    I feel like e-bikes would be perfect for those that are newer or heavier riders that live in hilly areas. Nothing is more discouraging than running out of gears and to still be struggling in zone 4-5. The assistance could be everything you need to get over it and keep riding.

      I've chatted a bit about this with one of my local shops, and that's exactly what they say: that it opens the sport up to people who otherwise wouldn't feel comfortable in it. I love hearing that.

      Yeah, i am heavy and i am riding an Orbea Gain(e-bike). Also i am new to riding so this is just perfect for me. I can keep up with my mates on hills. On the flat im going over 25 so theres no assistance and i am also turning it off on flats because i want to get better and fit.
      I know that maybe the motor is just an excuse but for my body weight and i am being an lazy person for like 20 years it gives me the motivation to ride. Since last year i am riding like four times a week and already seeing big efforts. I decided that my next bike is going to be a regular one.

      How cool would it be if you could connect your heart rate strap to the e bike controller. Select a zone you wanna ride in and it automatically adjusts the support for you. (I know that there is a wheel hub which can create resistance to do this)

    I’m so glad you did this. When I was younger I did a great deal of cycling both recreational and some criterium racing. As I got older, I rode occasionally and did the odd Century Ride for charity. I had to have major back surgery at about ten years ago. Recovery was hard and I gained a great deal of weight. When allowed by my doctor, I began riding again. At 52 and overweight, it was hard to keep on cycling. I wanted to get fit and ride but it lacked all the things I love about riding. I finally bit the bullet and bought a Trek Crossrip+. Suddenly, on full boost, I could ride at 25 mph. I still have to put out enough power that the bike will match me but all of the excitement is back. I’m down 50lbs and will be doing a charity ride in the Fall on an unassisted bike. Everyone has their own needs and their own circumstances. These bikes have filled a huge hole in the cycling world and only for the better.

    Well I'm almost 60 way to heavy and suffer from arthritis and live in a very hilly area and tbh couldn't use a normal bike where I live. I've bought 1 e bike and built 3 in the past, and they are fantastic, it makes cycling fun again and if you're not fit gives you a brilliant workout. They're not for young fit people really, but if they want to ride one then go for it. Anything that gets people out on a bike is good news ( during normal times obviously). I used to ride 100 miles in a day when I was a young lad, but sadly for me those days have gone. Good vid and that's a lovely looking bike, no chunky battery.

    • @03timdol
      @03timdol 4 роки тому +3

      I think it is a shame that there is a bit of a stigma around young people riding e-bikes (not pointing the finger at you as you were fair above). I have a racer and a hardtail but I also chose to build a full sus e-bike for some fun but mainly to commute on. It gives me the option to get to work in more comfort and to get less sweaty on route but I still get as much exercise as I chose to put in. Also gave me less excuse to take the car on the days where I didn't feel like riding as I just use a little more boost than normal. Definitely underrated for all ages!

    • @MFLuder-me1vn
      @MFLuder-me1vn 4 роки тому +1

      I'd still say they're good for young fit people. When I do leg day at the gym sometimes my thighs are maxed out and sore from heavy squatting. But I can still take my bike because then I can use top peddle assist or just use the motor and not peddle at all. That's what I love about them, the versatility.

      60 isn't old. we have 60 70 and even an 82 year old that ride strong in our group. I am 57 and feel like a young buck so I don't understand thinking the game is over when you are 60.
      But I think it is great you enjoy your ebike and get out. Just no reason to also not reach higher.

      Very true although I wouldn't ride it. Where I live, if you're still young, you'd get made fun of for riding an e-bike. Even if you didn't get made fun of I still think since I'm young, not very unfit and have no medical conditions, I personally shouldn't ride an e-bike. But this is obviously a personal thought and choice.

      Besides e bikes can be ridden either way you want. You can ride it like a normal bike and ride it assisted only on days when you're absolutely shattered or up really tough hills.
      With some e bikes youre still doing the exact same work, you're just doing it faster.
      Like you're still riding as hard as you can, there's no difference in effort you use, the only difference is now you're going maybe 30km/h vs 18km/h so all you're doing is just getting to your destination faster, not 'easier'

People say its cheating but you can just do it faster, as you rightly said in the video. There seems to be people who forget, that riding a bike should be fun, regardless of the bike you are on!!!

