  • About the Speech:
In December 2013, Sir Keir was appointed to a taskforce established by the UK Labour Party to develop proposals for a new victims' rights law. The proposals are intended to make it easier for victims of violent crime to come forward and to facilitate their participation in criminal proceedings. In his keynote address, Sir Keir considered the potential implications of what he has called "a golden opportunity to recast the criminal justice system as a criminal justice service fit for victims."
    About the Speaker:
Sir Keir was Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013. Prior to this, he served as the human rights advisor to the Policing Board in Northern Ireland from 2003 to 2008. He was named as QC of the Year in the field of human rights and public law in 2007 by the Chambers & Partners directory and in 2005 he won the Bar Council's Sydney Elland Goldsmith award for his outstanding contribution to pro bono work in challenging the death penalty in the Caribbean, Uganda, Kenya and Malawi. Sir Keir now specialises in international law cases at Doughty Street Chambers.
