    It feels like there are so many kids in the comments. Bruce is supposed to represent our fears of the unknown. That's why Bruce is so unnatural so monstrous. Quint hunts sharks because of his fear, Brody had a reason of his own personal fears of the ocean. Dreyfuss was driven by curiosity, which is what we all have when it comes to thinking what roams in the ocean. The random zooms on the horizon of the ocean in all of the Jaws movie are deliberate, all to make you wonder what is out there

      Saint AK_47 nailed it. The end. The book is about Brody, Hooper and Quint. Their back stories and fears. It’s not even about the shark really. It’s our primal fears.
      Folks, Bruce was a Great White. 25ft in the book, 25ft in the movie. There are Great Whites now that are larger than that. They didn’t Godzilla the shark FFS :)
      Best. Movie. Ever. Just sayin.

      True. I think people are overspeculating about the shark's origins. Like, some people theorized it was a baby Megalodon (Why would you, please don't).
      It clearly was meant to be a normal great white shark, not a unnatural monster or a genetic mutation.

    Bruce is the Micheal Myers of sharks. He has no reason to his madness, or anything the human mind can understand. He just simply is what he is, a force of nature. And that to me is what’s scariest of all.

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 Рік тому +2

      That just sounds ridiculous. Bruce is taking a lot of unnecessary punishment to get what amounts to a relatively small meal. A real vicious predator would even retreat if it sustains too many injuries to continue. Animals don't kill on purpose.
      The "force of nature" thing would only make sense if Bruce was actually a supernatural servant and guardian of the ocean sent to punish humans who dare to desecrate the ocean in any way.
      Michael Myers kills because of a Celtic curse. How else does he survive severe injuries? Being a killer doesn't automatically make you superhuman.

    • @a.w.sawtooth9469
      @a.w.sawtooth9469 Рік тому +5

      @@kidprime6863 Funny how you say the word “ridiculous” but then go on to prove my point. And you don’t have to be a servant of something to be a supernatural killer in movies. And for the record, that Michael Myers reference you used, was something which came out of what’s known as the Thorn Trilogy (Halloween 4-6). Those three movies are an entirely different timeline, and thus aren’t canon. Michael Myers in the first movie was a blank slate, hence why he’s known as “The Shape”. Just like Bruce is a blank slate in his own right.

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 Рік тому

      @@a.w.sawtooth9469 I'm just saying that the reason they kill can't ALWAYS be "just because". Personally I believe Bruce is either a Megalodon, a US Navy experiment gone horribly wrong or a supernatural spirit. US Navy experiment would actually make a whole lot of sense because maybe they gave the shark some type of experimental steroid that boosts its strength and durability but also pumps its aggression and hunger to make it the perfect marine weapon.
      At least the Thorn Trilogy made sense. I hate the "killer has inhuman durability and/or strength" troupe. If the killer isn't a wild animal, an actual monster, undead, supernaturally or genetically engineered or enhanced but just a typical knife-wielding maniac, then they can be killed by shooting decapition, burning and dismemberment. The troupe is basically plot armor. In other words, The Michael Myers from all movies outside the Thorn Trilogy can be killed by conventional means like getting bisected from head to groin.

    Jaws from the movie was definitely something more evil. I think some of the characteristics we saw of Jaws, is a mixture of normal shark-like behavior and something more sinister. It's as if some evil entity, beast, Leviathan, etc, lived inside the Sharks body being influenced by the Sharks nature.
    For example, going after the boy on the raft instead of swimmers is a case of mistaken identity for seals (unless you make the presumption Jaws attacked the kid because he knew it was a kid, then yea that's even worse). But there was definitely something more going on. Something eviler and the introduction of the movie pretty much says it all too me. To this very day, that introduction scene still gives me the chills. Every time I watch that scene, in the beginning, getting eaten and screaming out "Please God, No, God Please, NO!" You know from that very moment it's something evil and not just your average shark.

