This is the most inefficient splash I have ever done. since we had to redo Sivir maybe 3 times. It was very fun sketching her though. I wish I could have shown the other thumbs which I actually liked more. :P
Things I learned:
-Torso twist is great for dynamic poses but avoid having the torso face the camera too frontal. It removes the dynamic feel
-Anatomy can be even more slender than what I imagined.
-Circular weapons are super hard to do so I recommend learning 3D
Thanks to Mingchen, Alex Flores, and the other great artists at Riot for the paint overs!

𝗦𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗛 𝗙𝗔𝗤
► A splash takes 4-5 weeks. 1st week for multiple sketches. 2nd week to figure out the colors. 3rd to 5th week to render and polish.
► I paint with the canvas size 8,000 x 4,500 px but it is shrunk down to 7,000 x 3938 for final. Final file is around 800mb.
► This video is 40x speed up. Do the math based on this video's time. Usually, the real time is around 40-80+ hours. (if the other thumbnails were added in). Actual work hours are more than 100+ hrs when you factor in the other thumbnails, research, and contemplating time.
► The toolbar at the left side is called Lazy Nezumi. It helps me get smoother lines and have perspective guides.
► To quickly color a grayscale, I use two methods.
GRAYSCALE COLORING 1ST METHOD:
• Layer on top: The grayscale set to multiply. Brighten it up and colorize depending on the mood you want. This Acts as an AO pass.
• Layer below: Use a solid brush to paint in the flat local colors.
GRAYSCALE COLORING 2ND METHOD: (Messier)
• Layer on top: Set this layer to softlight and add in your colors. This makes it a bit look dull on the highlights so you need to manually fix the highlight colors.
• Layer below: Grayscale here.
► Tip for revisions. You can use liquify on multiple layers. Right after you do it on one layer. You can press Alt+Ctrl+F to apply it again to a different layer. Make sure not to deselect your selection if you are doing this.
► I use color dodge and sometimes linear dodge blending mode to add in lighting layers.
► I group layers using this logic:
1. Post processing
2. VFX, magic
3. Character
4. Some fog
5. Background people, elements, etc
6. Sky and far background
► Here are my tools:
2008-2020:
• Wacom Intuos 3 6″x8″
• Samsung T190
• Intel Core i7 3.50GHz, 16GB RAM, Windows 7
• Photoshop CS6, DAZ 3D, Alchemy
2021:
• XP Pen Artist 24 PRO
• Dell UltraSharp
• AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core, 32 GB RAM, Windows 10
• Force Series Gen.4 PCIe MP600 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (this is important for faster everything)
• Photoshop CC, Daz 3D, Zbrush, Maya
► To open a second window of your artwork in Photoshop it is located in Window - Arrange - New Window.
► To temporarily convert your artwork into grayscale. Go to View - Proof Setup - Custom - Select Dot Gain 20%. Then Press Ctrl + Y to toggle this view.
► I am not going to upload longer or shorter versions of this because that takes too much of my personal time. I'm already giving this away for FREE.
Sorry for the long absence! Had to priority other stuff to secure my future! :)
Absolutely no need to be sorry. We are grateful and lucky to see your process! Hope all is well.
What sets people like you apart from other artists is your ability to utilise these 'effects' (for lack of a better term) - the way you can make a simple sketch look like a cinematic action scene by building all these effects around it is what makes these splash arts so magical and come to life
Thanks! Yeah, I'm combining all different techniques I've learned throughout my career to do these. It's a lot of work but worth it in the end :)
You are literally a blessing to the art community.Thank you !
Man, thank you so much for giving it for free, your videos help me to learn a lot with your process, again, thank you, you are a legend
Glad it helped you learn stuff! :)
I'm sivir main, in my opinion this is the best splash art for Sivir and one of the best in League of Legends. You doing really great job! 😀
Thanks a lot!
@@deivcalviz 🥰
Fantastic work. Every time I think you're done you somehow add more details. Beautiful!
