Paul Anka is one of the greatest musical talents the US has ever been privileged to know. I'm 73 and still finding out he wrote things I have known for years without knowing who wrote them.
canada DONT FORGET
he was born and raised in Ottawa Canada
@@alandavey3010calm down. In all fairness, he did move to Los Angeles when he was fifteen, and has lived most of his life in the US, and he is a US citizen
nonsense...he's a minor talent
@@jadezee6316 SO am I but my net worth isn't $80million.
I was born in the second half of the 50s so I grew up listening to this music. The 1950s -1970s produced the best collection of music in history. We had great music and cool cars.
"My Way" is a song popularized in 1969 by Frank Sinatra set to the music of the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed by Jacques Revaux with lyrics by Gilles Thibaut and Claude François[1][2] and first performed in 1967 by Claude François. Its English lyrics were written by Paul Anka and are unrelated to the original French song.
Very cool, what an incredible guy, to have been in show biz for 60 years!
Anka wrote English lyrics for Sinatra's signature song. The French " Comme d'Habitude " contained the melody.
Very few people know this. There's a french movie that tells the story
Correct!
@@jorgesilen1824 every single fan of Sinatra knows it....
“My Way” is actually a French song that Anka put English lyrics to called “Comme D’Habitude.” The other authors are Francois, Revaux, and Thibault.
Yes, it's often overlooked and people assume that Paul wrote the melody , Regards to you
Right. To say that he wrote My Way certainly is not correct. Any more than saying the Johnny Mercer wrote Autumn Leaves. Both Anka and Mercer wrote brilliant English lyrics to existing French songs.
True, but the song in its English version is known world-wide so Jacques Revaux who composed the music can be very grateful. I don't know of anyone outside of French speaking countries who knew it was he who composed the music, Claude François and Gilles Thibaut writing the lyrics. Personally, knowing both versions very well, I much prefer "My Way".
The real author of the versión popularized by Sinatra is Paul Anka, the french song has othe lyrics
@@iangallager4091I was born in France; but from Puerto Rico, and im a musician, nobody knows the french song, and Paul Ankas; made famous by Sinatra, is known throughout the world
Paul Anka is a Canadian gem to be sure.!!🇨🇦🎶💕👏🥳
Libanese origine....
Paul Anka, a Canadian and always will be. Fantastic performer, love to watch him perform with one of his daughter's. Really enjoy listening to him speak and talk about is work acquittances truly a humble man, his parents well done keeping him grounded. What a creation, a master piece.
Paul anka is great ..in his voice resonate the middle East....Paul Anka and elvis are the two who ignited energy....Thank you Paul and Elvis for the thrills.
I was the set decorator on the Paul Anka show shot in Vancouver in the 80’s and during rehearsal Paul was seated at our clear plexiglas piano about to go over Put Your Head on My Shoulder.
He looks over and says we need a stand-in, looking straight at me “kid come sit down”, as embarrassed as I was then, now I think it would be cool to have a copy of that rehearsal video.
Hold me til the morning comes with Peter Cetera is one of Paul Anka’s greatest songs. It’s simply amazing.
What a great storyteller Mr. Anka is!
I saw him at the Ottawa Ex one summer when he was playing to his hometown crowd. He had the audience in the palm of his hand. He was first first big star from Ottawa and is definitely the most enduring. Bravo!
YES ... a true blessing to us from Canada ... Thank you for having him on your show ... he is a historic gem 💎 ❤ 🎵🎤🌹
Paul Anka, a true gem. A true genius. Thank you….
Wow, nice job interviewing Paul. What a score! This guy remains current as much today as in 1957, how cool is that!
I used to cook for Paul, all the time in the 80s, when he was performing at the Golden Nugget.
My favorite Paul Anka ere is the 70’s. Having my baby, a one man woman, etc. BEST EVER!
Paul has truly left us great quality music. From his teen years, to big band, to contemporary work.
