Sometimes he even does some jobs for free! Like when a supporter was going to pay for a few horses to be casted, he gave them a rough estimate just for the materials and process, and didn't seem to include his own time and struggles that would normally be there.

Definitely, especially since a lot of even good farriers will either not work with drafts period, not work with "troubled," or "problem," horses period or specifically problem drafts.. meaning any farrier that's willing to work with problem horses especially drafts is a miracle to anyone even more so a rescue or sanctuary. 👏

But at the same time, these horses act up because they are in pain, caused by bad hooves.

Paully has a great heart. I've seen him hang around to help with tasks that most farriers would run away from, saying "I don't paid for that, so I'm outta here!" And he does some jobs for cost, just to help the poor horse.

Pauly you're a damn saint. These horses and rescue are so unbelievably lucky to have you. You're doing the work that the original owners of these horses should have done long ago. I would love to have you guys do a video with Pauly explaining how you can teach your horses at home to stand well with respect. I think there's a ton of ignorant owners who simply don't know how or why you should be working with them on this.

Oh Pauly, I really hope you are doing ok! It‘s such a hard job. And like others commented - there aren‘t many farriers that even work with rescue horses! And you can‘t forget - these are often horses that are neglected, abused, untrained. And they easily can became a danger to themselves and to people. And we all know the fate of those horses! You can absolutely not compare rescue horses with training a „normal“ horse! It‘s much better the horse is kicking off the rope - than a Human leg. It might look hard - but there is no hitting, the horse doesn‘t get hurt. And it has to learn to get its feet done. Otherwise there is simply no future. Pauly is doing such a phenomenal job, he knows a lot. I really like to listen to his explanations. And I find it very soothing to see all the things around the rescue work, too. Nate is such a handyman! A big thank you to every single one of you helping the animals!

After reading through the comments, I have some thoughts: Pauly is neither held hostage at Pony Tales, nor does he need babysitting. If he was uncomfortable with working with rescue horses, he wouldn't be working with rescue horses. And from watching his no-nonsense, straightforward attitude, I'm pretty sure he's going to say it when he knows he can't handle a horse.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, I have the feeling that often these rescues have such bad feet that waiting until they're ready to be trained could risk serious and lasting injury to the animal.
Pauly probably doesn't just go in to work on difficult horses just for a hoot.

For those who think some of the treatment is too harsh when helping these inexperienced horses. Theyare a danger to themselves and others. That CANNOT be continued. They sometimes have to have
crash tests. These will remember not only the start
the results of these experiences. From fear and
anger to realization of that they are ok. You
must understand what could happen to these horses if allowed to stay a threat to themselves and others. End of life. Difficult choices sometimes have to
    be made.

