Stay humble, Build something. Word. Love it. I’ll add it to my list right behind “leave no pencil marks”. A big fear of mine realized when I saw your Kapex in pieces. I have one of the original series as well and its a core tool for site work (I’m in the middle of a 300 lin foot wainscot job at the moment). I’ve got a Felder slider in the shop so don’t use it when there but I’m dependent on it for site work (wondering about adding an Erica...) and I’m sure you’re aware of Festool’s long lead times for orders. I enjoy your build videos (all your posts but in particular I get ideas from your work - reinforcement for legs in this one). Question, where did you find that little plane for your pencils? Strong work, I look forward to watching your next post. Thank-you.
Hey thank you for watching! I’m grateful for your support! That pencil sharpener is called the hovel. It’s a bit of a novelty, I would recommend a mobius + ruppert sharpener
Hey Mike, if you were wondering, that shirt is from another fine furniture maker, Erik Curtis. If you have the time, definitely check out Erik’s channel - but make sure you watch all our videos first. 😉
My question is why the spline in the leg, won’t the opposing grain directions work against each other? End up splitting the leg right off? Would be curious to see it go through a few season changes. Nice work!
Think about a massive bow tie keeping a check together. The opposing grain should be doing the same thing but doesn’t. I. An think of one specific example of this. I did a 20’ outdoor slab table. It was 40” wide and I had to put in massive bow ties to keep the checks from growing. This was years ago and the bow ties are still holding the slab together. I could be wrong but I think this is similar.
@@WilliamDouglasCo agreed, bow ties work well in slabs and table tops where there is a fair amount of material but in this case you have maybe a 2” wide leg with a 1” wide spline and minimal material on either end, then you have fact that the grain runs perpendicular to the shape of the leg which creates a week spot...very interested to see where this breaks on your test video.
Cool to see a build video from you. Great camera work, obviously great build your stuff is always awesome! I just watched the tour video few weeks ago?! N already gettin booted?!!

Such a bummer about the shop; hope the new one brings even better things your way. Quick question...what kind of marking gauge were you using? Been in the market and want to check it out. My media guy never finished it and he bailed with all of the footage. I am planning to completely redo the series when I get some time. Sorry about that
Great video! I do have a question, what is the water/alcohol for when you were pairing with the chisels? Not sure if I've seen that before. Thanks again! Keep up the great work!
@@WilliamDouglasCo I figured it was something like that... but what does the alcohol do for the water when applying it? Does the water slow down the alcohol from evaporating giving you a longer time to work?
@@anthonydtobias the alcohol evaporates really quickly. The water takes longer. Mixing the two compromises the characteristics of both. Why does it work? Think of wet paper, it’s weaker. So is wet wood.
Lovely really elegant work. However, how strong are the legs? Two people, er being active, could easily mean 170 kg of weight plus additional kinetic energy and rocking stresses....
Sorry to hear about you having to move your shop. You've had a few consecutive crappy events lol. Sucks man. On another note... I've never seen that in-lay across the weakened joint due to the grain direction. I'm definitely gonna keep that in my bag of tricks. Where did you learn that one?
Thanks my brotha it definitely has been challenging. I’m hopeful for our future though.. this was just another quick stepping stone. That was just an idea I had off the fly. I ran it by my Crew and everyone said.. “makes sense let’s try it” I want to do some testing on it and make I video that show a pressure test with and without.
@@WilliamDouglasCo I understand lol. I worked for 6 years of testing to be able to build a thin, stable, more water resistant end grain cutting board that doesn't expand or contract with moisture. I dumped maybe 100k total, and maybe 1000 hours over that 6 years into it. Failed many many times. Eventually I got it tho! And now I have a patent pending on it. I consider myself to be a "wood scientist". And with that territory comes a whole bunch of failure lol. But every time it failed I tweeked it a little bit and kept at it. Don't worry about the failures brother. Just keep adjusting it and letting it settle in the brain and jump back in the fire! I think that joint will work, man. Even if you gotta modify the placement of it and gotta extend it out or change it's shape or something.
