BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Movie Review | Kingsley Ben-Adir | Lashana Lynch

  • "Bob Marley: One Love" tells the story of the reggae legend, and two pivotal years in his life and career. But despite fine performances from Kingsley Ben-Adir and the always-fierce Lashana Lynch, the movie feels superficial as it hits all the usual music biopic tropes. Maybe we've just seen "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" too many times. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, written by Green & Zach Baylin and Terence Winter & Frank E. Flowers. In theaters now.

    Bob Marley was good friends with Mick Jagger - he's even listed in the cast credits, but his scenes were cut - their perspective on one another would have made a memorable cinematic experience.

      There's also a scene in which Bob Marley and his bandmates go see The Clash play in London. That's a connection that would have been fun to explore, too, given the reggae influence on a lot of Clash songs.

    As usual, right on, folks!! The epilogue features Marley bringing together on stage bitterly opposed white Jamaican leaders--probably one of Marley's greatest accomplishments--which goes unexplored??? How'd he pull that off? Also in the epilogue, TIME magazine's declaration that "Exodus" is one of the best albums in the 21st century. OK, fine. Anybody care to explain WHY? Curious minds wanna know. FYI A Canadian radio show had dialect experts talking about the acknkolwledged complications of dealing with the Jamaican Patois. Ironically, they gave Ben-Adir---a British-born Trinidadian--a passing grade, but failing marks to Lashana Lynch who is Jamaican born, despite her effective on-screen presence! Subtitles could have alleviated this but they're deemed as death to mainstream audiences. The builit-in "making off" business at the beginning of the film created unease which did not dissipate throughout the movie. Family presence softens the focus! (Pardon the pun! lol)

      Actually...Kingsley's mother was born in the UK to a Trinidadian family but his dad is White British. Lashana Lynch is born in the UK to Jamaican parents. White Jamaican leaders?
      Michael Manley is the son of a bi-racial man who gained independence from Britain. The airport in Kingston is named after him. Norman Washington Manley. Yes, Michael Manley's mom is White British, but being 25% black and 75% white, he would not be considered pure white....especially not in the USA with their one drop rule.
      Edward Seaga is not white either. He was born in Boston, USA to a Jamaican family of Syrian-Lebanese origin, before moving back to Jamaica as a 1 year old before renouncing USA citizenship in order to run for PM of Jamaica as you cannot have an additional citizenship if you want to be the Prime Minister.
      Or did you mean they were white in comparison the wider segment of Jamaican society?

    I wonder if there is a doc or biopic with the family's stamp on it that is brutally honest about the subject matter.
    Must be a tough situation for the filmmakers, because it's usually so many people, so many moving parts, and if you remove one problematic trait of the subject matter, it can have a massive ripple effect.

    This is a pretty honest and fair assessment. 15 min in I was already thinking it might not be good. Ray is the bar for me, so this let me down for sure. If I knew going into it that it focused on a few years of his life, I wouldn't have been a disappointed. From what i've seen, the family wanted to focus it around Exodus. Which know that, I understand why the movie is what it is.

    I enjoyed the movie as a Jamaican but what I think is that Ziggy missed the mark in explaining the background to foreigners who didnt understand the political atmosphere in Jamaica. At least have a dialogue about the situation, why it came about, what was the friction, how it affected the country. Xiggy was making a movie for people who already knew Bob Marley and not for people who didnt knew him much outside of his music.

But now I'll go back and read the Chris Blackwell memoir I won on Goodreads a while back. Good casting there even though I couldn't tell that's who it was until the credits. Having liked Reinaldo Marcus Green's previous work like Monsters & Men, King Richard but especially on Netflix's Top Boy & HBO's We Own This City, a little disappointing to see the critics' consensus on this movie :( Was having 4 different credited writers also an issue with the movie (Terence Winter, Frank E Flowers, Zach Baylin & RMG)?! Audience Score metrics seem to be really positive though; an A CinemaScore & 94% RT (4.6/5). Does seem like documentaries in general are still the way to go when it comes to Biopics!

    If you want an incredibly well-crafted story of the significance of Bob Marley, the novel A Brief History of Seven Killings is a great starting point. Now THAT could make a great film or TV series, if adapted well by a skilled director. There us an entire history of colonialism and economic exploitation of the Caribbeam that forms the backdrop of Bob Marley's life story. That story is complex and has rich material for a film. Too bad this film misses the mark!

    As a Jamaican American I really liked the movie. The movie focused on 1976-78; IT ACTUALLY SAYS THAT. But I can understand non Jamaicans not understanding why that period was so important in Jamaica & Marley life. Whats important is Jamaicans enjoyed it & appreciate it. If it was a movie about the 3 most important yrs of Elvis life; I got a feeling a lot more Americans would've enjoyed.

    😍We know so much, everything is available in newspapers, books, internet etc. Yet we want to know more in a way which we can regurgitate and assimilate to create awe.
    Lashana is British born and bred, not Jamaican born.
    Kingsley is British born and bred, never step foot in Trinidad where is grandmother is from.
    Michael Manley and Edward Seaga, two former Jamaican leaders are not white.
    Their ancestors are of European and various other racial groups.
    For some people, their identity maybe white but they carry the blood of different races.
    Michael Manley mixed race father made a famous speech in which he identified his mixed-race status.

    The movie concentrated on 4 aspects of his life... his already established popularity as a musician/singer/song writer, the attempted assassination on his life, the recording of the album Exodus and he and Rita's relationship. Everything else was just a flashback or a quick visit to the details of personal significance attributed during his existence.
    The problem with reviews such as this as they don't do any research before posting video's, they expect and demand a whole bloody backstory in a biopic movie, sure if it were a 4 hour long movie which had the financial support to extend production of which it didn't.
    You have to realize that this movie was made in collaboration with the Marley family and this is how they wanted their fathers story to be told, it is not a fan service movie nor one of political statement but a story about a man and his journey through life told from those who knew him best.

