some people weren't.
@@1pknail I wasn’t bored or anything during the middle, just wasn’t laughing quite as hard. The second time I saw it, the middle flew right by. Still a 10 for me regardless!
I saw the trailer for this film, and decided i had to watch it.
Obtained a copy, and watched it for the first time last night.
I'm a film collector and a large part of my collection is silent comedies.
Another significant portion is the cartoon shorts of Warner brothers, and MGM where I saw the comedic genius of Tex Avery.
What I saw last night was a brilliant example of that kind of over the top slapstick comedy.
It was a movie version of many beloved cartoons, Road Runner, Tom and Jerry, Sylvester and Tweety, and others.
I have not had this kind of laugh at a Hollywood comedy in 25 years.
A chuckle here and there, but not roaring with laughter like this.
This movie is an INSTANT cult classic, and we're going to be hearing about it for YEARS.
Saw this movie when the filmmakers came to my local theatre on the roadshow. Movie was delightful, as was its director and lead actor who tackled (I mean TACKLED) a beaver-costumed roadie within inches of me. Glad it’s gaining traction!
That sounds fun!
Another aspect of the film that I found impressive, was the musical soundtrack, and the sound effects. I believe credit should be given, due to the fact this this is primarily a silent film. This is a film I will watch more than once, and marvel at it's originality, and it's homage to slapstick, silent films, black and white films, and everything I had thought had gone away about film-making.
Would it be ok to watch it high (weed) or after a drink or 2? Looks like something i would be into but I drank some thc lemonade before Sorry to Bother You and my date and I were like WTF. ARE WE TRIPPIN OR IS THIS MOVIE TRIPPONG US OUT. Turns out it was both. I mean, still a great experience but i dont want it to be like watching Climax or insideout high. Yes. Inside oit tripped me tf out while high. I went into an existential semi-crisis lol
Makes me wonder if they know who Schaffrillas is, since I know about this movie because of him
This movie was great, but I agree they could have chopped off like 15-20 min to make it even better. I'd say a 9 still though.
I finally got to see this tonight and loved it. I agree with both of you, though lean towards Christy re the length. I'm right between you at an 8 - originality and creativity on the screen when we are drowning in super hero banality.
The 6 score is crazy talk lol. The ending alone should push that baby up to an 8 lol. I have the same critique of the film too. Way too repetitious until the gonzo ending which really brought it all together and was an excellent payoff.
I saw 10 mins and said I can only watch 30-45 mins of this. It should be 10 min sketches shown from time to time in a series or week day slot.
After watching the movie and LOVING it to pieces, this review from Christy reminds me a lot of her initial take on Everything Everywhere All At Once, another movie I couldn't stop thinking about.
Lake Michigan Monster was better, this goes on forever
Looks like a Looney Tunes live actions movie.
But looking at the clips you’ve shown, you can’t paid me to watch this.
Sorry Alonso, I am getting off the journey for this one. I’ll watch it if I’m babysitting or I’m held behind enemy line and tortured with this movie.
It is very silly.
Great movie, but it’s 10-20 minutes too long
Saw it at Fantasy Film Nights in Berlin a few weeks ago. Loved it!
Glad you had fun too!
I guess MIT is going to be calling Cheslik if they ever need more mascot costumes.
I cannot recommend this movie highly enough! I laughed so hard I lost my voice.
So glad you found it and had fun!
Hundreds of Beavers was wonderful, I saw it in the local repertoire theater and will be going back when it returns
So glad you found it and had fun!
I would probably pass on this, but I did watch "The Artist" which was so overrated. I'm not comparing the two of course but when you said it was silent "The Artist" and how much I disliked it popped in my head.
This is very different!
Yeah but The Artist took itself too seriously, this one couldn't be further from that.
@@servomoore I made it clear I wasn't comparing the 2
Don't pass on it. It's really hysterical. I'm not the biggest slapstick person, but after a half an hour this film gets really funny.
Thought the artist was quality myself 😉👍
So it's NOT a porno?
Just watched this movie in the Beverly theater in Las Vegas, from Looney tunes, Kung Fu Hustle and even the return of the Jedi!My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message and it's the most unique movie ever.
I was going to see this anyway, but now my curiosity is at a fever pitch. Could it really be true that, as Christy's numbers indicate, J. Lo's kitsch masquerading as art is superior to this actual work of art? I guess the only way to know is to buy a ticket!
I'm so in!
Can’t wait to see it. Was surprised to hear of its length
It is long.
This is a great find - looks like its bursting with creativity on a shoestring budget.
I just heard of this movie in this review, only to discover it played in my town LAST SUNDAY!!! only a mile from my apartment and I had no idea until now. I'm crying beaver tears...um, I mean, ...bitter tears of regret.😢
Oh no! Maybe it'll be near you again. Also it will start streaming sometime this spring.
Just saw The Frida Cinema, my favlrite local independent theater, has a showong April 7th! Ahhh ok I'm excited to go! Glad I caught this review beforehand
We love The Frida! Have fun.
Saw it at a film festival here in Germany, and I loved it! It's definitely 15-20 minuts too long and a bit repetitive in the middle. But overall this is fantastic!
Glad you saw it in such a fun setting!
Wow I forgot about this one its on my list. I know me and my best friend would enjoy this movie. Glad to see more people know about this.
Yes! Let us know what you think.
Only you guys would watch. Bless you .
Just saw this film at IFC in NY - cause of this review. So fun and sticks the landing!
So glad we could steer you in the right direction!
In the Buster Keaton mold? Buster Keaton had a very expressive face?? In his movies?? The guy known as "THE GREAT STONE FACE"??
We specifically referenced his ability at pratfalls and other elements of physical comedy, like Keaton, not his face. Thanks for watching!
@@BreakfastAllDay Along with the reference to pratfalls Alonzo
specifically mentioned his very expressive face a moment after he said he belonged to the same mold as Keaton.
A little awkward considering Keaton
was famous for being stone-faced.. In fact
Alonzo referenced his very expressive face right after
the reference to Keaton (and Lolyd) and then followed that with the reference to pratfalls and physical comedy.
Maybe you can accuse me of nitpicking, but if you doubt me about that check the video.
Saw this last November. Really enjoyed it. The screening I was in had a great atmosphere.
Sounds so fun with a big crowd!
@@BreakfastAllDay It was a festival crowd as well and they lapped it up haha
Great review. This is now my most anticipated movie. I hope I can purchase it in the UK at some point.
It will be streaming at some point according to the website! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for letting me know.
That's some title. 🤣
I found a screening and going to see it on the 1st 🤞
Woo hoo! Have a blast.
@@BreakfastAllDay Thanks!
Do you think this is a movie I could watch with my 7 year old son?
Maybe ... but it's going to look extremely different from the cartoons he's probably used to watching. Maybe that's a good thing, though! There is one scene involving a stripper pole, FYI.
I feel like you should see it first before you show it to a 7 year old.
There's nothing graphic, but there is some implied bunny humping and the fur trapper's daughter does a full (hilarious) stripper pole dance at one point. But nothing too crazy. A lot of great sight gags. Some pee and poop humor.
9.3...and then Christy comes up a 6? Wow.....
lovely
Wait, is this THE Jean Kayak?
I just saw it , or I should say part of it. I was out the of the cinema about 45 min. in thinking how can this keep going . I kept falling asleep unable to grasp the plot of anything. Totally bizarre. That being said the filming acting editing is epic ground breaking stuff. We will be hearing more about Hundreds of 🦫
