According to Roberta Flack, Clint Eastwood had asked her to do a song for his movie, Play Misty For Me. So she recorded this song and played the record for him. She told him that it was probably too slow. But, he liked it as it was. And the rest is history.
Did not know that!!! Thank you, Scott.🧡
Eastwood has not been my favorite guy of late but he knows his music and especially jazz. This song just dares you to go even slower, hold the notes longer. The studio version is slower than this! So beautiful tho.
@@loadedorygun What did Eastwood do to lose your praise?
@@shihyuchu6753 probably let people know he wasn’t a democrat!
@@roymoore3156 Ah! How terrible!!
Huge, huge hit. She won 2 Grammys two years in a row, for this heavenly song, and for "Killing Me Softly". I have always thought she was in the top echelon of female singers from the era I grew up in, the magical 1970's. And oh, what a year in music was 1972. A Tar Heel by birth, I have always had a special love for this woman and her amazing voice. Thank you for the joy and memories, Roberta....
I tear up everytime I see and hear this beautiful woman sing this unbelieveable love song. I think of my wonderful wife of 66 years.
Just incredible! "Killing me softly" is just as good
People hear Roberta's voice and don't realise that she was a trained pianist too who won a full scholarship to University. And when she first heard "Killing Me Softly" she was able to transcribe the music as she heard it. Evidently, she's 85 years old now but from the recent photo I saw of her with Lori Liebowitz she is, incredibly, more beautiful than ever.
I always think that this love song was written by Peggy Seeger (Pete Seeger's sister) to Ewan MacColl, but it was the other way round. The strange thing is that Ewan did not write love songs, he was a political folk singer as was Peggy and besides, he was married to another woman (Jean Newlove) at the time with whom he had a daughter, Kirsty MacColl who you may have heard of. He also wrote "Dirty Old Town" and the original "Radio Ballads."
This was a great choice, thanks to Craig Aust for choosing it.
Thank you!
Simply one of the most beautiful songs EVER WRITTEN AND PERFORMED. HEAVEN SENT.
I met my wife 40 years ago in high school at a dance. I was 18 and she was 16. She was the only one in color. Everything else was gray black and white. We only danced with each other, totally in love and mesmerized instantly. I got her number and asked her out the next morning and we've been madly in love ever since. We were each other' s first and only. Still make love every day 2-3 times. Best friends. I cry when I hear this song and my throat is in a knot.
Good Lord her tone in perfection!!!! No auto tune, just absolute smooth as butter. This is LIVE!!!!!!! She is unreal.
Roberta and Donny Hathaways 'The closer I get to you' is sublime. When they talk of Whitney as 'the voice' I always think of the way that Roberta, Gladys, Patti and many others are sadly overlooked.
As long as we are alive, so too will her music be cherished and loved. Time treats everything and everyone with a sadness colored brush.
I Absolutely Love Hearing Any Duet She Does With Donny Hathaway! So Beautiful. ❤❤❤
No comparisons neccesary, theyre all great and nobody is the one 'Voice'
I hear you Harry. Like the trembling heart of a captive bird. Oh my Lord. Melts me.
The first time ever I heard this song, I was in high school, and the teacher played music while we took tests, and this was among the songs, and I immediately fell in love with the song and the teacher. Turns out it was from a local girl, here in North Carolina, where Coltrane also grew his soul. And what a beautiful face on Roberta! This was a brilliant and perfect choice. This is quite possibly my favorite love song of all time. I took up guitar a few years back and love the chords that make up this song. Lisa Gerrard/Hans Zimmer's beautiful "Now We are Free" share a few of the same chords, as I recall. Brought me to tears. We need more tenderness in this world. I miss it.
May sound crazy , but I use this as a praise song to Jesus and I always feel the Holy Spirit encompass me. So amazing.
@@sageparsely2365 What a beautiful insight! I will upgrade my way of thinking about this already great masterpiece. It's a gift that keeps on giving.
Her "Killing Me Softly with His Song" and "The Closer I Get to You" (with Donny Hathaway) are next for you!!
Don't forget Jesse.
When this came out I was heavily into Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, etc, and this song blew me away.
Such a sweet, powerful and soulful voice. Wonderful and moving lyrics. 'heart of a captive bird' This is the best by an angel. (she is classically trained for piano)
She has such a beautiful voice
Her accomplishments on the piano are top notch, all the way from Outstanding Academic prestige to small smoky clubs. Here right hand fills are perfect
The song was written by famous English folk singer Ewan MacColl for his second wife, Peggy Seeger, sister of Pete Seeger, who was also a folksinger (late 1950s). It's a bit scandalous since they were both married to other people at the time.
Irish singer Christy Moore has done an absolutely beautiful version of this, too. It's sort of amazing to me that the same person wrote this AND "Dirty Old Town" (great version by The Pogues) and "Ballad of Accounting" (see Karan Casey's version).
