My family's from Macau, and you nailed this. I'm impressed. Not too many people know about our culture (they only really know about Hong Kong/mainland China or they see it simply as a gambling center). This was great.
I was born and raised in macao. My whole family immigrated to the US in the late 60s. Since my first return 37 years later, I have been back to macao a half dozen times . It was transformed from a sleepy quiet town to a bustling city in the original site to the expansive development across the water to kotai. I just found out that there’s a panda pavilion at kotai since 2011, free admission. I would love to spend a day there in my next visit.
Great video! I’ve been living in mainland China since 2018 and haven’t traveled much due to the pandemic. I look forward to my trip to Macau next week. Thank you so much for your video.
9:54 I'm Portuguese and we sure have those pork buns (I wouldn't know that's how you'd call that in English haha). That's the kind of thing you'd usually see here at big gatherings being sold, like on the entrance of football games and such. I just don't think we bread the slice at all. Or we wouldn't call it a bifana if it's breaded. We do usually put the bun in bread, but not bread them.

As a Macao local, I think your video is pretty accurate and unique. I would also mention most restaurants/shops accept visa, master and union pay, but not AE. AE works fine in the Cotai resort hotels though. Your bonus point got me! Good job Lol
That shot where he's standing in front of those dilapidated buildings and you see that gigantic Lisboa Casino tower over everything in the distance ( 8:20 ) , that literally looks like it's a shot from Blade Runner or something :)
Went to Macau last year. This is a very nice and accurate video. There's a paid tourist bus that goes around the popular places . I thought it was a nice way to take in most of the famous sights in 1 day. The cotai strip with all its humongous casinos was absolutely unreal... Macau is definitely worth a visit
If you are Hilton Gold/Diamond, highly recommend staying at Macao Conrad. They will often upgrade you to a huge suite. 1) Macau is like HK. 2 parts (Macau and Taipa/Cotai/Coloane) 2) Take the free casino buses. 3) Macau is safe.
5:17 Actually there is an exchange difference of about 3% between the HK dollar and the MOP (in favor of the HKD). If you spend your money in HKD in the tourist areas, (casinos, restaurants, massage parlors, Koi Kei bakery, etc), they will take the HKD at par (which is a rip off). If you go to any of the inner city stores and buy stuff and pay with Hong Kong dollars, the merchants would likely accept the money at a premium and give you back the difference. If you go to Macau and have Hong Kong dollars with you, it may be advisable to check out the currency exchange shops and find out how much of a premium would they offer for Hong Kong dollars in exchange for Macau Patacas. For any big ticket items or larger expenditures, that 3% can amount to quite a bit.
I love your videos Chris. You and your wife provide an amazing service of inspiring people to visit new places and learn about new cultures. Macau also has a nice World Heritage walk that I walked and highly recommend. People can do this at their own pace. Of course, there are some incredible tucked away food establishments along the way where typically the locals eat. The food is fantastic and the prices are reasonable.
I’m Portuguese and I live in United Kingdom now. It’s a shame that we are in lockdown because it would definitely a place I’d love to visit. Great video. I bet you went to eat Pasteis de nata at Belém. 🥰
I will definitely have to check out Macau sometime especially since it is very accessible from Hong Kong. I don't gamble, but the sights look quite nice!

I was in Macau last year. Our plan was just to stay in Hong Kong but we spent 2 days in Hong Kong and 2 days in Macau as well. We went to Macau for a day trip but it was so mesmerizing which force us to spend an another day. I apologize for my question but is Hong Kong & Macau, both are grabbed by China? because their culture is really different from mainland China. I don't want to hurt anyone's feeling so don't be offensive (Chinese people)

How about the fact that there’s no Airbnb in Macau? It was our family’s first time to go to Macau last June 2019. I was trying to look for one but I came across an article that the government somewhat favored the casinos so they disabled airbnb to encourage tourists to check in hotels.

Here's a tip, old doesn't mean bad, some really old hotels that are cheap are actually nearly as good as new ones. Just make sure to NEVER go to a shady hotel, I would recommend 3-4 star+ hotels. There is a bunch of hotels clustered together in a HUGE plot called the "Galaxy" there are a few cheap 5 star hotels there. Also remember, Macau still has a mafia, although they aren't as prominent, going into shady areas would probably get you locked up and sold for money.
