Geoff's wife Kathy asked him to do this for her. So he did. He followed it up by one he wanted to do himself which is another one on the piano called High and Dry. I learned Shenandoah in my 3rd grade class. Ms. Kissinger taught it to us 64 years ago. It came out of the mid 1850s by fur traders that traveled the rivers of the Appalachian mountains over to the Mississippi where the Missouri joined it. Often they interacted with the Native American peoples (in this case I've heard it was the Iroquois chief's daughter the fur trader fell in love with. Her father didn't let her go with him. Probably most fathers wouldn't have.) to trade other goods for the furs and take them back to "civilization". It is a beautiful song and Geoff certainly did it justice. Simply lovely.
Shendoah is my second favorite song that Geoff has done. It is so sweet, so soothing, so calming, it's just wonderful. And then there is that one "in your face" dissonant chord that is spectacular. I'll recommend that you react to his version of Take Me Home Country Roads, I know you just did Peter Hollens and Adam Chance' cover a short time ago. I haven't heard theirs, but Geoff's will be nothing like it. My favorite in Geoff's playbook is the one he did last Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I think it's the best thing he's done (so far). Really enjoy your reactions Samantha, keep it up!
It's an old American folk song and the song itself has been attributed it to Native Americans, River boatmen, geographical areas . It's just a beautiful song and the most beautiful one Geoff has ever done in my opinion.
Arguably his most beautiful video to date. gorgeous. Shenandoah is said to be the name of a Naative Amerian Chief. The song is said to be about a trapper (?) who fell in love with this chieftain's daughter. It's a very old folk song so there is no original as such.
You mentioned finding the original...do not think that is possible because the song is quite old. It has evolved to its present form over the years. I have heard different versions but this is my favorite. Thank you for your lovely reaction.
So to summarize: Shenandoah was the name of a Native American man (possibly chief), and is also the name of a river plus the whole river valley in New York, a community and a national park. The song is old, but probably about the daughter of the man. No surprise, it's a beautiful area. It's a pretty well known folk song in the US. Geoff did this one because his wife, Kathy, loves it and asked him to. To me, it's one of his most beautiful. The English translations of the many native american languages are frequently butchered. (There is a town in Michigan that they tried to name "partridge country." They got it wrong, and the town is actually named "half a partridge" (Alpena, Michigan). This kind of thing is far more common than folks like to admit.) And of course, since there were many Native American languages, and we spent well over a hundred years trying to eliminate their cultures and languages... it's tricky.
The Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, nestled within the Appalachian Mountain Range, is one of the most beautiful areas in America!

My favorite of Geoff's. Just beautiful.

It's an old American folk song and the song itself has been attributed it to Native Americans, River boatmen, geographical areas . It's just a beautiful song and the most beautiful one Geoff has ever done in my opinion.
it's an old folk song and Geoff's cover is one of the best (not unexpected).

Shenandoah was a movie starring James (Jimmy) Stewart set in the Civil War between the North and South in the US.

Shenandoah is a very old American folk song dating back to the mid 1800s. Of course, there is no true original to hear...
