Grand Seiko Seasons Review | SBGH271 & SBGH273 | Rolex Datejust Killers!

- My review of the Grand Seiko Seasons Collection SBGH271 and SBGH273. Should you get these over the Rolex Datejust or Omega Constellation Globemaster? You'll have to watch to find out.
Attack on Titan Levi Art was made by the badass artist below:

A few notes and/or corrections:
5:15 The watch technically doesn't have a bezel. The box shaped crystal is about 2mm tall.
7:59 Aside from the 9SA5, the 55 hour power reserve is the longest of any 36000 hi-beat currently on the market. Faster beat rate consumes more power.
8:38 There are bevels on the outer edge of the movement. Also, while the rest of the edges are non-beveled, they are at least polished 😁

"Buy a Rolex, and impress your friends. Buy a Grand Seiko, and impress yourself." -Ancient Proverb ;-)
Wasn’t that Confucius? He was definitely rockin a GS 😅
The Rolex Master II GMT is much nicer than GS GMTs.
@@japd7897 i feel like gs cud kill w a good 40mm diver or gmt
@@dso1986 Rolex designs are so original, so pure, that ever Seiko copied the Explorer II.
P.D.: you should go to the optician 😉.
@@japd7897 you mean boring??? Yes Rolex is super boring.
Same watch different color = 10x price
What a joke
Great Job! Once you own GS youll never look back at Rolex. The finishing and quality just on another level that Rolex is far left behind. The 271 is so pretty!
Thanks! GS is next level especially at their price point. It’s not for everyone, which I get, but I still love em.
i have grand seiko and rolex but rolex still has the best bracelet and best bezel action going. the feel of rolex steel is also better.
@@mainlymusicman Agree on all the points you made. The Grand Seiko is too formal for me whereas I can where a Datejust with both formal and casual wear.
I've owned a GS, but no longer, the problem I have with grand Seiko is they seem to like that their watches wear large. I love everything they do, but just waiting for a case and dial that suits me. One will enter back in th collection at some point, but we haven't got there yet.
ive had both and i think GS is inferior in every aspect, except maybe case finishing. every other area the rolex is superior. the rolex movement as far as accuracy is FAR superior. my last rolex was 0.5 seconds per day!! . ive never seen that out of any GS with mechanical movement.
I made the mistake of going inside the Nature of Time in New York and after a while I walked out with a SBGH273 "Shubun" on my wrist 🤣
Not too bad of a mistake to make 😅
Damn good mistake bro🤣🤣🤣
Brandon has a calming voice. It’s a refreshing change from the constant yelling and screaming of Archie and Nico.
Great video. I enjoy listening to your balance of good information, seriousness, and that touch of quirky comedy.
Such an underrated watch channel. Keep up the great content my dude! Huge Grand Seiko fan myself too. Can't beat Spring Drive for the money.
Thanks dude! I still need to get a spring drive one of these days.
I can’t wait for the White Birch review
I can’t wait to bring it to you!
I'm leaning more and more towards seiko. Awesome video. As always 😁
Looking forward to watching the next one!
Finally, a watch channel that praises Grand Seiko!!!
Can’t beat GS man! Next video is alllllll GS
You're the best addition to Hodinkee in a long time. Love your videos, man.
amazing video, enjoyed every second of it and nice to see grand seiko being appreciated!
Thank you thank you! Oh man, we can’t praise them too much. I don’t want to end up on crazy waitlists. Maybe i should stop making GS videos lol
Sick and tired of Rolex games. Nice to see GS getting some love.
I'm getting my SBGH271 today, I can"t wait !
Great review as always.
I like the comparison with the Datejust. They are so different and beautiful in their own ways, but I think the SBGHxxx are way sexier.
Keep up the good work !
The finger wagging in the reflection got me laughing 😂
I really enjoyed this review, pretty neat video with plenty in-depth explanation as to why your in love with GS., own a few GS myself.
Awesome video! I really like the high-beat GSs. Everything about these watches is done beautifully!
Thanks Chris! I’m with ya. Gorgeous pieces!