Hey Bruno. My kapex died of old age. I’ve had it for a really long time. I bought it before I had a tablesaw so I used it for my finish cuts. In that case, I do think they Kapex is worth it. I now have a good tablesaw and sled so I don’t use the KAPEX for anything but rough cuts now. In this case it’s cheaper so would have been just fine
Thank you man, I appreciate it. The lathe work has been my zen. I’m not a fan of riving knives because we work with a lot of hardwoods. (Unpopular vote)
Oh fuuuuck. I just commented on the new shop tour video a minute ago. At least moving doesn't take a ton of time and $$$... That is rough. I do have a couple questions from the build. What is the 50/50 alcohol water mix for? Did the legs go on with glue or are they just riding on those 3 dominos?
Yeah the move almost killed us but instead it made us stronger 💪🏻 The 50/50 solution softens the grain making it easier to pare the end grain. The joint is glued and clamped up, not just dominos
As always, looking good. The cinematography is killer. That first song I'm not so sure it should be in a woodworking video more of a strip club kind of song. lol. Good luck on the move.
Awe Dogs sorry for the Pause again having to move Shop again! Sucks but hey good time to purge and re-evaluate what the essentials 🤷🏽 happy trekking to the new shop Guys :)
I was going to say that this video is porn for woodworkers but its more then that. This is actually a very beautiful & sensual piece of art. Thank you!
We had no lease agreement. The deal was that he would eventually need the space but had no idea when so we kept it open. We were both thinking it would’ve been a few years but it ended up being six months
That's weird I turned new yahkee workshop on and bob villa was doing all of norm's work!! If you get that you are a true wood guy. Sorry to hear about moving again! But at least your still not doing epoxy shit!!! Cheers
@@carlosvalentine4939 it depends on what you are doing with it. It had a good run for us. When I bought it I didn’t have a tablesaw yet and I was using it for finish cuts. Now that I have a good tablesaw and sled I only use it for rough cuts. That being said, I could have probably went with a much cheaper miter saw and been just as happy
Josh! That is a great question. That is an experiment that I’m doing, and I plan on having another video soon talking about why I did that. Basically the green being horizontal the entire length of the board makes four week points at the top of the feet. I have made several of these beds and I’ve never had an issue, but the concern is always there. This was an attempt to strengthen the structure of the legs by adding vertical grain going against the horizontal grain. If that doesn’t make sense I will definitely do a better job explaining it in the upcoming video.
@@WilliamDouglasCo Not using push blocks when using the jointer and having his fingers dangerously close to the spindle..! Then to do the very same thing on the table saw! It is a matter of time till that dude sticks his finger where it shouldn’t be. Given the time you take for perfection of fit up, the cleanliness of your shop(s), I was surprised to see such careless wood shop techniques.

Really appreciate all the love 🙏🏼🙏🏼 this channel is a great reflection of who I am and that doesn’t sit well with a lot of people. So.. thank you for the support and encouragement!
Nicely shot. I’m not sold on the design though. Having long lengths like that on their flat with no support- what’s gonna stop the sides from convexing over time?
I appreciate that, thanks for watching nonetheless. I’ve had these beds in the wild for years and haven’t had any issues.
I was wondering where you've been & I would've never guessed it was out looking for another shop! Sucks you're having to move again, but like you said, it could end up being better for you in the long run. The build was top shelf as usual and you've definitely figured out quickly how to work the camera as the video was stunning. Great work WD! Now go start packing boxes...I'm ready for the next shop tour! Ha..Best of luck bud.
Hahah I always enjoy reading your comments 😆
The trick is going to be packing / moving / doing a TI / while also keeping media coming every week. 😱
nice handwork, moving shops sucks but every time you move you can tweak the shop that much better(looking at the glass half full)
Absolutely. This shop is the first one that I am really excited to be in
Apologies you have to move again. Can you please take the basketball hoop to the new place. That one video you posted shooting hoop was epic!! Also I’m curious to understand what happened to the Kapex. Awesome work, man I wish I could cut wood like you. 👍
Thank you my man! Appreciate the support. The kapex just died of old age but my guy just got it up and running again today. Replaced a bunch of parts on it that wore out
1 month, one month ago shop tour. 😲. I hope you sign a contract on the new shop for at least 3 years 😬😬. Good luck with moving to the new shop. Ow and love the build 👊🏽
We signed a 3 year lease! Excited to settle in. Hopefully after this 3 year lease we will be in a position to buy a space.