I was 12 when this song came out . . . and it made me begin to think that “love” was far more than holding hands 😉
It really is a Master Piece and that performance was amazing....
I love this song. I appreciate how she takes her time with each word. It makes me feel like the music is reaching out and enveloping. Wonderful pick. What you said was so true Harri. I am so fortunate to have that "one". 36 years on the 10th.
Killing me softly is another BEAUTIFUL song from Roberta Flack!
Roberta Flack's Killing me softly and The first time ever are both covers.
Great song and a great performance. I normally prefer the studio version on these reactions but I have to say she really outdid herself here. Her vocal talent is simply amazing. You must also react to her version of Killing Me Softly. It is just as beautiful.
Love the studio version so much more!! Haunting!
There is a live version of her and Peabo Bryson singing "tonight I celebrate my love". You will have to check that out too.
The absolute epitome of a love song sung by a never-matched voice.
Her voice is like liquid warm honey.
Am glad you found this version too! One of my all time favorite songs. Nice review, as usual!!!
Roberta was a great pianist too, but hhe song is all about the passionnin our heart
This is such an exquisitely beautiful performance. There are no words! Thank you so much Craig! 🌺✌️
Your welcome!
She has the most incredible voice and is an excellent pianist to boot. And yes, this is one Beautiful love song.
When i was a child thought she was just someone my parents liked. Now i realize she is Stunning!
Harri, you hit the nail on the head when you were talking about the experience we've all felt. You described to a tee exactly how I felt when I first saw my wife 52 years ago. Within a week we were talking about who we'd invite to our wedding and here we are still!
Here again is one of those timeless melodies paired with a transcendant vocalist of which the 70's are so chocked full of these. This is up there as one if the greatest single songs ever performed.
Most beautiful song ever. I've read that this song is actually a Scottish poem.
Certainly one of the most beautiful voices ever. Give me chills.
*_And the first time ever I kissed your mouth_*
*_I felt the earth move in my hand_*
*_Like the trembling heart of a captive bird_*
*_That was there at my command, my love_*
- you cant get more poetic than that
I think God meant Roberta to sing this song, one ofvthe most beautiful ever written. Again, not to belabor it, a 70s song. Damn, what a time to be young and alive.
she has the voice of an angel
Far and away the most beautiful song ever written. I will say it is strange for someone to actually change the words to such a popular song. But still beautiful
A superb performance!
I still get goosebumps to this day when I hear this song. ❤
Harri this is diamonds in your ears!
Oh, you really should have listened to the studio version, it’s just her voice and a little piano, her voice soars and is fragile at the same time, it far outshines this version.
Written by British folk singer Ewan McColl for his lover, later his wife, Peggy Seeger.
One of my very favorites
Song of the year 1972, and she followed that up with Killing Me Softly in '73. Hell of a run.
Oh man. Such an emotional song.
I adore Roberta Flack. This is a fantastic performance. Greay choice Craig and well done Sir Harri.
Thanks!
Isn't she just lovely,..so elegant,.like fine porcelain, the passion of what she sings is in the lyrics,.but she delivers it ohh so sweetly,..quietly,..softly,..no boisterous, loud declaration,..just a stillness,..quiet,..delivery,..when I first heard Sade`, they compared her, labeled her as a "torch" singer,..like Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn,..but maybe Roberta can also be in that category,..they all had this soft,.quiet way about them,..even when singing about the most passionate things,..low and quiet,..and ohh so elegant,..highly respected performers,..that endure,..do keep going,..love your reactions,..do if you haven't, check out the work she did with Donny Hathaway,.."For All We Know, Where Is The Love(so love that one),..Godspeed, Peace ✌
I am always reminded of the day my daughter was born when I hear this. she is now about to graduate college.
Craig Aust, you chose, in my opinion, one of the truly great vocalists and song of the 70's. It is a timeless romantic classic. I would put this performance right up there with Bobby Hatfield's (of the Righteous Brothers) singing of Unchained Melody. I have never seen this spectacular and mint condition recording. Where on Earth did you locate this recorded performance? Bravo!!
Thanks! Harry chose the video.
There's other versions of this, but Roberta's is the best. The first cut is the best!!
Perfection!
Killing me Softly is another amazing song by her
Roberta Flack's Killing me softly and The first time ever are both covers.
Written in the 50s by folk singer Ewan McColl (father of the late Kirsty McColl) for his then to be wife and folk singer Peggy Seeger, it was a popular song on the folk circuit for many years.
He apparently didn't like any of the cover versions of his song as he saw the song as more personal to him and Peggy Seeger
Harri, thanks for this. Ive not seen this performance, and have loved this song since i was a boy (13). Its one of the most romantically charged songs. You, sir, are a hopeless romantic, and it pours out of your being via your words. Another great video.
