I am really lucky. Out of the 4 70mm IMAX cinemas in Europe there is one in Czechia in all countries! Not in Germany, not in France but in Czechia. It's the one time I am happy to live there.

The best thing I have near me is a cinema which can play the 70mm film on a 1.43:1 screen, sadly not that huge tho. And the next best is that digital imax in 1.78:1

Saw it last night in Indianapolis one of the 30 theaters in America. It was the full IMAX 70mm projection. It truly was one of the greatest pieces of film I've watched and experienced. The shots were absolutely immersive and breathtaking. Outside of Nolan's genius, it was just a stunning experience. Truly the most true format for cinema.
I’m seeing it in IMAX digital on July 20. Then on July 22, me and my friend are driving all the way to Buford Georgia to see it in IMAX 70mm. It’ll be the first time I see a movie in IMAX 70mm, and I am pumped.

I am going there opening night and I suggest you do the same if you can. During the opening day screenings of Interstellar and Dunkirk the film projector broke down.

I am lucky enough to live only 2 hours away from Hollywood. It is going to be great seeing this movie on 70mm IMAX at 1245 am. For so many reasons this film seems to have great timing. Coldwar basically defined my childhood, older now and living in a country with the largest military spending is crazy (40% is Defense 877 Billion$). We could be gone tomorrow, or not. This will be impressive to see, thank you Nolan.
I’m going to see it in IMAX 70mm but if that wasn’t available near me I’d go for 70mm (non IMAX) film. I’d rather have the higher resolution offered by that format than the taller but lower resolution image of the digital IMAX versions. Nolan has been careful to frame the film so that it also works well in the wider aspect ratio of standard 70mm film
I got two tickets to it in IMAX 70mm for Saturday July 22nd. Pretty excited! I will try to remember to update this comment post watch and let you all know how the experience was!
July 21st Review: So I just got out of the theatre from Oppenheimer and wow. The photography and the actors we’re phenomenal. And the visuals without any CGI looked breathtaking. All that in 70mm IMAX format was insane. 10/10 for me.

I live in downtown Providence, RI and I'm just a short walk from one of those 30 theaters worldwide that is screening in IMAX 70 MM film. I actually bought my ticket for opening day on 7/20 without realizing just how special such a showing really is, and how lucky I am! Needless to say, after learning this, I am doubly excited!
Going to see Oppenheimer at the Metreon in San Francisco. I can't wait. Saw Dunkirk there, and it was pretty amazing.
I didn’t know Arizona only has one and I’ve gone to it multiple times but never knew it did 70mm film!! Gonna have such a bigger appreciation while watching this movie.
I live in Atlanta and I was able to get tickets for opening weekend in 70mm IMAX down at Regal Mall of Georgia and it is only 15 minutes away from where I live. Super excited and cannot wait for a cinematic masterpiece!

Lucky enough to live in a city with a 70mm IMAX theater here in Tempe, AZ! I usually skip that particular theater because I normally stick to AMC to make the most of my A-list subscription, but this movie more than warrants paying for the ticket.

Booked in to see this in IMAX 70mm at the Vue Cinemas Manchester Printworks cinema in UK for opening day. I think its only one of two cinemas in the UK that can actually exhibit the format, the other being the BFI IMAX.

Actually there's four! Only three showed Oppenheimer, with the other being the Science Museum. Glasgow's science center also has an IMAX 70mm projector but they don't show films that much. How was it though? I went to see it at the BFI IMAX on Friday, and it was an amazing experience. My first time seeing a film projection.

@@cordlesscorde4860 yes I highly recommend it. You haven’t truly seen a Christopher Nolan movie until you’ve seen it in 70mm. The screen is much bigger, the sound is impeccable and the image is the highest quality I’ve ever seen. It’s so unbelievably sharp. It’s also a cool feeling to know you’re seeing the image actually projected on film and that the film itself is up in the projection room. It’s not just a digital file. It’s special. If Nolan is your favorite director you really gotta go
I've worked in camera, in the lab and in vfx post production and I've always loved the colours and tones that Eastmancolor can produce.
I have no argument with the notion that the resolution of IMAX is the highest cinema format in the world and that given the right subject which visually exploits all that detail, it would be the ideal format.
Bear in mind though that shooting in IMAX is extremely expensive compared with the already high cost of 35mm or digital. The massive cameras and associated cranes, dollies and other equipment make it an especially cumbersome format for production. The colour positive prints are extremely expensive, require a lot of pre-projection handling and Oppenheimer's long running time required that projector platters be enlarged. The sound track mentioned in the video comes from a digital disk, not the film (this rather recalls the old Warner Brothers Vitaphone sound process - God help them if they ever get out of sync) so it would be the same for either a film or digital screening. Is the best reason to see a film in IMAX is the sound track? I sure hope not!
I saw Oppenheimer in (digital projected) IMAX and while I thought it was a good story, well told I just didn't see the need for it to have been shot it in IMAX.
It could have been just as visually impacting shot on 35mm or with hi-rez digital cameras. For me, IMAX was pure indulgence on this film.
I suppose you could argue that without Nolan's films, 65mm would simply die out and that might well be true but IMHO this exceptional format should be saved for something more visually overwhelming. Epics like "Napoleon" or "Barry Lyndon" or "Flags of our Fathers"/"Letters from Iwo Jima" or "2001: A Space Odyssey" come to mind, not something like Oppenheimer which for the most part is about people talking, usually in B+W with a few explosion vfx cuts.
I'll be traveling to Pooler, GA where they built the new tallest IMAX in the world (76ft high by 101 ft wide) with recliners. Unfortunately it won't be 70mm but will be dual 4k laser. Still excited to see it there.