Bro...love your channel. Your style is informative and chill. I appreciate the camera and video work. Keep up the great content! Big fan
Thanks dude! More on the way
So glad I found your channel. Excellent discussion and comparison among GS and Rolex, with a much appreciated shoutout for the Globemaster (I’m a fan of the Tungsten bezel 👍). I’m still a budget watch enthusiast (sub-$1000) with no plans to be otherwise, but for some reason, I still enjoy these luxury watch vids. Thanks, man!
Thanks Cecil! Nothing wrong with sub $1000 watches. So many in that price range I want to try, but they prolong my larger purchases. Lovin that tungsten bezel too. No one ever talks about that globemaster for some reason.
@@BrandonMenancio I admire your discipline of keeping your eyes on the prize. Look forward to seeing what your next “large purchase” is. Take care, man.
@8:28 you wiggling your finger in the reflection lol another great video, your camera shots, music and commentary are great
Lol saw that too 😎
Thanks Shay! The mirrored finishing made me do it.
Love these videos Brandon! Great production quality and a big fan of any retro sprinklings ;)
GS is really on a mission. Love their new 9AS5 movement, hopefully, that will usher in a line of watches that will have the more traditional wearing experience like that of a Rolex. The finishing is already out of this world.
Thanks dude! I’m excited about the 9AS5 watches too. The few they released are killer so far. Love that white birch! Also excited to see what they do with that 5 day spring drive. Can’t wait for those. They’ll all be a little pricier though. Guess I gotta keep saving.
Exceptional macro shots! Much appreciated!
Thanks man! And thanks for tuning in too 😁
Your videos are the best. I picked up the “Spring” SBGA413 last week and it’s so beautiful! It’s legit a STUNNER. The green dial one was my second choice, but I couldn’t pass up the spring.
I love these watches! My buddy got the 413 and after spending some time with it...man...might do it or the 415. Still loving the white birch, but I still don’t have a spring drive in the collection. Also lovin the lightness of titanium. Might do it 🤔
Up there with the best concerning watch Content. Love it bro
🙏🙏🙏 too kind!
Fantastic video, Brandon. I've been itching to get some hands on time with these 4 seasons pieces. Don't sell yourself so short, you did these pieces justice!
Thanks man! Probably the hardest watches to record IMO.
Just bought the blue version and it is much better value than every Rolex I own. I love my Milgauss GV but the GS rocks. Bracelet end link fitting is clearly not as good as Rolex but I can’t see it unless I use a loupe so not a deal breaker. Once the GS was fitted right , it is now a perfect fit …and for the price it is unbeatable and that blue grey dial with texture is just fabulous
Awesome video as always Brandon! Never had the chance to try a GS yet, but I am definitely considering buying one someday !
Thanks Morgan! Dooooo it! Way better in person.
Another incredible production brother 🔥 ❤️
Thanks Miguel!
Good job! Love the content. Keep on keeping on.
Thanks Dan!
Great work as always buddy
Thanks Dale! Always appreciate the support 🙏🙏🙏
Really enjoyed the video Brandon! I own both a Datejust and a GS SBGH271 and I got to say I agree. Love my GS. The only thing I think they could improve on is the clasp, I would like it to have some kind of micro adjustment.
Thanks James! It wouldn’t hurt if they added them. My dream is for something like iwc does with their gliding clasp on their metal bracelets. The little logo button on the iwc clasp looks close to the GS’s too.
As much as I knew GS was the most insane quality and horology for the money I never really liked their cases...but then I saw the 44GS case and all I could think was bye bye desire for Datejust
Props to your camera work. Those watches look great.
Great video! Couldn’t agree with you more. I don’t know of any other high quality luxury watch brands offering the level of detail and beauty that Grand Seiko does. I have the SBGM221 as well and absolutely love it. I think the dial is super unique within the GS line and still one of my favorites! So pumped GS is starting to get the love they deserve.
Thanks Nathan! Lovin my sbgm221. I recently ordered a beads of rice bracelet from grand seiko that I hope makes it even more killer looking. I don’t mind GS being under appreciated. More time for us to get them all 😁
Oh man, that bracelet might very well take it to the next level....may even be video worthy 😉. I’m wearing mine on a tan suede/nubuck strap which I think looks killer with the ivory dial.
Always look forward to your videos!
