GREAT video! Thanks for letting me participate in it and I hope the pointers helped! You did great and it was a lot of fun to look at what you did with the mini!
Speaking as a teacher, I really loved your feedback on Guy's model, and how it helps the rest of us become better painters. It made this great video even better!
@@MagnusMoerkoereJohannesen thanks mate, you are too kind :)
honestly I was surprised how critical u were, in a good way. A lot of times when people judge friend's stuff they tend to shy away from being too honest, but its clear u were speaking your honest opinion. Definitvley gonna check out your channel, your work on is absolutely astounding
Great feedback, Trovarion! Big fan of your channel as well.
@@serpentine8124 I apologised to Guy, because the segment is comparably long for a youtube video. BUT - I find if you give feedback and criticism you should explain WHY - everything else makes no sense. And I also think someone can only truly improve with honesty and it would be a disservice if you just told them "well done". That does not offer any opportunity for growth.
What a fun video! I love seeing how far you pushed yourself, what a great example and result!
Woh! Two of my favorite hobbie-channels gather (Drawing and Warhammer)! Lovely!

Jazza, you saucy dog! Thanks very much :) When are we going to do our "painting with Marmite/Vegemite" challenge to finally confirm which is best?
Out of everyone here I didn’t expect to see the UA-cam who started me out on drawing... commenting on a video by the person who first got me improving my painting
it's the Jazz-man!
Nice! Way to put yourself out there, try your hardest, and then volunteer to be publicly judged by a professional! Respect. :-)

Thanks matey! :)
would love to see ur take on same sort of challenge! Love ur videos btw, so fun to watch :)
lol i read this in brent's voice
I second goober doing a similar video in fact I think a collaboration between 5? Creators all being judged by the same pro would be interesting ( don’t declare a winner or give out places would just be good to see the different approaches n the way the pro breaks them down would be very interesting indeed )
Honestly, the feedback Trovarion gave you is some of the best I've ever heard. To the point, no unnecessary cruelty or sugarcoating. Picking out the things you actually CAN improve on as the next step while still giving credit to the things you already have accomplished. One could hear you felt a bit crushed at 16:52, but if you take Trovarions advice to heart - more shadows/contrast and more controll (less washes) - you can have HUGE success with your next minis if you keep giving it your best. I think your Farseer is a great piece of tabletop-art and the paintjob is very fitting for an HQ model. Be proud.
This is kind of how my lecturer would talk to our class about our designs. Anything not worth talking about was skipped, if someone had done shit, he’s tell them, but if you did well he’d praise it.
I always appreciate when someone doesn’t sugar coat things
You also have to consider he's looking at it from the perspective of competition tier. What Guy put out is a soild paintjob that most of us would be very happy with for our own armies. But he's being based against the criteria for a higher tier.
The dismissal of washes at that level was really interesting (contrast doesnt surprise me).
because christoph is a professional
Yeah not all of us are top tier lol, but that mini is very good not matter what
that critique made me happy that Gordon Ramsey is making food and not paint miniatures.
MOLD LINES, YOU DONKEY
Where's the *CONTRAST!?!*
Where's the *LIGHT SOURCE ?!*
You used WASHES? Un-FUCKING-believable. LOOK AT THOSE STAINS!
Why tf you gotta give that heart attack from laughter and panic combined
Guy: Paints a mini better than anything I could ever do
Trovarion: well your colors were nice
dead.
there's the hobby of painting for wargaming , and there's the hobby of painting for painting competitions . i know people who've won gold medals in competitions , but for games they've fully painted nothing larger than a Warcry force and have tons of partially finished larger projects . they can spend a month doing a single 54mm figure for a contest , but painting up 10 identical space marines is impossible for them . so you really can't judge one thing by the standards of the other . not trying to say that pushing yourself to paint at a higher standard is a bad thing , but it can lead to hobby frustration .
@@ernieme101 yep! you gotta find your happy place within the hoby :) thankfully it offers a lot of opportunities for all of us!
Right! Kinda hurt to watch. But having a model that passes any element of THAT guys smell test is an accomplishment unto itself
Oh yeah. I’m not throwing shade. It just struck me as a little funny. I thought the feedback was super valuable for my own painting actually!
