Yeah I had never really thought about it this way before. But now I think about it, it was so obvious because really any part of the model is "done" when it dries

I've started doing this a lot. Now I paint a lot of my models to get them what I consider 80% done, so I can get a good looking army on the table (I HATE playing with grey unpainted minis), and then slowly go back over my army a squad at time and finish them up. Add edge highlights and some shading and more details.

Possible Hot Take: With the exception of missing a few highlights I like your original top skull better. IMHO it makes sense because it's sitting atop the exhaust system for the power armour so it wouldn't be far off for it to be very grungy and dirty. Just my personal opinion but if you're happy with the end result that's all that matters.

The painting styles popular in the Warhammer community are generally more about what 'looks cool' than what is realistic, so the more you do it the more you end up with something that looks like concept art of a comic book or a cartoon character or a CGI render, etc. Edge highlighting has been around as long as I can remember (since at least the 90s) and that's not how light works in real life, but you try telling that to the biggest company and fan base in the industry/hobby! You have to find a style that you like, and not assume that how everybody else seems to do it must be correct or that you have to fit in with them. (It helps that I paint historicals rather than sci fi and fantasy)

I think the edge detail was a bit too bright and thick. Even in drawing/digital painting, if details are too dense it can be distracting because you're eyes aren't drawn to broader shapes.
For highlight colors, you generally want more saturation and shift the hue towards red or yellow. For the metal parts of the armor, I think it would make sense to vary the density of the edge highlights, or treat certain spots (corners etc) as though paint was scraped off. That would allow you to vary how large the patches of color are, so that it doesn't feel like the same type of detail is everywhere.

If that is the brightest silver you have, you should try scale color white alchemy SC-67. It's like painting with liquid pearl, it will blow your mind pants.

I am so damn guilty of taking way too long on painting my minis. I excuse it with the fact that I only really build, paint and convert and don't actually play the game but still.
While I do enjoy taking things slowly, I also try to push myself further with each and every mini. Smoother gradients, better volumetric highlights, sharper edges etc. so I always take at least 10 hours on a model and that's just a normal Assault Intercessor.
For another example I spent about 15 hours on my Indomitus Lieutenant I painted a while ago. Problem is that they aren't really competition level or anywhere near that so it is kind of wasted time but as people say, it's not wasted time if you enjoy doing it even if my pile of shame (I started last year, like how) doesn't like it.
Also me watching UA-cam videos on the side all the time doesn't help since like that time just starts flying.

Call me weird, but I actually like the 20min animal skull job better. The 20hr version just seem too neat. Having said that, a lot of the other parts seem too neat as well, but my puny brain accepted them for the awesome paint job... But not the skull. Overall, great job.

The music at about 15 mins in reminded me of a game I used to play on the Commodore Amiga. I racked my brains and then it came to me... Walker by Physignosis. Awesome game. Thanks for that bit of nostalgia Guy 👍😀

That came out so interesting. Looks like Dana Howl illustrated a comic book or something. Lots of pale sand, which is apt. This has made me need to order more paints too. Black metal in particular. Maybe i'll burn a church.......

I can only paint well enough to look pretty good on tabletop so my line is easy to pick, main colors picked out and highlighted sparingly.
Details picked out and commonly washed. Usually be it a character or a sqaud, spread over days ill usually spend 30 minutes to an hour per session. Typically finishing a character in overall 5 or 6 total hours.
And sqauds taking longer if they have lots of details to pick out due mainly to the amount of bits that need a spot of paint on them.
So doing my current space wolves project, blackmane took about 6 hours in total. The first sqaud of grey hunters is taking longer as the models have more bits to.pick out.

great video as usual, would love to see a more comprihensive video on some of the techniques used here, edge highlighting, probably not enough to make a video on but i would love to see a midwinter tutorial dedicated to it

For 60x the time, its only maybe 2x as cool.
Striking the balance, an hour or so of brushing time on a mini will get you 95% of that extreme long hour count result. I mean, look at how you had to cheat the thumbie for the video; what's that, half the resolution on the 20 minute half compared to the other half of the pic? Dishonest as fuuk, dude.

For real, good job. though 20 hours for you would probably still be at least 50 for me to reach the same standard and awesomeness.

I don't understand what is happening. I was marveling at the paint job throughout the video, but then when the before- and after comparison starts at 20:33, my brain tells me the before version looks better, more realistic, compared to the "exaggerated cartoony" version that it has become.
I'm thinking that maybe a mini that was built to "pop" with edge-highlighting and all sorts of depth enhancements looks better when seen slightly from a distance, and as a whole. But when you zoom in to certain parts, it looks cartoonish and unrealistic compared to a more mundane paint job without the enhancements?

Am I a weirdo for thinking it looked better before? The purple is impressive but edge highlights look so unnatural to me, nothing really looks like that. I don’t know, I like subtle more grungy highlights.

What's interesting there is the process of speed painting / tabletop painting the army first so you can play with it. Then, "complete" the paint job on the main pieces when you have free time, just to relax and enjoy it. Very sound process.

I realize this seems like insanity to include in the commit section but major named characters to include in an army is a rare thing for me, I generally make generic so I can theme a better narrative and make things more custom than rely on major known, however with my new Ork army I my self plan to paint this character for about a month solid, 4 hours a day for 30 days will provide 120 hours worth of work on the model to attempt to get the best looking biggest and meanest Ork of them all.