HE ALIVE!!!
I bought his tutorials on artstation and have been watching it. It’s honestly amazing to see how he applies his rendering skills that he can produce extremely high quality end result despite a weak foundation in penmanship.
This makes me think that learning to render is more important than learning to draw, because he can use liquify and 3D and many tools to complete his work.
It’s amazing to see someone who has a deep understanding of the tools and use it well. I don’t even know how to begin learning the tools like he does.
"learning to render is more important than learning to draw"
How wrong you could be. Basic drawing is the most important. He mastered composition, gesture, lighting, and color.
The rest is just a cerry on top.
"weak foundation in penmanship" 😂🤣🤣
Finally, after 8 long months of waiting. Watched this with LoL songs on another tab makes it even better. I like your version of the face more but I understand the adjustment. Base on my observation, I squint my eyes a little when driving on motorbike too fast, and in this case, she's moving at high speed so the Sclera below the iris not being visible makes sense. This is my favorite timelapse so far and can't wait to see more of your work. 💯💯💯
Thanks a lot! Yeah, I think it makes sense what they adjusted. Honestly, the face changed too many times from feedback from diff people and I kinda lost a bit what I truly wanted but in the end it is just a job and the end result still looked pretty. :)
@@deivcalviz the end result is pretty amazing. Also thanks for adding the 'Things You Learned' in the description. Can't imagine how much patience this one take 34:00
This is so incredible. Your splasharts are such a big part of the game. Love them
THE KING RETURNS!!
Absolutely brilliant. Currently building a career as an illustrator/splash artist in the game industry and I can tell how much work and effort are needed to get to this result. Thank you for sharing!
Glad it helped give you an idea! Its tough work especially doing revisions every week. Be prepared to repaint stuff!
That's great, Deiv! Waited so long to see this and it was definitely worth it!
its crazy how in every stage of the image he's willing to change the shape pose and detail until he's satisfied. such an insane amount of dedication to the craft.
Awesome process as always!
Amazing work, I'm speechless. I have some questions if I may ask!
1. I noticed that quality of your works (on this channel) had a huge leap with your first work for League of Legends. Is this because Riot has some standards that you have to keep or they somehow guide you?
2. Regarding 3D model for Sivir's body, was it used for proportions and realistic lightning/shadows or was there more reasons?
3. Are in-game models based on splash arts or the other way around?
Thank you!
1. The quality of my work improved naturally since I have been doing this many years already. Riot is also improving with their feedback and guidance.
2. The 3D was only used to know how the perspective works and to understand the basic light direction. Usually I also just do selfies which are more natural.
3. Ideally, the splash art should be last. It's like doing a movie poster and I need to know how the actors look like. Same logic. Although there are times where the 3D is not yet done so we base it on the concept instead. However, this sometimes results in more revisions since the 3D can also change in the final and we should match it eventually.
Also, thanks a lot!
Thanks for letting us see these for free, and the lessons you learned in the video description are far more valuable than many art classes.
Yeeey a new video! 😇🌌
I am glad you came back 🤩
Always love seeing your posts!
the goat is back
One of my favourite skins and splashes . Good job!❤
Hah I was wondering when you would upload again just earlier today. Love to see it!
Is great to see you around here again Deiv!. I hope everything is going super well for you, take care man! ☺
this channel is insane, better than art school
Thanks for posting this!
You're back. I am very happy😢
Can I ask? U draw some poses in the beginning, only to pick one, the most stunning/ fit to the painting?
My friend recommends ur channel, and I start loving it. Fabulous 🔥
Yes, it is important to experiment first on many ideas then pick the best ones. I send the client around 6 final sketches and they choose what they like.
@@deivcalviz ah I see. u drew them so damn well. if I were ur client, certainly can't pick one of them; 'D. thankyousm
Thanks for sharing. Wish you the best
OML incredible as always! Your really amazing and hardworking ◇
your art is really a great inspiration for me, thank you very much.