Would you consider filming a class on chair building ?? You could then make a digital copy for sale . It would be so awesome to offer that for people like myself who has no way of participating due to life and geographic location ???
Thank you brother
Awesome video
I’ll definitely try to figure this out. Keep an eye out and join our mailing list.
👍🏽🤩
@@mkscustomcreations1061 I hear ya. It very well may have been a bad move. We shall see
Cool to see a build video from you. Great camera work, obviously great build your stuff is always awesome! I just watched the tour video few weeks ago?! N already gettin booted?!!
Yep! They want me out immediately 😂
Sorry about the fact you need to move. Like my father always say everything happens for a reason and theres always more positive than negative outcomes in life so all will be good. Awesome video it flows very nice and its a pretty original presentation for a ´´woodworking’´ crowd. Really appreciated viewing it. This is a true expression, in cinema of your true high artistic side. Very nice!
Thank you for taking the time to drop a comment. I love hearing that the work we put into this is appreciated. We are definitely staying positive and as long as we continue to have a supportive community we will continue to push through. Thanks again.
@@WilliamDouglasCo I truly hope you get what you deserve don’t know about the community but I can guarantee you I will be here I’ve always enjoyed your chanel. Be proud you have a unique talent on top of hard worker ( it takes time to deliver such quality)👍🏻
@@ericsimpson4045 really appreciate it. The support means everything to us. 🙏🏼
Great video and a really awesome end result too on the frame!! One day my goal is to build our bed as well.
Question… what are the wood planes? I was thinking cool Japanese planes and then you started pushing and my mind was blown haha
Such mastery; didn’t start woodworking until I was 55 and am sure I will never reach this level of skill but man, I love watching what is possible and what you create; thanks for the great content. Such a bummer about the shop; hope the new one brings even better things your way. Quick question...what kind of marking gauge were you using? Been in the market and want to check it out. Thanks much!
I appreciate the love! This video was a beast to bring to life for n the quality we did. Love to see that it is appreciated.
That marking gauge is called the tite-mark mini and is made by glen drake tools
this bed is gorgeous! can a headboard be added?
Will we ever get a video of you finishing the kodee 3 chair, like glue up and refining?
My media guy never finished it and he bailed with all of the footage. I am planning to completely redo the series when I get some time. Sorry about that
@@WilliamDouglasCo where can I see a photo of the table you guys were working on also?
Thanks.
Can you please explain the 50/50 water/alcohol mix you sprayed? Killer video btw
Thank you Josh! The 50/50 mix softens the grain making it easier to pare the end grain. Sweet little trick I learned from an old man
Great video! I do have a question, what is the water/alcohol for when you were pairing with the chisels? Not sure if I've seen that before. Thanks again! Keep up the great work!
Hey, thank you for watching! The water and alcohol solution softens the grain and makes it easier to pare end grain.
@@WilliamDouglasCo I figured it was something like that... but what does the alcohol do for the water when applying it? Does the water slow down the alcohol from evaporating giving you a longer time to work?
@@anthonydtobias I don’t ask those questions 😁 maybe someone els can tell us why it softens the grain.
Hahah we have made several of these and have never had one break yet. I actually want to do some testing soon.
Interesting, the joint is clearly much stronger than it looks.
“makes sense let’s try it”
I want to do some testing on it and make I video that show a pressure test with and without.
@@WilliamDouglasCo Got it. It makes sense to me as well! I love the idea
@@MaydaysCustomWoodworks thanks! Not gonna lie I’m nervous to test it JUST in case it makes me look like an idiot 😆
What happened to your Kapex? :( If I have the money, do you recommend me getting one, or my money could be better spent elsewhere? Thanks!
Amazing design, dude. Sorry about the additional move - I'm thinking all that hand work was good Zen-time in the face of that. Also, riving knife?
