I had the interview of my life this week and used the mini-story technique. I got the promotion and was told my interview stood out from all the others. Thank you for posting this video!
Mike Mcnab that’s amazing! Thanks for sharing and congratulations! 🎉🍾
Let’s hope they don’t check out this video🤣
Congratulations!

God I hate that I have to act like this in order to get a job. It doesn't feel authentic and it's so hard to get over it. Why does the world has to be so fake, I just want to help people, why do I have to be like this in order to get money to be able to live
Hi there! No doubt interviews are tough and you have to put on your best self to land the job. But you can still totally be yourself. It will come through in your interview. Good luck!
@@petelee2477 it's simple and brilliant
Same, I'm practicing for an interview right now and it's sort of depressing how different I need to speak and act.
Because that's how things go. You have to know what to say and when to say it and not just say whatever comes to mind immediately.
@@petelee2477 Not everyone is cynical and negative. Honestly- you are being asked to put on your best face, but that doesn't mean you have to be fake. I am also a recruiter, and I totally think that it's possible to balance this as Heather has said.
Watched this the night before an interview for my dream job, got a call today saying i got the job!
No way! That’s amazing. Way-to-go.
Wow!
How's the job been?
hope it’s all going welll
Awesome
Me watching this an hour before my interview 👁👄👁
So did u get it?
Bruhh same lol
Haha! I think you will need more than an hour to prepare this before the actual interview!
At least I know I will take days. I will edit my answers and scenarios many times
Samee😭
Same here 🙃
College Grad ‘20! This helped me land my first Accounting job ! Thank you 🦋
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing. I wish you all the best.
That’s fire
Accounting whoop whoop. Great job! I have an interview today in about an hour
Employer: "Why do you want to work here?"
Me: I'm gonna be honest, I didn't even know this company existed until I started applying for jobs.
You should look into the company and decide that you want to work there based on your research. Why would you even think about saying that?
@@Girlhead Pretty sure he's joking. I doubt he would actually say that. But the statement is true for many.
@@DANGJOS Yes, you are right - Nikolas probably spoke in jest. However, given the current unemployment situation in the US and across the globe I suspect that people will take what they can get. I really do hope that we try to improve things for those who want to work but just can't find a job. I would like to see more investment in green energy, recycling and use of technology with well-paid jobs available in those sectors. I think that good quality apprenticeships are the key to the unemployment pandemic.
@donald johnson I work for a non-profit and I can tell you that is not true.
@donald johnson Go ahead- what do you have to say about non-profits? My point stands that not everyone works just for money.
I tend to stumble in interviews because when I panic my mind goes blank, but a very good tool I’ve found is to allow myself time to think. I think people sometimes force themselves to speak when they panic because they don’t want to seem like they don’t have a good answer, and they end up stumbling through a mediocre answer - but just saying, “oh, let me think about that” and taking a few seconds to consider your answer is very useful! It gives you time to calm down and collect yourself, and makes the answer seem more genuine, as it’s something you had to take time to think about.
The same happens to me! I feel as if I am experiencing test anxiety or something.
Oh let me think about that. Then I proceed to think about how anxious I am
One tip I saw said if the employer offers you a coffee or water, take it. You can take a sip to buy yourself time to think
Tell me a bit about yourself
1) well im unemployed since im a highschool student
2) it wasnt hard to get here
3) i love McDonald's chicken nuggets so hire me
perfect
amazing
I believe I would employ you straight away ! You need employment while at school, close to employment, loves food ! After going through interview after interview of people telling me how great they are, a little bit of direct honesty would go a long way. There is a great saying out there: Don't tell me what you know, tell me what you have done !!
"Did you ever stumble during and interview, and what did you do. "
I cried, ok ? I totally suck at interviews and flub them every time.
You’ve got this!
Did they offer you tissues at least...? :(
It's okay. I vomited during one once.
I do too, idk why. I look nuts and idk why it happens
Me too.
I had an unexpected interview so soon and I looked up interview questions to prepare, I clicked on this one cause it's the first one that popped up! They asked me the "Tell me about yourself?" and the "Situation" questions, I usually freeze up and start panicking but after watching this video I followed the steps and I got the job!!!! Thank you so much! P.S. If your someone reading this with anxiety, channel your weaknesses as strengths, and don't forget to breathe deep! I usually have really shaky hands and I talked a lot with my hands and it seemed to really calm me down! My face usually gets really red but I wore my mask so I felt more confident! Thanks again!
Atiana! Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm thrilled to hear you got the job. Congratulations. Way-to-go for putting the hard work in. You've got this!
I watched a few of your videos in attempts to remodel my resume and myself. I have a 2 yr gap on my resume and I was kind of anxious about that. I'm very happy to say that I was offered the job on the spot to my surprise. It's a very large medical center and I really didn't expect to have such a great outcome. They even offered a dollar more than what I asked for. So thank you very much for posting this. It really does make a difference.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing and congrats on the new job.
CONGRATULATIONS

