    Featured Song: "The Fading Children" (from Earthbound) by k-wix

    (Something eerie happened with how the audio coincidentally sync'd up with the conclusion. I am going to try playing Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" next against this video.)

    There's also another foreshadowing of Sadness' special trait being empathy. The emotions in Riley's Mom clearly show that gift since they know immediately that something's wrong, which ties to Sadness being the dominant emotion. Some see that and think that means her Mom's depressed, but it simply means she's better at detecting people's emotions.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  6 років тому +25

      Good point about the empathy... I remember thinking the same thing at first, like, "Is Riley's mom just depressed and her dad has rage issues?" The film doesn't go into it in specific detail, but it implies there is a maturation process of the different emotions. Where Sadness can be empathetic on a day to day basis, or someone Anger-oriented could have a strong sense of protection and right/wrong.
      The empathy thing was why I ended up landing on Sadness for Sulley in Monsters Inc, since I view him as being a pretty empathetic character. Same thing for Mr. Incredible with Anger. I guess the balance and teamwork thing is the most important thing with adult emotions.

    • @VGamingJunkieVT
      @VGamingJunkieVT 6 років тому +5

      Yeah, that too. Both of them have emotions that are jointly in control rather than one seizing control at any one time, which ends up happening for Riley as she emotionally matures and the console is expanded.

    • @billyweed835
      @billyweed835 2 роки тому +3

      Her dad too. He has Anger in charge, a traditionally negative emotion, but in his case, it manifests as a sense of protection and right/wrong due to greater maturity. Plus, the whole "putting the foot down" framed as equivalent to launching a nuke, requiring three emotions and multiple clearances and such, while hilarious, also fits that. It makes sense someone who has Anger as his lead emotion but is mature and functional as an adult, would become very good at controlling his Anger, only letting it out when needed.

    I absolutely adore how the story outside of anyone's brain makes perfect sense. Sometimes, something totally wacky and random happens inside and it has an impact on the outside, but that impact always makes perfect sense in that situation. No stuff like toys scaring a boy.

      Yes!!! The first time I ever saw this film was at a school theater when i was a kid, i think 7 or 8 years ago, and since the first time i've seen Joy, I felt that there's something weirdly familiar with her but couldn't go much further. I was watching the Simpsons since I was born probably, and surprisingly it took me many many many views to figure it out. On the other hand, if Joy had anything more resembling Marge, I think I'd have immediately realized. I think red shoes would have been enough. I'm not even talking about the neckless, that would have been too easy. (or hair............)

  • @TheRealJims

    Three things
    1. I play around a little bit with the pop psychology angle of Inside Out in the video, and attempted to categorize all of the Pixar protagonists. By far, I found Sulley to be the hardest character to categorize, followed by Remy. Please do not make fun of picks. It is hard to psychoanalyze fictional characters. :p
    2. I was recently visiting a friend in San Jose when writing this review, and we swung by San Francisco for a day, which was a neat coincidence.
    3. It was very kind of everyone for not calling me out in the Moaning Lisa comments for telegraphing this review too strongly. The scene between Riley and her mom made me immediately think of that episode.

    • @VGamingJunkieVT
      @VGamingJunkieVT 6 років тому +6

      Probably helps that Riley's Mom didn't realize Riley was suppressing sadness and probably thought she was genuinely remaining optimistic. Contrast that with Marge who knew Lisa was feeling down and encouraged her to bottle it up.

    This probably seems like a very blunt compliment, but I just love the mechanics of the portrayal in Inside Out; on one hand, it's obviously super whimsical and simplified, but on the other hand it's a bit unsettling. Just the fact that the entire "world" of the mind is centered around a giant, black void where things go to disappear. Not even just "die", things that fall into that void flat-out cease to exist- they only really "existed" within Riley's head, but short of maybe Coco I don't think we've seen a Pixar movie where a character ceases to exist. Although, then you can argue, Bing Bong is an imaginary character, so his existence is pretty much as simple as a person thinking about him, so maybe Bing Bong, and fictional characters as a whole within this universe, are effectively "immortal", as long as people remember them.
    Then there's concepts like a core emotion dying in that hole as well, which is unsettling and brings up uncomfortable topics like mental conditions wherein a person is unable to feel a given joy, or just how a mental condition in general would effect this world. Or, bringing this unsettling train of thought to its logical conclusion, what happens when someone dies? I almost imagine a sort of reverse process like how when Riley was born, and Joy is alone in a void with the screen and the podium and they experience her first memory- think of that, but the main emotion just experiencing the person's last memory in a void before everything goes dark. That's a fucking depressing visual, imagine a world where Pixar could do a story about someone dying like that.
    On a lighter note, do the separate emotions also have their own emotions controlling them? I mean, that's the logical conclusion, since the emotions all act like their own people. Do those emotions then have emotions too?
    tl;dr The movie's got a really fun main mechanic to play around with in your head. I almost want a sequel exclusively to build on how different things work.