Simply put, Grand Seiko is awe-inspiring .....keep up the great work, Brandon. Hope that SLGH005 is treating you well. I'm SO jealous😉. Cheers....
The fluted dial, cyclops, case and bracelet look so 1980's. "This just isn't your grand fathers Rolex".
Grand Seiko pisses all over Rolex on so many different levels. Love your content and general mellow and cool vib.
Grand Seiko make the best watches at every price point. Great review buddy.
First! Great vid Brandon. Really digging the retro vibes in your music selection
Thanks Bob! Music is more important than the watches for me 😅
I shazamed it. Is it a remix of Under Your Spell by Desire?
Another killer video, Brandon 👍🏼🍻
Thanks Jason!
great video man, love the B-roll shots. with you on GS. I wish I had an AD locally where I live but I'm SOL there.
Thanks! That’s the sucky part. You gotta see them in person...way better than on video. Hopefully you get to check some out one of these days!🤞
@@BrandonMenancio with you on that. I’m think of making a special vaca trip when I get the funds together. Keep up the great work!
Great watches ,love the blue version. Great video too!
Thanks!
Your b-roll is brilliant!
These look so good. I visited the GS boutique here in London three weeks ago, as soon as the shops were allowed to open (because priorities). I was very impressed by sbgm221, and sbgj235. Also got to see the birch and snowflake. Not fan of titanium, so wasn't too impressed with the snowflake, even though the dial looks amazing. Birch is on another level, even though felt a bit biggish for me. That movement 👌 Either way, I left with the sbgm221, and it won't be my last GS.
Thanks dude! Congrats on the 221...it's an awesome watch that goes with a lot of straps. Titanium takes getting used to. It feels cheap at first, but oh so comfortable when you get used to it. I like it a lot now. If you're in the U.S. try the SBGA413 or SBGA415. Both titanium pieces that are great alternatives to the snowflake. That Birch though! Love it!
This video was a blast to watch! Subscribed now! (but I disagree with the Datejust needing the fluted bezel, I love my domed 36 , and just don't need to dress up for work to dazzle clients 😎🤣)
Nice video. I own the green SBGH271 and it is a beautiful watch. I also own the original Snowflake and the gorgeous SBGP015 blue dial quartz. So I understand your love of Grand Seiko.
Oh man! I’m with you! I’m leaning towards an all GS collection. I’d like to brand diversify, but it’s hard when I like their watches this much. Great collection btw!
Great seeing that the moustache is back strong :)
You know it!
i've got a date just, a speedy and a jlc sector dial and my next buy will be a GS. how can you not love the pure elegance and quality of these watches? i need a blue dial too. this is so alluring
Great watches! Yea, can’t go wrong adding a GS to the mix 👍
Not cheesy at all, farmers used to use those for planting crops back in the days. And it’s actually on the lunar calendar.
Great review Brandon. I would also say have a look at the sgbw231 - beautiful understated 37m hand wound piece with a gorgeous boxed domed crystal. As ever, need to see in person to appreciate how stunning it is. The next piece for me.
Thanks Raj! I used to really like the sbgw231 until I tried on the sbgw235. It’s the Japan only model with the blue seconds hand and beads of rice bracelet. Love it! Box domed crystal with the slightly domed dial...ahhh if I didn’t have the sbgm221 I’d get it in a heartbeat!
i know crown and caliber is owned by hodinkee now, i hope you make it in their podcast/video. I just listened to your socal watch review podcast, your view on watches is so refreshing. I think i comment that every time you drop a video. FOR REAL! I would describe your style as a modern day watchfinder with the buttery smooth macros with likeable personality. You're a person, rather than a brand. keep it up!!!!
Thanks for the kind words and tuning in! Ah, doing work with Hodinkee would be a dream! Maybe it’ll happen one day, who knows.
Yes!! This comes so well timed I’m heading down to la next month and want to stop by the GS boutique. Now I know what watches to scope out.
Oh, you’re gonna love it! Diggin the sbga415 too 👌 Tell Xavier hi for me
@@BrandonMenancio awesome! I’m looking forward to checking them out, I’ve never had the chance to go hands on with any GSs.
Cheers, great video keep it up!
