XXXTENTACION started off with different genres, it worked for him because his personality was bigger than his music. People were fans of who he was more than the music. So I feel like if you’re an artist that changes genres. You need to put yourself out there more and make the fans fall in love with your values, who you are & your brand. They’ll love the music and any kind of genre you put out BECAUSE they love who you are and your branding.

YES! In 2023 brand >>>> music. An artist can create whatever genre they like, as long as their brand is strong enough.

Exactly, and the examples of artists who "disappoint," their fans with new sounds is because that entire sound was all there was to them and their brand. With artists like X, it is far more than Music

From a marketing point of view, you are 100% right.
BUT: "Don’t throw any of yourself away. Don’t worry about a grand scheme or unified vision for your work. Don’t worry about unity-what unifies your work is the fact that you made it." -Austin Kleon

Release whatever the F you want as long as you don’t try to please anyone but do it for yourself.

The artists that are versatile stay in The game forever. If you look at every top artist, they’ve made songs outside of their typical genres and built bigger fan bases that way

Burstimo advice is spot on, as always. Here's some "old guy" thoughts for writers... take or leave...
Still write everything you need to write, because that's how you grow as an artist. Just don't release all of it!
You don't want to be an "emerging artist" who isn't actually an artist.
If you're having trouble committing to a sound or genre, you might have the cart before the horse.
You might consider... finishing 10 good songs before you define what your sound is.
This will help you develop some originality and some integrity.
When you have 10-15 really good songs that have that sound, *your sound* then you start to release stuff.
This will help your songs sound like they belong together, and help you appear to stand for something.
You're not releasing the good songs and shelving the bad ones, you're releasing the songs that tell a story (even in time released singles).
It's almost like making an "album," but without actually doing that.
I salute any young person who wants to be an artist because they have something to say. You can still do that.

It’s crucial to have a consistent sound. Changing genres a bit too often will confuse listeners. Loyal fans will soon detract from the artist when the genre/ music direction takes a different turn.

I make metal, EDM, and chill out stuff. It's annoying that I have to have two separate artist accounts. Trying to keep up with social media for ONE band is hard enough, but doing it for three seems impossible to actually get any progress on either of them.
I listen to loads of different styles of music... And I want to target fans like me, so surely have varied music is the better option there?

Lenny Kravitz came on the scene with a big rock song and then he switched over to R&B. R Kelly came on the scene with New Jack Swing and he switched to R&B. Pink came on the scene with pop rock and she switched to R&B. These are just a few examples and there’s many more not to mention the diversity of the Beatles!

I don’t know what genre I fit into but I try to be consistent with my music. At the end of the day, I think all my stuff sounds very similar but different. If I make something that sounds different, I just roll with it. Sadly, my decisions are swayed more by my thoughts and feelings at the time I’m creating something rather than the marketing. It’s hard enough to create something people may actually want to listen to without worrying about what the marketing experts think 😂

I feel this has been my problem .. I switch genres like rap, reggaeton , or reggae and can’t never make a sustaining fan base

  • @asole100

Yea I find my self not listening to an artist anymore because they switch, and I don't want to waste time listening to songs I didn't like because of the genre. Like that's not why I followed them for, and most the time I forget the artist even exists which is another main reason.

If you're bored with one genre you're making and want to explore other styles you should do it. Becoming a 'fans slave' isn't the way to do it I think, and it would most certainly affect the quality of the music you're making.
Even if you mastered the art of making a rock song or record, what's the point of doing another one if you don't want to really ? Staying in comfort and getting redundant isn't the point of making music for me, to hell with the fans if they don't like it, new ones will come. If no one comes that's fine too !

What about collabs? If you make instrumental electronic music and you produce a song for another artist (pop singer) and the style is not that far from each other except your music is instrumental and this is a pop song.
Isn't it wise to have 10% of your releases being collabs like that so you have some intermix of audiences?

do you recommend starting over if i have only 50-100ish actual followers on Spotify but with 150k+ streams on a few tracks?
I am also changing genre from lofi chill instrumental hip hop to House and Techno. the algo will be way diff and fans too i assume.
Part of me wants to start fresh with this new Tech/House sound and new name - another part of me thinks i shouldnt let all that work to get me 500k+ streams in total on 'blankey' go to waste... thoughts?

Look atDavid Guetta catalogue, a mess up from Any kind of genre. 90% made by others, 50 % remixes of others hits. His name put on a song sell it like fire. The Brand is bigger than rules, fans desires, etc... He is a selling machine.