    You'd be surprised how many people DON'T know that it's okay to let your sadness out. Too many people think that they HAVE to "man up" and "tough it out" because otherwise "we all have bad days" and they can't be pushing their problems on others, and that's essentially why Riley bottles up HER emotions, because she thought it would wrong for her to feel sad. The message of "It's okay to feel sad, don't feel like you're doing something wrong by being sad" is unfortunately extremeley relevant, because there are a lot of people raised to believe the exact opposite.

  • @twokindsofovenfries32
    @twokindsofovenfries32 6 років тому +9

    I wasn't surprised but it was emotional all the same. I really think the film wasn't even about depression, I think it was a film for parents. Joy is a typical parent, who never wants to see her child sad, or for her child to change and grow up, but she has to accept this in the end. When a child grows up, often memories parents have of that child become sad ones because those are years they cannot get back. It's also incredibly upsetting for parents to see key memories of their child are not worthwhile to the child itself i.e Riley's toddler memories fading into obscurity. It's a film that really speaks to that feeling of space between parent and child that starts in adolescence when a child stops becoming a simple machine and reflection of the wants of the parents, and becomes a complex person dependent on multiple interior reactions.

    This is, and will probably continue to be my absolute favourite Pixar movie until the end of time. The concept is genius and the actual execution is perfect. Every character is extremely likeable and despite their main character traits, they all come off as fully fledged characters. The setting is beautiful and constantly engaging to watch, the beats in the plot are clever and extremely entertaining and it’s so damn funny!
    ... But the emotional(pun intended) moments in this movie hit harder than ANY other Pixar movie. Not even the likes of the opening to Up and the ending to Toy Story 3 can touch the spectacular way this movie closes. The entire sequence in the pit with Bing Bong and Joy, the chaos taking place in the control centre, all building up to the breathtaking climax with Riley breaking down, it just smashes your heart to pieces. Maybe I saw this movie at too young of an age to notice its flaws but god damn it I don’t care. I was a blubbering mess by the end of this movie, and this movie EARNS that feeling.
    Inside Out is a masterpiece, a true masterpiece. It’s not only my favourite Pixar movie, but it may also be my all time favourite animated movie and one of my all time favourite movies in general. If you haven’t seen this, WATCH IT! No matter the age you’re at in life, you’ll find something and probably much more in this movie. It’s just phenomenal, top to bottom.

  • @Rubberman202

    I REALLY love the in-depth look at what goes on within the theoretical mind of a child, and I love how the writers actually consulted neuroscientists and child psychologists to really get into the nitty-gritty of how the brain works. I also love how it presents happiness and sadness as well, as sometimes being happy doesn't always mean being nice, and how prioritizing being happy above all else can wind up making you act in a thoughtless or inconsiderate manner; Joy accidentally ends up being something of the movie's antagonist in this regard, since despite wanting what she thinks is best for Riley, her actions only end up hurting Riley inadvertently. The movie IS careful not to make her completely unsympathetic, though, and her impatience with Sadness is less out of malevolence or outright bullying, but more out of not fully understanding why Sadness is even there, since she can at least understand the point behind Fear, Disgust, and Anger. But where this movie really shines is how it handles Sadness; media and culture tend to portray sadness in a negative light, and there's some truth to that, in that if you let sadness consume you it can lead to potentially self-destructive behavior, but that's not to say sadness should be removed entirely or has not use. The thing about Inside Out that I deeply appreciate is that it's a movie made for children (that adults can appreciate, by the by) that says it's okay to be sad, that if something makes you feel sad it's okay to express those feelings. There's also an argument to be made that sadness is also how one shows empathy, in that no showing any sadness can make one seem apathetic or careless. Anger might be necessary in motivating one against something they view as unfair, but it tends to be more destructive if mishandled, as shown by Anger's (also well-meaning) actions in this movie. Sadness helps build connections with others by tapping into people's empathy, which I think is what the movie was going for when Joy sees how a sad memory turned into a happy one, and also the big climactic moment where Riley returned to her parents and confessed her feelings to them. It's a beautiful message, and one I hope gets more positive coverage in other movies and TV shows going forward.
    Also, the idea that there's a "Head Emotion" that guides the other emotions is a nice thought experiment, and tells a lot about what kind of a person the one the emotions are controlling are. Joy is the leader in Riley's head, while Sadness is the leader in her mother's and Anger is the leader in her father's. It makes me wonder what the Head Emotion is for real people... I think that mine might be Sadness or Fear.
    If there's one negative thing I would say about the movie, though, it's nothing to do with the movie itself but rather the potential for more movies or shorts expanding on this concept. Like, there are so many interesting stories to tell about what goes on inside the mind of a person as they grow from a child into a teenage (and maybe beyond), but I think the movie inadvertently limited itself by portraying Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger as no only the main emotions, but also the ONLY emotions a person gets in terms of running their subconscious. Now, I can understand structurally why they did this, they mentioned in the behind-the-scenes stuff that they had loads of ideas of emotions to help run the mind, but that can be a bit too much in terms of making sure each emotion had something to do in the story. At this point, I would assume that these are just the emotions Riley had at her stage of life and that more would come as she grew older, but then we get an inside look of other people's minds, including Riley's parents, all of whom have only the five emotions (and they also happen to look exactly like Riley's except they all have one uniform similarity that I find rather annoying compared to Riley's more diverse mind, but I feel like that's more of a me thing). I also find it weird that Disgust is portrayed as a main emotion; apparently it's viewed as a basic emotion by academics, and yet when I first saw this movie, I understood how Joy, Sadness, Fear and Anger are base emotions, but Disgust feels like an off-shoot of Anger or maybe Fear. However, in that case, Surprise is also a "Basic Emotion" but isn't present here, and neither are emotions like Jealousy, Envy, Calmness, Confusion, what have you. I get that they can't have all these emotions cluttering this one movie, but they shot themselves in the foot by showing that the people of this universe will only ever have the five emotions, and that's a bit disappointing.
    Still, I'd be willing to watch more Inside Out movies, just to see more of what goes on inside someone's head, as well as jokes about brain functionality.

