      I have a 2006 beetle convertible. I recently closed the trunk with a pile of shopping bags in it close to the latch that I can see in the video here. Is it possible that it grabbed a piece of the bag material kind of like a zipper and is telling the control module that it is open? The switch on the door is flacid and the remotes make a sound inside the car and the lights blink as I do it but it does not unlock the trunk. Any insight as to how I should go about this? Thank you for providing us with your knowledge. Gigi

      Sorry about the late reply. If the shopping bag is of thicker material, then yes.
      Release action of the motor should still work as it should (I think). Try to get a good grip and pull hard. Maybe a second person to press the button while you pull?

      @EXOVCDS Thank you so much. I will try it. In the meantime is the fuse involved? I checked one fuse that I think is central lock and it is functional. Should I be checking another fuse? Also do you have any idea where an emergency pull rear lid release could be in the car cabin itself other than by the door opening as stated here on utube for the newer models? Listen I appreciate any help at any time. I am a bit concerned because my lug lock key is in the trunk and my tire was really low but took air. Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

    I'll have to try replacement of the trunk latch. 2007 volkswagen beetle hit the fob or trunk release on door, truck opens but not fully release the lock. Just today the light on dash stays lit as if truck isn't locked although it seem to be completely shut and its causing the alarm to go off after locking the car.

    Great video, thanks! My wife's 2003 Beetle (UK) has a "reluctant" boot opening - it just opens a little then catches so you can't get it any further open - you have to activate either the remote or the door switch a few times to get it open. Do you reckon this would be the latch or the actuator?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 років тому

      Best way to know is to remove the anel and watch things in action. You can disconnect the actuator from the latch and open it manually to see if the latch behaves differently.
      Thank you for watching!

      Hi, I’m posting this for other people as I see this is a few years old now. I had a boot that opened the latch OK with the remote but it wouldn’t with the unlock using the button on the drivers side. I saw a post telling me to look for an 8mm bolt on the hinge mechanism, and in wind them out a few millimetres. This solved my issue! When I looked at them, one side was 2.4mm out the other 3.2m. I unwound them to about 4mm on both sides. Works perfectly now. It’s down to the gas struts losing some power, this adjustment just gives some resistance and helps the strut. Just do a few turns at a time. Hope this helps!

    The dash light says the boot hatch is open and it trigers the alarm on the car. This could be as the relay is in the latch the last time the boot would not opern I found two broken wires to the wire plug for the latch when they were resoldered everything worked fine. Try to tease the wires out of the plug I found they were broken. If you damage the insert or can't solder the wire because its deep in the plug you can find the inserts in computer motherboard wire sockets. Maplin used to sell the single pin wires don't know where to get them know but I have 20 left just in case it happens again.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 років тому

      The micro switch in the latch is a common failure item. The Alarm module looks for a signal from that switch... corrosion can interrupt the signal and the alarm module will think the trunk is open (when it is not) setting the alarm or causing the waring light to stay on. Replacing the latch and insuring that the connector is not corroded, should take car of that type of issue. I have also seen bad connections / corrosion at the wires in the brown connector at 2:50 (under the H of the watermark) that caused trunk opening issues.

    Thanks for posting this video. Something that wasn't clear is why the actuator started working when you replaced the latch. Is the power to the actuator controlled by the latch some how?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 років тому

      David Carroll The latch sends an open / closed signal to the central locking module. If the module thinks that the trunk is already open (because of a faulty latch) then the module will not send a signal to the actuator.