Saved 10 minutes of my life
I’m so discouraged because nobody is hiring me and I have solid experience. I go into interviews and I’m so anxious it’s killing me!
You can do it! You'll get thru it!
How are you now?
You are not alone friend. It's so discouraging, but we will get there.
I hope you got your dream job
I didn’t. I got a job but they felt it wasn’t a fit. I’m terrified because I have no income and if someone doesn’t hire me I’m going to be living in my car with my two cats- no joke.
VIDEO STARTS 2:19 1. Tell me about yourself (Where you are now, how you got there, your passion & how you found the position you're interviewing for)
Behavioral/Situational question advice starts 4:49 she talks until "STAR method" advice is given at 5:39
PROFESSOR!!!!!!!! I followed EVERY SINGLE STEP you discussed in your videos and I GOT THE JOB!!!!! Thank you SO VERY much for all your help and amazing way of explaining. You help me gain confidence I so needed to land this opportunity and well AUSTIN here I come!!!!! Thank you Professor!
Awesome! Way-to-go. I’m so happy for you. When do you start?
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin I start on the 16th of November. Its a floating position throughout Austin so I am super excited for networking, different levels of experience and traveling within the city. (jumping up and down lol!) Thank you SO much again!
Watched this video before my interview last week, and just got my call back! :) I was so scared and when I get nervous I usually blank out and forget parts of my work interview ready stories. Thankfully the interview was mostly behavioral questions and I was able to let my natural passion and personality come out! My fav question from the interview, "what motivates you?" Good luck everyone! Just remember what you love about your work and what you want to learn. ❤
Expressing yourself honestly while still providing all the info an interviewer would want is the goal. I think your answers will help to accomplish that 👏
Sometimes I think about getting a buzz on before an interview just to calm my nerves and feel more confident lol. But I don’t want to mess up what I need to say.
Done it! Take a shot before entering the building, drink some gatorade or something sweet to wash it down and away from your mouth.
Confidence sky rockets and you’re more outgoing and relaxed and loud haha. Dont over do it!
I have an interview today through spark hire. I'm really nervous about it but I'm doing the best I can to be fully prepared for it. I don't want to fail, I want to succeed and show that I'm capable of responsibility, self-motivation and independence
Prof Austin, thank you for such a wonderful guidance on tough interviews. I had done a lot of interviews, unfortunately no success. And these 6 questions I came across before many times, and had not prepared any of those. I am having an interview in the next two days. I will definitely use your tips. Thanks a lot. May God bless me this time. Thank you.
What about older workers. We seem to be invisible to employers.
Have not had an interview in 17 years due to me being at same job but your video is helpful and tomorrow morning is the interview so I thank you for your pointers on such………I’m one of top 3 choices so here goes 👍🏼
I hate, actually despise interviews. I have always been horrible with them. An interview is me at my worse, which sucks I probably didn't get a job because I didn't do well, but-I would have been amazing at the actual job because I always strive to be the best at whatever I do... That is besides interviews. I think because I know they are judging me my mind just shuts down as I have been judged all my life for being me-gay- living in a small hick bible belt town. I wish companies would have choices, like would you rather have an interview, or would you rather do a few days to week internship with the company so they can actually SEE how well you can do at the job. Not just someone blowing smoke making themselves seem to be the best and hardest worker in the world. That's another big reason why I hate interviews I am big into words are just words, action speaks louder. I don't like to brag about myself, I would rather you SEE who I am by my actions. My whole life I have only got jobs that someone recommended me to, so they wouldn't do the usual interview. One time I did apply to a job I want being recommended to, it was really funny (and awesome,) just so happens the hiring manager that was going to do my interview she was looking over my job history and seen who my manager was at my current job. She said that if I could work as his assistant manager for 4 years that is all she needed to know! The interview was over and I got the job! Lol Ends up she had actually worked for him before, she knew how strict he was as most people couldn't handle him, or he wasn't satisfied with them. She actually quit because of him lol. That's where actions speak louder than words.
Wow! This video was great! These are exactly the questions that I struggle with during an interview. Thank you for doing this video!
funny you asked the question, I was at an interview a time back I was stumbling so bad I was stuck saying umm, umm, umm and I knew I was blowing the interview. what I did was, I asked the interviewing manager if we can just have a conversation; and we did, he ended up hiring me:)
Fantastic come back! Thanks for sharing.
That must have been an easy job, it def wouldn't have worked out with the jobs I apply for. :O
Hey Prof Heather Austin - phenomenal video - very informative. I needed to knock the rust off my interview joints and your script practice nailed it for me! Thank youd, ma'm!!
Yesss to the behavioral interview questions. Every time
Wonderful channel! You have such s vibrant personality! ♥️😊✨
Once in the 1970’s I had an interview where this manager asked me what one of my favorites saying is. I said , “Today is the day after the day before” The manger looked at me with disgust
I watched this an hour before my online interview started. super helpful tips!! I got the job! Thank you!!!
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing Jessica.
Thank you for that awesome video, that is a really good tip I need to remember and practice when getting myself ready for and interview. I am definitely going to try this method out
Fantastic Vanessa! Let me k ow how it works out for you.
During an interview, I was asked the "tell me about yourself" question and I spoke about my career. However, the interviewer wanted to actually know about my personal life. I stumble because I wasn't prepared to talk about my personal life. Let's just say I didn't get the job because I kept talking about my career...lol
Yes I was give the exact situational question “Give me an example of when you made a mistake and how you handled it?”
Dee Dee, how did you respond?
This is the great trap question ! Hopefully you did not answer: "I do not make mistakes !"
This was very professional and helpful. Thank you!
Wow this video was really helpful! I hope i can pass my interview tomorrow. Thank you for the tips ☺️
How did your interview go?
Video finally starts 2 minutes in
Nicky R thanks!