@@ernieme101 Too right. I just got back into the hobby last year after a 5 year hiatus and I ended up watching a lot of painting videos before putting brush back in hand. I pushed myself to put more effort into painting up my first 5 man Intercessor squad than I would have put into painting a "tabletop ready" squad in the past. Consequently, as I started on the 2nd unit, I quickly realized that I didn't have the stamina to sustain that level of quality for the remaining minis. Not wanting to paint to a lower standard for the rest and leave the one squad sticking out like a sore thumb, let alone entertain ideas of repainting the finished squad to a lower standard, I shelved the project and haven't gotten back to it since. I feel I have learned my lesson and going forward will focus on doing the minimum to get to table ready with the idea that I can always go back and do more, but even if I don't, at least I have a painted army to play with.
Honestly I need the positivity of this channel these days
Enjoy it while you can before the commies invade the west and send you to the gulag.
Sorry your life sucks dude
Brave of you to do this in public. I started using a home made wet palette recently (lid of a food container, use the box as the lid etc) how about trying to mark the paper with a grid so you can place your colours in specific places. Saves me a lot on paint.

Everything IS wonderful! :D
It’s all in the mindset boys !
Hey guy!
I'm also colour blind and use a wet palette :)
A big thing that can help with a palette is to be VERY intentional with the placement of the paint on the palette itself.
I like to keep the paints I'm using in the same order of bottles, and put the paint on the palette in the same order, so that I can reference its positional relationship for the colours
I was really concerned that your "normal" and "color blind" views of the palettes look EXACTLY the same to me. Dang it.
"My anus is bleeding"
God, the nostalgia on that one
Really interesting seeing how you spend your time, on this miniature compared to your usual videos. Very impressive outcome imo, i have had issues myself because i also have colorblindness and trying to mix and match green and red (and colors that's a combination) is quite difficult.
Love the holographic nail flakes, i gotta remember to get some myself to mess around with.
I'm curios if you prefer to paint loads of models fast, but maybe not as detailed, or spend loads of time painting few models with a lot more detail.
Paint the entire titan with the holographic nail flakes ! :D
Also great feedback from Trovarion, i can even use the tips and tricks
great to hear :)
Watching Rejected again to swipe that clip felt like being 17 again.
Could you reply to me so I can put it on my CV :)
@@MidwinterMinis It truly never gets old. I bring it up every time talk gets around to the most classic videos of young UA-cam
I have the green red colour blindness also. It never effected me much in my life until a few years ago when I put on a pair of 'redish brown' trousers only to see them in bright sunlight and realise they were actually pretty much pink.
really shows just how much variety there is in miniature painting. appreciate you stepping out of your comfort zone and changing up the pace!
such a great deep dive. Enjoy seeing the difference between this and your speed paints.
Thanks Thomas! It was quite the challenge :)
@@MidwinterMinis think you will do a follow up?
"He has over a dozen golden demons under his belt". He should probably see a doctor about that. Or at least a priest. Lmao.
Man do I love this channel
I'm about to start painting minis myself and possibly start a warhammer army, so this and other channels will be big help
Been a long time subscriber, keep it up Guy!
Nice! Good luck matey :)
10:20 something about photography (both stills and motion) does that. I ALWAYS go back to my minis after I take a photo and see some stuff I want to improve, without fail. I can't think of a single time I've ever photographed a mini of mine and been satisfied even if I was in love with my work beforehand.
The shimmer on the coat is beautiful!
A warlord titan?
A WARLORD TITAN?
Can't heckin' wait :D
The dedication to pronouncing the patrons names properly is amazing XD
Great work Guy! I love that cloak texture. You are clearly more than just a speed painter!
NO ERIC STOP BEING SO NICCEEE
I very much like the bone yellow on the farseer's helmet, it's something to consider for more then just eldar models but looks especially good on their armor!
Thanks! I was quite worried it just looked like a giraffe ;)
Last time i was this early my primarch was still alive. RIP sanguinius!