    I've got an e-bike I use for work and some minor recreation. I've found on the flats it doesn't do anything unless you're going into a head wind or you're absolutely exhausted. Being able to rocket up hills or use the motor to assist you when you're tired to get you home is fantastic. I'd imagine the fitness aspect also balances out, sure you won't be doing all the effort yourself, but it gives you confidence to go further without getting as tired, the extra distance more than makes up for the lack of manual input.

    Good job once again Cam. E-bikes get a bad rap from roadies. If roadies were traditionalist they should ride bikes from the 1900's. Get rid of their electronic shifting. I did buy an e-bike for my wife. She's able to go on longer rides with me and I now draft behind her. So longer rides equals better fitness.

      @@John...44... it depends on the e Bike, some e bikes you still put in same effort, you. Just go faster.

    Massive thumbs up for e-bikes from me! I'm young(ish), relatively fit, love cycling but just needed a bit more speed to coerce me out of the car more regularly. For me, 250W doesn't cut it - I converted my MTB with a 1000W crank motor, and it's absolutely fantastic, if not entirely legal. If I want a hard workout, I leave it all hooked up but switched off, in which case I work harder than a non-ebike rider as I'm lugging an extra 10-15 kg around with me, plus the resistance of the motor. If I want a light/moderate workout and a longer ride, I'll use 20-40% assist which will give 20 mph given a respectable cadence, and will get about 70 miles battery range. If I'm in a bit of a rush and need to get across town but still want to keep my legs moving, I can crank up to 80-100% assist which will give 30 mph and thus allow for using the roads. One way system short cuts? No problem, hop off and walk it through. I can do a 14 minute car journey in 12 minutes on the bike. Have passed and been passed by numerous police vehicles, and have had no grief from them due to riding sensibly. Definitely recommend, but not sure a 250W limited one would be versatile enough for me.

      I just bought an emtb this year to go along my regular stumpjumper for some variety and days I just want to have fun and noticed that it's actually turned into a really good training tool for the regular bike.
      I make it a point to see if I can do my rides in the lowest assistance mode and try to see little battery I can use. But still have the higher modes if I need. I've been getting good exercise on it actually and since I can get out on the bike more often it's been great working on my bike handling skills as the motor doesn't help there and has been good training for the regular bike. More miles is more practice cornering and jumping and technical riding, etc. Which all helps when I take my regular stumpjumper out

    As far as i"m aware, E-Bike Assistance is limited up to 15.5 MPH under EU Rules, so a Rider of your Calibre, (Elite) will only receive Assistance on this route on a Climb, or a Strong Headwind. You were just 1.1MPH quicker on the E-Bike for the Route which was probably on the Climb only as i"m pretty sure an Excellent Rider such as yourself could maintain a Quicker Speed of 15.5 MPH into a Headwind. In effect, you could have turned the Assistance Off Completely and just Turned it on for the Climb and got the same Stress Results. I"m pretty sure though that if you Placed a New Slightly out of Shape Rider (You must know someone) on the same Test the Results would Reveal the True Value of E-Bikes. Now that would be Worth Watching. P.S. Love the Vids and Glad you"re back. Doubt we"ll see you at the Rattler this Year, now that is where you do need an E-Bike. LOL.

You can choose whether you really push, just keep the power low and when you don`t feel like you want to hammer yourself on climbs just up the power. Rides feel fast and are faster . Most people ride their ebikes more, as you simply have more positive feelings about going for a ride.

    I broke my ankle over a year ago and never really rode a lot of climbs. The ebike helped me to get back into the cycling and gives me a boost when training for hills.

    Just to add to the interesting comments in this thread - at 73 years, as a former competitive cyclist an e-road bike has got me back in the saddle. I still have an 8 kg race bike but the geometry is wrong, its uncomfortable on bad surfaces and I no longer enjoy it. As a result I rode it infrequently. But the e-road bike (also full carbon) with fatter tyres is much more relaxed and really comfortable and the battery gets me over hills that would otherwise end the ride. As a result I use the e-bike frequently and am progressively cutting the amount of e-assistance on hills. So the question - 'can I get fit on an e-bike?' is easy to answer. I am getting much fitter because I actually ride the bike rather than leaving it hanging on a hook.