I almost quit watching because of this..lol
Holy shxt man, I was ready to shut it off. Thanks
Fu*king millennial attention span!
Great tips! Thank you Heather.
Dipen Khadka you’re very welcome! What was your biggest takeaway?
Be yourself. Stay positive and be yourself and the right job will be yours. You do not want to be placed at a job that will not value your unique skill set.
I always stumble with tell me about yourself. I hate talking about myself so I keep it wor related. Great video thanks
This is extremely thorough. Thank you
Worth a watch, and learn. She's well spoken, and fine, too!
Thank you very much! Yes, I have had those Behavioral Questions.
Never talk about your personal business in an interview. Keep it to your professional background and experience. Great info!
I just had an interview for my life and yes there were STAR questions.
I had a short story for each question but do not feel good about the interview. I have had many interviews that use these type of questions and am always overlooked!
I ended by saying how passionate I am with the type of work and asking for the job. Not sure if that was good or not.
Hi Professor Heather! Thank you for providing great information to the UA-cam community. We know these videos take a lot of time and energy so we appreciate everything you do! - Warmest Regards, Adam and David

These techniques are sure to set us up for success! Thank you!!
Such a well done informative video. Thanks!
Good video, this will be helpful for my upcoming interview.
Yes I’ve always get behavioral interview questions in my interviews.
I had an interview this week for a different position in the company. It was a formality because they wanted me to have it. One of the questions was to tell them about a time when I didn’t know how to perform a task and what steps I took to learn how to do it. I think it was mean to show what initiative I would take to solve a situation before asking for help.
Yes! I interviewed for Boeing and it was all behavioral interview questions.
Thanks really helpful video! 👍🏾
Thank u, helped me tremendously
You’re very welcome.
Just by looking at you and hearing you I feel I will ace my interview will definitely let you know :)
Yes I received an offer!