Costaria de conhecer êle meu sonho impossível so um milagre mesmo meu sonho de adolle
adolescência hojje estou com 75 anos mas êle continua meu idolo e meu Rei ❤❤❤
Two minutes in and I finally noticed all those gold records on the wall and the other awards too. I remember when Paul Anka was on every radio.
i'm canadian and i'm 62 , i've followed paul anka a long time and love the guy cause of his song writing ability , but it really breaks my heart to out right lie and say that he came up with this song when it was done by that french dude in france first. It just surprises me that he did not just out right say oh well this song was originally done in french but i just put the lyrics in english but in my way (pardon the pun). I thought he'd of been more honest than that. but yes of course the song was a smash success
I'm now 74. In 1968 while I was attending a small 800 student junior college. I was a student light & sound technician. Paul came to perform, yea wow! I was asked to assist. Now, I find out he was working at that time on one of the greatest songs of all time. That's icing on my cake!
This man is a Master at his craft Proud to call him a fellow Canadian
Thanks for this. You're right that a lot of younger people don't realize his impact on music. I had no idea he had a solo career or wrote "My Way". 😊 Really glad he embraced social media and is enjoying a 2nd wind in his incredible career! 🎶
he stole my way from a french singer
@@jadezee6316 Paul anka met with the French composers to get publishing rights before he even wrote the lyrics. Be against disinformation, bud.
Plus, the lyrics and the whole interpretation of the song is completely his own.
Great respect and appreciation for Paul. So many years of great entertainment.
I love Paul Anka all my life ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Mr Anka is indeed a legend
Great talent, a great guy. Thanks for all the wonderful music!
❤🌹🌹❤️Back in the days I was a fan of Paul Anka Good to see him again
Paul Anka so sharp. A super guy no Hollywood HYPE. Love the man. WAHOO !
It might be Paul Anka´s english lirics, but it´s they are based on a french song. ""My Way" is a song popularized in 1969 by Frank Sinatra set to the music of the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed by Jacques Revaux with lyrics by Gilles Thibaut and Claude François and first performed in 1967 by Claude François. Its English lyrics were written by Paul Anka and are unrelated to the original French song".
What a icon Mr. Anka is. I don’t know of anyone today with similar multiple talents.
I was only 7 years old when I heard from neighbors' vacuum tube radios his first hit - Diana, and instantly I followed his hits after hits here in the Philippines. And when I courted in 1965 my first love named Nilda from our place, I lent her Paul's 15 Big, Big Hits vinyl records that I still keep.
That was a fabulous interview. Very interesting. Thank you very much.
How refreshing it was that the interviewer let him speak without continuous stupid interruptions.
One of my first records was with paul anka. It was a vinyl single with the song Diana, flip side was gamble with love. I absolutly loved it. ❤
I watched all his shows at Sun City for his entire stay.
The curtains on stage was drawn and his piano was raised way uo high. As he started playing the piano was lowered whilst the curtains openend slowly. Much respect!
When my time is up I want My Way sung at my funeral but no rush to kick the bucket
His music helped my generation, 1949 birthday which was similar to Holly, Everly Bros. and The Matrix and, The Beatles. Soothing, gentle, and basically Prozac on 33 rpm Excellent interview, and Mr. Anka, thank you beyond words.
I can't believe I've been on this planet sixty-two years and didn't know Anka wrote My way! Incredible. Such an amazing song-along with the rest of his vast body of incredible work.
I liked his songs in my high school years in the late 50s/early 60s. Still remember some lyrics, "I am just a lonely boy, lonely and blue........................." "I am so young, you are so old......" Time flies.
I loved when Sinatra would introduce "My Way" and say it was written by Paul Anker!
I remember Paul Anka from the 50s. My dad had one of his albums. On the cover of it was Paul sitting on top of the world. My dad was from Canada. That's probably why he had the album. I remember only 2 records in the house: Elvis Presley's Hound Dog (a 45) and Paul Anka's album.
When my wife was pregnant with our first son (1977), I made a mix-tape of songs for her. One of those songs was "Having My Baby". Even now, that song takes me back to that time.
Some thought of it as corny but io me it’s a timeless classic. Like yourself floods my mind with beautiful memories.
Paul Anka is a legend.
Didnt Anka write the theme song to Carsons show? I saw an old Danny Thomas show where Anka was just a kid but he could really sing. Wow, what stories this guy could tell!!
