Christian is very expressive and well spoken and he talks about his characters in a psychological level, like he has done a lot of research and deep analyses. That's why he's a great actor.
Christian has said that when people tell him he "should" listen to certain band or he "should" read a certain book it makes him not want to do it. He is more interested in discovering his own thing as opposed to being a good student as he calls it. So don't feel bad for him! He really doesn't care, he's being a bit rebellious about it (which is really cool and individualistic when you think about it). He's a VERY unique cat.
The interviewer said "go buy the first Asia record you'll like it. It's like Journey." Well, Christian could ignore the comment, which he probably did, or if he actually likes Journey(which is possible but unlikely imo)then maybe he would go buy it. Not looking into something just because someone tells you to do something is sort of like what they call "cutting off your nose to spite your face." For me personally I like to discover new stuff so if someone tells me about something I typically like to check it out. I don't see it as others trying to control me.
Yes I want a movie on John Wetton. So bad. Starring Ewan McGregor. He looks like John and Vice versa. Thank you for setting the seed. I studied psychology. You set him up for thinking about it because by suddenly changing the subject you root the thought into his subconscious. I bet he bought that album now.
In the video for Only Time Will Tell, Wetton looks like Russell Crowe. Sean Bean would be perfect for Geoff Downes, and Chris Eccleston as Steve Howe. I can't think of a good Carl Palmer, though.
They should make definitely make a film about JW. I first met him about 9 years ago. For the first 2 years I had no idea he was a rock star. A genuinely lovely, talented man. Felt gutted when I heard the news. So sorry for your loss
Wow. This interview is from 2002 which is three years before "the forty year old virgin." ;) No, Christian wasn't in that but I'm sure someone on here will get why I mentioned that movie.
Mike Reiss why did you mention The 40 Year Old Virgin? I'm not dumb, I just never wanted to watch that film. I know Steve Carrell stars with Bale in The Big Short.
I posted that three years ago. Just watching this again now I know why I said that. LOL. Did you see where the interviewer asks Christian if he knows who John Wetton is? He said he was the singer for Asia. Well the song "heat of the moment" by Asia was featured in the movie the forty year old virgin as well as the main character in that movie having an Asia poster(which he was teased for in the movie). Unfortunately John Wetton died earlier this year. I know trivial to most everyone but I'm a big music guy so I pay attention to little things like that.
Mike Reiss I was taking a chance you'd reply, I wasn't sure because your comment is over three years old. Wow, thank you! I watched the interview and was struck by how dumb he seemed, he is an incredible shapeshifter and actor but I fancy that this Bale's not all there. I too am a huge music nerd and ADORE Asia, unabashedly lol. My older brother grew up in the 1970s/1980s and loves Asia and introduced me to the British superband. I really like Only Time Will Tell and of course Heat of the Moment. I like new wave, rock, soul, alternative, indie and big band. Well I'm geeking out on you lol. But thanks for replying!
I'm not sure if you know this but Asia actually was comprised of members of seventies prog rock bands such as King Crimson(John Wetton), ELP(Carl Palmer)and Yes (Steve Howe and Geoff Downes). Geoff Downes was also a member of the Buggles(who were sort of new wavey and proggy at the same time)along with Trevor Horn before they both joined Yes. I like all kinds of stuff. Your older brother probably likes a lot of the same stuff I did and do. Lol. Yeah, I got the impression Bale wasn't much of a music fan. Hey not everyone is. :)
I actually did know, because my brother has repeated that to me several times lol! That's why I consider Asia a supergroup. King Crimson is underrated in my opinion. Age of Plastic is a good Buggles album. Side note: I fell in love with Jim Morrison and The Doors when I was 3. I used to lay outside his bedroom door to listen to them. My big brother is almost 13 years older than me. My mom loves classic and alt rock so I was majorly exposed. If they thought I was listening to Celine Dion I would have been shunned Amish style lol. I'm a huge admirer of Christian Bale's work, but obviously he is an arrogant arse with mental/anger issues (despite the constant acts of kindness towards *fans*). Mostly I like Empire of the Sun, Equilibrium, American Psycho and Out of the Furnace. This thing where good looking actors starve or expand themselves is ludicrous. Bale doesn't look like the same person from Empire or American Psycho. I read he only listens to Indie and techno music. I cannot imagine being from England and not listening to The Jam or Yes. Great reply, thanks!
You can see that Bale was in the midst of slimming down for The Machinist here.

He looks absolutely DIVINE her. Chiseled bone structure + a mischievous, boyish smile = my slow anguished death.
Yeah he looks real bangable here even though the weight loss is for the Machinist
I just stumbled upon this quick interview. Too funny.
Bale the man
All the interviewer has to do was sing a little of the Heat of the Moment chorus and Bale would have said, "oh yeah, I know that song".

I have to laugh, as John Wetton and Christian Bale share the same alma mater. Talk about irony!