    Stumbled upon this by accident. I have a carrera crossfire ebike that I cycle to work and back on daily ( 12 miles - 6 each way) Im a postman and have my bike on full assistance, takes me 20 mins each way. I arrive at work fresh but feel like I have ridden. I get dog abuse from my mates "oh its not a proper bike, no excercise etc" Thing is is haven't used my car in over 12 months and have racked up over 2000 miles on my bike. I am in no way a keen cyclist, I have a voodoo hoodoo in the shed that hasn't been used in 5 years. But this in a way shows that I get the same excercise as I would from a normal bike. You can be lazy and still have excercise. I think I annoy some of the lycra cyclists round here when a fully loaded postman pat lookalike goes by them but we all have a chuckle. Keep up the good work, I enjoyed your fly to france and cycle home video! Vinny

    it did feel fun passing real cyclists on their real bikes on my cargo bike with a cordless fan and big duffel bag strapped to the back lol, super non aero but 1600w of peak power does not care about aero. i ride this bike for exercise too on weekends but just use very low pedal assist, 50-65 watts, basically just enough to compensate for the insane inefficiencies of the bike and make it feel less like the giant tank that it is. the motor is geared very low so it cant go all that fast even with that much power anyway. my non e road bike absolutely smokes it down hills.

    Good video only thing would have been nice to know a tiny bit more about the electric bike such how long battery lasts. I presume the way it works is ut fills the difference between the watts you produce and the set amount? Keep up the good work

      The Orbea Gain has the same system. On full power over undulating roads i get 60 miles avg and with the range extender another 30 ish. When climbing in the alps, col de Mollard on full power and 6% left

    I seem to remember in the early 90’s some people thought that front suspension forks on MTB were going to be the death of Cycling as we know it. An e bike is just that another bike option. Should we not hate anyone with a carbon bike or dura ace as they give distinctive advantages.

    Is it me or do you guys also get better workout with a tailwind? Not sure if it is just mental but as soon as I turn around from a head wind to a tail I can ride comfortably at a higher heart rate. Headwinds just sap my energy and no matter how low my gear my pedal stroke is labored and everything is out of sorts.

      Mark Smith there are separate segments for ebikes

    • @Gamingoodz
      @Gamingoodz 4 роки тому +1

      Ebikes don't get segment times. On my E-MTB I use the app for it to record my rides to strava for training and it automatically puts them into the ebike category. I'ts kind of a shame that I can't see my segments though in the ebike category you don't even get times at all on segments. I would hope that just split it up so you have regular bike and ebike specific segments so I can still at least track my times on my ebike rides to see if my bike handling skills are improving.
      Maybe I'm missing something but so far all my ebike rides have no segments recorded at all.

  • @mateagoston8145

    You can get fit by riding one for sure, but the more important question: Is it truly worthy to buy one? You indeed flew up Stoney Lane, but the overall avg speed of your e-bike ride was like 4% quicker which is barely a difference. Well, it can be worthy if you live in a super hilly area and would fancy to ride up and down Monte Zoncolan on a holiday. Otherwise I would rather choose a regular bike or a DIY e-bike with a 1500W engine, hahaha!

    I actually built my own e-bike it was illegal but very fun I didnt use it because it was fast it did 35mph but i used it to get into road biking it was built on a mtb frame but i could do a day riding with my mates and they were in road bikes so without it i truly wouldnt have got into the sport of road biking, and yes it did make me fit even tho it had a twist throttle I would always try to assist it with the twist throttle, my power had to be so much higher beacuse it weighed so much, I still use it now and again but most of the time I'm on the road bike, oh and if you guys were wondering no the police honestly dont give a shit aslong as you are respectful and ride at a sensible speed it's great, thanks for reading guys
    If anyone has any questions about it please ask me in the comments, cheers Dan

    No surprise. At this speed the motor did not support most of the time. So you needed more power to accellerate the ebike. But in the hills the motor helped a lot.
