Show creators have stated that the similarities to Spirited Away weren't conscious/intentional but that doesn't mean they're not there! Some of the tone of the series was inspired by Hedgehog in the Fog, and the tree at 1:04 was directly referenced from the film as a little nod to it. :) And of course a lot of concept art (and thus some shots in the series) were laid out referencing Gustave Dore's art--Dore illustrated the Divine Comedy and a collection of folklore called Fontaine's Fables.
The germanic folk figure of the Erlkönig was hugely influential in the design and nature of the Beast, and the poem Die Erlkönig (the Elf King, or Arl King) later turned into one of the most artistic pieces of music period (seriously, its brilliant) was a major influence for the whole tone of the show and design of it.
The beast also gave The Girl from the other side’s beast called the teacher! It’s rarely brought up and im not sure which come first but after reading it then watching OTGW I couldn’t stop thinking about the resemblance
There are quite a few scenes taken directly from spirited away. There's a part where a frog jumps up in chihiro's face as she crosses the bridge, also in over the garden wall, and when the dog coughs up the black turtle and it scoots away, the same thing happened in spirited away when chihiro fed the dragon the medicine from the river spirit. He coughed up a little black demon think that just crawls away
definitely loved this show. I could see the Moomins, George Melies, Filmation, lil Rascals, Washington Irving, Ray Bradbury in it. Its just a masterpiece.
Babes in the Woods is also the name of an anonymously written poem about two children getting lost in the woods and dying (which is were the Disney short drew its name).
The interesting thing about Frogland is that the people who would work on that film would later work on a full-length stop motion feature called Le Roman de Renard (The Tale of the Fox), one of the earliest stop motion films and one of the earliest films that was salvaged.
I found a reffrence from the story "dante's inferno". In the story, Dante went to the 7th circle of hell where there was this forest where all the trees use to be people who had did violence to themselves, kinda like the oil trees from OTGW
The tree at 1:04 in this video is inspired by the beautifful short animation video of Yuri Norstein wich is called "hedgehog in the fog". It was made with the multiplane camera and you need to look at it ! Such an inspirational work of art wow
I came to see Johnny with short hair, but I stayed because this video was just wow! I have never seen “Over the garden wall” but this was so jammed packed with info on it, I feel like I was there when they wrote the animation.
Wow, most UA-camrs first video are usually something cringy that their younger selves would find entertaining, but this guy knew exactly what he wanted to do for his first video so props to you man!
The kind-of-angelic song that that plays in the background when they go to sleep at the beginning of Babes in the Wood reminds me of the "Sleep, Children, Sleep" sequence in The Night of the Hunter, another story about two kids stranded far from home. Also a lot of the autumn backgrounds, especially in the first two episodes, feel like they might be influenced by the Nutcracker sequence from Fantasia and the Sleepy Hollow segment in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
Interesting ^^ I never noticed any of these inspirations when I watched the show, but the animals in clothes always made me think of the Wind in the Willows. And Cloud City from Babes in the Woods reminds me of the Phantom Tollbooth, it just seems to embody the same bizarre whimsicality xD
Everyone’s talking about their favourite influences and mine is hands down the highwayman sequence. I absolutely adore Betty Boop and Cab Calloway and the first thing I saw was the infamous Koko the Clown dance number.
There are clearly inspirations drawn from Germanic folklore in the first episode. When Greg and Wirt are lost in the woods trying to get back and, Greg uses candy to pinpoint their steps. Thats similar to Hansel and Gretel. And just as they make it to the woodman's cabin and encounter a wolf is another reference to little Red Riding hood.
The going up to the clouds scene reminded me of the end of the anime movie A Dog of Flanders. But the clouds with the moon definitely have the Nemo feel! It's cool to read the comments too about what Cloud City reminded people of. Thanks for the video :)
Actual cloud city+music hahahh it's the little things. This was so interesting, thanks for sharing!! Highway man is hypnotic, I only now put the last gesture and words together.. 😅😬
Great video, I loved this series. In episode 1, when the supposed beast wolf coughs up the turtle, it reminded me of the emetic dumpling Chihiro receives from the stink spirit in Spirited Away!
I always thought cloud city referenced an old raggedy anne cartoon called "hello Mr. Sunshine" or something along those lines where she had to go meet mr.cloud to heal her sick friend
GREAT VIDEO, MANY THANKS! Your research is wonderful! No Joke, when I ever throw together a tribute DVD to the series for my friends/family, your video will be a part of it. :-^> :-}
It's hard not to cite The Adventures of Ichabod and Mister Toad as well, for general forest aesthetic and also in specific the tying of multiple sheets together to escape a window
Something I didn’t hear you mention is that babes in the woods was an old folklore children’s book about kids that got lost in the woods and died under a tree
Awesome video! Coming up on Halloween again, I think I'll have to do some sort of OTGW themed video this year on my channel! Thanks! Also, have you bought the art book? It has all these references confirmed and SO MUCH MORE, like original character designs and such.
+Katinthebox I know! I got the limited edition and I'm going to do a follow up video using what I learn in the book. I'm actually planning about 3 Over the Garden Wall videos for October ^_^ looking forward to seeing yours!
You need to watch more old cartoons. The cloud city episode is full of tropes from early cartoons from the 30's, usually involving societies of insects/toys/food that get invaded by a bad guy (like a big spider) who kidnaps a pretty girl and is thwarted by a heroic little guy.
In the comic they had this episode about the old man of the mountain that everyone's afraid of, I was so entertained to see a complete ripoff of betty boop
Its crazy how much you got right considering the art book wasnt even out at the time of this video wow
Haha it was pretty impressive right! I'm editing a follow up using a lot of the new info from the Art Book, should be out tomorrow!
Here's the follow up video!
ua-cam.com/video/MEAWV97fipk/v-deo.html
It's the wizard of oz mixed with everything great about the 13 major fables. Love it

