When I first started this splash, I honestly had doubts how I could make it look cool because of the neon pinks and neon greens and some chunky shapes but it ended up as one of the coolest splashes I've done. I'm also super proud of the thumbnails I ended up doing for this since I learned a lot on how to draw dynamic humans.
Mid, production, we changed colors. I believe the Chroma was switched into the main version.
Some tips while I painted this:
-Not using 3D honestly both more fun but also frustrating. At least his weapons were not that complex to do since it has lots of straight lines.
- Even if this was an open scene. It is still important to try pushing the depth by showing more things coming closer into camera like the tassels, smoke, some laser particles, etc.

► The price of splashes is under NDA but I recommend searching for Karla Ortiz's art rates to give you an idea.
► A splash takes 4-5 weeks. 1st week for multiple sketches. 2nd week to figure out the colors. 3rd to 5th week to render and polish.
► I paint with the canvas size 8,000 x 4,500 px but it is shrunk down to 7,000 x 3938 for final. Final file is around 800mb.
► This video is 40x speed up. Do the math based on this video's time. Usually, the real time is around 40-80+ hours. (if the other thumbnails were added in). Actual work hours are more than 100+ hrs when you factor in the other thumbnails, research, and contemplating time.
► The toolbar at the left side is called Lazy Nezumi. It helps me get smoother lines and have perspective guides.
► To quickly color a grayscale, I use two methods.
GRAYSCALE COLORING 1ST METHOD:
• Layer on top: The grayscale set to multiply. Brighten it up and colorize depending on the mood you want. This Acts as an AO pass.
• Layer below: Use a solid brush to paint in the flat local colors.
GRAYSCALE COLORING 2ND METHOD: (Messier)
• Layer on top: Set this layer to softlight and add in your colors. This makes it a bit look dull on the highlights so you need to manually fix the highlight colors.
• Layer below: Grayscale here.
► Tip for revisions. You can use liquify on multiple layers. Right after you do it on one layer. You can press Alt+Ctrl+F to apply it again to a different layer. Make sure not to deselect your selection if you are doing this.
► I use color dodge and sometimes linear dodge blending mode to add in lighting layers.
► I group layers using this logic:
1. Post processing
2. VFX, magic
3. Character
4. Some fog
5. Background people, elements, etc
6. Sky and far background
► Here are my tools:
2008-2020:
• Wacom Intuos 3 6″x8″
• Samsung T190
• Intel Core i7 3.50GHz, 16GB RAM, Windows 7
• Photoshop CS6, DAZ 3D, Alchemy
2021:
• XP Pen Artist 24 PRO
• Dell UltraSharp
• AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core, 32 GB RAM, Windows 10
• Force Series Gen.4 PCIe MP600 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (this is important for faster everything)
• Photoshop CC, Daz 3D, Zbrush, Maya
► To open a second window of your artwork in Photoshop it is located in Window - Arrange - New Window.
► To temporarily convert your artwork into grayscale. Go to View - Proof Setup - Custom - Select Dot Gain 20%. Then Press Ctrl + Y to toggle this view.
► I am not going to upload longer or shorter versions of this because that takes too much of my personal time. I'm already giving this away for FREE.
I can’t express enough how thankful I am that you are sharing your process on UA-cam when you could’ve just kept it hidden on your computer forever.
Love how the background, though very active, never distracts from the main character; better, how you use it to frame the character, instead of just leaving it as decoration. I was also looking at the guns. I would’ve thought, given how close they are to the viewer, that the amount of texture and detail in them would overpower the composition, but nope! They have enough detail to describe the materials they’re made of and all the lines in them converge on the character, even the highlights, thus, instead of distracting, they help guide the eye to the face.
I hope you don’t mind my overly convoluted way of saying I LOVE your work and I think is awesome.
Deiv is back and with multiple pieces, this is lit
You are an absolute gift to those of us in the art community trying to learn from UA-cam
I love how you show us the process of playing around with different poses and compositions at the start
holy crap how do you handle so much LAYERS. this is so delicate its like the dream job i want so bad but i know i can never get
Well you dont technically need all of them. I just want to separate more stuff for easier revision later on. :)
Is really nice to see you back Deiv !. Thanks for that super enriching video description too!
Everything was incredible from the first second to the last
Watch your videos whenever I have free time. So satisfied.
Omg literally the goat ever since I seen you post you process master. I’m still working on my craft

i wonder where you been this days and glad your back . art splash at its best
WE CAN'T STOP HIM AND I LIKE THAT
all the more reason to play League again, thanks Sir Deiv!
Oh and I appreciate with your description up there! Have the videos and the tips too for free... You're really too kind! I'm serious btw, too kind!! I hope I can learn and draw with your technique in my style!!
Ngayon ko lang nalaman na Pinoy ka...Isa ka sa mga inspiration ko to improve more when it comes to my digital drawing