Thanks Kenneth! And the FB help is much appreciated too 🙌🙌🙌
This video was great. I just picked up a “Rikka” and could not be happier. The finishing is way above anything else in my collection and I could stare at the dial for hours.
DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE IT, IT'S THE BEST YA
@@litan114 yes, bought one a month ago. Absolutely love the Rikka
Team dream shirt is v cool. Been trying to get a kit from them. Great vid! I have the winter and it’s awesome!
Thanks Zak! They're always sold out. Luckily I'm not too far from their shop so trying to get a kit when they restock.
Awesome review! I have the green dial Rikka and wear it to Popeye’s all the time...the gold indeces really pop against the golden crispy chicken background!
🤣🤣🤣 Perfect combination. Both extra CRISPY!
Nothing like a Grand seiko you have to experience them in the metal to truly get a feel for how incredibly well they are made!
I bought my first Grand Seiko Heritage Rikka Early Summer 2 years ago during my holiday in Japan. My love for Seiko started 4 years ago. I was always fascinated by Rolex, until I discovered Seiko. Since then I have several models in my collection. Seiko is more than a watch, it is 'Seikosha'.
Great content... thank you. 👍🇬🇧
I don’t own a GS yet (although it’s in my plans) but I’m guessing is just like having a seiko, once you buy one you want another and another and another and the cool think is that it has the same or even better features than well known brands at the same price range or even higher.
Great video btw.
I need the black and gold one. Damn those are beautiful. Definitely my next watch.
That's green, not black. But in different lighting the dial color changes.
Damn you, Brandon! I'm in the market for my first Grand Seiko and I'm already conflicted on which to get! This didn't help! Haha. Truly, the more I look into GS, the more and more I'm impressed by what they have. There are probably a dozen models I'm drooling after! By the way, the B-roll game continues to be ON POINT!
Thanks! It’s tough. I’m on the same boat. So many great pieces from GS not enough funding to buy them all lol. Leaning towards the white birch now, but who knows what other drool worthy piece comes along.
@@BrandonMenancio From what I can tell, that white birch looks absolutely insane! Truthfully, the SGBM221 is the current frontrunner for me (partly because of your video) followed closely by the SBGR26. I just wish I could see these in person. There's only 1 AD in my entire state from what I can tell and it's 2.5 hours away.
I love mine. The SBGR261 is nice...simple and classic. A sleeper to me is the SBGW235 (the pic in the video where I show the beads of rice bracelet). It looks way better in person and the dial is slightly domed. Love that one. Damn...hopefully you get a chance to go on a GS viewing adventure sometime soon. Let me know what you think when you see them in person :-)
@@BrandonMenancio That’s very similar to the SBGW231 that is ALSO in the running. Haha. I love the idea of it being manual wind.
The sbgw235 is a Japan only model, but somehow you can find them here 😁
Great video... I have been waiting for an everose chocolate datejust for 6 months... It may be time to move on to GS for my birthday celebration.
Much love!
Excellent video, 100% agree. I would do date just white 41 on jubilee with fluted, but that’s more than a white birch! And that blows date just outta the water. Love Rolex but I just so a SBGM221 as well and I’m addicted. Still heart that jubilee thou
This is some of the best/ the best watch videography on UA-cam
Whoa! Thanks!
A masterpiece no doubt
Your the MAN !! Great video
Thanks Brian...and Kiri! Hope Ireland is treating you guys well
Haha just noticed you fucking around in the background in the movement shots! Attention to detail indeed! Love the vids!!
I love how most of these watch videos on YT are just “[insert Rolex model here] killer”. Just shows you how prestige and in demand Rolexes are and always have been. Nothing against Seiko of course being a SARB033 owner myself.
I’d say in demand. Prestige...Definitely debatable.
That blue dial may be the one I end up picking up when we go to the boutique
Uh oh! It’s even better in person too.
Oooo Brandon posted a new video! *Adjusts to highest resolution possible on 27in iMac, grabs popcorn*...The sweep of the seconds hand is worth 20% more than Grand Seiko charges. I think green and blue dialed watches are trendy, possibly to the point that two tone was not long ago. Will they age the same way? What they really need is a white dial version. White with that texture will give it a linen-like look that would be unbelievable.