Wonderful clip, thank you so much!
Loved the the interview ❤🤗👍👏🏻👏🏻❤️
Wow he looks great. Had no idea he wrote Carson's theme song and My Way. Look at all the freaking gold records ..Paul Anka, from my generation when music was real and had soul ..
Hey, great interview! I love these “behind the scenes” interviews.
Love you Paul, thank for the gift of your music.
Paul Anka is legend!
When I was in my teens working at a typical seaside shop in Atlantic City NJ on the Boardwalk across from the then famous Steel Pier where Paul Anka was the feature performer. I guess he was taking a walk. I was in the open booth window out front selling jewelry and doing the engravings on the bangles. Paul walks up in a clamor or fans and has me engrave a girls name on it for him. That was special for me and the memory came back to me. Now I am 81 y o. I didn't know he was Canadian. That explains all the Canadians that were there also at the time. I thought that they were a bit 'crazy' at the time. I received a number of marriage proposals from them. :) I have enjoyed thinking back on this today
Thanks for posting, really you need to have an interview for at least 2 hours with this giant of a musical talent that is going into it's 8th decade!! Going to check this Lp out!!! Hope it's on vinyl as well as cd?
wonderfully elequent in simple speech...no wonder he's a great poet
he has never written any poetry....and while a great lyricist can be considered poetic...anka IS NOT a great lyricist
Don't know if I would have recognized Paul Anka. He's changed quite a bit.
Wonderful interview!
No Doubt. Paul Anka is a true legend in the music industry for so many decades. Please feel free to correct me but based on my knowledge, "My Way" famous hit was also written by a French Singer / Entertainer by the name of: Claude Francois who passed away in 1978. The song version in French language was titled: "Comme D'Habitude". Thank you !!!
Bravo Paul! Great to see you again. Stay healthy brother
The Best! Thanks.
PAULI YOU ARE THE BEST....I USED TO SEE HIM IN HIS TV SHOW IN THE 80...✌
Loved the story
What a joy and a blessing to get to hear and "meet" this artist in this way. I didn't know who Paul Anka really is, what kind of mind, personality, character- and now I do. I predate him and remember when he came along. Just thought he was a another Jersey boy Catholic so-so, like Bobby Vinton. He is on another level. Hope he finds the Lord, because the Pope and Mary will not take away your sin.
Mr. Anka is one of the greatest artists of all time. As a 69 years old, I’ve been listening to his music for as long as I remember.
In today’s age when many “weirdos” are called artists and noise is called music, it is refreshing to know that he is still putting out new material and inspiring the young generations.
10 years ago I discovered a 7 years old Norwegian girl named Angelina Jordan who was inspired by Anka’s music among others and has been introducing many of these great artists to the new generations.
Here is a performance by her of “My Way” when she was 11 years old. No fancy equipment, no autotune, just beautiful voice full of emotions. ua-cam.com/video/JTSyLwDCXRI/v-deo.html
Thank you Mr. Anka for inspiring the likes of Angelina Jordan so we can continue to listen to what music was meant to be, a warm blanket for the heart and soul.
dude for your age you have sure missed the greats of music....and what is this obsession you have with Jordan?.it doesnt sound healthy
There is plenty of good music released every year.
Always nice to see a fellow Angelina fan giving her to the audience who will appreciate her. We had many generational artists pre and post Beatles, but there are in my estimation, very few now. But Angelina will be one.
Oh wow! 0:49 I had such a crush on him back then. My major teen-age crush was Jimmy Clanton, but Paul was close behind. Our singers were soooooo cute back then. And well groomed. Early Paul Anka would have made sure his hair was neatly combed for this interview. BTW, no girl could refrain from swooning anytime "Put Your Head on my Shoulder" came on the radio. Sigh ....
OMG! Jimmy Clanton "Venus in Blue Jeans" I had not thought about him or that song in...well decades. I understand he's 84 an still preforming.
One of the BEST ,,,,,god bless 🇬🇧
Paul also wrote ‘She’s A Lady’ for Tom Jones.
Paul Anka u r one of the best. Love you creations thank you.