I live in Indonesia, and currently there are no IMAX 70mm cinema available to watch this masterpiece, but luckily there are still digital IMAX cinema just a drive away from my home, glad can still watch this movie in IMAX format although it’s not the fullest aspect ratio
there is 1 actually at keong mas TMII that serves 1570 perf 70mm screening, but i think we don’t get the 70mm film reel ship here to Jakarta unfortunately
After being released over 6 weeks ago, I was able to book a ticket two weeks in advance for the AMC Lincoln Square 13 & IMAX, apparently the largest IMAX screen in North America. I have already seen the film in 70MM so I’m excited for the big screen!

I’m going to the BFI imax London to watch in 70mm imax film, is a 5 hour journey to get there as it’s the only venue in the UK that is showing the format but will be worth it
We go the huge screen here in Germany but did not get the IMAX 70mm... So I will have to see it in regular 70mm print but at least I get to see it in the largest capacity cinema in Germany, seating about 1200 people. Lichtburg in Essen is not only big but damn beautiful with 1920s styling (was restored to its former glory after being damaged in WW2), a big balcony (where I will be front and center, best seats in the house) and overall just vibes of the golden age of film!
Regular 70mm should still be amazing and in my opinion much more preferable than the digital IMAX versions which will be 4k or 2k depending on the theatre
Thanks for making this video. After seeing this video I am planning to watch Oppenheimer in Cinepolis IMAX theatre in Pune. There only 1 IMAX theatre here in Pune India.
The format I viewed the film in was regular 70mm. I do have an AMC and a Showcase Cinema that had a liemax version, however these cinemas were converted into liemax. The closest IMAX version was at a furniture store in MA, however it can become a WWF match for seating as it is first come first serve. Had a sore neck watching Interstellar due to having no choice but sitting very close to the screen at this location. Film had started yet individuals were still trying to find seats. The honest to god best format was in Providence, RI but each way was a 45 minute drive and that would be if traffic was perfect on the highway. And that it never is.
I live right outside San Antonio, I’ll be seeing it on the 70mm film there! SO EXCITED!!! 🙌🏽 Can’t wait to hear the score in that theater as well!

I am very close to a theater playing it on 70mm film, but literally EVERY showtime for 2+ weeks is completely sold out. The Regal app and Fandango don’t show it playing beyond that.
Plenty of options to see it on RPX, I’m wondering how close that will be.
I’d love to see it on IMAX, but if that isn’t an option, how much a step down is RPX?

Cinemark in Dallas is showing Oppenheimer in 70mm imax but every time slot is sold out for 3 weeks in advance. I might end up watching in normal 70mm or imax dual laser at amc which are available

I’ll be watching it in a 1.43:1, 60ftX80ft IMAX (D2 Laser) theatre in Reading, MA. Not quite the 70mm 15p film experience but still excited for the original aspect ratio on a large screen.

i'll be watching it in IMAX in K11 Musea in Hong Kong. based on your list there are no theaters in Hong kong that can play actual IMAX 1570 film? Is that correct? So what I'll be seeing is just a digital version right? They have IMAX in laser though so not sure how much of a difference that makes.

Sadly in India there are no operational 15 perf 70 millimetre imax theatres....so if I watch it on standard IMAX theatre or IMAX laser theatres the print of the movie will be 'film' or 'digital' ???

I called my local Cinemark 18 IMAX XD Theater and they did not have a clue what I was talking about when I asked them what they aspect ratio of this movie we would be viewing? OMG Seriously? The person on the phone said they asked 2 manager and they did not know and her other response was they just make the money selling concessions?

I am from south east michigan & the Michigan Science Center in Detroit is going to play it in IMAX 70mm projection but it is a Dome IMAX theatre with fish eye lens on the projector. Is it better to watch it in flat/ rectangular IMAX theatre or Dome IMAX theatre is good enough ? if Dome theatre is okay then what would be the best seats ? I've heard ppl complaining about neck craning & feeling disoriented in Dome theatres. Could you please advise.
I would try the dome imax. sit 2/3 of the way back. part of the reason nolan wants folks to watch in 70mm imax film is for the immersion so feeling "overwhelmed" is to be expected somewhat.

