It's great to hear your thoughts on this piece AB and I concur with your comments. The act of manually winding the watch each day certainly adds to the connection with the watch. Without the automatic winding rotor also as you show gives us a view of the movement and power reserve indicator without obstruction. Personally I'd like to see a snowflake titanium version of this watch, manual wind with power reserve indicator on the back. I also really appreciate the symmetry of the dial without the date complication. The great macro shots also greatly appreciated showing the texture of the dial.

If Rolex wasn't able to coast on their legacy and prestige, Grand Seiko would be decimating them in the luxury watch market. Grand Seiko's finishing and overall design is, in my humble opinion, leagues above much of Rolex's product line.

@@alphacause We'll agree to disagree. I own models from what most people would class as tier 1 maisons. My favourite watch to wear remains my date just 36. Movement. Design. Finishing. There is no area in which it isn't exceptional.

It conveys the sense of wabi sabi by introducing: "imperfection" onto the dial, it gives Grand Seiko another opportunity to display its artistic micro scale wizardry by how it is designed, and frankly it was a bit of overt branding for the spring drive to distinguish it from its other movements. And while WCS may say the 007 is the better watch to me in comparison to Skyflake it feels a bit boring.
19mm lug width is almost forgivable because the diameter, thinnest, and lug to lug are finally a great size for a dress watch! Yay, Seiko! Great review : )

Man, Grand Seiko is the best entry level luxury maker, the Snow Flake, the White Birch and now this. Plus that SpringDrive at the heart of it, the quality is insane. Truly a watch for watch enthusiasts not for clout chasers.
GS does it again with another great watch release. In additon, they show that they are listening to their fan base by making a significantly slimmer profile while keeping the dial clean; focusing on the symmetry. Unfortunately, there still seems to be no winning over of many who still focuses on the smallest of flaws that would be overlooked if GS were another watch brand. Either way GS has another hit on their hands!
Big improvement over the SBGA407 since it's significantly slimmer and has the power reserve on the back, but it felt a bit small on my 7.5" wrist. I'd probably go for a 40 or 41mm version with 20mm lugs.
I used to feel the same. I felt that the watch would wear small, definitely, on my 8 inch wrist. But my tastes have evolved and I find this just perfect!
Good review and a solid watch, I would love to add this to my SLGH003 and SHGA007 coming Dec. my only gripe is the small text would be better at the very bottom of the dial and not above minute markers.

The effort in grand Seiko’s design is matched by the amount of work you put in for the rest of us to enjoy it from a distance. Is grand Seiko trying to own the 19mm market?

It's a beauty no doubt and has a similar look to a Jaeger Le Coultre Master Control I've owned for a number of years. Have to say that I wouldn't mind doing a swap! ;)
This is beautiful, in almost every way. I just couldn't imagine it on my wrist. My hope is that they release another version with a darker dial, and slightly different pattern. Lava rock inspired dial with gold hands, or a red leaf inspired dial with white (gold?) hands.

The SLGA008 would be more of the style I'm looking for, even though I could do without the 18k case and the price tag. SLGH007 I find too boring with its black dial and steel details. Owning a "The Citizen" I'm quite satisfied at the moment. If GS comes along with something up my ally that I can see in the store I might buy it. GS making most watches I'm interested in Limited Edition, makes it so I cannot even see one in person (in store) before they're sold out.
Love it but it’s pricey for what you get. But if you like it just buy it. You’ll look back in like 3 years and with the way all RRP prices are going, you’ll realise it was a bargain.
I really want to offer one piece of production feedback. It would be helpful to have the levels normalized between the theme and the actual narration in the video. I adjusted my volume to make the theme pleasant to listen to, and the narration that came up after sounded like a whisper by comparison. Thanks!
I remember the story of frozen lake suwa from the famous 49 episode taiga drama *Fuurin Kazan* , where Yamamoto Kanusuke and Takeda Shingen force the Damiyo of Suwa into seppuko, by promising the Suwa daimiyo's son to become again the lord of Suwa after coming of age. The promise was broken and he was forced into a monastry instead. His aunt, the young Princess Yu became the concubine of Takeda Shingen. When she got pregnant due to tensions with Lady Nene, Yu-hime was allowed back to Suwa, where she settled in a mansion near lake suwa. In one episode the frozen lake is shown, and the wavy pattern. And princess Yu accompanying Shinto priests onto the lake for rituals. Yamamoto Kanusuke was secretly in Love with the princess.....it's one of the very best historical doramas.
Is there a Spring Drive with the day of the week ? After 15 months in lockdown, the day of the week has become more important than the date ! A seconds/minutes/hours/day of week watch would not need adjusting at the end of each month.
Beautiful watch, love what GS are doing. Now, just MY opinion here... but shouldn't the power reserve indicator be on the front for a manually wound movement? I understand putting it on the back for an automatic (both aesthetically and functionally), but I would much prefer (from a functional standpoint) to have it on the front when I have to know when to wind the watch. Anyone else think that makes sense?

Beautiful watch and while moving power reserve indicator provides for a cleaner and more refined dial - I just don’t get the display case back! There is little to see or enjoy. I’d rather have a solid case back similar to those they produced back in the 60’s/70’s. Or perhaps a half and half - solid case back and window for power reserve. A brand did this recently - can’t recall who...but genius.

The SGBY013 does come with the bracelet and white dial. Otherwise you buy the bracelet only and replace the leather straps

The movement decoration looks like an engineer designed it without consulting anyone, and the designers were left to fix the mess.
It's almost perfect, I'm missing the 100mtr water resistant and steel bracelet. Then it would be perfect and instant number 1 on my wanted list 😜🥰