I am really enjoying your reactions. I enjoy reactions of those who haven't heard the music, so to feel what the observer is feeling as they listen. Especially when they come upon parts that move me as I listened. I wish most reaction videos wouldn't stop the songs going through to give commentary, because for me, that takes so much away from what is to come as the song goes on. , But the way you express what you feel in the words that you do sometimes make up for it. Thank you for your videos. And YES,, this song does remind me of that one person that causes this song to move me even deeper emotionally when I hear it!!
Sublime... breathtaking perfection.
I adore this song and the version you found is amazing. ❤
What a gift, thank you Harri. 👍🏽😁
Wonderful memories. This was my first gf's fav sing,
Do you react to anything other than pure gold ? Keep em coming bruv Great reaction as always 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Great song and artist!
Oh a beauty
1 great voice.
This song was written in 1957 by British singer Ewan MacColl for his wife and singer Peggy Seeger whose brother was the famous American folk singer and song writer Pete Seeger.
Clint Eastwood paid her $2,000 to use it in the movie. It ended up winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Billboard ranked it as the number one Hot 100 single of the year for 1972
Roberta Flack has such a beautiful voice. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was used in the 1971 Clint Eastwood film "Play Misty For Me". Roberta had a lot of great hits in the 70's such as "Killing Me Softly With His Song", "Feel Like Makin' Love" & some great duets with Donny Hathaway "Where Is The Love" & "The Closer I Get To You".
Loved Play Misty for me.
A beautiful reaction
Harri, you are the best!
The enduring, transfomative power of music, the ULTIMATE ART FORM.
If song doesn't move you to the brink of tears, well, you have no heart. Thank you Harri for bringing back a song I have long forgotten about.
One of the most beautiful voices ever. Such a beautiful song.
This woman was something else man she was great I grew up listening to listening to her I don't know how old you are but you know I'll be 63 next month in May the 2022 I mean she was a queen of soul man one of them I mean man
Amazing voice
In my dreams I sing like her. Listen to the studio version....its transcendent
Unknown to even most Roberta Flack fans there was a B side song on the original 45 of “the first time.” It was called Tradewinds. I used to listen to it over and over on a jukebox in a coffee shop near me. I can’t find a live recording, so the studio version will have to suffice.
Agreed. One of the greatest lyric ever penned. Fabulous version by a amazing artist. George Michael covered this as only he could. His version is diamonds in my ears Harri !
Roberta Flack singing this song is simply perfection.
Roberta aslways had a beautiful voice
This song was my parents' song together... and weird, I was born about 9 months after it became very popular... hmmm
Anthony, you may just have a twin. Just ask my twins
@@davebzen795 lol
Just beautiful. I’ve always loved her. Her voice is wonderful.
Remember no auto tuning when the song was recorded. This won Grammy song of the year and " Killing me Softly " the year after making her win back to back Grammys in 1972 & 3 for song of the year.
This is an older song, written by Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger.
What a magnificently beautiful performance.
You have one of the best female vocalists here I got to enjoy her music in the 70s as a child. Once again, i firmly believe the best female singers came out of the 70s. Streisand started in the 60s, but her success exploded in the 70s. I'm blessed to have been alive in the 70s to enjoy this music!😎👍
Harri: thank you so much for not only finding this live version, but for your heartfelt and sincere reaction. And you are so right when you say that it is a spiritual awakening we have as we drift along to Roberta's endless yearnings for all those we love or have loved.
This is a fabulous piece of music! Love Roberta Flack. Your reaction was right on.
She is Amazing.
A beautiful genius!
Flawless voice.
Nothing but class , she is truly one of the greats
For sure one of the most beautiful songs of all time.
Lovely. I would put Roberta on par with Nina Simone here. My favorite memory of this song is of my youngest maternal uncle playing it on his new record player in the late 70s.
Incredible song.
Incredible performance!
This song came from a traditional folk song from some Western country. Thst was what I heard.
The song was played in the film Play Misty For Me starring Clint Eastwood as a deejay. He was chased by an obsessive radio fan. Just the opposite of thr beauty of the lyrics. Neverthelexs it came from a traditional folk song. I think it is a mother seeing her own baby's face.
Roberta lost the grammy in 1970 to the song from Olivia Newton John. The presentation award in 1970 for Best Album is in UA-cam. Like I said Olivia Newton John won.
Nice job Harri. A high-school dance favorite by the the beautiful pitch perfect voice of Flack
W O W !
Such perfect pitch and control. Wow!
Love her voice
Absolutely one of the finest recordings ever made, of any song. I got to know her from Radio 15, BOGOTÁ ....early 1973. A lot of great music from that time period, is still flying on American airwaves as we speak.
Listen to the studio version.
Vocally this version equals the studio version. The only thing that bothered me at the beginning were some of the timing changes of the lyrics. One of the reasons why I don't ever listen to live versions is because they usually change things from the original song.