Hi from the Netherlands. Going to watch it at Pathé cinemas in Rotterdam in IMAX Digital. Unfortunately no 70mm anymore, but we do have IMAX with Laser 4K and the 12 track soundsystem and the acoustics are really good. Audio is loud, but never to bright or too loud that it hurts your ears, but yeah, it is LOUD! 😁

First they had the version with the 2x 2K projectors and the old 6 channel soundsystem that sometimes got too loud and too bright. Acoustics also was not so good. 5 years ago they rebuild from the ground up with 4K Laser, new screen, new 12 track soundsystem and great Acoustics. I was fortunate enough to see movies like The Dark Knight and Transformers 2 in IMAX with 70mm film. In Amsterdam they had the IMAX film projector. Unfortunately, it just wasn't sustainable anymore and now all IMAX cinemas in the Netherlands are IMAX Digital, but at least they are all with 4K Laser and the 12 track soundsystem. 🙂

@@elllllllll Pathé Eindhoven has IMAX. It's just as good as in Rotterdam. I still need to go to KINO Rotterdam. They have an OG Philips 70mm Projector and Oppenheimer is in 70mm there. Biggest difference with IMAX 70mm is the aspect ratio. Let me know where you went!? 🙂

Which is better-(1) Watching the 70mm film version of Oppenheimer from a “bad seat” (which are fairly plentiful in a typical theater of this type, be it too close or off to the side), or (2) Watching the film in an IMAX digital theater from a good seat in the house, which I suspect is easier to reserve.
Are there 70 mm non-film formats? The reason I ask is because here in the Phoenix area 2 AMC locations and 1 Harkins location show 70mm showings but only the Harkins location is listed on the IMAX website as on of the 30 locations? Any thoughts?
There’s quite a lot of different formats! 70mm IMAX is the top one (30 locations) but there is also standard 70mm analogue film which isn’t as tall as IMAX but has a higher resolution that the digital formats. Then there are the digital IMAX versions that have the tall image but are only 4K or 2K resolution depending on the location.
@@timtyler8822 I was able to get tickets to one of the 30 screenings here in Phoenix. According to the Theater rep I spoke with, it is film which 2 other locations here have as well, but the other locations don’t have the same sized theaters as the 30 locations. Kind of getting the best of all worlds with the certified locations on there website I guess. In any case if you get to see a film print it’ll be a special thing I think.
I have a question, I bought my tickets for Oppenheimer in IMAX with Lazer which means it's gonna be 1.9:1 on the screen. And everywhere I go I see that it's produced to watch in 70mm which is 1,43:1. So my question is, what's resolution will be better and if there is any difference between this formats?
The resolution for the 70mm will be immensely higher and will show more image because of the taller aspect ratio. Unfortunately there’s only 30 locations world wide showing in 70mm

Can someone please explain the difference between iMax 70mm and regular 70mm?

The regular 70mm film cell and the IMAX film cell are the same width. However, the IMAX cell is almost twice the height.

Dolby Cinema's area great too and I consider myself an evangelist for them. But because of the immense support from IMAX corp. on this movie and the aspect ratio I believe it to be better to watch this particular film in IMAX.

How this film is edited if it has reel not digital?

I have a question! I already sealed my ticket in my local Imax laser.
Chris Nolan has mentioned that he’s using 70 mm film to shoot the Imax part. I wonder what kind of conversion process of that film that the film crew shoots vs what we get in the digital Imax screening?
is the quality will be the same? what kind of difference do we get if we get any?
If you see the movie in laser than you'll get the full 1.43:1 aspect ratio. so there will be no cropping. If you see the movie in digital imax or any other format (Dolby Cinema, Regal RPX, etc.) then you'll be seeing a cropped version of the film because those cinemas are not designed to show the taller aspect ratio. If you see the movie in ANYTHING other than 70mm IMAX film you'll be losing the 18k resolution that IMAX film provides. However, this is standard in the industry. Most movies are shot on 4k-8k cameras and then by the time you see it in theaters or watch at home they're usually reduced to 2k because it's really expensive and time intensive to render visual effects higher than 2k.

I stay in Hyderabad, India. We don't have a IMAX here but there's one (called Prasad's) that has one of the largest screens in India
PCX will present Oppie in 2.20:1. Btw, it's not one of the largest, it's THE LARGEST Screen in India.

@@darshanjangid Luckily I live in Delhi. So will be going to Logix, Noida. For someone who lives in Mumbai, I highly recommend IMAX Laser, Lower Parel. If you're in Hyderabad, Prasads PCX, is best. For all other cities, choose any IMAX (smaller ones) near you. Small IMAX Screens will still be larger than regular 2D format. If you don't have an IMAX nearby & you can't travel, choose the largest screen size with 4K & Atmos.
Wherever you can connect a hearing aid because much of the dialog is unintelligible. Have fun figuring out what the characters are saying to each other.