Thanks for the tips
Thank you for your prominent briefings!
I've got an interview tomorrow for a Horror/Scare Park and I know I shouldn't be nervous but this is my first job! I really hope I get this and I hope this helps me 😭
Yes as someone that works for Apple Inc over the last 10 years this is the only type of questions I know
Interesting! Thanks for watching.
Thanks very much for this 🥰 I know i'm ready now for my upcoming interview❤️ hihi

I got the job 👮♂️! Thanks Heather!
Watching this to prepare for my interview!
I am getting back into the job industry and so I have a gap but want to get back to what I used to do... How would I respond to “what I am doing now if not related to the position I’m applying too?” Thank you for all your tips!

Thanks to you I applied your tips in an interview and was able to impress the store manager at my job. This is the first time I actually enjoyed an interview!!
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much 👍
You’re very welcome!
I use microstories when I get tripped up. Sometimes they ask questions in a different way, I don't even recognize it as a behavioral question.
Kimberly, I'm thrilled to hear you use micro-stories. These are so good to have on hand for an interview when you get nervous. Just mention a story about one of your greatest accomplishments. So good! What's the most difficult interview question you've been asked before?
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin I always get tripped up on the salary questions.
2.17, the questions begin. Good video.
Thanks for sharing! Great tips!
Thanks for watching!
I GOT THE JOB !! Thank you for the good tips
Thank you! Could the answer to the behavioral question be a personal life event, not necessary work related?
Your videos are extremely helpful. You have a beautiful eye color.
Doing the right thing is not always easy, tell us about a time u thought was the right way even though it were easier options.. HARDEST question I've encountered so far
I have a hospital interview tomorrow and I’m using some of these techniques
Awesome! Here's another more recent video that will help: ua-cam.com/video/W3rcd4ZQzpg/v-deo.html. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.
Thank you this really helped me.
Glad it helped!
I find using the star approach sometimes difficult as my examples are more conversational but still adds the star approach, but i noticed interviewers don't look engaged and writing anything. Which means i may have to put it in a sentence format more so.
Thanks a lot 👍
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching.
Watched this video and it helped greatly. Got offer! Thank you
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing Allan! Would you mind if I share your success with others.
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin I would not mind at all
Yes, on behavioral questions
Thanks for sharing Dinah! What behavioral question have you been asked before?
Thanks very much from Australia 🇦🇺

My Weaknesses is Carbs
Haha! Me too.
Hi Heather! Thank you 🙏🏽
You are so welcome!
Thank you, I am preparing for my interview with Mattel! My dream job
Best of luck!
Yes I have been given this type of question. Did you ever have a situation where you had a conflict with another colleague and what's it fixed
Yes , I had a behavior type question recently
Yes
The hardest question I was asked was when the employer ask me what I would do if I get the job, and half an hour later I got another interview where that job is paying more, I was like in my mind how I would answer and honestly I did not because I never now how I would address such situation.
Don't tell the truth, they want to know if you are compromised with the company! Just tell them: 'I would never accept another offer if I already accepted one or if you don't want to lie, you can say ' I would renegotiate the salary'
Or you could say since the job offer is set in, compared to an interview the employment isn't certain... So it's a no-brainier. You'd go with the company offering you the job and not the higher pay offering the interview yeah? That would be an appropriate way to bluff outta that question...
I have a question. In my past interview (which I have self evaluated) I was asked all these questions.
It’s for customer service - my answer goes round and round about customer service. I feel awkward having to repeat myself.
Eg
Tell me about yourself: tip 3: i am passionate about my position because I love interacting with people
What are your strength?
I am good interacting with people.
What is your feedback on this?