Oh wow! Thanks for sharing, I'll be looking into that asap. I'm slowly getting enough new info for another potential video :)
Ooh, I learned Goethe's "Erlkönig" in my German class. Even translated it into Russian. Like this poem a lot.
The beast also gave The Girl from the other side’s beast called the teacher! It’s rarely brought up and im not sure which come first but after reading it then watching OTGW I couldn’t stop thinking about the resemblance
Came to the same conclusion but it's Der Erlkönig and not Die (german grammar lol)
It is always Fascinating to see that a single work of Art can be Inspired by a Thousand different things.

OH YEAH! I can't believe I didn't catch those, thanks for the comment!
Great analysis. I loved this show and I loved your editing of fast talking cut between the clips.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
definitely loved this show. I could see the Moomins, George Melies, Filmation, lil Rascals, Washington Irving, Ray Bradbury in it. Its just a masterpiece.
If you pay attention, you can even see that the ferry is labled "McLoughlin Bros."
Yeah! Pretty cool, I'm actually not sure why I didn't mention this lol

I love this piece of Trivia! Thanks for posting
You should see the film itself, it's pretty good.
Thats why I had a strong connection to this Cartoon. It's inspired by everything I grew up on. It feels like home. 🐸🐦🎃
This actually might help for me since Over The Garden Wall itself is an inspiration for my own work! Thank you so much.
One of my favorite cartoons of all time
I found a reffrence from the story "dante's inferno". In the story, Dante went to the 7th circle of hell where there was this forest where all the trees use to be people who had did violence to themselves, kinda like the oil trees from OTGW
* reference, sorry my bad