    Everyone talks about the plothole witht the gum commercial, but I think the explanation for that is that Joy doesn't trust the other emotions in headquarters enough to send them the core memeories.
    The plothole I noticed on re-watches of the film is this: why can't Joy, Sadness and Bing Bong just wait for Riley to wake up on the train of thought? Why do they need to go to dream production to wake her up? Nothing would happen to Riley while she's asleep.
    I understand that something needs to happen to get Riley to want to go back to minnesoita to get to the climax of Riley stealing her Mom's credit card and to get her on that bus, I just thought that that step in the plot of Joy, Sadness and Bing Bong going to try to wake Riley up didn't make much sense.

    This film epitomizes the genius of Pixar. What other studio would produce such a story; or even listen to the pitch? The concept is so original. Even if I loved the story pitch, I would have been so skeptical of the team's ability to actually visualize the story and pull it off. Yet they did, brilliantly. I think the public didn't really "get it" and the unfortunate title (confused with the Kevin Kline romp with a similar title). It's not my favorite Pixar (Ratatouille), but I give it full marks as one of the most original films ever produced.

    the channel drawpinion dump suggested that the final action scene back to hq was the result of riley's mind giving in to joy and sadness. Previously, joy's arc wasn't complete, so fate wouldn't let her get back. However, once Joy has her growth, the path forward becomes clear, and she's successful in her mission even against all odds. After all, Riley cannot feel happy until she accepts her sadness, so it makes sense she wouldn't let joy in.
    I think interpreting that scene this way makes the randomness of it feel a lot better in my opinion.

    I like this movie, but I never found it all that emotional despite the movie advertising itself as an emotional movie. It's definitely very smart and clever in its execution, but not very emotional. It's hard for me to feel emotionally invested in a character who's designed to be a blank slate. We don't really get to know Riley as a person, everything we know about her is explicitly told to us and are pretty generic and could apply to just about any kid character. It's kinda ironic that the personification of all these different and varied emotions is more bland than the individual emotions themselves. Granted, the movie isn't necessarily about Riley, but she's the one who sets up the major conflict of the movie and makes the stakes feel less personal. Again, it's still a good movie for a lot of the reasons you mentioned, but I wouldn't endlessly sing its praises like most people.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  6 років тому +8

      That's a fair point. I get the sense that Pixar ended up dialing back the specificity and detail of Riley's story to streamline their high concept story. They were definitely going for relatability. I found a lot of her stuff to be hard to review when writing this thing, to be honest. She is just kind of a vehicle for the inside stuff. The Joy and Sadness stuff interested me way more.

