- On saturday 25th May 2019 the Railway Touring Company charter train 'The Pennine LImited' came from Norwich to Carlisle and back via the Settle line, with steam loco 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' bringing the train between Hellifield and Carlisle, and back.
The train is seen here passing Ribblehead station and viaduct, passing the 3 Yorkshire peaks - Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. Later, on the return journey the train is seen at its water stop (in the rain) at Appleby.
Where else in the world would you see such scenery and such poetry in motion?.
A magnificent beast= working hard, many thanks!
Thanks for your comment - much appreciated.
What a fantastic sound
Thanks Charlie.
Beautifully shot Julian, sometimes there aren't words for such a spectacle. I am surprised there weren't Harry Potter fans blocking the roads though. One observation about the the glorious condition of the engine and coaches - they look like a Hornby train set taken out of it's box on Christmas morning.
Thanks for the comment Nick - glad you approve. This is not the Harry Potter loco - that is Olton Hall (though it looks similar). I have a Triang/Hornby Princess Elizabeth - my first model train - some 60 years old now and looking rather tatty.
Thank you so much for this as I was on this train watching all the people taking videos and photos and wondering.............
Thanks Mike. Having been on several tours myself I know what you mean about others taking video/photos of the trip! Many of the commentators on this page also did videos worth seeing. Hope you enjoyed the trip through our beautiful countryside.
@@JulianThurgood Thanks again Julian, I have found a couple of other videos not as good as yours though but still much appreciated record of my journey. I guess you guys were on the hill to the North of the viaduct, I took some photos of that, you may be on them. I have a Facebook page under Mike Holmes if you are interested.
@@MikeHolmes1944 Thanks - but I couldn't find your pics. Do they have permission for all to see? There are also several people with that name.
@@JulianThurgood Hi Julian sorry about that. I have just uploaded all the pics I took that day to an album 'Pennine Limited - 25 May 2019 and you should be able to see them here facebook.com/mike.holmes.794/media_set?set=a.10217222526929683&type=3&uploaded=44
Many of them were taken through the train window so have reflections.
Hope this works.
Brilliant long shot in the middle section. Thanks.
Thanks Peter. Glad you liked it.
Excellent Julian, a cracking shot over the viaduct and sounding superb with it, wise choice to do Appleby with the problems with signalling and the diesel doing a lot of pushing after that, cheers nige.
Princess Elisabeth a fine sight coming over the viaduct Julian. Superb video. Regards, Jeff.
Thanks Jeff - I love that viewpoint with Ingleborough beyond.
Hi.Julian it's Phil again. She looks I fired a number of them in my time. Its nice to see them still going It brings back memories of my days on the footplate thanks Regards.Phil.
Thanks Phil - glad my videos are giving you some good memories.
Cracking shot on the viaduct Julian.
Thanks Ivan. I was lucky with the weather which started deteriorating soon after. Just watched you 30 year old video of Princess Elizabeth crossing Ribblehead viaduct!
Nice work Julian..... loved your broad shot over the viaduct and then zooms, panning etc as the engine came on to the embankment..... after about 2:55 till the end of the sequence!!
Thanks Hugh - glad you liked this.
Cracking footage Julian , 6201 sounding superb on the Viaduct . Typical late comer at Appleby who plonked himself in your shot .
Thanks Steve. I guess I was lucky at Appleby that not more people stood in front of me (which usually happens).
....and...don’t tell me....you were already set up with your tripod when those thoughtless cretins stuffed your shots...... apart from which , this is lovely footage and a great thrill to see from across the world (Australia).....am constantly amazed that (most) restored steam locos in the UK have such woefully pissy whistles....😎
...and there's something better in Australia? You're joking!
An excellent video Julian with superb scenes at Ribblehead. Nicely filmed. Cheers - Allan.
Thanks Allan - I love filming at Ribblehead - its a pity its such a long way from home.
Great video Julian
Thankyou.
Great video u got the better weather at Ribblehead than I did
Thanks - it started raining while I was waiting for a train north from Ribblehead (which was 30 mins late) then constant drizzle at Appleby, with the small number of photographers all in a row sheltering under the footbridge!
Great footage, and, sound over the Ribblehead, which never disappoints. Pity about the yobs who are deficient in manners. Great work though. Simply great work.
Very nice Julian :)
Thanks Simon.
It seems my choice of Appleby for the return shot was good (based on logistics of train travel) as there was a signal failure between Appleby and Kirkby Stephen, along with worsening weather - horizontal driving rain at Ais Gill.
Very impressive - both the subject and the photography.
Thanks Tim - comment appreciated.
Great footage Julian. Seemed to be quite a turnout at Ribblehead.
Thanks Bob - lots of people at Ribblehead but luckily most seemed to be on the other side not blocking my view as often happens!
I enjoyed that very much. Many thanks for sharing. Subbed! 😊
Thankyou - glad you liked it.
Hi.yes thanks it does Phil.
Poetry In Motion.
Thankyou - comment appreciated.
I always thought she was out of service for a bit..
You must have done a bit of walking for that first clip - hope all is well with the "frame"? At Appleby I see they are using the water tower again.
Thanks Alan - its about 1.5 km from the station to my location - I am trying to build up my walking distances after a bad year last year.
Good man! Keep it up and you'll be shinning up Whernside for it all.
