  • Juan is a friend of mine and a friend of the channel. I used to fly with him when I worked in Kissimmee. Since I left Juan has been pursuing
    his license elsewhere and we had the opportunity to fly together again to see how he is doing. It was great to fly with him again!
    Enjoy the flight!

    Do you promote the use of diversion plotters? I bought one and it is all I use when I get a diversion in my lessons. Draw a line on the chart, get the track angle, account for wind using the clock method 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or all the max drift and get on heading with the stopwatch running. Here in the UK there are so many areas of restricted airspace/ATZs that I usually have to route around things en route. All good fun. Good to see another way of doing things.

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  5 років тому

      Honestly never used a diversion plotter before. I’ve always tried to keep it as simple as possible and keep my head down as little as possible. Sound like the plotter method works for a lot of people though

    hey Great video. this how I did mine during my private check ride. I did used my thumb. After getting my distance and heading to my new airport, I turned to it right away. After turning to my heading, I told the examiner that it was going to take me about 12 minutes to get to my new destination which was approximately 20 NM away from me. How I got that was simply dividing total distance by 2 and adding 2 to it. If i get there early, I will simply tell him... " looks like we have a tail wind". I think it is too much distraction and workload trying to fly the plane and using the E6B. They want to see if you can find a quick heading that will get you to your diversion point. dont have to precise. just get there safely and dont get lost. for fuel, I know the DA20 I was flying takes about 7.5 gillions per hour. I did the math on the ground for anything below an hour.

    • @NETBotic
      @NETBotic 5 років тому +3

      My PPL DPE looked at me like I was nuts when I pulled out an E6B on the diversion.

    • @airbxnee
      @airbxnee 5 років тому

      there’s a diversion plotter you can get that has a ruler up to 40nm, heading compass, windstar, time/dist annex all in a tiny piece of plastic. really worth getting esp if you train in europe where your ETA has to be within 2 mins (for CPL anyways). no room for guess work. however after doing my PPL in the states i know they’re a bit more relaxed (& realistic) when it comes to the VFR diversion on PPL & CPL 😂

    • @110knotscfii
      @110knotscfii 5 років тому +2

      Our end of course standards call for the use of an E6B, but like I tell my students. Aviate first. Your first priority is to fly the airplane. He did a great job.

    • @nimbapilot6925
      @nimbapilot6925 5 років тому

      @@110knotscfii I did not say he did not do a great job. I was just giving him a little tip on how to avoid overloading himself. As pilot, we all learn from each other.

  • @RatedVideos
    @RatedVideos 4 роки тому

    That's a lot of calculation for diversion. I usually just use a VOR that is available close by, draw a line on the map from where I am to diversion point, calculate distance, check where my MH will cross the VOR radial,, get a WCA from a closeby heading and thats all, barely 1 min to do calc - to confirm I also use the VOR radial/distance. Ez calculation in the head when it comes to time and fuel calc.

    I hate mnemonics but couldn't resist the "4 Fs" for a diversion, Find it. Figure it. Fly it. Fine tune it." Of course, there's the real 1st F depending on the reason for the diversion!

    Wind card is cool but realistically no one is gonna take the time to do that before every cross country and examiner may want to see you do real time calculations using E6B and plotter. Pro tip: I recommend just checking your winds aloft before the flight and go ahead and mark the wind dot on the E6B that way it’s one less thing to do in the air.

    about the easy slight inputs on the last few meters to landing ive always been taught to do the same, However last week i went flying with a atpl bloke who captains a dash 8 and with a bit of a cross wind his inputs where nothing like i had seen before he done quick aggressive side jerks to one side with the stick intermittently right down to flare we where in a 600kg mtow machine..never seen that before.

    Why would you just not use the ground speed that the plane is actually doing instead of a calculated one?

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  Рік тому

      Students need to learn other ways of calculating things like GS. I won’t allow my students to solely rely on automation.

    • @mikejohnson2299
      @mikejohnson2299 Рік тому

      yes iam just trying to understand the logic. I agree with you. However, if you in the plane and your flying why would you not just use the ground speed the plane is telling you it is experiencing. Seems like that information is better than a previously calculated one.