Guy, i've been a sub since you first launched. It's amazing to see not only how far your channel has come, but how much you've grown not only as a YT personality, but as a painter. Keep up the great work mate!!
Thanks so much! It's been quite the journey :) All possible thanks to awesome viewers like you
Wow Guy I knew you where color blind but I never knew that it was so dramatic. Makes your work even more amazing in this guys honest opinion
Thanks Dylan! I mean, those pictures look the same to me, so I'll take you word for it! :)
I think I watched the ending of the video like twenty times comparing “guy vision”. You truly have a gift with color even if you can’t fully appreciate it. Also makes me laugh at a Battletech mini I used to have called Pinkie. It was a bright pink like 1980s bright bubble gum pink hover scout. I would get him in my enemy’s drop zone and leave him there to steal points while my mechs fought on. He was so obnoxious it was the best cammo I had especially since the rest of the unit was Ghost Bear white and ice blue
Fellow deuteronope here, and I also couldn't see any difference in the simulators.
When I've shown people simulators before, they always tell me that everything looks very dull, and food looks really unappetizing, so it's a wonder I'm so fat really. Lol.
Hey Guy! I just wanted to let you know that as much as I love Miniac as my first UA-cam paint instructor YOU are my painting inspiration for my miniature journey! Your practical and time efficient painting style jives so well with my expectations for my first armies! Thanks Guy! Keep it up!
Granted this is just me and how I do things, but I've actually found wet pallets ability to keep paints useable between sessions to be not all that useful even thought that's the feature people always try to sell them on.
The real killer feature for me is that during painting I can mix and tweak blended paint a lot longer and easier during the session. I resisted using them for a while because for the longest time, all people talked about was how you could reuse the same paint for days or something. It wasn't until Squidmar's vids on them that I learned their true purpose and have never looked back.
Yep. Exactly the same for me.
So nice to see what 'Guy's effort' looks like! So many of us go through these stages, and so many mini UA-camrs are top tier. Nice to see a human effort from Guy!
Awesome video ! I've recently started gaining interest again in painting Warhammer 40k after years and channels like yours are amazing to watch ! Can't wait to see more
The blue tack idea is amazing. I have always wondered if theres an easier way to paint models that are assembled already and get into the crevices. I love this.
19:31 ooh, very nicely done.
Bloody good job on this Guy, I've never dedicated such patience to a single piece before but with my new 3d printer and many customised models for D&D I'm feeling quite inspired to really stick my nose down and properly paint some of my stand out minis.
Thanks as always for your excellent contributions to the hobby, even a display piece like this seems so much more approachable when you break it down the way you do.
Thanks for putting your best efforts out there for critique, Guy. This really helped me learn. Respect to @Trovarion, as well. Many others in the comments have also noted that his feedback was elegantly specific and constructive. I subscribed to his channel immediately. Cheers to you both!
That was ace and very inspiring. I always feel that I cheat myself by watching your vids soon after release because then I have to wait so long until the next!
I'm also always impressed by your patreon patron pronunciation!
Thanks for making these, I find your (and Pennys) voices very calming, which helps as I sit at home enduring the ravages of Covid infection. One thing I might like to see once your current "Fight with every faction" madness is done, would be a video about conversions. It's a big part of the hobby but rarely covered.
Great job on the red spear head, really stands out against the pale blue - like Trovarian said - your colour choices are always spot on, especially considering your colourblindness this is truly impressive.
But you know what I've really come to love about your videos? Towards the end when that bassline softly starts creeping in and I'm just waiting... waiting for that break to kick in.. and when it does... BOOM! I'm immediately transported back to the 80s and I'm playing on my Commodore 64 and painting old school metal miniatures! :D
Omg, that video reference for the pin vice made my day. I had no idea anyone even remembered those productions XD
Very nice. Your videos helped me get into a fun hobby and I'm sharing it with my family!
Nice! Trovarion is one of my favourite painters/youtubers so this crossover is a dream come true!!
thanks, bud :)
Respect for offering up your work for criticism, then accepting the feedback humbly.
This guy sounds like the happiest and nicest person in the world.
