6201 'Princess Elizabeth' Thunders Over Ais Gill On The Dalesman (2019)

  • LMS 6201 'Princess Elizabeth makes her full Royal return to action on the Dalesman. The outbound trip was a difficult one for the big red machine, as there was signalling issues at Hellifield meaning a late departure of 27 minutes. To make time up it was hoped that the locomotive could run non stop to Carlisle and avoid the need to stop at Appleby for water. Unfortunately 6201 used more water than planned over the long drag and it was decided that they would now take up the chance to water as they were close to empty, but more bad luck would ensue and on arrival the crew had no water tanker due to fact the tanker was sent away as it wasn't needed. This meant the crew had to get permission from the signalman and control to cross over to the other platform to use the southbound water tower, making for the rarest of moves at Appleby. The lengthy delays were now adding up and taking it's toll on other services which were at a standstill further down the line.
In this video we capture the arrival of Princess Elizabeth at Appleby and the discussions between the footplate crew on the water issue and what to do. The movements around Appleby do not feature as they are too lengthy. After watering we capture Lizzie departing Appleby running over one hour late.
With the outbound issues behind them the return trip over the S&C was nothing less than superb and the long awaited sound of 6201 roaring over the S&C was back ! The final two scenes show Lizzie storming towards Ais Gill summit and romping over the summit at 38mph with load 12 for good measure.
Great to have this locomotive back and performing superbly well considering her lengthy time on the sidelines. I hope you enjoy the return of 'Lizzie'

Good to see semaphores are still in use somewhere in the world. They've pretty much disappeared from Melbourne's rail network here in Australia. Gorgeous loco too, love seeing the old steam engines roaring along

Great to see Lizzie back and in fine fettle Liam on what turned out to be an eventful day. Well captured on a highly unusual trip and Lizzie did a great job powering up and over Ais Gill - the 4 cylinder power was put to good use by the footplate crew, despite any other setbacks. Thanks. Ken

How come some engines seem to struggle on Ais Gill and others just seem to almost come to a stop, this engine did not even look like it was slowing and just thundered up yet on another video the A4 class seemed to crawl up. But whatever steam trains are just on another level to me even over these super fast French and Japanese trains, steam trains are are like humans they wake up slow they need to warm up stretch out and have a nice drink of boiling water then on there way a few tea breaks then off again just amazing kit.

Probably in part down to the crew keeping the boiler pressure up . . Almost sounds like I know what I'm on about. Havnt a clue just a guess.

Not just steamers. Have you heard a Deltic horn? The LMS Caledonian hooter was chosen, as in many other railways, by panel or committee intended not to show bias when many companies amalgamated in 1923 to form the big four. It was felt the Caley had the most melodious sound, carrying power and dignitas.

Beautiful photography landscape I'm familiar with !!! Made even lovelier by the addition of one of sir William stanier's locomotives. I think and ive had the good fortune to see many types , that this class of locomotive is the loveliest of creation even the great artist of painting them C Hamilton Ellis States so in his lovely old book " The splendour of Steam" .These locomotives are mechanical perfection and of all I think emotive of absolute steam power, exceptions been Sir Nigel Gresley Pacific and so forth. By the way does anybody know the actual water consumption rate and firing method on this type And was the water tanker at last available for the princess. I hope this availability of water can be rectified as we see more steam traction making a comeback due to marvellous preservation societies. Wish they had never removed the water cranes and like one comment on here nice to see semaphore signals. As a keen student of railway signal systems I still maintain they are far more advantageous over modern light aspect systems because you immediately look at their positions I think more visual. I'm writing to network rail to hope that they can keep the ones we have in place on modern system. Thanks for a great visual and audio production that was well made 👍

So who made that planning decision then? Didn't someone ask the tanker to wait until it was confirmed that it wouldn't be needed? I'm afraid that's another bad decision that'll be chalked up to WC Rail

Actually with the safety valves lidting like that - and apparently for so long it's anything but top notch. Over enthusiastic and inaccurate would be best description. Wasteful of coal and reduces useable steam pressure for the engine at a time she needs it most.

Regarding the Appleby saga, what you could do is insert a succession of 2 second freeze-frame shots of the locomotive being moved over to the other track and the various goings-on in that lengthy period - thus compressed into no more than 20 seconds of time - and that would confer a nice sense of continuity before resuming the video for the ongoing journey.
