  • This is just a short video on how I whatu/bind for Piupiu or other items that one might want to bind together. It is by no means the only way to do this and one can use all sorts of materials both for the actual binding or what is bound...Just a bit of inspiration for you out there during these tough self-isolation times.

    I found your video so very helpful. About to start my own kakahu/korowai journey. Very very easy to follow instructions. Amazing thankyou! Can I ask, where did you go to learn?

      ah thank you! I learnt at Unitec back in the day when they still had a full time 1 year raranga program. My kaiako was Judy Robson-Dean. Sadly the program does not exist anymore.

      There's so many I know now who want to learn same as me. I thought there was a raranga course here in palmy at TWoA but can't seem to find it online. Online Facebook korowai pages and vids like these make doing it alone seem possible. Nga mihi nui ki a koe 🙏

      @@smkeyMacPot yeah, its tricky. Online classes are not for everyone either. Some people learn very well online others do better (or quicker) face to face. Let me have a look - facebook.com/Highburyweavers/ that might help?

      Yup I found them also, haven't worked up the Kaha to rock up there yet lol if I'm not doing to hot on my own I will! I like learning more by hands on kanohi ki te kanohi. But the visual of the vids and explanations are pretty spot on so I'll try this way first. Bit easier with a toddler running amuck in our own home too 😂

    You make it look so easy!! How do you tie it off at the end though?

    • @Flaxworx
      @Flaxworx  3 роки тому

      lots of practice:-) there are a few ways to finish but the easiest is just to knot... another is to feed the ends back (that is the way to do it when using this for taaniko for instance) but there are other more intricate ways that I have seen but not use myself.

    How do you finish the row? Do you have a video on finishing? or going back? This is a great video! Thank you!

    • @Flaxworx
      @Flaxworx  3 роки тому

      there are a number of ways to finish something like this. One way is to go back and make a second row, another would be to just knot the ties at the end and incorporate them into either a handle of sorts or a taaniko or they can also be "tied" back and then just tightened - basically feeding them back on themselves to hide them - like most people would do on taaniko (it does take a bit of practice though). Most times I just knot the end...

    Can you do the same with feathers too?

    • @Flaxworx
      @Flaxworx  3 роки тому +1

      yes you can but there are a few things to consider and slightly different with feathers (depending on what type of feathers and also who teaches it and so on) - there are many ways and materials to do this. Every so often there are courses out there specifically for making Kahu Huruhuru and I think there is also a FB group about that very subject that you may want to look up.

    For making a kakahu for the verticle strands what would you use?

    • @Flaxworx
      @Flaxworx  4 роки тому +1

      Well, I am a purist or rather traditionalist in that regard (Korowai or Kahu Huruhuru) so would only use Muka Aho but I know many use contemporary materials but what kind I am not sure, to be honest. Back in the day, many used mop cloth but not sure where they got it from. I do use the Jute for Piupiu orders that are price sensitive. If a customer wants me to use all muka I do that though.

      Its Gardman 3 ply - you can get it from Mitre10 and Kings Garden Center (those are the ones I buy from)
