    Do people want more Over the Garden Wall stuff on this channel? I know asking you in a OTGW video is going to skew the data, but 2024 is the 10 year anniversary so maybe I'd dip into this one more time...?

    I’m so happy that there is still an active fandom for over the garden wall in 2024 . The first time I watched this show was only a year ago but it has become one of my favorites for sure , I love to see people talking about it like this (:

      I think it’s becoming like Nightmare Before Christmas in that it’s a highly aesthetic, seasonal story that people keep coming back to at least once a year. It’s been one of my favorites since I saw it.

    I watched a vid with over 500k views yet the analysis of that one is meh (compared to this), so unorganized and hard to follow, the creator didn't even bother matching the clips shown to what he is saying, it's just a confusing voice-over with repeated shots of the same few scenes. This deserves more recognition.

    • @Storyograph
      @Storyograph  2 місяці тому +2

      Thank you! Unfortunately the amount of effort it takes to put out good work like this doesn't translate into views as well as churning things out regularly. Whoever's 500k video you're referring to, may have started out like this and was worn down into compromise by the algorithm, or forced to cut corners by the deadline for their sponsors if they had any. After years on the platform, I'm still trying to figure out how to speed things up without losing quality.

    this was THE video i had searched for far and wide across an seemingly endless sea of youtube videos. you explained his character arc, his flaws and how he overcame them, alongside clips of the show to show it, so so well. i tend to be media illiterate in certain cases, ill admit, and thats why these videos mean so much to me. i saw myself taking a liking to wirt and relating, but i couldnt quite point down why exactly. his cynicism and quick tendency to give up and lose hope, his defensiveness in fear of getting hurt by daring to be vulnerable, believing the lie so many do that by not opening yourself up to others, you'll be protected against any type of pain. though it is that loneliness and feeling of being lost, not having anything going for you, wandering without any aim, is what brings the most painful hurt of all. a slow walk to your death, never having made a chance to the world or the persons around you, just like being a ghost. passing through life. I thank you greatly for this absolute masterpiece of a video, i also like the theory of each episode conveying a type of love. till know ive heard mostly only about the purgatory refrences from dante, which i absolutely adore, though it is nice seeing a different take on this exquisite show. alright that is a lot of text ill go watch the 11 remaining minutes now.

      Thank you! For me, I really liked "Over the Garden Wall", and I just wanted to make a video about it. Then the more I watched it and the more I wrote about it, the video almost became like a therapy session for me. I was able to kinda put Wirt's problems in context, and started to find I was giving myself advice while writing about him. I'm really glad other people are getting a lot out of this video too!

  • @UmWhoAsked
    @UmWhoAsked 9 місяців тому +13

    Thank you so much for this video. I had once watched this show but did not see the deeper parts of it or its characters and for years thought nothing of it.
    Then your video was in my recomended section and thought why not? I like when people analize shows, I like their thought process. What I want to say is that this video taught me a lot, not only about how the story was constructed or deepner nuances - but it taught me a lot about myself. When you were talking about Wirt I felt like you were talking about me. How hating myself hurt others, how my disbelief that I can be loved makes me blind to the people who try to be apart of my world. How by being in isolation I am not letting myself have the life I want to have and by trying and loving people I have nothing to lose. Good things come with risk and to take it I have to not be scared of making my choices, of taking a renponsibility of my risk which will cause its consequences. But all of this is always worthwhile, I will learn, I will grow, I will love and be loved in return.
    Thank you for making this, just wanted to let you to know how your actions have caused a positve, big change in my perspective/my life.
    Thank you again and whoever is reading this, I hope you will grow to love and to be loved as well :)
    Let's take risk and let's finally lead the life we want. I wish all of you this. ❤

    • @Storyograph
      @Storyograph  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you for sharing this! I had a similar response to this while making the video. Really spending time with Wirt for all of those hours and, in essence, giving him the advice I should be giving myself, was a transformative experience for me. Over the Garden Wall was a real positive for my mental health and I'm happy to see my video has helped others too! Strangely, well-written fiction is often more persuasive than objective facts for helping to change someone's outlook.

    • @UmWhoAsked
      @UmWhoAsked 9 місяців тому +1

      @@Storyograph Perhaps it is because we are shown a full picture of it? Of those objective facts I mean, those wise truths. A main character of the story starts flawed and unware but is confrontred with them, those flaws through time of the story.
      We are on sidelines as the reader so it is easier to see the bigger picture of where the story is going or why it is going this way. So we can analise, reflect or even see each other in that character and understand each other more.
      We experience with them but also at the same we do not.
      We are not told the wise truths, the objective facts but shown through the actions of the story. Action is after all the greatest teacher. To experience the wisdom, not to collect it and not understand it.
      Also (sorry if it sounds weird, I am taking a risk here xD!) but thank you for existing, thank you that you are so observative and reflective and also chose to share those reflections to the world.
      I am taking this path of my own, of sharing my reflections through stories and I am scared that people won't undestand them or hate me for it. Silly I know, everyone will look at them diffrently but still it something I need to overcome.
      But maybe this video is a sign that good things could come out of me also sharing myself to the world.
      Thank you again!

    first off, this video was amazing, and super fascinating, I’ve watched so many retrospectives of this show but I think this is the first time the backbone of the different types of love was applied. I adore this perspective.
    Like a lot of folks, this show has become a yearly tradition, it’s such a great comfort show for me and I love the characters and world and themes dearly, and from watching other retrospectives on it for years, it’s always fun to cross reference the points made by so many different ppl, with so many different backgrounds and views. I’m glad to say that this one will join that pantheon!
    one thing that they tend to all have in common for obvious reasons is Wirt and his characterization. Over the years and over the many other takes I’ve seen, it has always astounded me just how similar Wirt and I actually are, especially in the beginning of his arc; risk avoidant, people avoidant, self isolating, self doubting, self sabotaging, and probably a smidge of not taking responsibility for things for good measure. Throughout this video and listening to it, I had moments where I kept smiling and shaking my head in a very knowing way, like “yeaaaaaaaaaah,,,, that sounds like me” hahahaha. And while he’s not an entirely new person at the end, the fact that a change occurred at all and he gave himself a chance to be vulnerable and to truly live is very admirable. I’d like to think im a lot better than I was a couple years ago, but I have my moments often and I know for sure that I still have work to do, seeing a character so similar to myself and making the changes necessary is just super nice.
    anyways, thank you for making one of my new favorite videos ☺️

      I love seeing comments like this! When I was writing the script for this video, there were times I thought to myself "Is that really in the show, or am I just projecting?" Then I realized that if I'm feeling this, maybe other people will too. Weirdly, my life outlook has gotten a lot more positive since spending the several months making this, in a way, teaching Wirt that he's more than he thinks he is. I owe a lot to "Over the Garden Wall"

    • @eggsma
      @eggsma 7 місяців тому

      @@Storyograph hahahahaha yup that exactly how I felt ! and I feel that thats genuinely so cool when you can deeply resonate with a character or a piece of art fiction or not. And I’m so glad things have changed for the better for you! It seems like it would be such a peaceful but beneficial thing to do! Not only can you interact with something you love, but also do some internal work and come out the other side a bit better than how you came in !
      I think it’s super helpful to have that outsider view of a character or person who you share traits with, I think it helps you see how nonsensical the characters actions are (as well as your own). And while our circumstances are vastly different than Wirt’s were, we can still kinda cherry pick and apply the things that can help with our own circumstances. this show is such a gift and can mean so much to many ppl, I’m so glad I and others got to see it, and understand and appreciated it the more we grow up and see different perspectives on it as well
