    Dinah Washington doesn’t get enough props, she really helped bridged the gap between Jazz, Pop, Blues etc. She paved the way for Aretha, Etta, Dionne etc

    I was always a big fan of Dinah Washington and enjoy how she sang those songs of especially "What A Difference A Day Makes" one of my favorites. She was phenomenal and would listen to her songs the entire day and night when I wasn't working.

      True. She struggled with her weight too. There are documentaries about Dinah Washington on youtube. She was quite the singer, the entertainer of her time and her era.

    The movie made me look at her as even more of a Queen she’s been thru enuff she’s a kid that went thru all that n played piano golf tennis did ballet she is truly a queen persevered thru some s*** we could never make it thru 2 kids before 15 and taken away from her mother......probably had to take control of the situation best she could

      normal children when they sneak downstairs = they see a kitchen or a living room with a TV show of these celebs. not "Live" !

      @@cinnamonstar808 being privileged doesn't mean she had no issues growing up. she literally gave birth as a teen. she was a black woman, you know how hard it was for black ppl back then and it still is. she had not so open minded parent or calm environment. She even had addiction issues I think.

      Oh wow ok that makes her childhood trauma so much easier to deal with. Oh wait, it doesn’t. Money doesn’t take the trauma of loosing your mum or being a teenage parent. Not to mention she was 12 and 14 with her first two pregnancies. Or did you miss that?

      I’ve only know Carole King to have wrote ONE of Aretha’s hit which was “Natural Woman” you mean Carolyn Franklin (Aretha’s little sister) cause she’s wrote quite a bit of Aretha’s hits.

    I watched the series today and it has several inaccuracies like the fact that Aretha had an older brother Vaughn Franklin that was in the household as well.

    I feel so torn with the big riff about this series and the biopic Jhud is going to do. I have watched this and Cynthia is PHENOMENAL! Regardless of the story-line, she completely embodied Aretha whole-heartedly in my humble opinion, and she did a SPECTACULAR JOB! She is an INCREDIBLE TALENT and I loved the whole series. I am just sorry about all of the conflict behind the scenes. I will await Jhud's movie as well....love her LOTS too.

    Ironically, Aretha's early jazzy albums including a tribute to Dinah were not very successful (as you might know from the movie). Aretha then moved to a more soulful gospel sound and found her very famous voice.

      Dinah was bigger than Aretha at that time as Aretha was a child. Gifted yes, but soul music wasn't created yet. Remember Sam Cooke hadn't left the church to song soul yet.

      MJB gave us a glimpse of Miss Washington's real life personality. As documentaries and peers of hers said, she was the Queen of the Blues. And that table flipping incident happened not only to Aretha Franklin but also Etta James allegedly.

    I feel like they should have used the actresses who played Dinah washington and little aretha in the jhud biopic. Little aretha in the biopic was good but the actress used here in Genius is phenomenal. Mary J as Dinah in the movie version was a dud. Sorry

      Genius is the name of the national geographic docuseries franchise. Aretha Franklin was definitely genius as a pioneer of Soul music, the civil rights movement and women's rights.

      Dinah Washington had a distinctive diction and tone! No doubt about it. Ma Raney, Bessie Smith and Dinah Washington popularized the Blues in the 19th century 🖤