I loved the video but loved even more how it's clear you went the extra mile to pronounce your patrons names correctly. It's such a minor thing but it really shows you care and I think that is awesome! Love your channel, please keep up the great work :)
Wow! No excuses. I love it. Thank you for the inspiration!!!
I am not colorblind but I am mainly a fine artist. I use a larger square wet palette and lay my colors out in the same spots every time. Reds always upper left. Blues upper right. White and yellows center. Greens bottom right. Black and brown shades bottom left. Larger wet pallet leaves lots of space between for mixing and creating gradients. I also have a standard way I lay out my round palette. When I see mini painter's palettes the color chaos freaks me out a bit. This might help you remember which colors are which. I do it to avoid muddling my colors as I work. Also, consider taking a photo of the layout and marking up the photo or printing it as a guide and marking the printout with your color names. I will often take a photo of the palette or painting and convert it to black and white to see how I'm doing with contrast. If it doesn't have good highlights and shadows in monotone, it probably doesn't in color either
This is really nice. As an Eldar player, it's a real treat to see them getting such a lovely paint job. The time and effort you put into this really shows! Can't wait for more Eldar shenanigans!
I can't imagine spending 25 hours on such a tiny model. Well done! Agree about the shadows under the robe.
Excellent video, I love how original your ideas are, and the success of your channel compared to other warhammer channels speaks for itself, you manage to mix broad appeal and technical details extremely well!
The feedback by Trovarion was really interesting, and your miniature really shows how much skill you have at painting!
I am verry bad at painting and never painted a minis. This was an awesome video, I was engaged from start to finish. It was amazing to see that mini be brought to life and hear the critic judge your mini. Get all those thing he said to heart and keep getting better even if you are an amazing mini painter witch imo you are. Awesome work.
Beautiful work! Your painting videos have seriously helped me to up my game. Thank-you for sharing videos like this. I am always greatly inspired.
Saw your post on Instagram, can't wait to see the finished result in the video !
Edit : When you showed the finished model, I audibly blew air out of my nose. Great stuff !
That was awesome and great to have a professional judge the model. Maybe in the future create one with all the feedback received. Congratulations on all the Patreon success. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
Well done guy, you did an incredible job on this mini. Looking forward to seeing you build and paint the warlord titan
Thank you @midwinter minis love your vids my favourite is your arena tournament khorne vs orks it’s the first battle report I have watched the whole thing
This is a great miniature! Pushing yourself is great, and I like your videos.
Thank you very much!
Midwinter minis videos always make my day better. Thanks for another solid video Guy!
"Accidentally brown Orcs" sounds like a great topic idea xD
Good job standing there and taking a harsh evaluation with grace. That the road to seeing your blind spots.
Your mini is sweet, I used to look at those ethereal elder robes in the 1990’s white dwarf magazines, and couldn’t imagine how people got that look.
Also, nice outro music.
I think the only painting competition I've heard of where they factor in your story behind the mini (and/or yourself) or even talk with you... Would be the one(s) that Reaper Miniatures does during ReaperCon. It isn't uncommon to get to talk with the judges either during or after, doubly so if you're wanting genuine feedback on what was liked, what could have been improved, and things like that.
Love how the mini came out, and also how genuine and helpful the opinions given on the paint job were - and how it was worded in a way to help someone work towards their goal.
I love honest feedbacks more than anything. The way you made no excuses for his critique just absolutely impresses me. An artist only improves by not being happy about the current state of his work. If you go back to this mini a few years from now you would be able to understand and appreciate the feedback a lot more. Trovarion is a monster when it comes to painting, he takes hours to paint a single Soulstone lol. He is a perfectionist.
I've been looking forward to this farseer for months :D
Fantastic video as always, I appreciate that you pushed yourself and put yourself out there to be judged in front of everyone. One of the reasons I love your content so much is your thoughtful commitment to shining a light on some parts of the hobby that others shy away from, that all hobbyists face, such as the feeling of: "well I've speedpainted them to good standard, I don't need to try my absolute best because what if that isn't good enough and I get sad" - something I often come up against. Time and time again I reach a decent standard and accept that and move on, partly due to hobby fatigue but also because I'm worried that the additional time won't actually net me much improvement. I have a great idea for a themed army which I've just bought the first models of so I'm going to try and paint this to a much higher standard than I would usually hold myself too.
