For me, I didn't even consider doing audio only. I had a Canon M50 from figuring out how to remote teach when the pandemic hit and so when I decided to record my journey, I only thought of podcasts as video+audio where the audio somehow made its way out to spotify and itunes. I've learned a lot since then. I only upload my episodes to two places: UA-cam and Spotify. Through Spotify, it goes out to several other platforms. But, UA-cam is my main focus.
I started podcasting before I started UA-cam so, as I mentioned, that was a hard pivot I had to make. Most people I talk to now, when talking about podcasting are talking about video. But interestingly, a large percentage of those folks have not even considered UA-cam as a platform to post their videos.
I’m about to get started and I think I’m in the both category. It appears to me that there’s too many pros on both options to ignore and I’ve got a lot to learn. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I’m sure I’ll have a ton of questions moving forward.
There are definitely pros to doing both, especially if you are able to navigate the nuances of each. And if you can be strategic enough about it your audio only audience may come back around to watch the video to see something they only heard you talk about the first time around. What's your podcast about?
But searchability is such a huge issue Ben, doing my audio podcast for several years, and it’s very hard to advertise and market, and to be found with just an audio podcast
You are 100% correct. I would give a little more... probably much more weight to the search ability section of this video if I did it over again. In fact, at the beginning of this year, I added video to my audio podcast, Good Podcasting and had great results. :)
In fact, I just released another video a few weeks ago about why you SHOULD put your podcast on youtube. The thumbnail says "Put Your Podcast On UA-cam" if you want to check it out.
I appreciate your vulnerability in the beginning. lol! I've seen others take a really hard stance on podcasts being audio-only. I've never understood the argument. When I started, I knew UA-cam would be the focus but also wanted to provide the audio for folks on the go. I try to keep that in mind when scripting and recording. As you mentioned, I realized that there is some nuance in the CTAs and other things so I don't upload every video anymore. My plan is to add specific elements to the audio that fits that medium better.
Ha! Glad you enjoyed that. 🙂 I think my strong feelings stem from conversations I’ve had where someone would ask about my podcast and we’d be 10 minutes in before I realized they were asking about my UA-cam content which is very different.
Good video. I do both video and audio. Video seems to draw more attention when I post teasers on social media. It involves more work, but it’s worth it. My biggest challenge is developing a system that’s repeatable. I’m working on the streamlining the process.
Videos will definitely help stop the scroll on social media. Adding captions to those video teasers will help as well since so many people watch those videos with the sound off. I've been there with you in the struggle to develop a repeatable system or workflow. Keep at it though. You'll find your rhythm.
@@SummitCityStudios Thanks. I may try creating short form videos around the highlights of my episodes as a teaser to direct people to the full length podcast episodes.
I think that is becoming more and more the case, and probably wisely so. I'm curious which format you're getting the most traction with - audio or video?
What are your goals for your podcast? How will an audio or a video podcast help you reach those goals?

Your sound on this is phenomenal! Also your set!! So good. Thanks for this info.
Thanks. Hope it’s helpful. I may do a follow up soon.
I’m a huge fan of just doing both! Expand your reach and potential of monetization and discoverability.
Valid points! Which has been most beneficial for you as far as audience growth and audience engagement?

9:51: Do both audio and video podcasts, cover all video and audio platforms. Minimize your de-platforming risk.
