  • This video is a review of the 7artisans VND. A 1.5 - 8 stop variable ND filter. You can check out the filter with the link below.

    If you want to know the result without watching the video. I think this is a good VND at a reasonable price but unfortunately it doesn't work when used with a speedbooster on the BMPCC 4K. For me that's a big problem, it's not the filters fault and in many ways I like it.

    Found the same problem with my Tokina 11-20mm on either the Metabones and the Viltrox speed boosters when using an 82mm filter. Basically at the widest end, the camera is able to catch the edges of the metal frame on the filter. But if you take the filter off, you get a perfectly non-vignetted and refreshingly overexposed image. May have to use a one-step step-up ring to a 92mm to avoid that.

    Great video!
    By the way, which speed booster do you use? I'm just about to buy a Pocket 4K with a Metabones booster myself, and I know they have a 0.71x magnification version and a 0.64x one, so maybe the stronger booster trades a higher magnification ratio for this weird vignetting issue?

      I use the Ultra 0.71x because I had a lot of apsc glass. You could be on to something with your theory.

    The color cast is because of the bmd's cameras weak IR CUT abilities. When I use NDs with their cameras I always also use an IR CUT. Regarding variable NDs, the solution is to have two filter sets: 1-5 stops, and 6-10 stops (Peter McKinnon's ND filters are like that). And if they could add the IR CUT ability too, all in one, even better (there are only two brands that do that I think, but they're full NDs rather that splitting in two ranges). The right variable ND set doesn't exist in the market yet, while it can be done. Also, to avoid vignetting, always buy your filters at 82mm, and then use step up rings. You never know what kind of lenses you might have in the future.

      Well, 7artisans said the x will show up on the last two stops when using a wide angle lens. I’d say it starts to appear at about 6.5 stops.

    Width of lens/ field of view or focal length numbers are irrelevant, what you are experiencing is differing image circle sizes for different lenses. Those lenses are made for a 1.5x crop and with a speed booster your crop is less than that, thus you see the edge of the image circle for some APSC lenses.

    • @ChristopherMichaelLaw
      @ChristopherMichaelLaw  Рік тому

      What you're saying may be true but I don't get any vignette or see the image circle when the VND is not attached. This only happens when adding a filter to the end of the lens.

    • @GabrielFFontes
      @GabrielFFontes Рік тому

      @@ChristopherMichaelLaw That is happening because you're looking at a part of the image that you're not supposed to be seeing on an APS-C sensor, so the filter creeps into the image circle with the speedbooster.

    IT's the sensor size and the APS-C lens you guys are using. The bmpcc 6k is a 35mm sensor (bigger) AND the tamron and tokina are NOT full frame lenses. slap a full frame lens on your 4k with the speedbooster and you'll see no vignetting