I don't know if anyone's read this far but I'm a huge fan of the channel and have just decided to become a patreon as well, to show my support. Thanks Guy :)
Great and respectful feedback. You can tell he really just wants to help. Also have to remember that this is your first time really going "hard" on one mini. Still amazing work all around.
Great concept and well done for putting yourself out there. Really interesting to hear from Trovarion that competition painters generally stay away from straight washes and inks due to lack of control
As someone who's about to attempt their "best possible paint job" this really inspired me. I find your attitude towards the hobby strikes a perfect balance between wanting to get minis painted for gaming while also encouraging creativity and passion in the hobby process. Love it !
best guy to get for feedback, love both your channel and Trovs!
thanks!
I was afraid, that it will be something overly kind and forgiving feedback, but fortunately not. Very professional and honest!
feedback only makes sense that way :)
@@trovarion Yes, but in todays over-sensitive world, where everybody feel offended about anything, its not the norm anymore. Thanks again!
Love the mini and the feedback! Awesome that you put this out there!
Great job, Guy. I admire you for allowing your mini to be judged. Really enjoyed the video.
Great looking mini. Your craftworld colors are great and the farseer looks wicked good.
All of your content is original and really fun to watch. Great video on a great channel.
Great video Guy, I love your farseer. I have amassed a nice collection of old and new Eldar, they are the army I will paint to show off my skills rather than rush to finish and that model is one i've been saving for a rainy week. Now i'm very inspired, and thanks for leaving in the annihilation at the end it is very useful for those wanting to reach that standard :)
One of the other nice things is that the bright red of the gems really helps to draw your eye to those spots on the mini, giving you natural places to rest your vision as it flows across the mini rather than getting it all lost in one mono-color piece. Very well done and I can't wait to learn more from you.
I appreciate the reference to "Rejected."
Respect. I struggle between working a long time on minis and getting them just done and good as fast as possible. I try to learn from both ends. So it's always cool to see limits pushed and lessons learned.
While I'm not in a position to be #1000, I did want to say your down-to-earth style and unfussiness about "this precise color, followed by that precise color" have brought me hope and joy and inspired me to keep going in the spirit of "the best thing to use is what you have," and while I'm not colorblind I too paint out of a cheap cup palette and will never be a professional-- if it's rewarding, you're doing it right. Whatever your skill-level.
As someone with the same colorblindness, its stopped me from starting to paint minis (just cause i don't want to get them "wrong". quotes are needed there) until just recently where I've just ordered some and am getting some paint and stuff, your videos SUPER have been helping me get ready for painting for first minis!
I have never clicked so fast! Please upload more
This is great! Thanks for getting grilled for our benefit. I love how Cristoph gives you all the negetive points, and then the positive positive points.
Sometimes even when I think I've sorted out all the mould lines, I find then later...staring at me.
Very brave, and a model to be proud of even respecting Trovarion's useful and valid critique.
Eldar hold a special place in my heart, it was great to see you spend so much time on this one, it turned out great!
Loved seeing it all broken down like that, and the commentary was extremely informative
Kudos to you for reading out every single name of your patreons out perfectly well!
It looks great! You should be proud of your work. It's always hard to push your limits.
0_o a Warlord oh my sir that is a great goal. And damn that Farseer looks good. Also wow i feel seeing that reference >_>.
Trovarion is a really great painter and teacher. Also great criticism and very valuable, cause if you post your minis online, you ususally either get praise or nothing, but rarely any critique that helps you get better.
thanks mate! and yes, this is sadly true, especially on reddit and facebook groups.
@@trovarion I also want to mention how awesome I think it is that almost every content creator in the mini community is replying to comments (even on a featured video), no matter how small or big.
Having mainly used youtube for videogaming content before, you ususally only see that on some small growing channels.
Bravo for putting yourself out there and being open to feedback and criticism. Great stuff.
Love it and love that you called out Trovarion for this, seems like a super great dude and obviously an awesome content creator and mini painter! 👌👍