So many poses!!! Wish there were time for more explorations.
Damnnnn 5 new videosss this is amazing ❤❤❤🎉
Damn! I love this one. The pose reminds me of Gundam. I learned something new like the perspective grid for the weapon. Btw, how do you create that heat distortion effect?

@@deivcalviz thank you
Incredible work, how do you usually manage so many layers? Is there an industry standard for how you should organize them and their contents or is it up to personal preference?
As always thank you so much for the content, it is super helpful! I did have a question though if you didn't mind. When you are figuring out your lighting, do you guys use reference or is it just sort of figured out on the fly? Thank you so much for everything and awesome art by the way of course!
Figure it out on the fly at first then fix it using reference. Having a nice posable toy and a desk lamp is one of the most helpful techniques i use. If not, you can also use a 3d software.
@@deivcalviz ah you know I didn't even think of that. That is awesome. Thanks alot. Now I have a reason to buy some more action figures 😂
Ok I did have one more and I'll stop being a pest 😂 if it's ok, I'm curious how you decide on color schemes...I'm so terrible at color. If it's not too much trouble I could use some help (knowledge) it would be greatly appreciated and I'll be forever grateful 😊
@@bytesmouse im honestly not that good either.. i just copy existing stuff first. Then experiment later. Also read james gurney color and light.
Wow! Thank you a lot!
This is such a surprise for us c:

I have a question, what brushes do you use for the splash art¿
this one is cool
I am going to stop being a pest I promise haha. I was wondering though, if you were going to create a portfolio for a job in games illustration today, is it better to submit work with preexisting characters or is it preferred to have your own characters in an illustration portfolio or both? I feel so lost on what to do to get started. I hope that makes sense and thank you again for all your help and awesome content.
also curious, i'm not in the best of locations, is it hard to work remotely in games and all that?
For illustration jobs you can even do fanart and that is totally fine. Original is also fine.
If you want to be a concept artist then you NEED original characters.
These days you can work anywhere but these jobs are usually through an outsource studio just like West Studio. Studio jobs usually need you to be inhouse or in the same country.
How do you know where to render the lighting on different textures ? This is so difficult to me, I never know how to the lighting in specific compositions
Btw I love your art and you inspire me a lot❤
You need a lamp and a bunch of different materials beside you. I have clay, action figures, rocks, random stuff, etc.
Also learn to use different brushes, learn how to render the shiniest objects.. practice a lot!
@@deivcalviz Thank you so so much!! You help me ALOT with your reply and with your channel!! 🥰✨
How exactly do you know once your greenlight stage is good enough to begin rendering? I'm getting overwhelmed with what I should fix before rendering. Is there certain things you list out and fix?
Hi Blake, the best way to know if the greenlight stage is ready is when the values and colors are correct or closer to final.
The image should look super rough but if you zoom out, it should feel like it was from a movie screenshot. The goal is to complete the full coloring at this rough stage.
Some notes,
1. character should not blend too much with the bg, value separation is important.
2. Pose should be solid, no more adjusting major things.
3. Things should feel cinematic and lighting should make sense.
4. Does the image satisfy the goal. If yes, then go for it!
@@deivcalviz Thank you Deiv, I was having a tough time adjusting things for my piece and I feel I go into detail too fast so I'm glad to hear that the greenlight stage is still on the rough side. I feel a lot of pros greenlight stage work looks really polished to me so I tend to focus on detail too much.
I just notice the UA-cam thumbnail was flipped xD
lol the reason is that Riot flipped the image for the final version. What I had is not the flipped version.
@@deivcalviz ohhh so that is why
Please allow me to ask about the Grid application link?
I think that grid is just inside my free brush set in the link. Can you let me know the timestamp? I wanna understand which one.
@@deivcalviz I want to ask for the Grid app. Let me practice beautiful scenery nets, but I create photshop nets too badly :(((
@@deivcalviz What is the application in the column on the right?
*please if you can do it without speeding up the video i would like to see more please if you can do it😮💨*