    • @mature1ca
      @mature1ca 4 місяці тому +1

      Many reviews I saw really wanted to details of the other women and wanted all that drama. They weren't interested in his militancy at all. They mainly wanted the salacious part of his life story. When that wasn't shown in great detail the gloves came off.

    • @jnnx
      @jnnx 4 місяці тому

      it literally is a “fan service” movie, in that it keeps out any difficulty or complexity of his life, and sanitizes his life in a way that makes the entire endeavor very shallow. I think the reviewers miss the mark on this one. For example you see his evolution in the Rastafari faith and the profound impact it had on him and you also see the troubling and deep unconscious (demons) he has with his biological father that columnated in him being adopted by the spirit of Selassie. It was not so important to show all his outside relationships (that's a story well known) , it's inferred throughout the movie in specific scenes and there is the scene of the argument with Rita outside the club/party in which it's stated explicitly. If you listen to Kinsgly, the lead actor, he wanted to get in to the psychology of Bob and how that formed his life and the creation of the Exodus album. I do agree it ended a little abruptly. However, the reviewers stated that they (movie makers) should have gone more in to what caused Bob to become this monumental figure. The question then becomes are western audiences ready to explore his vast Pan Africanism (Garvyism) and his contributions in the freedom fights, revolutions, against European colonialism in Africa during the 60's and 70's? His Rastafari beliefs, which was born from an interpretation of the Bible in reaction to the slave trade of Africans, was the driving force behind his life. The western audience is more comfortable with his One Love, Peace and Unity side. So if the western audience is not mature enough to explore those deep and profound beliefs then your are left with what you have. Think about it, Bob Marley said, and it's in the movie, that "all governments pan (on) de face ah de earth today is illegal." So are you the audience willing to flesh that out, the beliefs behind it and question your citizenship, allegiance to a government/country? Are you willing to go there? The vast majority of the people are not. Such examination by Bob is why he is what he has become today.

    look fair criticism about lighting black faces but you cant judge dune part 1 on that one scene, that may have been an artistic choice because at that point that character’s motives and allegiance is obscured and “in the shadow.” reserve your judgment for films where there is a consistent lack of effort put into lighting darker skin

    Some of the dialog was hard to understand because of the heavy accent .

      Well that lets me know the actors did their job right. Bob had a thick Jamaican accent its only right to portray the culture and language authentically.

    It is a great movie, for you critics take a break on this . Bob Marley is the people’s champion so I salute everyone who produced this movie. It was just a very short period of his amazing life! No one was interested in the political crap! I hope it sells well too prove that people can rise from poverty and have a heavy impact on the world.Salute!

      But much of Bob Marley's artistry was inspired by the political strife of his country, don't you think? Appreciate you watching our review and glad you enjoyed the film so much.

    Terrible movie. Is anyone going to mention they cast a model-looking Brit with zero resemblance to Marley? He didn't feel like Marley or even try to channel him. Since they cast an unknown, they had an infinite pool to get the casting right. The film just meanders. A series of montages and random scenes that don't add up to anything. There's no dramatic arc. I did like King Richard, but this is awful. The funny thing is that I see art movies all the time with dull and meandering structures like this one that get high praise. This one deservedly got bad reviews. The reason is that since this is a Hollywood biopic, critics know there's nothing deeper to it. But when a boring and/or confusing art movie comes along, critics don't quite know what to attack. Perhaps there's something there that the lay man can't discern. As a friend once wisely said, critics will tear apart movies they can understand, but will praise movies they don't.

    I wanted to see if. But when I found out you didn't have any of his actually children in it. You didn't have one of his sons play him it definitely put me off from actually seeing it. I'm married a Jamaican born n raised in Jamaica. He says he not watching the movie either...

      Don't cut off your nose to spite your face. The success of the movie could open the doors for the Jamaican actors that were featured in the film and might make other big studios take an interest in creating more Jamaican stories. Your reasoning is very foolishness and short sighted. Look at the bigger picture.

    The issue here is we are caught within a gravitational well so deep there is a singularity forming. I had the pleasure of listening to Marlon James’ A Brief History of Seven Killings. We get more of the world [politics, Rasta, Jamaica, CIA, folks that made it out, MANY that didn’t, the few that could not] this movie could not cover. The books spans the 1970’s to 1990’s.

    Maybe on a second watch he will pick up on the details for the questions he asked in the beginning. Second, before watching a movie and giving a review listen to the press junkets. Also, there was script in the beginning of the movie that explained what was going on politically.

    For all those criticizing what was left out of this film.
    They chose to concentrate on just a very few years. Rather than criticize the filmmakers for what they left out of Bob's life (which probably would have resulted in a much much longer film that would have severely taxed the viewers attention span if they had gone into detail) I think it's better to critique exactly what was on the screen. Some find the results wonderful, others not so great.

    • @jnnx
      @jnnx 4 місяці тому

      No critic found the results “wonderful”, it’s literally a puff piece put together by the family to sell his catalogue to a younger audience. It avoids asking any real deep and meaningful questions about his life.

Many lies in this MOvie, Turn your lights donw low is dedicated to the Damian's Marley Mother Cindy Breakspeare, and in this movie when Bob stay in London, he met many times the Clash, and never appear! Please, i can continue with many many errors in screenplay, but i want stop me here, but please Hollywood Produce a Kolossal about Bob Marley's Life and start Nine Miles! Use to the referement Book ''catch a fire'' a book wrote by Timothy White, everything its on that book, Everything! ANd dont tell me time for a movie its not enough to chronichles all lifes of Bob, because i Remember movie Biopic like Ray for Ray charles and i can continue!