    • @davidcarroll4850
      @davidcarroll4850 6 років тому

      DOH! I just now saw you included an explanation about the "faulty micro switches" at the closing of this video. Sorry for missing that.
      So, my situation is very similar to the one in this video. Neither the trunk release button on the driver side door or the key FOB releases the trunk. I do hear a clicking sound similar to the blinker / hazard signal and see the rear lights flash - as shown in your video.
      I ordered a new OEM trunk latch thinking that was the problem for my daughter's 2010 VW Beetle Convertible. However, the actuator did not respond when I plugged in the new latch and set it to closed position. All the symptoms were the same.
      I did notice that the new latch body was about a half inch shorter than the original faulty latch. However, everything else about the new latch was identical to the one in the car.
      One difference between your video and my situation is I was able to use a multimeter to see that signal is sent to the plug for the actuator motor when pressing the trunk release button on the remote. It seems that power is only sent to the actuator plug when the latch is in the closed position.
      I ordered a new actuator to see if this would resolve the problem. Unfortunately, nothing changes when plugging in the new actuator and new latch. I've also tried using the new actuator with the original latch.
      One thing I noticed is I'm unable to get a signal on the multimeter when testing the plug for the latch. I was able to verify continuity on this latch plug, just no voltage reading.
      Something else that is strange is while I am able to get a voltage reading on the actuator plug, I am unable to get a continuity reading on the actuator plug.
      At this point, based on your explanation of the "faulty micro switch", I get the feeling the replacement latch is also faulty.
      Any thoughts you can share based on my details would be greatly appreciated. I wish there was a way I could send you something for your expertise.

      I had similar problem with my 2002 New Beetle. Bought both new latch and new actuator. New latch did not activate with original actuator. New latch did not activate with new actuator. Then decided to test original actuator with a 9 volt battery after I removed it from the hatch. The original actuator did work when it was hooked up to the 9 volt battery so it was still good. I then reattached the original actuator back in the hatch along with the original latch. Amazingly, the hatch now opens both with the remote and the button on the driver's door. I think that testing the actuator with the 9 volt battery somehow "kick-started" the actuator to work again. I was able to return both the new actuator and new latch.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Рік тому

      I haven't seen that video. A wiring diagram should be able to determine if driver window operation is a factor. If rear lid button signal goes straight to comfort control module... then driver window operation does not play a role. If rear lid release button signal goes to driver window module first and then to the comfort module, then maybe.

I have changed the actuator, and tried another second hand boot latch (from car yard who said it worked) and no change unfortunately. Just a thought but it could be the Convenience Control Unit. Water commonly gets in here causing alsorts of issues with minor things on the car. On the RHD model it is fitted right up behind the dashboard on the drivers side. Water comes in on a standard model so I imagine a soft top to suffer this issue even more.

    This is very helpful. Is there a way to troubleshoot this if you don't have a replacement latch to test with?
    My trunk won't open. Key fob remote causes rear lights to blink, but no trunk latch motor activation. The trunk switch in the driver's door gives no reaction at all.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 роки тому

      You can attach a "noid light" or test light across the harness plug for the motor and look for the light to activate (indicating control). Check all connectors for possible corrosion... which can cause resistance that won't allow the motor to operate. Using a scan tool, you can check for related fault codes and view / verify "input signals" (should be good since lights flicker) as well as door / trunk / hood open & closed status. With all doors / trunk & hood closed... the alarm should beep when you lock the car... if it does not, then the comfort control module is "waiting" for one of them to close (thinks that something is open). The driver door button won't seem to do anything, IF the comfort control module thinks that the trunk is already open.

      I finally got to check individual connections and found that the female 3-pin connector from the end of the wiring harness to the latch mechanism is corroded. @@EXOVCDS I just fixed my trunk on my 2002 Beetle Sport.
      It was not working at all. The driver's side switch and key fob remote were useless. (I could still open the gas tank lid by the electronic door switch.) The key fob caused only the brake lights to blink briefly. No actuator noise could be heard. All other remote key functions were okay. No dash warning lights. I could lock the car remotely, one horn beep, and the alarm did not go off.
      I took a look. There was severe corrosion between the latch sensor and the three prong connector at the end of the wiring harness, so I cut the connector off and cleaned the male end connections that are housed in the latch. I then redid these connections with alligator clips of similar gauge. Nothing happened. I cut off another centimeter of wire and tried again. No result. I removed the alligator clips. The wires are dead-ended for now as I am waiting for a new plastic connector.
      I took a look at the remaining cables and connectors. The all looked good. I figured the actuator was dead. I unplugged it and checked it with a 9V radio battery. It worked fine. Then I replugged the connection. Suddenly the whole latch system worked perfectly both with the remote and with the switch in the door panel.
      The funny thing is that the trunk latch itself is totally disconnected now. There is no wiring going to the microswitch in the latch.