    • @SanguineSketches
      @SanguineSketches Місяць тому

      Absolutely, Bruce subsists purely on human fear. We know this because of the people he chooses to kill. Firstly, he stalks and kills a lone girl, which is something that all females are deathly afraid of. Not to mention, he plays with her in an attempt to generate the most amount of fear possible before he kills. Secondly, he kills a little boy. Many young children are afraid of monsters hunting them down. Despite many theorists saying otherwise, Bruce chose Alex Kitner for the same reason he killed Chrissie, to feed on his fear. Bruce also killed the Estuary man because he knew that sudden danger appearing in a seemingly safe place would generate the most terror. Finally we come to Quint. Quint was easily the most scared of all the characters due to his experience on the USS Indianapolis, making him an especially tasty snack for Bruce. Essentially, Bruce (in my opinion) is a demonic entity, like Pennywise in Stephen King’s “It”, that feeds on the terror and pain of the innocent and vulnerable.

It may have been coincidence that the Taylors just happened to film a male shark that day where they got a shot of the claspers on one of them. They did, I believe film more than one great white in Australia for the cage sequence in the movie. And of course the water was surely baited with chum and tuna to invite more than one shark.

      Generally, old age is not a reason for sharks to kill humans like it is for tigers, lions or leopards, themselves man-eaters suffering from advanced age like in so many incidents. Regardless, the shark in Jaws could have been very old; in real life, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute has shown that great whites can live to be at least 72 years old. It would not be surprising if Bruce was at least 80+ years old.

      See, not to me. I think the first half is scarier because no one is fighting back. Really the only difference between an action movie and a horror movie is that in action movies the protagonist fights back. There were tense moments in the 2nd half but, to me at least, the first half was where most of the horror was. I did get the sense that the shark was more intelligent than it ought to be but that merely made it more interesting as the heroes vied for victory over it. It wasn't just a fishing trip: it was a real fight.

      This my theory, there’s a phenomenon in marine biology known as Abyssal Gigantism, whereas an animal who spends its life in darkness grows to immense size. Perfect examples include the Giant and colossal Squid, oarfish, And giant deepwater Sharks. Perhaps Bruce is a rogue but with genetic mutations considering g the sharks jawline has jowls, immense strength.

      @@lemmythebulldog8812 I believe Bruce and his kin were evolved Megalodons.
      The Bruce line were physically larger than normal great whites, bulkier, heavier, and have facial features that was not normal for normal white sharks.
      Evolution can go many ways for a animal. Just becuase a animal that was a giant in the past would mean its a giant in the present. A variant of the Meg could have evolved into smaller sharks. Physical changes would result in them adapting to new roles but some physical features would still be present. Such as perhaps odd looking cheek muscles flaps at the jaws that you don't see in any White Sharks but probably would exist for a animal that used to hunt whales and needed extra strength to bite through whale bone.

    Great video! Even as a kid I always assumed Bruce was a leviathan. Some kind of supernatural mix of shark and monster. It looks and acts so sinister that it cannot be mistaken for a normal shark. Both Hooper and Quint, both experts on sharks, have never seen any shark do what this one does. It shares these traits with other movie monsters. They have supernatural strength, intelligence, foresight. Always at the right place at the right time. They enjoy terrorizing their victims and make sure to demonstrate their intent.

    the jaws wiki poses two theories:
    1. Because the great white shark depicted in Jaws did not appear to look like a typical great white shark, it has been suggested by fans that this shark was in fact a mutated beast rather than a genetically perfect Great white shark specimen. This would also account for its maniacal personality and traits depicted in the film in so far as outward "rogue" behavior. This however is pure speculation.
    2. Proponents believe this shark as well as the other sharks depicted in the sequels possessed supernatural powers and could not have been destroyed, in much the same way Jason in the 'Friday the thirteenth' film series could not.....also in the novellization of the 4th film....the shark was under control of Voodoo as revenge gainst the Brodi family (god damn thats dumb)

    Inspired, and reminds me of what James Rolfe said about Jaws: "they missed the point, they made it too good."
    The point being that if this movie was made in the 1950's, it would have been in good company among all sorts of animals blown up to inflated proportions. No explanation needed, just it's a villain, so it's big...
    It also leaves me thinking of the Stargate Universe episode "The Hunt", in which a similar huge creature is initially dismissed as unintelligent: "There's nothing special about this thing. It's a monster..." and "I can't stand the thought of being eaten alive. When the time comes, you will?" and similar.
    Check it out if possible!