Ahh I can’t wait for a new 27 inch iMac Pro...the dream machine. Blue and green are definitely on trend atm. I wonder how they’ll age in people’s minds. You can never go wrong with the whites or blacks. Always classic. Thanks as always for tuning in!
I have a GS beads of rice bracelet on my SBGT241and its much thinner than a jubilee, but it is super comfortable. My only complaint is sizing. Regular GS bracelets I love, even without micro adjustments because I can combine the 1/2 links (more like 3/4 links) along with the hole ones to get that perfect fit. I have a 7-3/4 in wrist so for us with that in-between size, we dread sizing a bracelet. On my beads of rice though, there are no halves, so its either just a little too snug, or a little too lose. I wear just slightly on the lose side. It still fits well, and I'm happy with it but sizing might be an issue for some people.
Damn that intro is 🔥
Thanks Andrew!
Great vid Brandon! I was considering both watches but ended up going with a blue Globemaster instead. The pie pan dial, tungsten bezel, and almost completely brushed steel case and bracelet had me sold.
Thanks Mark! I Love that watch. I don’t know why it doesn’t get that much attention.
@@BrandonMenancio Agreed. The Seamasters and Speedys get all the glory. I guess because the Globemaster is technically part of the Constellation line people automatically think of it as a dress watch. That couldn't be anything further from the truth, especially on the bracelet. I find the Globemaster to be very robust and a great daily wearer. It's one of the first watches I tend to reach for out of the watchbox in the morning.
Right! I know it’s a lazy comparison, but it’s kinda like the Datejust. Can be dressed up, but sporty enough for everyday wear. Actually, a little more sporty IMO. I also like what they did with the caseback. Looks sick. I really want the two tone version at some point in my life.
Hi Mark! How do you like it now after honeymoon phase is over? I lost interest in Rolex when they discontinued 36mm blue 369 OP + 39mm white OP and Globemaster in white was really heavy contender for me. When I did my research lack of screwdown crown, quickdate set and having to rest your watch on the crown to get decent accuracy turned me off. (I got myself SBGA465 in the end)
@@simptrix007 Hi Petr, I'm still enjoying my Globemaster very much. It's my go-to daily along with my Explorer 124270. Since it's almost completely brushed it definitely has more of tool watch feel but throwing it on a nice strap would be best for the dressier occasions. I actually prefer having the jumping hour hand over the quickset date, I guess it would only really be an issue if the watch isn't worn very often. No problems here as far as accuracy is concerned, it is METAS certified after all. IMHO I think the pie pan dial looks better in blue, I originally was leaning towards the white opaline also but I'm glad that I decided otherwise.
Love your video(s)! 🥰
Thank you!
Not a huge fan of these "the something something killer"-titles, but huge fan of your channel and videos... Liked before watching
Lol Thanks! I know...I was hesitant about using it too. My wife has a Datejust so it was an easy comparison.
My favorite watch videos!!
Thanks!
love this vid
Thanks Jay!
The Intro 👌
Again, the biggest problem with these Grand Seikos is the complete lack of micro adjustments in their clasps. Over and over again I’ve seen numerous people complaining of this, and yet Grand Seiko doesn’t seem willing to do anything about. The clasps on my Rolexs all have micro adjustments which makes the bracelets on Rolexs more comfortable and far superior to the ones on the Grand Seikos. If only Grand Seiko would stop ignoring their customers and actually address this problem, serious collectors like myself would actually purchase their watches. Years later I’m tired of waiting - Grand Seiko get your act together!
I don't see the same level of nit picking with Royal Oak and Nautilus bracelets.
Amazing video bro, great minds think alike!😊🍻 I agree GS is definitely slept on.
Thanks dude! Must be a SoCal thang.
@@BrandonMenancio 😂😂
Great video, would love to see a GS heritage in 36mm or 34mm diameter
Team dream team t-shirt is simply gorgeous 👍🏼😄
I haven't even watched the video yet, but I already hit Like. I may be biased for this video in particular, but I got my reasons :D!
