Well done on the skate! As a kayak angler who has caught 7 skate off a kayak I'm delighted to read that the inflatable is going in the bin. That said, if you fall in and get water in your waders you cannot get back on the kayak, it has happened to people i know, and you also need a PFD/bouyancy aid.

I didn’t realize how endangered skate are, awesome beasts. Good luck to you in your angling adventures. 50+ years I’ve been fishing still love every minute
Two tips. When they suck onto the bottom like that, pull the line taut and then pluck it. (They have the line in their mouth, underneath the body, and it's going up to you. When you pluck that line, it flicks them around the face and upsets them, often making them move. Same trick works with rays.) The other tip is a something many fishermen are forgetting as reels get better. The name Angling comes from the angle between the water level and the line which you create using the rod. The rod is then a big, flexible shock absorber. The line is a relatively inflexible cord. The reel has a drag that lets the fish pull out more line rather than break it. The missing link is using the rod to make it harder for the fish to take line. When a big fish runs, you want to lean back and try to get the rod tip as high as you can. Then, to pull more line, the fish first has to bend the rod over so there's no more give, at which point then it can pull more line off the reel. The rod is meant to take a lot of the energy out of the run, making the fish work even harder for every inch of line, wearing it down faster until eventually you can land it. When the only drag a reel had was the fisherman's hand slowing it down, using the rod this way was a lot more important, but for big fish it's still an important principle of fishing to bring into play. What an amazing encounter with such a unique fish. Tight lines!