Thank you man, I appreciate it. The lathe work has been my zen.
I’m not a fan of riving knives because we work with a lot of hardwoods. (Unpopular vote)
🔥🔥🔥
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Oh fuuuuck. I just commented on the new shop tour video a minute ago. At least moving doesn't take a ton of time and $$$... That is rough. I do have a couple questions from the build. What is the 50/50 alcohol water mix for? Did the legs go on with glue or are they just riding on those 3 dominos?
Yeah the move almost killed us but instead it made us stronger 💪🏻
The 50/50 solution softens the grain making it easier to pare the end grain.
The joint is glued and clamped up, not just dominos
@@WilliamDouglasCo Glad y'all are handling it. Ok, I thought it must be glued, just hard to see in the shot. The bed frame looks awesome.
@@wobblytreehouse thanks man! Glad you like it!
Question - where do you get your hardwood here in Phoenix?
As always, looking good. The cinematography is killer. That first song I'm not so sure it should be in a woodworking video more of a strip club kind of song. lol. Good luck on the move.
Hahaha songs are hard! You can never please everyone and I am limited on choices because of copy rights. I always try to have an open mind with music
I'm designing a bed platform with dog cubbies and beds under it. I'm calling it the "Under-Dog-Bed".
Awe Dogs sorry for the Pause again having to move Shop again! Sucks but hey good time to purge and re-evaluate what the essentials 🤷🏽 happy trekking to the new shop Guys :)

Wow that sucks, hopefully the new shop comes with ac cause my guy was drenched in sweat and it’s not even summer yet lol
Hahaha 2 ac units G
what is the milling machine you used to make a mortise called?
Hey Sean! That is called a horizontal mortiser. This one is made by an old company called Inca. Swiss made. Really hard to find.
I was going to say that this video is porn for woodworkers but its more then that. This is actually a very beautiful & sensual piece of art. Thank you!
That really means a lot to me. Thanks so much for dropping us some love
I think landlord families lines have some kind of long-standing feud with Douglases. I only say that because I'm a Douglas, and I feel your pain.

@@WilliamDouglasCo 🙏
Did you at least receive an early cancellation fee or reimbursement for the cost you incurred to move in a setup from your landlord?
We had no lease agreement. The deal was that he would eventually need the space but had no idea when so we kept it open. We were both thinking it would’ve been a few years but it ended up being six months
That's weird I turned new yahkee workshop on and bob villa was doing all of norm's work!! If you get that you are a true wood guy. Sorry to hear about moving again! But at least your still not doing epoxy shit!!! Cheers

What happen to the festool miter saw lol
It died of old age. Out of warranty
@@WilliamDouglasCo do you think is worth it
@@carlosvalentine4939 it depends on what you are doing with it. It had a good run for us. When I bought it I didn’t have a tablesaw yet and I was using it for finish cuts. Now that I have a good tablesaw and sled I only use it for rough cuts. That being said, I could have probably went with a much cheaper miter saw and been just as happy
The music makes me feel.....a certain kind of way. 0.o
What is 6:05 about? Is that for strength or plugging a part of the original board that wasn't ideal? ua-cam.com/video/bN6GreMYNiA/v-deo.html
@@WilliamDouglasCo makes total sense! Thanks for the clear answer 🙏🏽
That is ridiculous a bout the shop. At least you got one last great project out of it.
One for the books!! Thank you for watching!
The “music” is horrible.
No...wait are you serious? They're making you move?! Is it financially feasible for you to buy a house and build a shop?
I had a shop in my backyard before this shop. Had a good thing going until an ass hole Neighbor moved in behind us and got me shut down.

Someone needs to learn some safety when using the jointer and table saw. If he is your employee he is a liability. Wow. Very sad.
What?
@@WilliamDouglasCo Not using push blocks when using the jointer and having his fingers dangerously close to the spindle..! Then to do the very same thing on the table saw! It is a matter of time till that dude sticks his finger where it shouldn’t be. Given the time you take for perfection of fit up, the cleanliness of your shop(s), I was surprised to see such careless wood shop techniques.