      Trina Jeffryes You'll have to try and get a look down in there... usually what happens is that a piece of plastic breaks off & falls into the latch linkage, which hinders full movement of the release lever. Use a mirror to look down into the latch mechanism. Look for something that is obstructing the movement (move the lever while looking inside). If you don't see anything that is getting wedged.... force it. If the trunk hasn't been opened in a long time, it could just be stuck to the trunk seal. In that case, give the lid a good push while holding the release lever up.

      You can see the little metal clip at the end of the handle. The clip bites into the metal lever inside the backrest and into the handle. Grab the handle as best you can and pull. You might have to wiggle up & down to get it to break free. Once off, make sure the new handle has the metal clip In the tip. I like to keep the clip sticking out a little... then line the handle up with the lever inside the seat and then push the handle into place.

    i have the same symptoms - when you press on key or pull the boot release it only makes a sound but nothing happens. could it be anything else or do i just buy the same part as you did. i didnt quite get the testing with bulb - it there is no electricity going to the mechanism, wouldnt the problem be before it? Ive seen other people replacing the actuator - how to test which part i need?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 років тому

      If the trunk does not open, you'll need to open it like I did (remove the panel and move the linkage with your hand). Once the trunk is open, you can check what is working / what is not. If you hear something moving when the remote button is pushed, then the "signal / control" to the motor is OK. Something is either stuck or disconnected... not allowing the motor to move the linkage. Start with taking the panel off and checking all the linkage... sometimes it's just a matter of lubing the linkage with WD40 or similar, to free things up.

      Just checked with multimeter - there is 12v going to actuator when boot release is pressed. but actuator isnt moving or making any sound. Must be the actuator??

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 років тому

      Harcix Did you measure across the two wires? Is the actuator extended or retracted? On some motors, the polarity changes.. meaning that the actuator is used to open the latch as well as lock it. Some motors will extend automatically some need the reverse polarity. If you checked for power by placing a test light on one wire at a time (ground of test light at body), check across the two pins. It could be that there is a broken wire. If the wiring is ok, test the motor on a bench with small jumper cables... see if you can get it to extend & retract. If it works on a bench, then the micro switch in the latch might be bad. If it does not behave correctly on the bench, then yes, might need a motor / actuator.

    • @Harcix
      @Harcix 7 років тому

      I checked only those 2 wires and also 2 out of 3 wires going to the latch. Latch should be ok as it shows on dash if its open and it gets 12v continuous, also - when latch is open, the actuator doesnt get 12v. Only when latch is closed and release button pressed it gets 12v (and polarity on multimeter didnt change). Actuator is in retracted position. I checked across the 2 pins only as i didnt want to short something by touching body.

    My problem is the boot opens with the key, but the switch on the door doesn't work at all. In fact the switch is completely dead, with no even a noise when pressed, which makes me wonder, it could be a power problem.

      Do the lights flash when hitting the remote to unlock the trunk?
      Did you check / verify both "power & ground" wires are ok... follow them from the motor along the harness and check for corrosion / bad connections. When you lock the vehicle (all doors, hood, trunk closed), does the horn beep once? If not, then it is waiting for something to close (thinks trunk or one of the other items is still open). Using a scan tool like VCDS or OBDEleven, one can "view" door, hood, trunk status to see if it is open or closed. One can also use a scan tool to see "button activation".

      @@Brisou394 I'm pretty sure that there is no relay. The Comfort Control Module is what triggers the motor. Depending on how / where you are checking voltage, you could be seeing a lower voltage due to a "voltage drop" (bad connection, not with meter, but with wiring being checked). If you are checking across the unplugged motor connector, use a body ground to recheck / confirm power feed voltage. If voltage is better, check the ground side.