What a talent. I'm 74 and I appreciate the writers behind the songs. I didn't know he wrote the theme for the tonight show. I just heard a song he did in a show. "Crazy Love" . He knows the business, wheres his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame. He's earned it.
God bless you Paul Anka,we miss you👑🙏🏼💕🎶🎶🎶🎶
I vaguely remember parts of "My Way" (I'm 39), so I had to look up the lyrics after reading some of the comments. The last part of the song is... telling.
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way
Yes, it was my way
Not not naught
And knowing the original song "Comme d'habitude", the words in English having nothing to do with the French version.
dude..the truth of this song is Sinatra never liked it and music critics thought it vulgar and crass....Sinatra would only sing it occasionally and in the middle of his set...it was the audience that liked it and Frank being the great performer finally made it his closing number for most of his concerts.....proof he was never "into"..it comes directly from his own mouth..."jeez, i hate this song"....plus it is the song that he forgot the lyrics to more than any of the next 5 songs he would ever perform
@@jadezee6316 Sinatra was nasty old curmudgeon
He wrote "Puppy Love" if I remember correctly. The Celtic Thunder covered it and the kid who sung it was so cute.
Hello how're you doing?
Great show
What was flying about back in those days was that Paul wrote My Way for HIMSELF. Sinatra found out, put pressure on Paul through his 'contacts' and eventually Paul had to agree.
From the wall behind him you can see the success he's had.
Paul Anka is an American gift to the world of music.
No he's a Canadian gift.
@@rayfournier2806 Who put a French song into English.
A lot of older guys who were alive in the 50s and 60 though Paul Anka was one of the luckiest guys around. He was dating Annette Funicello and she was so very attracted to him. If we could have only ... He wrote "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" for Annette.
Paul anka is a sweetheart. His soul is so vibrant and sweet it just bursts out and fills the room when he sings and he genuinely feels so much joy singing you can feel it through a screen. Love his music! Thank you paul for your great comtribution to the classic music hall of fame and your sound is timeless and touches generations far ahead and will continue to inspire generations to come. T😊
Excellent... What a Good Man...
Love you PAUL!!!
Mr. Anka made a serious bid to place a Canadian Football League team in New York in 1971. That was before the USFL. Given New York is close to Toronto and Montreal, that was a lot better idea than Shreveport and San Antonio. If that had flown, it may have changed football, and history. Paul has had an interesting life.
Great interview. He grew up well.
Paul’s version of ‘My Way’ was very good. He did a cable tv special thirty years ago, HBO or Showtime perhaps.🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
Such talent and what a humble man
I grew up in the 70s, so I remember Paul Anka. I didn’t know he wrote “I Did it My Way.” I always considered that song to be the devil’s theme song. I am praying that Someone more impt than Frank Sinatra will touch Paul Anika’s life!!
Wow 😮 that's amazing to you and you still look you and attractive. I'm Franklin Stephen from Tennesse... where are you located?
great Paul... ❤
❤Paul... you are an amazing person... Sing... you make us happy with your songs and your wonderful smile... ❤
True Class!
Hi Mr. Anka, I am so glad to see you. I grew up with your music and the more I learn the better I like you. I am also a @RitaPavone fan love watching you two sing together . Much love ❤️
Wow, did not know all that, good to see him again.
Legend
Great story
I LOVE PAUL ANKA
Fantastic interview by Metaxas; glad I found it. He let Paul talk and why not? Anka's a fuckin' living legend in the music industry, and a great storyteller! Happy to see he made it through Covid okay because he's not a young man anymore. Still sharp as ever, though, it seems.
legend
My understanding is he also wrote the theme/lead in for the Tonight show with Johnny and made major bank from that.
So many people still criticise Paul's writing of My Way for Mr Sinatra ... he never professed to writing the music, only ever the lyrics, beautiful, sensitive lyrics that stand the test of time. Love him and his songs ❤
Anka has great lyrics and songs that will last what ever if forever , i like him singing with his daughter, and i always remember as a kid the song from KODAK film commercial , ( the times of your life) still makes me cry, and of course MY WAY, who sang it the best ? FRANK or ELVIS?
Huge HUGE talent.
❤❤❤❤❤
Interesting.