    I've always believed that Bruce was a freak of nature, the shark equivalent of a maniac. I mean, you get crazy people in the human world, so why not in the animal one? Plus the Jaws novel gave me that impression too, it almost felt to me that Bruce had always been a loner. Like he was so screwed up that even other White sharks would be scared of him/wouldn't accept him. I completely agree with the theory that he had a mutation and wasn't like other White sharks genetically. You only have to look at his body, he was a lot more bulkier than a regular Great White. Normal Great Whites are more streamlined and more torpedo-like. Bruce was like a battering ram! I believe that on the odd occasion you will get a person in the world that is born evil, like there was a certain part of their brain that didn't develop properly or something. Well Bruce for me is the shark equivalent of that, which would also explain his power, as a lot of serial killers etc have been known to have almost superhuman strength. So yeah, to wrap it up, Bruce: Maniac Shark! Sounds like the title of a really dodgy B movie doesn't it?! 😂

    True story. Back in 1982 my grandfather caught the first great white to be landed in the state of Maryland, off of ocean city. It was early in the morning, but he could see the lights and hear people at the inlet rides early in the night while they were drifting. So just a few miles off shore. Sound does travel on water. The shark they pulled in Was around 10 feet. But just before that, they had released a much larger shark. A great white. After fighting it for 4 hours and bringing it alongside his boat, it began thrashing and was dangerously close to swamping his boat, a 21 foot sea hawk center console. Both he and the other three men on board claimed it was at least 3 feet larger then the boat itself. So they had no qualms cutting it loose. Seriously. Fuck that. Remember also, this was back in 82 when conservation was not what it is today. And my grandfather as I knew him (I lived with my grandparents from age 4-17) was never one to tell fish tales.

    One think I like about you and your vids is that you have this passion and believability in your descriptions. Using this video as an example, even if you are wrong about Bruce about video you gave a different perspective and it's a view I hold.
    It's the feeling that Bruce, just like a Lovecraft monster, is hidden, ageless, and seemingly impossible in the realms of science. To quote lovecraft in Dunwich Horror "this is where all realism left and pure fantasy began"
    Your video also evokes the original trailer to JAWS very well. And quoting the story of the Leviathan really captures my imagination. As all mythological and theological texts are all descriptors of man trying to make sense of the seemingly impossible. Bruce did come from the Dark and in my mind the paradise of Amity Island was violated by its Maw. Even the three men, the continuation of civilizations ancient heroes feared the possible damnation of being taken by such spawn.
    Look forward to more videos

    I watched a documentary over 10 years ago about great white sharks and there was one segment about a father and son fishermen who claim they almost caught a 30 foot great white shark that they nicked named SUBMARINE. Reason why they didn't catch her was because they actually had her on a hook but they were on a little 15 foot fishing boat and Submarine was apparently 30 feet which means she was double the size of the boat they were on and they had no choice but to let her go cause she was so big and powerful that she was gonna pull the boat underwater if they hadn't released her, wonder if its true or not

    That is precisely what Bruce is, a fiction.
    No doubt that Bruce’s enormity and strength are something to fear, but what really makes Bruce frightening is actually his intelligence. This was a “shark” that was strategic, who, as you pointed out, was aware of humans trying to kill him and was forced to respond, and not like an ordinary animal, but calculatedly. In many “Top Horror Films” lists by movie critics, film websites, and review panels, “Jaws” is often cited up there, not just because it was masterfully shot that way by Steven Spielberg, but also because of Bruce himself, whose behaviors and characteristics are very much more closely aligned with that of a human serial killer than an oceanic predator. And this is what makes Bruce a fiction (as you said, the most realistic embodiment of the leviathan). To put it how my old Anatomy Professor put it, “Jaws” is to marine biology what “Jurassic Park” is to genetics. Is it completely 100% impossible that we will find mosquitos from millions of years ago who have, by infinitesimal odds, been carefully preserved in amber (or by other means) AND on top of that, whose digestive systems have somehow retained the unbroken and untampered DNA of dinosaurs that it fed on? And! Lastly, whose DNA structures happen to have compatible link matches with modern amphibians (or any animal) that are so perfect we are able to accurately re-create them in a lab with the same physical and physiological features as they did millions of years ago? To a point that their diets, lifespans, or even something as basic as moving are not affected as a result of mutation? The answer is, of course, no, this is not completely 100% impossible, but it is so abysmally against the odds (like 99.indefinite 9% unlikely) that you may as well say that Jurassic Park is impossible (at least the way it’s illustrated in the film, a theme park with living dinosaurs that we breed like zoo animals that don’t die after two weeks). Likewise with Jaws, is it completely 100% impossible that we will find a shark that is so frighteningly intelligent that it is strategic about its hunt, that it distinctly knows/remembers its prey by their faces and voices, that it knows how to execute countermeasures in a fight, that it can figure out when it’s being manipulated, and can respond with deceptions of its own? Of course this is not 100% impossible (I mean, come on, humanity has only ever explored 5% of the Earth’s ocean), but, so far as science is concerned with the data it does have, the odds of finding a shark of this level intelligence is so abysmally low, we may as well say that it’s impossible. Bruce is a fiction, but as with many iconic killers in cinema, a well-showcased one.