Kurmi make sure to check out my second video “The Many MORE Inspirations of Over the Garden Wall” I cover everything in the art book and more!
@@Johnny2Cellos Oops ! To be honest this video was the first I've seen from your channel, but thanks for your quick response, I will look at it :)
No worries! I love talking to other people who are passionate about this stuff, and Over the Garden Wall is my absolute favorite
I came to see Johnny with short hair, but I stayed because this video was just wow! I have never seen “Over the garden wall” but this was so jammed packed with info on it, I feel like I was there when they wrote the animation.
Definitely going to watch this now.
Woah, I don't think I've ever seen Johnny with short hair! Happy to get this in my recommended now that it's spooky season!
Stay tuned, new OTGW video this month :)
Wow, most UA-camrs first video are usually something cringy that their younger selves would find entertaining, but this guy knew exactly what he wanted to do for his first video so props to you man!
Haha I actually privated most of my oldest videos, this is one of the few early ones I could stomach 😂 but this WAS one of the first ideas I had
@@Johnny2Cellos So… what were your older vids about?
Never got that answer :/@@RobertColbert-js2st

Duuuuude. This is one of my all time favorite creations. Great video!
I mean that as in OTGW, hahaha.
Thanks dude! I'm obsessed with this show
I will sneak a shot into my next video of this siiiiick OTGW piece my gf and I got for the house. Well "met" sir.
Everyone’s talking about their favourite influences and mine is hands down the highwayman sequence. I absolutely adore Betty Boop and Cab Calloway and the first thing I saw was the infamous Koko the Clown dance number.
Thank you for finally acknowledging the obvious Star Wars joke/reference that was in that show!

Glad you liked it! I made a second video about this as well, you should check it out!
I think there are also a few explicit references to The Three Little Pigs's cartoon in the Cloud City scenes of Episode 8:)
Great research.
When the beast trying to grab the lantern with his shadow arm, I thing that scene is a reference to the Don't Starve.
This video is amazing, and so are your eyelashes ❤️😂
😂❤️😉

Something I didn’t hear you mention is that babes in the woods was an old folklore children’s book about kids that got lost in the woods and died under a tree
I actually did a sequel video to this one and mention it there!
Johnny 2 Cellos damn 3 years later and I get this but yea, the second I commented I saw the video
The show was supposed to be about Wirt & Greg accepting their death but the network thought it wasn't child-friendly
The school reminded me of old mother west wind stories, having early Americana tales and anthropomorphic animals in fancy get ups
Good to see a cartoon series created by people with an ACTUAL animation vocabulary--as well as imagination.
Great video!
3:51 R.I.P Doggo
auntie whispers reminds me of the groke from moomin
Lol, i have nothing to add to this.
cloud city reminds me of somewhere in dreamland
Highway man is the best singer of them all
No mention of Wind in the Willows?

the cloud city reception committee bore more than a passing resemblance to the campbell soup kids
whats the name of the font used for the word "inspiration" in your thumbnail?
Hey johnny why haven't you uploaded in 2 months I like your vids
Hey! Thanks for the support! I was really busy with work for a while there, but I'll be posting new videos soon!
Johnny 2 Cellos ok hope to see the new videos soon :D
yobaba and her sister are slavic folktale witchess that Miyazaki took reference from
i wonder if the autor really thought about all these references or just used them naturally and doesnt even know it is a reference...
Randome thing- Ode to a Nightingale reminds me of ogtw

Hot take: The Beast from Over the Garden Wall is inspired by Dormin from Shadow of the Colossus
In the comic they had this episode about the old man of the mountain that everyone's afraid of, I was so entertained to see a complete ripoff of betty boop
am I the only one who sees any similarity between don't starve and over the garden wall?
watched
Scary isn't a good second name for someone who makes children books and series...
no puedo con las pestañas de este pana XD ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
mis pestañas son increible
divino
I thought you said Yes papa
ctrlpaint. com?? ¿
BTW I that that AUNTIE WHISPERS looked MORE LIKE "No Face" just sayin'
Wowie
I knew the Betty boop was the girl yas
So this show is not inspired by anime like watchmojo channel believes.
Reeeee