  • @Interfaune
    @Interfaune 2 роки тому

    The scene that brought tears to my eyes wasn't actually Bing Bong's death but his scene after the wagon went down the void.
    Also, good point about keeping the feel of Riley's free will. I remember when i was a kid watching Ozzy & Drix I initially liked it but after a while it gave me kind of an existential crisis giving the impression that Hector was basically just a flesh vehicle with no say over his life at all since every little move he made was under the influence of cells and microorganisms. I had to stop watching the show when it made me doubt if anything I did was actually done by me at all and if I even was a "me" or just an "it.". XD I don't think I would feel the same if I was a kid when Inside Out was released. I also believe that, besides just being an effective move to make clear visual gags, there might be a point to the older humans in Inside Out having emotions that all somewhat resembled the person they were in charge of. As you mature and develop the more definitive version of you the power balance between you as an individual and your emotions might shift towards your side. Therefore the emotions might be more united with time serving more as an advising council than a ruling government over your emotional outlets. Thus wearing the "uniforms" of the person.

      i highly doubt that ratatouille is going to win. i hope wall-E is going to be #1, but i have a strong sense it's gonna be toy story 3 (much to my dismay). Ratatouille is probably going to be #3, which is incredibly higher than i expected, and it'll be interesting to see him explain what he sees in it. then again jims has been very unpredictable with his rankings so maybe ratatouille will win. or maybe wall-E. anyway i really hope it's not toy story 3.

    I’m sure with the other Pixar Protagonists today:
    Ian from Onward would have Fear.
    Joe from Soul would have Joy.
    Luca would have Fear.
    Mei from Turning Red would have Joy.
    Buzz from Lightyear would have Sadness.
    And Ember from Elemental would have Anger.
    But that’s what I think.

    I saw this once in a theater & enjoyed it but haven't seen it since. It just didn't grab me. I actually think it would have been more interesting if the main character had been a boy. For girls, being sad is o.k. but for boys it isn't. I have a feeling the conflict would have been more anger vs. saddness. And I know we saw all of her emotions but saddness was the main one & the issue Riley was having was causing her saddness. I just didn't get a lot out of it. It didn't move me like Wall-E or Toy Story 2.

    As much as i adore this movie,I would honestly put it below Incredibles and Up. It doesn't have the same amount of maturity or intensity as Incredibles. Or the likeability and inspired message of Up. The film is still amazing regardless. Just not one of the greatest of Pixar. And Toy Story 3 is in the top 3 I see. That one wouldn't even be in my top 10 lol

      Not to mention the scene in the junkyard conveyor belt where Woody and Buzz save Lotso by pulling out a metal golf club; Woody is about to be magnetised and lifted up but Buzz grabs on and the weight of both of them keeps the club down so they can wedge Lotso out. Then Woody, Buzz and Lotso all grab on to the same golf club and are magnetised to safety... Makes absolutely no goddamn sense!

      Probably helps that this is during a time where Pixar was largely pushing out sequels. It was considered a "return to form" for Pixar and highly praised as a result.

    This is one of the Pixar films I just couldn’t get behind, I watched it and felt nothing. Maybe slightly irritated with a hint of eye roll, so for a movie about emotions, it was a total miss for me. I see a lot of people rating it ridiculously high among Pixar films and I guess I’m just one of those people who will never understand why. At least not from a first person perspective.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  6 років тому +6

      What is YMS? Your Movie Sucks? I had been kind of avoiding reviews of these movies lately so I avoid getting tainted. I'll need to look it up, kinda surprised Inside Out is a divisive film.

    • @xmegami5511
      @xmegami5511 6 років тому +2

      Your Movie Sucks more or less gave his own points for and against the movie, and I was just curious if what you thought of them (I also recommend his CoCo video after you make Pixar Perfect on it too). I'm not going to say that you should agree or disagree with him, I just want to know what you think of the video after you watch it. Thank you and have a good day.

    • @VGamingJunkieVT
      @VGamingJunkieVT 6 років тому +2

      Ever seen CinemaSins' video on the movie? His whole shtick is nitpicking everything and even he had to admit a number of times in the video that it's a quality movie. You know something is good when CinemaSins starts retracting sins.

    • @xmegami5511
      @xmegami5511 6 років тому

      MetroidJunkie I wouldn't call Adum a "CinemaSins" style content creator (unless you're talking about his YMS reviews, which even then, still doesn't feel like CS at all). The guy is a film reviewer first, and everything else second. He cares about cinematography, visual story-telling, dialogue that has the audience entrapped by the world instead of taken out of said world, scores that add to the scenes, and films that don't contradict themselves when making a world. He admits, that if he was a kid, he would love the movie, but when others talk about films marketed at kids as masterpieces, than he takes the kids-gloves off and treats it like any other movie, judging it with all the same flaws as any other movie. I don't always agree with him, but I won't others to create a misrepresentation of him and his ideals. Thank you, this isn't an attack of you, I just wanted to explain YMS as a long time fan of his work.

    • @VGamingJunkieVT
      @VGamingJunkieVT 6 років тому +1

      Ah, my mistake. I figured he'd be like CinemaSins and nitpick as a form of comedy. I'm used to reviewers like that, the AVGN style.

    What a shitty, smug beginning. So unnecessary and random, and of course totally wrong in its pointless arrogance. And the stove comparison: oh my f... gawd. So cheap.