Well, the art in it is incredible! 😎
How about that ALS Ultra thin you demo'd? That dial is insane in real life... literally perfect. These GS look crisp on camera though - would love to hear your comparison
The green one is very stunning
I know! It’s even better in person. Thanks for tuning in.
Отличный обзор, спасибо! Очень нравятся́ Grand Seiko.
Good work Brandon....and what beautifully considered Photography. I was able to watch it in 4K (to my surprise) - stunning work.
I have a two tone Explorer on the oyster bracelet and I have to be honest I find the bracelet it's weakest point . It's a little sharp here and there and the clasp is somewhat ugly imo. It has an additional security flap which snaps over but I don't really get the point of it at this price point. It's one of the less popular Rolex models and I waited about 4 months and paid RRP from a local AD. I am, nevertheless, very, very pleased with the presence of the black dial, the Gold numerals and the 72 hour power reserve .
I have also have a Grand Seiko SBGX261G. It's a no nonsense quartz. It cost one fifth of the price of the Rolex. I love the polishing and the black dial.....but best of all the fit on me is great. The bracelet which does differ to yours is very silky and slightly bevelled . The clasp is also neat and effortless. The lug points on my GS extend very slightly beyond the back of the case.....this gives rise to both a wonderful and a snug fit.
I will not be waving goodbye to either of these watches....the Rolex is classy...and the Grand Seiko is always ready to go.
I will keep my eye on the GS catalogue - for me, the Grand Seiko Spring drive and the resulting smooth sweep of the seconds hand is an electro/ mechanical breakthrough and a thing of wonder.
Just bought my 2nd one...well, 3rd but gave one away to an awesome business partner. Rikka and the Snowflake. Love them.
Yes! First. Can’t wait to Watch this Brandon.
Haha Thanks Jeff! Hopefully you like 😁
I had 4 Rolex in my live. Only a whitegold Day Date survived. But now I preferred my new Skyflake.
Both brand's are excellent. I like both but for me the Rolex datejust just looks amazing. As far as movement goes it's preference. These Grand Seiko reminds me more or the Omega Aqua terra
GS needs to start releasing these in a 36mm variant. It would be a full on Datejust killer.
That green dial with the gold hands is insane. Love the vid man. I love these watches - and love Gs. I agree they are dollar for dollar better value than Rolex - but what do you think about Rolex price retention vs gs? Does that matter to you at all?
Thanks dude! Value retention is only part of the equation for me, but far from everything. If it was the only factor then it’d be Rolex all day. I’m not a “watches are investments” kinda guy. Nothing wrong with that mindset though. As long as i don’t lose crazy dough when flipping a piece than I’m fine. Oh, and with certain Rolexes how are you gonna flip what you can’t even get in the first place 🤦♂️ (at retail price that is)
May I ask what mic do you use to record? The audio is so crisp and clear
Thanks! I’m not the greatest at audio, but I’m sort of getting what I think sounds good recently. It’s the deity v-mic d3 pro.
Truly great and fun video. Is there anything within say 5k either side which is better? I understand that rolex comparisons get good ratings. It's also free advertising for the big R.
Thanks for tuning in! And not being turned off by me trying to get more views lol. Hmm a lot of the GS models with their regular automatic movements are under 5k. My sbgm221 retails for 4600 I think.
Good video!!! 👍 I will own a GS one day!!! I own a dayjust and Omega globemaster AC and Aqua Terra....I prefer Omega for value and better customer service...grt movements for less!
I agree GS is better for less
Do you have any experience with the GS service? I heard the watches need to be serviced in Japan..I live in the EU and am very curious to know before I pull the trigger on the 271 which is mesmerizing..
Man, what would I give for a 36mm Grand Seiko with Spring Drive. I'd buy that watch in an instant!
Grand Seiko is the anti-thesis of Rolex. You don't need Lolex if you buy GS. Pure and simple.
Good stuff B, so tempting! I think I'm gonna try and grab one of those new explorers. Let's go Lakers!
Thanks J! Uh oh, the two tone. I’m not gonna lie, I’m feelin that one now.
“Hard to find a dial double or triple the price”
...triple the price puts you in Lange territory and Lange definitely have dials worthy of praise
So true! I’m trying to get one in to do a comparison. Lange movements are also finished beautifully 🤤
