We hold our heirlooms such as cloaks and toanga with utmost respect, and equally those made in the way our tupuna would expect. The irony is that the many do not have access to these family toanga and majority cannot afford to pay for the authentically made korowai. Many revert to the modern made kakahu. I acknowledge those weavers who have skills in this field, but I also believe the modern kakahu has a place in our modern world where they can still enjoy wearing another form of cloak with pride.

I agree not alot of whānau dont have the money, skills or time to make one. Our tupuna were industrious and I believe if they had sewing machines they would have used them to make their cloaks and would have thought it was clever. I make it my goal to make one for our whānau in my lifetime ❤️

Anyone too poor to buy one made by others has the ability to take it up and learn it themselves.
Learning is hard but worth it.
