At my girlfriends sister's wedding they passed around a few instax cameras so there ended up being hundreds of instax pics taken by guests documenting the wedding, definitely a hit
my friend, the bride, did the same thing at her wedding but no one was using them! i happened to have my own instax so I was taking photos the whole time and handing them out. so the bride asked me to to just start using all the cameras and film on the tables... me: "really?! (giggity), her: "please, no one is using them", me: slams a glass champagne, and then just becomes the second wedding photographer. it was soooo fun! I was so close to starting a side hustle where i just take instant photos for the cost of instant film, a plate, and a glass of champagne.
Handing out disposable cameras never works well.... You're just gonna end up with a whole bunch of unusable photos. It sounds good on paper but it's almost never a good proposition after the facts and if you don't have any other photographer your wife will probably ask you for a divorce after the facts.
@@orestes1984I liked what I did on my birthday, I gave my camera on noob mode to my dad and I used the Instax to take some pictures of the guests. It was a balance between having nice photos and not being the photographer on my birthday
@@jlGenozzV Yeah, I feel like you would have to give a bunch of people a table full of Nikon F6s in A mode to achieve that level of decent photos though... Although, that's something people like Caleb and Jason can afford to do though.
As a wedding photographer (who is old enough to have shot more film than digital both work and leisure) what Caleb is asking is every wedding photographers nightmare. Just pick someone you like and let them do their thing. After all they are professionals and know what to do. You can't ask a pro to use a type of film or camera.
I don't know about this take. At the end of the day, the client is paying and they should definitely advocate for what they want. As a wedding photog, you should be able to determine whether these work for you. If not, then move on to the next. I will never knowingly take a job where I compromise my style and/or would I risk disappointing clients. But of course, being a photog, it would be hard to satisfy all the nitty gritty and that's why it would make sense to even charge more.
I set out a bunch of cheap point and shoots with portra 800 and cinestill 800T and a super 8 camera for guests to use and it went pretty well for capturing the wedding on film, but we also hired a photographer who shot digital.
Lol I love the 90’s teen sitcom theme song. You need to use funky 90’s title fonts for your credits. Also Jason missed the Han Solo “I know” opportunity
The Nikon FA was my first fully manual film camera and it is probably my favorite camera still. It is a fantastic camera, great meter, satisfying shutter, and all of the versatility that comes with a Nikon F mount camera. I hope that I can use it for the rest of my life.
it was so hard being a photographer and having some one else shoot your wedding, but we searched long and hard and finally found some one that had a similar vision and documenty style . It really hurt paying for it but it was the most important thing about the wedding at the end of the day its all you have...besides your SO.... and cameras...and film...
After starting UA-cam recently and dreaming of doing it full time some day; it was nice to hear an honest few minutes of riffing about how much of a time suck it is. And that even if you do it as your main gig that doesn't necessarily make it easier. Every video I do takes forever to complete and some people make it seem so easy. Cheers!
Every few years I try to get out more, and return to shooting 35mm film. I find that just watching a Jason or Caleb video will cause me to grab a camera and tinker with it, while watching the video. Thanks guys, another great podcast---I hope they continue to be a regular feature.
The best fucking comic duo in analog photography! I Think you SHOULD contact K. Jenner and therefore single-handedly save analog photography world! Hit her up!
What's really cool about the FA is that not only is it the first Nikon with matrix metering, its the only Nikon that can do matrix metering with their AI lenses. The f5, f100, f6 and any other bodies with matrix metering can only do it with the D and G line of lenses.
My uncle & aunt did that at their wedding 20 years ago, it was fun to take the pictures as a guest and a great way for the couple to get a lot of photos of everyone.
Perfect start into the weekend. Congratulations on the engagement Caleb. Jason will have the pleasure of organizing a beachlor party for a photographer and keep any pictures made from leaking out to the bride to be.. 🤣😂
you gotta get disposable cameras for each table at the wedding, so everyone can shoot photos throughout the wedding and reception, might make a wicked photo book. i want to do that if i ever get married.
The equivalent FM3A for Pentax is the LX. It's a very nice camera to hold (on par with Leica). Pentax also has legendary lenses like the limited line (very underrated). I have the 43mm limited lens and it's probably my favorite lens of the couple that I have.
I used to have an FA! It was my first film Nikon and the first one I really shot a lot. Fantastic camera, and the matrix metering works TTL with any lens from the 1950s F mounts up to the D series (and any other F mount lens as a matter of fact). Also, Jason, sounds like easy fixes on the 4Runner, keeeeeep it! Try checking either the valve stem or wheel bead with Windex. If it bubbles, there’s your leak.
I had this sweet idea for wedding photography: give each table a Polaroid camera and a unique assignment. By the end of the night, you'll have a ton of awesome photos and all the good vibes captured forever.