However, i do feel there must be White Sharks out there bigger then Deep Blue. Nothing was mentioned here about the famous "Submarine" in South Africa. Who many fishermen claim to have seen and reported at a size between 25-30+ft...!!! I do believe Submarine exists or should i say did exist. But one must realize the length of time it takes for a shark to obtain these massive sizes. The 20ft female "Deep Blue" is a reported 50yrs old...!!! So were talking about a VERY few sharks out there that are "possibly" bigger then her much less still alive. However, since we know more about or moon's surface then what's under the water. Anything could be lurking out there without us knowing about it. Giant squids for example of massive proportions and most definitely new species yet to be discovered.

    I'm an original 'Jaws' kid. I read the book before the movie came out. It was 1974 and I was eleven. Peter Benchly never explicitly says so, but he sure does implicate that Bruce is far more clever than the average fish. Quint tells Brody "These things don't have the brains God gave a dog.", yet Bruce continually outwits him with a seeming intelligence. There is a malevelence implied in the way Bruce shows off Hooper's dead body to Brody and Quint. The movie carries it further, in my opinion, which makes sense; Bruce isn't JUST a shark, he is a monster, and, I believe, a very old one too. I have often considered Bruce to be the last of the great Universal Monsters, but I won't argue the point with anyone. It's certainly a far out opinion, I know. To me, Bruce IS malevelent. He feeds on human beings, and is really good at it. I think he's been doing it a long before coming to Amity Island. He's suspiciously large for a male Great White, indicating great age. He's covered with scars, indicating battles fought before. Who knows? Africa? Australia? The Mediterranean? Where has he terrorized before? How many more men before Brody, Hooper, and Quint went to sea to try to kill him? I'd like to think Bruce, over his long life, gained experience at combatting men on boats. Perhaps he learned boats mean food? Perhaps he learned that early in his life? It's fun to speculate. For ME, Bruce is monster; old, terrifying, and malevelent.

    4:17 Sorry, but I really don't think there was anything personal for the shark (Bruce) in terms of going after the Orca. It was drawn there by the chum they were dumping overboard, just as the three men intended. lucca ferla Agreed, It went after the Orca three times, it might have been lured to it the first time by that chum and Quent first hooking it on piano wire, but those later attacks ranging from Bruce ramming the Orca at night (with his nose certainly, which is the most sensitive area on a shark’s body, but that doesn’t phase Bruce at all with his raw ramming power) to him stalking the Orca and then chasing it points to a creature that takes being hunted by Quient Brody and Hooper VERY personally.

    I would love to offer solid backing to these theories, but I’m pretty sure that it was just meant to have been a rogue, that was particularly large and strong, and kept being underestimated because of its uncommon traits. Underestimation is why the characters struggle on the Orca. When they first realised how big he was, had they gone back for a harbour cruiser with mounted harpoon and auto rifles, Bruce would have been sushi. But then we wouldn’t have had such an awesome final third.

    Very great vid, thanks BH Pumkinclaw. I believe the true passion lies within our own mind's as to what Bruce was. The use or non-use I should say, of graphics to illustrate what was happening under the water during Chrissies' attack made it so much more alluring and intriguing; having to make use of our own imagination. I think Bruce was a "freak" in the sense that he had some sort of intelligence that surpassed that of just primal instinct. A malicious personality, like a serial killer reincarnated. Please let me put an idea of my own out there. I am just saying, please don't be too harsh with my idea...
    Imo, any type of remake would only fall short, very short of the original. Cgi would only take away from it unless used smartly and sparingly. Hence, a prequel. My idea would revolve around a young Quint aboard the USS Indianapolis. The main plot would be after the vessel had sunk and the sailors were in the water. The men were being attacked by sharks, but one bastard shark in particular......Bruce!! Towards the end, as Quint (in his "lifejacket" that he glances uneasily upon) are finally being lifted to safety, he makes eye contact with Bruce. Finally, the last scene would entail an underwater view from Bruces' perspective. Just swimming for about 20 seconds or so. Then have him peer above water only to see a buoy that says "Property of Amity." The same buoy Chrissie clung to. Screen goes black followed by credits.
    Just a thought☺!