    • @cattymajiv
      @cattymajiv Рік тому +2

Yes Betty, you're right. Among the viewers who are inexperienced or only a bit experienced with caring for horses throughout their whole life cycle, there is a trend lately to overreact to things that they think might cause a bit of discomfort to the horse. If it were possible to remove all discomfort, we would, but it isn't always possible.
The trend is a direct result of 2 UA-cam horse personalities, RaleighLink and Think Like A Horse. They both make a living by criticizing other horse people. Most of it is caused by RaleighLink, because she is a very attractive young woman in her early 20s, who the female teenagers and teeny boppers all really relate to, and they want to be just like her. She has had her UA-cam channel for 10 years, and she has a heavy emphasis on preventing cruelty to horses, which of course is wonderful.
But the problem is that she has become extremely arrogant. The adoration of her audience has really gone to her head. And it is adoration of the kind that only teenaged girls and very young women are capable of, verging on fanaticism. She is, or claims to be, a veterinary student. She also claims to have been a riding teacher, horse trainer, barn manager, and all around expert. But a 24 yr old person can't possibly be an expert at all those things, as she claims. It just isn't possible! And go to university at the same time as achieving all of that? I'm sorry. But it just ain't true. You can't even be an expert in 1 of them by age 24, no matter when you started riding.
She has done a lot of good work for horses. So it's such a shame that it's become a project focused on building her own ego! She reviews and reacts to videos the audience finds and sends her, with no context at all for them. Some of them are fair evaluations, but if she has a fight with her new husband or something, LOOK OUT! You do not want to be the subject of her review!
Her commentary is sometimes too soft, and at other times it's just nitpicking, but it's often combined with vindictiveness of the very worst kind. Extreme viciousness and outright lies are now a part of her shtick. (Shtick means a style a person uses on stage to stand out from the others.) Even criticisms that are legitimate are put across in the worst possible way. To remain objective she should keep the personal insults and lies out of it. I'm really shocked that she hasn't been sued yet!
But the teenagers and teeny boppers that are so in love with her, and see her as their idol, think it's cool to try and emulate her. So they go all over the horse channels claiming that they see abuse when they just don't understand the circumstances, or the fact that places like family farms and rescues are not always able to create the fantasy of a perfect world, where they have all the knowledge in the world, and access to the best facilities, supplies, equipment, and experts 24/7. They are expecting the perfection that Raleigh seems to demand, so they can be too harsh and judgemental. It should be obvious to anyone that even Raleigh herself can't create this perfect world for her own horse.
Of course cruelty is abhorent! So is neglect. And people do need to be educated that their gaps in knowledge can create great harm to these wonderful, majestic animals! But the critics need to include some realism. If a person or group is trying their best to help, and somebody attacked them as viciously as Raliegh and Think Like A Horse do, they would devasted! Heartbroken! Does that help the situation?
A lot of her criticism is well placed. And a lot of the information she provides is very important. It's usually explained well, including diagrams of horse anatomy etc. Even some of the very harsh criticism is very well placed. Her channel could be such a great resource! But the videos where she goes nuts on someone without knowing any of the facts, and imputing nefarious motives to people who are just doing their best, have become too common for my liking. But her audience just love it, and she knows that. The attack videos get more views, and she gets more praise from her sychophants for them. They're more exciting.
Think Like A Horse uses the same reasoning exactly. Or is it just an excuse for these frustrated, immature people to take out their frustrations on somebody else? He (name unknown) is even more vicious at times, and he seems to hate minorities, especially women. He even yells and screams at times, just full of hatred and anger. But he doesn't have as much of a following among the young aspiring women.
I'm not saying there is no place for activism regarding horse welfare. On the contrary, there should be more of it! But it needs to have a conscience that those 2 channels don't have. You can see the arrogance from Raleigh's opening. Her videos always start with "Hay Bitch!" Who do you think that's directed to? Of course, it's aimed at teenagers who will think it's edgy and funny. It got a laugh out of me too. But it got old really fast. She's definately pandering to teenaged wannabes. A few have horses, and many are older than that, like I am, but the most dedicated ones who try to be like her are the immature kids, and it's them who go around with heavy criticism of anything or everything, and no understanding of the realities involved.
They need to grow up. I know they leave comments, but I hope they also read comments. And if they truly do want to learn about horses, I hope they watch a wide variety of videos. And I hope they read books too, as old fashioned as that may seem.
I'm so tired of the people on YT, in every kind of group, who think that they're an expert after watching 5 or 6 videos. What a ridiculous idea! It takes many years of both hands-on experience and a lot of studying to become an expert at anything! For most of us, including the real experts (which I am not) the more we learn, the more we realize that we have so much MORE to learn. And that instead of criticizing others, we should try to be better ourselves, and kinder to both horses and people.
Here's hoping that Raleigh, Think Like A Horse, and their audiences all grow up. That keep their love of horses, and start to have some balance. That they incorporate reality into their world view. I know it's more pleasant living in a bubble, and I'm as guilty as the next person for wanting to hang onto mine, but we all have to grow up, and to wake up, many times in our lives. It's time for them to grow up and see what harm is being caused by this random spreading of anger, just because the channel owner had a bad day.
Criticism is ok if it's given in proportion to the transgression. An eye for an eye, or a tooth for a tooth is ok. But not a kidney for a toenail, a lung for a peice of hair, an eye for an eyelash, an arm for a fingertip! They need to realize these are real people that are being targetted, sometimes very unfairly. Not always, but sometimes. And that's just as cruel as the abuse they claim to be fighting.

Pauly shouldn't be the one training these horses in the first place. This isn't a positive experience for these horses. They haven't learned anything good from this. This should have been done well before he had to work with them. Or they should be sedated. Putting your farrier in constant danger like this is just stupid. Especially when it can easily be avoided with some basic horsemanship.
Yes, Pauly know what he's doing, but he shouldn't be put in the position to have to fix all this BS.

Often I have thought that no planning or experience at all was involved in a task. Some were big and some were small. And of course we all make mistakes, but zeezus, sometimes I think none of the ones on screen have ever worked with horses before, and who on earth allowed them to do these tasks this way? Is there no preplanning at all in this barn?

utmost admiration for the help you're willing to provide for these mostly badly handled n uncared for horses before they came to the refuge. i've had quite a few stints over the years working with racehorses, both young n old in NZ...incredibly well educated types. most farriers dont have the balls to help out with the types of horses you do. much respect.

Another well done episode. I know that you do not want advice about how to handle the horses. But maybe you can consider using a lick to help Paulie with the difficult horses? The horses that Steve Young sees all love Horslyx, the original flavor. I hate to see Paulie getting bashed around.

I don't understand why some of these horses are not sedated for the Pauly's safey until more training can be done. It also less stressful to the horse.

    • @electrowave114
      @electrowave114 Рік тому +2

Going from other comments, their vet(s) don't have the best availability, which means it's harder to get a horse sedated in a timely manner. As these horses might not have the time to wait for an available vet to sedate them (because of health concerns for the horse), that means trimming without drugs.

@@electrowave114exactly. I the long run sedation does nothing to teach these poor horses nobody wants to harm them, only help them. They have likely come from abusive or neglected backgrounds and have learnt kicking gets them left alone

Goodness some of these horses are so dramatic about their feet, Pauly merely looks at a hoof and they think he's trying to kill them! I know some will be reacting out of trauma and obviously they'll probably have good reasons to be scared. Though for some I think it is just dramatics XD

Thanks for all that hard work that you and all your volunteers and family continue to do.

But then you can't just take in a rescue horse and expect that horse to stand still. It takes time (and patience) to re-train a horse to pick up its feet and be comfortable with it, and some horses are in pain, difficult to stand for them. It just takes time, and a patient farrier who doesn't get upset.