You're awesome!!
I love how you always come up with so many cool thumbnails, do you use references for the poses or just your imagination and what do you recommend to practice to be able to do such thumbnails?
Its both but 80% of the time i use refs. Some ideas come from ingame animation and some from google or pinterest.
Great process & jammy tracks!!
Hope your future is alright :)
I missed your videos ❤ thanks for uploading more content, it's always inspiring 🥰
man, you’r legend.
There are always so many ideas sketched at early video. Always wonder that the final is chosen by your client, or it was just you want to do 🤔
Wish I could show the other thumbnails though. I actually refine many of those but I'm not allowed to share them. The final is usually chosen by multiple people at Riot. They decide based on many factors like champion readability, cropped version in-game look, overall appeal, story, etc.
omg... so good o.O
Amazing work! I just don't understand why at the end splash art is changed so drastically? And why does it look worse? I mean... I love what You do, Your arts are amazing and this video is yet another proof You're a genius, but I don't really like the in-game splash art. Why has it been changed?
Many people decide to change things in Riot.. maybe some people want more variety in faces, some parts doesnt read well, etc.. This splash changed a lot indeed.. I feel it lost my style
This is such a phenomenal youtube. I youtube your style and hope you youtube too
Hello, I love your work! but i have a question, since you work in riot games.
Can you work online or is work strictly face-to-face in all cases?
Hello deiv, are your free brushes can be used for commercial use?
Yup!
@@deivcalviz thank you, I've been waiting for this moment. Thank you, you are truly an amazing artist.
Hello! Thank you very much for your creativity - it really inspires me to improve my skills. Your videos are very helpful and glorious, always looking forward to new video coming out
Reminds me of when Riot would show them doing the splashart for champs like Kha'Zix back in the day.
i have a question: How do u flip your entire artboard? I've looking it up forever.
Thanks. Love your works.
If I may ask for the characters/movement in the background the (blur effect) is that achieved through gaussian blur or something else?
Does anyone happen to know the program they use to get those 3d characters into direct poses they want? Would be a BLESSING to have
I use Maya but Blender is also good. I got the models from Daz3D.. i also recommend downloading pose apps on your phone. Those are free and super useful. Also buy naked posable 1/6 toys and use a lamp lol.
May I ask how do you change color of paper in photoshop? Darker colored paper is easier on the eyes for me. Can't seem to find tutorial anywhere online.
Redhead Leona
But I love it as always :D
I mean... isn't Leona a redhead as is? 😅
@@RichelieuOnTheShore good point xD
Do you paint the background right on top of the color rough that you chose to fit the mood? I'm trying to figure out the best way for me to go from rough colors to the greenlight stage.
Yeah, usually the bg process is much messier. I merge stuff together and straight up paint them.
i watch all of your video now, and im such a big fan of your work :DDD. I have a question tho, i noticed that you usually trace the drawing in the middle of painting step. and then you edit the drawing to fit the lineart. May i know the reason of doing it? Thankyou somuch Deiv!
Sometimes I trace it to improve shapes. Sometimes I trace it to follow revisions by the art directors. Redrawing it usually helps me understand things more.
e x c e l e n t
what is that additional bar with a power button in the bottom left ?
Lazy Nezumi plugin
Do you have a tutorial for doing backgrounds.
Not yet!
@@deivcalviz I really love your art process, and would like to become a student of yours sir
If I may ask how long does a art like this take you to complete?🥺
Check out the description. More info is down there at the FAQ
Any bee skin line for Lee sin coming? (Bee sin)
lol no idea.
how?
Do you not sell psd files?
Not Riot stuff but I have old tutorials available with PSD files as well.
how much does Riot pay for illustrations like this?
Just to be clear, I do not work for RIot. I work for West Studio. And unfortunately, information like those are under NDA. I would like to recommend researching Karla Ortiz's article about art rates instead.
@@deivcalviz ok, thanks!