    I like to think that Bruce is a creature that was simply made from hate and evil. I think that Bruce was born from a shark who was recently killed by a hunter, he bit the hunter’s throat before jumping back into the sea, but he was born too early. When he leaped into the water, he was actually in extremely deep water, having nothing but Orcas, sharks, Sperm Whales, and a lot of hunters, so it forced him to become smarter, killing and eating a mako when he was at the age of 2 because he figured out that every shark’s weakness is at the belly, he sliced it open, killing it. Over the many years, he studied and figured out the weaknesses of all of the predators, even getting to the point where he was able to kill a massive Sperm Whale, after so many deaths on his hands, he couldn’t get enough. He soon swam to the beach that Jaws takes place in, and that’s the story. I hope everyone who read this liked it

    I think you're reading more into the marketing and not the actual story itself. There's very little in Jaws that is not grounded in real life. Okay we can say Spielberg embellished moments like the shark exploding and the dock being pulled from it's foundation for entertainment purposes. And no when people get attacked, there's normally not a 30 piece orchestra playing a stalking theme for effect.
    But before you micro manage every moment of Jaws as if only a mystical creature could do this, let's examine what science completely finds normal in this story. He kills one girl who is swimming at dawn when most sharks hunt for food near shore. He doesn't swallow her. She's chewed up and her remains are washed up on the beach, partially intact. Completely within the scope of what has been witnessed and examined in the field.
    The dog - An animal peddling in the water like a seal. Case closed.
    The boy on the raft - How many times have we talked about sharks looking at objects on the surface ( like a raft or surf board) and mistaking them for something else? Completely normal. Did Jaws attack anyone else packed in the water? No...
    Ben Gardner's boat is allegedly rammed and sunk. I'm not sure why people find this outside the parameters of believability. Much smaller sharks ram and stalk boaters. Can you imagine a 25 footer acting in the same manner? See this article from last year.
    thewest.com.au/news/wa/esperance-locals-fear-for-safety-of-beachgoers-after-sharks-ram-boats-ng-b88601956z
    The Estuary victim. Jaws bumps those boats capsizing each. You have three teens and one adult in the water. Jaws chews up one and yet with all that blood in the water goes right by the others. Monster? Doesn't sound like it.
    All that's left after that is Quint. They bait the water and keep the shark in a feeding frenzy. All of that from Jaws breaking into the cage which you can find on countless youtube searches, to the great white coming out of the water (check out the video flying sharks) illustrates what great Whites can do. Does Spielberg embellish the extent of which the shark rams the cage and jump on the boat? Well of course. But we're still talking about a 4 ton creature making up it;s mind it wants to attack.
    Jaws is simply a great white that eats four people. Well documented events like this have happen and there's no reason to believe rogue sharks have not eaten people in the surf in a number of different places. These are predators not kittens turned into Lions. So I don't feel Jaws is really all that fictional by any stretch. Encounter a hungry one in the water that looks to be the size of a station wagon and tell me if you feel any safer because it's real. I bet your answer is no.

    I've considered Bruce and the first Jaws a form of metaphore where Bruce is presented as a force of nature, a monster that is far smarter and more vicious than regular sharks, it's like Godzilla. It pursued 3 particular men that attacked it so it wanted revenge- something sharks don't do and it just wasted so much energy and took a lot of damage bashing through the walls of Orca, or getting speared, it's nothing a real predator would do. Maybe a human, but is's worth noting serial killers pick weak prey

    I know you said that you didn't want to get into shark diet, but it probably does need to point out that eating four people in a few days would not give Bruce back the energy it expended in eating them, much less in wrecking all the boats it did. Sharks need lots of energy and for great whites the size of Bruce that is supplied by mammals with a LOT of fat: Ie.. whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, and such. Bruce should be starving if he's living solely off humans.