Dudes, Ricoh GR1v is a dream camera! 28mm f2.8 lens with 0.35cm cf, +/- 2EV compensation, ISO adjustability, quick flash on/off and most importantly the size! Ricoh/Pentax give us a new one please! Electronics are failing on the old ones :-/
Love your guys pod! Congrats on the new engagement. Side note, I’m a wedding photographer who exclusively shoots on film, if you happen to be still looking for one.
Boys, you heard any news about HP5 being out of stock or really expensive everywhere? Its suddenly kind of hard to find in 35mm and I havent heard anything about it....
instead of getting another hasselblad spend like 100$ and get kiev88 which is soviet replica of hasselblad, although i guess they would be harder to find in US
Great show! Love the style of just chatting. Two pals, chatting it up. Nice. Also, Pentax says in the video that they want to make a point and shoot, a cheaper SLR and a pro SLR.
@mamyyamigos Good stuff. Just a bit confused, but I might have misheard. You said you are looking forward to the double exposure mode on the FA. But the F3 also has it.
Another great episode. Congratulations Caleb. I got engaged back in October and also decided to wear an engagement ring as a man. I have 2 bestmen and our wedding is pretty close to Camarillo. Hope all goes well with the planning. Jason, you're cool I guess. -Happy shooting, Korbin.
If you are not yet in NYC, then take a drive to Hamilton Park in Weehawken, NJ around 4:00 PM (bring a tripod) and get spectacular shots of the NYC skyline as the sun is lighting up the sky scrapers. Then grab great food in Hoboken, NJ.
I recently bought a Canon G10 not really because of the ccd sensor, just because I wanted something small to walk around, but there's definitely some vintage vibes going on. Not sure about the "film look" everybody is talking about lately, because I don't shoot film, but there's something nostalgic about the saturated colors, not that great dynamic range and bloomy highlights caused by the fungus in my lens.
Re: Pentax... Spotmatics! They're beautiful, amazing, deliciously heavy, M42 mount, Takumars are lenses so good they're the most expensive M42 lenses I'm coming across. And the old Pentax logo, with the "Asahi Pentax" name in thin font.. The K1000 are the same mechanics but in K-mount.
Shit, I was at the Ed Hopper exhibit last week. Bought a couple books too, really fascinating stuff. Your old video on him introduced me to him, thanks!
you may hate on the pentax espios all you want, but some of them actually do exposure compensation at a much, much... much lower price than the T2 🤷♀️ with bulb mode and multiple exposure (if that's your thing)!
and about wedding film photographers: in my country there's this crazy group who does the same day edit equivalent for film. they shoot the wedding, develop, and scan everything on the same day. i'm guessing they show it to the guests during the reception
So when are you guys telling us all the aerochrome shots are just flamin dew in the liquid lomo camera? Really fun episode fellas. Going to listen to both again, and uhhh...zoom my lens while driving to Vegas in a bit.
You're going to New York and not going to B&H? Not even just to ride in the baskets? Back when I was doing wedding photography, I heard of a job where they put disposable cameras at all the tables at the reception and had the guests photograph each other. Hey, the pro and team cannot be everywhere all the time. Jason - that slight on the looks of the Pentax 645 is a bit out of place, coming from a Hassy owner! I always considered the P645 a very sleek and well-integrated camera. The viewfinder was integral to the body rather than a blob on the top, and the battery grip was no more than needed and very ergonomic. Now when the time came, I did get a Bronica instead, but I still admire the approach Pentax took. Nothing against Hasselblad's quality or functionality, but I just don't see "inspiration" in its design elements. That post covered a lot of ground, and with no stills to look at and discuss!
If you don't have experience with Pentax cameras, have a look at the LX. I am mainly a (Mamiya) medium format shooter, but that LX is really a great camera. It looks really like a classic SLR. There isn't a titanium version of it, but it has titanium shutter curtain 😉
Photographer ended up being the biggest expense (after venue) for our wedding. You can definitely find someone that satisfies both you & your partner, if you have a deep enough pocket
i feel like to make film affordable again... we need filmmakers to shoot film.. think about it. 24 frames per second - googles says that is 90 feet of film for minute! i think? sell your leicas for a PANAFLEX MILLENNIUM, or whatever. GO! sell your car, your home, do it for the community.
Isn’t Ricoh the same as Pentax. They should re-release the GR1 with better tech - like the Leica with the m6. It’s still expensive and has a huge market - easy return on investment. That is the point and shoot they should make in my opinion.

Lol. If someone wants something they should ask for it. In no way do you speak for every wedding photographer. You might need to learn to say ’no’.
I agree. Because nobody can shoot and think like you do, at least get someone who can do it well while you enjoy your unique day.
I don't know about this take. At the end of the day, the client is paying and they should definitely advocate for what they want.
