Perhaps my favourite song of all time. I'd gotten into the habit of going and seeing Isbell by myself every year before the pandemic stopped live music, and he finally played this one at the show I saw in Buffalo in 2018, a year and a half after I'd lost my mother to cancer. My dad died unexpectedly this week, and he's playing Western New York on August 4. You bet your ass I'll be there.
Jason Isbell writes very real songs, plus he's a fantastic performer and guitarist. Here's a list of some of my favourites: Cover Me Up - Live Nashville Strawberry Girl Super 8 If We Were Vampires Save the World Speed Trap Town Great choice by JWL!
I've heard this song a hundred times and it still makes me cry every time. Especially this live version. He sings with so much pain in his voice and it's a beautiful song.
This is one of the two songs that first caught my attention re Jason Isbell. He is a profound songwriter. Thank you, Harri, for giving him a listen. There are depths to be explored with Jason Isbell.
Dude, lost my wife to cancer. We were married 40 yrs. I cared for her while she was at home hospice. Watched her condition get worse every day. I stayed with her 24/7 til the the day she died in my arms. That was seven years ago. I still hurt. God i miss her.
When I saw what you wrote as "a Title" for this, I almost didn't listen... Yeah... I went through it with my Wife, nearly 20 years ago, already now... Thanks, Harri.
Long time fan here. My interpretation when he says “given up my place in line” is regarding saying deep prayers for her and offering to God to change places with her such as “take me instead”.
Thanks for discovering Jason Isbell, Harri. Very unknown here in the U.K.; deserves much wider recognition. Also gives me the opportunity to recommend something related, for your reaction. Think you'll love this remarkable cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' by The Highwomen. The superb singers include Jason's wife Amanda and the wonderful Brandi Carlisle. (And Jason in the band). Goosebumps! m.ua-cam.com/video/jVLNB3d-2cA/v-deo.html&pp=ygUTaGlnaHdvbWVuIHRoZSBjaGFpbg%3D%3D
Isbell, as many have said, is a great songwriter. His writes great characters (some based on real people - Decoration Day, Cast Iron Skillet) and doesn't dodge issues like race (White Man's World), school shootings (Save The World), addiction (Cover Me Up). He leaves it all out there and you gotta respect him for that. I hope his career keeps growing and expanding. I know it's a bold statement but I think his songwriting on the newest album, Weathervanes, is approaching Dylan territory.
At the outset I was afraid I'd not understand your comments due to your accent so I put on close captioning. The words when you were speaking were perfect on the written translation but Lordy, who ever did the captioning on the song lyrics really flubbed up. There were numerous errors in this heartbreaking song. I've been a fan of his for years now and the first time you hear this song if you aren't at least near tears there's a hole in your soul. Your reaction shows your sensitivity. I found your interpretations very interesting.
I should have stayed on in my school administrator job. Then my grade would have been uplifted. An E grade is considered something like a re-trial of your assessment. But as I was flipping through all the Business Administration books at that time. I wanted a taste of the private sector especially the financial sector. So.I resigned although based on my intuition the trial would have been lifted as the Principal denied giving me a letter of having integrity issues. That is why in the recommendation letter by the Ministry.of Education. they said that I resign on my own accord. That is the trouble with third party onlookers. They are not in the thick of things. The trouble with the current state of this world of social media is that a lot of gossips are getting re-hashed. Boy oh boy,
I consider Jason Isbell THE songwriter of this generation. So many exeptional songs. Jason Isbell isn't only on another level - he IS that level.
100%
A great and versatile singer songwriter.
You should do more of him. Best songwriter going!

Speed Trap Town
Great choice by JWL!
I've been a fan of Jason for almost ten years now. One of the greatest singer/songwriters ever.
I've heard this song a hundred times and it still makes me cry every time. Especially this live version. He sings with so much pain in his voice and it's a beautiful song.
He just released new music last month, it's amazing. Thank you for this reaction

One of the great new artists of this generation.

Been a fan of jason since he joined the drive by truckers 24 years ago. He's one of the best song writers and musicians of all time
Such a great song, love his singing & guitar playing
This song has been responsible for many tears from me over the past few years. It's absolutely beautiful.
Discovered Isbell just this year. I appreciate your analysis.
There isn’t a greater songwriter at work today than Jason Isbell
Two more of his to hear - "Cover Me Up" and "If We Were Vampires"
Saw him for the 5th time last night at the Greek Theatre in LA. Die hard fan. The least known best lyricist there is and a guitar beast to back it up.
It’s criminal how unknown he is. Best writer alive
Seen him 3 times - which isn't bad considered I live in Oslo, Norway... 😁
I’m jealous.
Great talent and also married to Amanda Shires, another great talent.
Love the song 🥰 Like the singer 😇🤩 Thank you Harri and the requestie

There are three elephants in the room. 1st verse - their relationship. 2nd verse - Cancer. 3rd verse - Death.
It's a reeeeeally Jason Isbell thing for them to just be friends.

O cantor ai é muito bom pra cantar e o estrumento bem executado parabéns pra todos vocês 🎸
No one dies with dignity
No one gets of this rock alive.
Hello from California. How bout some Emerson Lake and Palmer doing Romeo and Juliet (Dance of the Knights)
Let's see if you have any viewers from the 70's. The band-Automatic Man. Song - My Pearl. Interracial SF band made some eclectic music.

Listen to Yvette. It’ll both break your heart and make you want to kill the f’er.
